UPDATE 3! Denied: Benedict Cumberbatch Cast in Star Wars: Episode7?

This rumor comes from FilmChronicles without any signs of proof. I find it strange that one of the main Star Trek villains is cast in Star Wars. Still if true Benedict Cumberbatch is a great choice…

From FilmChronicles:

There’s a lot of gossip swirling around that Lucasfilm are about to make a big casting announcement regarding Star Wars VII, and that casting announcement appears to be none-other than Benedict Cumberbatch, most recently seen in director JJ Abrams’ previous movie, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’.

How Cumberbatch fits into the new movie is entirely open to conjecture (seeing as we know zero plot details so far!) Casting calls suggest we may see three or four early twentysomething Solo / Skywalker offspring in the film, which seems to count Cumberbatch out at a wise thirty-seven years old. Would Abrams use him as a villain for the second time in a row, or might he make an infinitely more appealing and energetic new Jedi hero, perhaps keeping the peace with Luke Skywalker?

Cumberbatch is famous for his roles in BBC’s show ‘Sherlock’, Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, Star Trek Into Darkness and more.
I always thought that Abrams won’t use any cast members from Star Trek because of the so called “fan wars” but I might be wrong. 🙂

UPDATE!

According to Marc Graser from Variety the above rumor is not true:

star wars benedict cumberbatch

I’m not saying Cumberbatch will be in the movie – no deal is done, period – I just think these people straight up lie to press.

I personally would like to see Benedict Cumberbatch play C-3P0. Just putting that out there. You can send it right back.

UPDATE 2!

BadAssDigest has more on the story:

Last week I mentioned that all of the movie bloggers were sitting on one bit of Star Wars casting rumor. That rumor has finally been published, and now I can weigh in with my own thoughts: Screencrush is reporting that Benedict Cumberbatch may appear in Star Wars Episode VII.

I’ve heard this too, and I’ve heard the role he’s up for is that of a bad guy, almost certainly a Sith. And it’s a major role, one that will continue throughout the whole new trilogy. This part is why he dropped out of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak.

But it’s not a done deal, and it may not yet come together. There are some other commitments Cumberbatch will have to break to secure the part. In the meantime, I know that there have been official denials coming down from multiple channels – these denials are why the story didn’t break in a trade – but with a JJ Abrams production I never believe the denials. That’s not to say I think Cumberbatch is guaranteed the part, I just ignore the denials and wait for the official announcement. I mean, remember when Abrams said Khan wasn’t the bad guy in Star Trek Into Darkness?

UPDATE 3! Denial.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s rep:

“There is no truth to the rumour Benedict has been cast in Star Wars. I think the rumours are circling because JJ and Benedict have just recently had a wonderful time working together on Star Trek .”

Reps going into spin mode always has me suspicious. But Cumberbatch does have a scheduling conflict he has to sort out if he were to do SW.

While I don’t really want well known faces… I can’t deny how awesome BC is. I’d prefer him as a witty snarky hero… but he’d be a damn fine villain too.

As the villain, no. As a main character, no. As a funny less important sarcastic sly general or something, YES!

I was just thinking… Wouldn’t it be great if the ‘new’ Jedi hero was actually Kyle Katarn? He would make a fine addition to the old characters. And imagine Robert Downey Jr playing that role? That would add some fine dose of humour to the movie.

      Yes they did.
I doubt that J.J. Abrams will cause that to all Star Trek fans.

As much as I like Cumberbatch, I’d prefer the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises be kept separated in terms of actors.

I don’t know if I could see him as a sith or not. I just hope they make the bad guy really interesting, like make his face look a bit like palpatines did, or maybe have a voldermort type thing going on. But of course make something new. Benedict doesn’t have any star wars aura about him. Plus the villain needs an edge and sense of mystery.

I see him playing a new character called “Star Wars Man”!
    He can shoot laser beams.
And he can also fly around in the sky.
    He can do that, too!

“There is no truth to the rumour Benedict has been cast in Star Wars.” To be fair, reps lie all the time. Especially on JJ Abrams productions. And this only says he hasn’t been ‘cast’. Well I’m pretty sure nobody would have been signed on and cast this early in production, but may easily be in the very final stages of negotiation. I don’t know, just a thought.

There will be no solo twin children in the new movie. Im willing to bet they wont even be married. They will never put anything in the film that would conflict with the EU. Putting the solo twins or children would be considered copying EU stuff which means no solo children. COUNT on it. The children will be lukes whom he has not seen in years,
and as far as cumberbatch, well I would love to see him in the new movie.

Stories done “post-Ex. Univ.” can be done considering Mark, Carrie, and Harrison’s ages. (Empress) Jaina Solo (Fel) would be close to 30 (upwards or downwards). Jacen, Anakin, and Chewie would be dead (Chewie re-cast for 2016’s Young Han Solo origin movie). Zekk, turned “Darth Who-Knows?” would be the villain, jealous of Jagged Fel (Jaina’s eventual non-Force-user husband) in a triangle like the Han-Leia-Luke triangle of ANH. Whatever Zekk’s “Darth name,” he will be a worthy Sith villain. This will be Ep. 7, as Ben Skywalker comes of age, and Luke, training his son, uses cousin Jaina to illustrate “what a Jedi is not to do.” ** Like Prequel Anakin, Allanah Solo (Jacen’s daughter) will be the character that grows up in these films.

Del Rey is running with 3 Jaina Solo novels for 2014 and Dark Horse has Ania Solo Legacy comics. Disney would lose money if this was only an “alternate universe and didn’t count.” I’m not sure people would buy the boos then.

** Empress Fel’s “Imperial Knights” (helmetless Royal Guards wielding lightsabers from the Legacy comics) is too cool of concept not to use (like the McQuarrie stormtroopers originally designed with vibro-blades or something). As the Legacy Comics continue, a “Fel” is the captain of the guards and they are all Force-wielders. Neither Baron Fel nor Jagged Fel had Force ability. It has to be from the Jaina (Skywalker-Solo) bloodline).

She wouldn’t keep the last name “Solo” either (when married), so for there to be any Solo descendant, Ania Solo would have to be the great-granddaughter of Allanah Solo, Jacen’s orphan (but her mother might be the other young lady of Jaina’s age that they are casting for – Tenel Ka (off-world Queen of the Dathomir witches – think good Nightsisters).

There’s a lot of good stuff there.

Ben Skywalker will probably take the lead in Episode 8 as he gains his independence from his dad, Luke.

Allanah will grow up for “Disney Episode 10-12,” but not do too much.

In Episode 9, I’d guess Jaina will return to help her cousin Ben, and the Fels and Skywalkers will be loosely allied, as I’m sure Han and Leia, and Luke, no longer like Jaina that much considering the path she chose. But she’s a hero nevertheless.

And in my last 2 cents, Jennifer Lawrence as Jaina might be just fine, but not the deal-maker or deal-breaker. But Jaina must be a rogue like her father Han Solo, since she’ll go her own way, without the approval of the families.

Unfortunately, Mara Skywalker (Ben’s mom) will likely be dead, and we won’t see her on screen unless in a ‘tween episode movie when Mara is younger and the Emperor’s Hand.
