UPDATE! New Star Wars: Rebels Plot Details and Characters Revealed. Meet the Stubborn Droid Chopper!

rebels

Several new Star Wars: Rebels plot details and character names have been revealed. Also meet the new droid character called Chopper and check out what Dave Filoni said about the upcoming series…

One of JediNews‘ sources shared this interesting info about Rebels:

On board the Ghost we will encounter:
– Kannan Jarrus
– Hera Syndulla – a Twilek whose family we have met before, and may well meet again.
– Zeb – the gunner, and trusty sidekick.

On board the Phantom we will encounter:

– Ezra Bridger – a renegade Imperial Cadet, who learns of their Force sensitivities through a highly sought Holocron – the very item The Inquisitor is commanded to retrieve by his Emperor. Bridger dresses in some customised Imperial gear.

It looks like Hera Syndulla’s family will be the bridge between Clone Wars and Rebels. Anyone remember her family’s part in Clone Wars?

UPDATE!

A video introduction of the new Rebels character Chopper:

And here’s a new interview with Clone Wars director and Rebels producer Dave Filoni where he discusses the much anticipated TV series.
(The Google translation is from German.)

What will be the biggest difference between the new series and Clone Wars?

I think that the animation style has most changed. The look of Rebels is more similar to the original Star Wars trilogy, while Clone Wars refers more to the new trilogy. We will see many things that are popular in the Star Wars universe, but long gone were seen. The Star Destroyers, TIE Fighters, and the stormtroopers – basically back the empire and that is the big change that we’ve seen for a long time only the Republic in action. The whole tonality is thus different. Clone Wars was just towards the end, with the fall of the Jedi Order, more and more gloomy as we get with the old joke Rebels and the geschwindikeit the original parts.

Will there be any connections to the new Star Wars movies?

One can not say difficult. It is all still in the process. The stories are temporally considered just too far away from each other to make a direct connection. Connected, they are of course the fact that they are all part of the universe and of history strand.

rebels

What is so special about the new character will be introduced today – Chopper?

We always say that if Artoo resembles a dog, a cat chopper accordingly. This means that chopper does things on which he has just lust. He’s a little stubborn and irritable. I think Chopper will provide a nice change from R2D2. It is really like Chopper – at least cat people will love him.

Why you should watch the series?

I think you will like the characters and their adventures. It is simply a classic Star Wars narrative structure. Our heroes are nevertheless pursued by the mighty galactic empire and I think you will really immerse yourself in the story and want to follow what is happening week after week.

it is so good we get Rebels this year, can you imagine waiting for ep.VII without a new star wars show? the specualations would reach ridicilous levels, now Rebels can take away some of the focus & keep us occupied & the next 2 years will hopefully not seem so long, I am so excited to get to know a bunch of new characters (& in McQuarrie style!!!) I am sure they will pull off a show that will sit well with all star wars fans 🙂

Couldn’t agree with you more on this statement. I’m so anxious to see some new faces and fill some plot gaps that would have festered in my brain until E-VII’s release without Rebels!

I like the fact that they will be all new characters but I don’t feel like this is a big enough connection for me to TCW. Just because we’ve seen a picture of Hera and know her father isn’t enough for me.

Now if we see her father Cham, who didn’t want Ryloth being held hostage or under either republic or separatist control, then I can see more of a connection and how he or his daughter becomes a big part or a member of the formation of the galactic alliance and rebellion. But if they don’t connect it or show the Syndulla families patriotism at all, then I could really care less who she is.

Yea I agree. it doesn’t sound like he’s a droid, especially an astromech. he’s missing numbers and letters

Sounds to me like they’re giving him a little to much personality for a astromech too. It’s not like he’s a protocol droid…
Isn’t that just like Disney to take an inanimate object and give it life?

His look definiltey breathes OT, though. Looks like they’re going in a good direction as far as that goes, excluding the Inquisitor.

I agree with the premise of your statement, but based on their description of him he is not an R2, an R4, etc. He is pieced together. So I’m not sure it’d be appropriate to call him by a model designation.

I think this can work. I’m a little worried about the show overall, but I’m hopeful that I’m wrong and it soars.

Just read at starwars.com that his original name is C1-10P. And if you look closely to the numbers you should recognize the word ‘CHOP’. And chopper is probably his nickname 😉

Ohhh, I see. That makes a lot more sense. I’m cool with them giving the little droid a nickname. The main characters will likely be younger adults or kids, afterall. Clever, very clever indeed.

Just how smart is this little droid!

I think it was in one of the Star Wars: Tales comics. The droid sabotaged his own or something, because he felt the force and was guided to do so. My memory could be fuzzy however…

@ Imperator – I think that’s not good logic. The force is for living things/beings? I don’t think a droid could feel/use the force.

this is exactly the kind of thing i hope they trim down in the SW EU…i dont want a story of every small detail that all interconnects to everything else…this is one of the reasons why i stopped reading EU, it was definitely making the universe a smaller place. not really complaining, i just stopped reading it, i do realize this is some people’s favorite thing about SW. i would like to read some new EU, but i would like it to be far less and fewer grandiose story where everything hinges upon everything else.

    • January 29, 2014 at 2:05 am
      Permalink

I agree to a certain extent. The problem is what classifies as canon and what doesn’t. However I think that ultimately nobody will be entirely happy, yet nobody will be entirely unhappy. I have my own opinions on what EU books are great, and what are abominations, yet if it means accepting the abominations to get the things I like into canon, then I accept that. I think that it would be excruciating to have the rug pulled out from underneath you in terms of the already established back stories suddenly being rendered null. Of course I’m sure I’ve caused some great offence to someone by suggesting this.

    • January 29, 2014 at 2:06 pm
      Permalink

I don’t believe they can make a sucessful movie with twists and unknowns without compromising the EU. In the EU, the story is already written. That’s the one big thing that I didn’t like about the PT going in. I knew pretty much what was going to happen. If it is so important to know the how’s and whys, then expand on it in a ST, but don’t make it the entire plot! The way the OT did it was great. With each installment, a little more of the history was revealed. It’d be great if they did something like this as to what has been happening between the OT and the ST. Like how the new villian came to be…etc. Back to the EU – If they go by the EU, then they might as well just be doing a remake of the EU. I believe what they are considering canon is the movies themselves. Everything else is just background noise. I like some of the EU, but it is not a clear, concise history.

i feel close to that, but Imperator made a good point for the EU fans, very politely i may add & it’s appreciated. i just keep thinking back to when i was growing up with Marvel SW comics…there was some great stories in those early days, with that real “what happens next?” feel to them…then they just up as said “nah, didn’t happen, here you go Darkhorse” and i just so see the corporate money grabbers doing the same again if they think profit is in it. i want a new story, no EU…but with respect to the EU fans, maybe they can work it out so it’s just not mentioned, but i really do see them bringing Chewbacca back, so wouldn’t that compromise all EU? and yes, i do agree with both Impernator & above anonymous, i do in fact like some of the EU…i own all novels between ’77 to ’05…some of it is great: Brian Daley’s han solo trilogy was as good as the movies in my opinion…others…not so much. maybe, just maybe there will be something for all of us and we can concentrate on that & be happy with a new SW.-Prymal

Okay – if he’s saying R2-D2 has the personality of a dog this Chopper has the personality of a cat then I have some questions for him. If you are programming a droid and can make it any personality you want, why make it a cat type personality? I have a cat but if I had the power to make a droid any personality, I choose dog.

Also, if R2D2 is a dog, then what is C3PO?

FUN FACT: the mousedroid in “a new hope” was a foot from r2d2 that fell off & they painted it black & let it move around. The scene was not planned, just one of those things that happens when filming, being creative on the spot 🙂

So when Chewbacca roared at the R2D2 foot, it decided to turn around and roll the other way? And this was unplanned?

“So when Chewbacca roared at the R2D2 foot, it decided to turn around and roll the other way? And this was unplanned?”

it was not planned, it was not in the script, but they thought it would be fun so they put it in the film & it ended up being one of the most loved scene for many people.

My source is a 7 hour long documentary (i can´t find it on youtube anymore) where they go through almost every scene in the OT trilogy talking about what happened behind the camera on the set, fun facts/trivia etc. …

Reminds me of the denial Hamill made. As if they didn’t know who was going to be in it AFTER THE SCRIPT WAS COMPLETE. There is no way they aren’t going to call forward in some way, even if that Mara Jade rumor turns out completely bogus. Especially considering the possibility of show episodes coming out while the movie is in theaters, depending on their schedule.

I can’t say I’ve really enjoyed Clone Wars, it seemed a little too kid-centric, with the bobblehead animation style in particular. I would enjoy a more serious focus, including proportional animation of the characters.

    Disney’s thought process:

“Hmmm, I know, let’s try to recreate the old magic so we don’t have to do think of anything new. How about a droid like R2D2, except we’ll give it a square head instead of a round one so people won’t think we’re retreading old ground. And we’ll make it red. What else? Hmm, let’s give it grease stains and junky components so the Original Trilogy fanatics won’t get mad. Because they hated the clean-shiny look of the prequel trilogy and we can’t afford to lose the Original Trilogy fans. Oh, but it won’t compete with other TV shows for boys, so I know, let’s give it mechanical arms, yeah, that’ll work! Random mechanical arms! Boys will think that’s cool. And names with numbers and letters are boring, so let’s call it Chopper because boys like chopping and hacking and lots of violence. There! WORK DONE!”

Okay, you don’t like OT… We get it. I know, how about we use the same PT characters we’ve seen for the passed 15 years? That’s really what people want!.. You fool.
Chopper’s design is based on Ralph McQuarrie’s original design for R2, including the mechanical arms. His name is C1-10P (CHOP or “chopper” for short), just as R2-D2 and C-3PO became Artoo and Threepio. Nicknames based on their title codes.

I think it is cool. It is a cool name, I like design. It is old school astromech. I think it is fun to give it some personality. For those who said it was dumb to give an astromech unit personality is an idiot. You trying to say our beloved R2 had/has no personality? watch all 6 episodes again. R2 is full of personality. Also the nickname CHOPPER is quite clever given the unit number C1-10P… Maybe not brilliant, but certainly clever and makes logical sense to satisfy us older gen fans as well a cool marketable name for the kiddos. As a 40-something year old fan, I like it.

Anyway, Rebels is going to be a great show. Perhaps spun in a slightly more kid-centric and friendly way but I think it will give us a nice bridge-gap and provide us some great story lines while we wait for E-VII… I am really looking forward to watching Rebels.
