New Curious Rumor About Luke’s Son & What We Know About The Characters So Far.

star wars

After the official announcement that Episode VII will be about a young trio of characters, here’s a recap of what we know about them from the several official casting sheets that have been revealed during the past year…

In June 19, 2013 the first casting call sheet revealed details about 7 characters. They were:

Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.

A late twenty-something male, fit, handsome and confident.

Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.

A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.

Forty something male, fit, military type.

Thirty-something male, intellectual. Apparently doesn’t need to be fit.

Seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour. Also doesn’t need to be particularly fit.

star wars

I’ve been hearing that Abrams and Kasdan started re-writing the script in July. Later on September 6, 2013 there was another casting call in New York, this time for 3 roles also found on the previous call sheet. They were looking for:

[YOUNG MAN] Early 20s. Handsome, but not necessarily heroic. He is witty and smart. Physically fit.

[MAN] Late 20s. Physically fit, handsome and confident.

[YOUNG WOMAN] Late teens. Physically fit, raw energy, independent and with a great sense of humor.

This suggests that the script re-writes didn’t have any impact on the main characters. And I heard other reports that the script re-writes were actually pretty informal and that the script is following the initial Lucas’ story. Which is great news.

So is this the description of the new lead trio? Most likely, yes.

Probably having troubles deciding on two of those characters, on November 6, 2013 the open auditions took place in the UK and the US. The roles were identical.

Young woman to play 17-18 Years old. Must be beautiful, smart and athletic. Open to all ethnicities (including bi- and multi-racial). Must be 16 or over.

Young man to play 19-23 years old. Must be handsome, smart and athletic. Must be 18 or over.

One should think that the role of the character “open to all ethnicities” is a perfect match for Lupita Nyong’o, unfortunately she is 31 which is much older than what they’re looking for. Actually most of the rumored actors so far are much older then the characters from the casting sheets.

star wars

And speaking about ethnicities here’s a very interesting rumor I’ve just heard.

The role that some of the black actors were up for is no other but Luke’s son! That’s right, you heard it very well. This could probably mean that he is adopted.

I really like this one. It’s a cool way of showing Luke following strictly the Jedi path, and Lucas always believed that Luke should never get married. This one directly contradicts with the rumor I told you before that Luke will have a love interest in Episode 7 but the sources are different. I can tell you one thing for certain. Luke will have a son in Episode 7. And I think it’s pretty safe to say that he won’t be called Ben Skywalker. The new audience will be confused with old Ben and they don’t want to do that. It could be even more confusing if we see Kenobi’s ghost in Episode VII, which is very probable.

star wars

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence but there are reports that LFL didn’t want Hasbro to release the 2nd version of Cade Skywalker and any new Ben Skywalker toys. Maybe they have plans for that name Cade… Just keep that in mind for now.

And the rumor of Luke having his own son or an adopted one could really go both ways because something else interesting I’ve heard is that they have several slightly different backstories which could change depending on who they cast. That’s why they’re auditioning such wide range of actors and that’s why it’s taking so long.

As always these are just rumors and nothing’s official for now. Take them as always with the appropriate dosage of salt.

And if you’re really sick of all the rumors, make sure to tune in tomorrow for some official tidbits, during Disney’s presentation at the Cinema Con hosted by Alan Horn. They will be discussing upcoming Marvel and Lucasfilm titles. It may not be much but surely they will talk about the new Star Wars movies… (via THR)

The only way I’d be cool with Luke having an adopted son (of any race), is that he also has a son by blood to carry on the Skywalker name. Why not have both? Have the black adopted son be the clear cut hero, and his son by blood is the one who dabbles in going to the dark side. Or whatever the internal conflict ends up being.

Otherwise, don’t bother. the Skywalker generational tale needs to go on with a blonde haired, blue eyed son like Anakin and Luke.

Luke taking a kid in would be kind of… epic. I dunno I just love the idea. Plus it fits in with the stupid prequel rule about celibacy. I realize all of this is still way early and rumor phase but I’m not against it.

Ben is clearly the best name for the character. With Luke’s huge respect and nod to old-ben kenobi he would definitely do that, and ‘Ben’ is a very normal and relatable name like ‘Luke’ which is what’s needed for the character. I have no idea why people would actually get confused by the name Ben, but I guess people are stupid.

Are they seriously caring about those stupid rules in the prequels about no children? That order was long gone by Luke’s time. He is the last of the Jedi, he is in charge and was never even told about the no kids rule anyway. But, seeing as George wrote the outlines I’m guessing he thought of the idea and they just stuck with it. So much for continuing the Skywalker narrative.*sigh* Come on JJ and co’, use your common sense people.

In clone wars yoda is told that “there is another skywalker”

Now maybe this character is the other skywalker

Now this idea isn’t new at all. In the Empire script following was pressent

She was Nellith Skywalker, and was being trained as a Jedi Master somewhere else at the same time Luke was. Of course, that implies that at that point there was a Jedi Master out there beyond Yoda and Obi-Wan.

Now maybe Lucas hasn’t scrap that idea and maybe he will use it in the sequels. The message to Yoda in the last Clone Wars chapter indicates this.

Because no bi-racial kids ever could look like non bi-racial kids. That would be impossible. I also think Luke should have a bio kid, but I don’t feel like he or she needs to be Aryan.

But even if he doesn’t, that doesn’t end the Skywalker narrative. Leia is just as much a Skywalker as Luke. A rose by any other name. Luke training nephew/niece would still be boss.

/sarcasm on the first sentence, if it wasn’t clear.

I like Luke eschewing the rules of the Old Jedi that led to Anakin’s fall. He can build a better Jedi Order. One that doesn’t feel the need to indoctrinate early to instill a contradictory dogma.

Interesting! Either approach could work very well (Luke having a son who is either blood kin or adopted) and I can see a number of possible storylines suggested by either one.

One thing I’ve been considering for awhile is the possibility that Luke’s son could end up having dark side troubles stemming from an unhealthy obsession with the fact that his grandfather was able to come back from the dark side after a couple decades as the scourge of the galaxy. Without Luke’s perspective from all he went through, I can see his son believing that he can find a way to turn the dark side on and off, given what his grandfather was able to do. (And of course, it’d all go horribly wrong…)

The black kid doesn’t have to be Luke’s biological son or adopted son. He could be Luke’s first padawan, but treated like a son. I would expect this kid to transition into the main Jedi after Luke’s story ends.

Oh no, female doctor doom somehow makes the story meaningless. Sam Jackson Fury is awesome. Usually the complaint is about changing characters, and the defense is “If black and female characters are under represented, why don’t we just make new characters, not change the classics!” Setting aside the problems with that argument, fine, here’s a brand new character. How is it “PC crap” to create new characters of any race or gender? They’re new, they carry no previous version to “corrupt.”.

I appreciate your opinion. And my point is really not to post only rumors from 100% credible sources. I post rumors that I find interesting and although the recast rumor didn’t feel right I posted it because the source is working on such a position at Lucasfilm that if I told you you would understand why I did it. Nevertheless I don’t feel bad about it. All the rumors I hear and discuss about come from 6 different sources. I’ve posted multiple rumors and so far one is debunked. You decide if I’m credible or not. And still don’t write the recast rumors out. Maybe they were for something completely different. We still don’t know anything about the other Disney projects.

First off I’m slightly alarmed at the idea of the story bending to the cast. To me that seems backwards. I realize that the rumor says it is with regard to minor changes to backstory but I sort of feel that where there’s smoke there’s fire. Hopefully not.

Secondly I guess Luke could adopt a son but it seems like they’d be bypassing an easy source of emotional attachment for no real gain. I can’t help but wonder if this ties into my earlier worry about writting to a cast (ing profile).

And finally why wouldn’t Luke name his son Ben? It makes too much sense and I can’t believe people would be that easily confused. I can only figure that it would just be to do something different for the sake of doing something different. Not my favorite reason for doing things …

Wouldn’t it be neat if they just said, “In SW galaxy, genetics don’t worry the same, and humans just have human kids off any “race” because humans are all one race in SW.” After all, physics is clearly different in their galaxy, what with space sound and dense asteroid fields and hyperdrive. Why not biology, too.

      Jeffrey,
Not only is that idea silly, but do you really want exposition in a SW film about why he has a genetic son who is black? It would have to be on film as it would be confusing otherwise. The suspension of disbelief would have to work overtime. We have had no hint that this is the case in any film and it just happens to pop up now??? Just make him adopted if he has to be black.

Does the character really have to be an adopted son? Could it be a Padawan who Luke has taken under his wing and training?

This scenario would not rule out Luke having a love interest in Episode VII. Luke’s love for a woman could be a downfall that starts things in motion for the antagonist. It was Anakin’s love of Padme that ultimately drove him to go to the Dark Side and become Sidious’ apprentice. Luke falling in love and wrestling with the Dark Side would be very ironic since his father struggled with the same thing.

Not saying I like or dislike that scenario. I’m just bringing up the possibilities.

FINALLY!!! Someone that says that Anakin fell to the Dark Side because of his love for Padme. I mean, I keep hearing everyone disagree with that and they say Luke is strong enough to resist the dark side, and that they hate the “Jedi’s shouldn’t love” rule , yatayatayata NO. People listen to me. I am not trying to start a fight, but not every movie needs romance and not every protagonist needs a husband/wife. And it seems like everyone is ignoring the fact that…

Anakin fell to the dark side because: He disobeyed the Jedi Order/#1 rule; When his mom died that made him angry and hurt and so he lashed out his feeling (mostly anger… I know that is kind of obvious) on the Tuscan Raiders/Sand People; He doesn’t like change (SW Ep. 1 TPM Anakin states that he doesn’t like change); He was jealous of Obi Wan; Anakin thought he was better than everyone, especially Obi Wan; He was willing to go behind the Jedi’s backs just so he could marry Padme

If I am missing something feel free to add to the list. Ahem, anyway, Anakin didn’t fall to the dark side because of the rule that Jedi’s shouldn’t love and that the Jedi take kids away from their parents so they can have early training (where did that come from anyway, the books? Comics? Some random website?) And grow in the force, etc. So, even though most of you (note that I said MOST of you) hate the PT, you have to go by what is in those movies, whether you like them or not. They are part of the SW Trilogy and Universe. While were on the subject of the PT, let me just say that the PT is of course going to look different than the OT. Why? Because it’s in the past. It’s a PREqual. PRE. Before. Behind. After. The PAST. Doctor Who. You see what I’m saying? It’s of course going to be shiny not gritty, it, of course, going to introduce us to new aliens (idk what else to call the other “people” in SW that aren’t humans), like (dare I say it) Gungans. (Please don’t hate me, I am just saying. That’s all) and Twi’leks and Togruta, etc. It’s supposed to look different than the OT because the PT is set in a different time period. And yes, maybe GL could’ve used less CGI (I for one wasn’t bothered by it so much, but hey, that’s just me) and go to places, but there was probably new technology that was coming out or was already out and GL wanted to try it all out. You don’t know what was going on in GL’s head when filming the PT’s and I am sure he had good intentions on it all even though most people hate the PT. Anyway, just so you know, this is all my opinion. Everyone has there own opinion and I am not forcing everyone to believe me and go along my my opinion. Please do not be offended. By this and if anyone was offended I am deeply sorry about that. Truly I am.

At last, some one who understands the different looks to both trilogies. Thank you Tigress. I remember reading an interview with GL before TPM came out and he explained that the PT will look like everything is nice and new because it’s pre-empire days. 20 years of Palpatines rule had taken it’s toll on the galaxy. He purged a lot of alien races, there was a lot of fear throughout the galaxy. That’s wht the OT looks the way that it does. One thing you might notice is that the PT has a lot of scope to them, the OT doesn’t. GL wanted the audience to feel that pre-empire days things were glorious. post-empire days things were pretty grim. I hope I’ve shed a bit of light on this subject. Some of you will get it and some of you won’t and that’s cool. I’ll probably get some smart assed comment too and that’s cool as well. But next time you watch the films think about what I’ve said and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

    • March 26, 2014 at 12:33 pm
      Permalink

I get all of that. I understand what the story was in the PT. My problem with the PT is that they were poorly made movies. The acting was bad, there were holes in the plot, there was zero chemistry between Anakin and Padme, etc. Also, the focus was on Anakin, who was not a likable character at all. Also, you cannot tell me that Jar-Jar binks enhances the Star Wars galaxy. My 5 year old son doesn’t even like him.

    • March 26, 2014 at 1:11 pm
      Permalink

The thing is, that’s not the only interpretation of the PT. It could also read that the Jedi were too stuffy and set in their ways. They maybe used to be what they think they are, but have become corrupt. Not overly, but they’re following a very literal interpretation of their rules. Their pride and blindness let them serve a government that was also becoming corrupt.

If the gov want corrupt, why did everyone agree with Palpatine. He tricked them, yes, but they were too wiling to believe what they wanted to hear. Not corrupt like scheming, corrupt like shortsighted and dogmatic. If the Jedi aren’t corrupt, why do they hang out with senators in their palace-temple instead of going and liberating the slaves on Tatooine? Why do they allow themselves to be drawn into a war without thinking it through? Why do they preach patience and restraint and then never practice it?

Qui-Gon wanted to reform. He saw that they were slipping. Dooku saw it too, but thought they were too far gone and bailed. Notice he’s the only one who fights with restraint and economy of motion, like OT.

Anakin fell to the Dark Side because he was too possessive, not because he was in love. The Jedi had no way of dealing with Anakin’s feelings as they were only used to dealing with brainwashed infants. They were wrong in their belief that attachments were wrong for a Jedi. They suppressed their feelings rather than confronting them and using them in a positive way. If Qui-Gon had lived he may have been able to help Anakin work through his feelings and together they could have reformed the Jedi.
Luke showed that attachments are not wrong when he saved his father rather than killing him as Yoda and Ben told him to do. Luke rejected the idea of “letting go” of the people you love and saw the good in his father. He used his attachment to his father in a positive way and saved the Galaxy.

Sure, they’re not the leads. But that’s because society keeps assuming they can’t be.

Perhaps the disconnect in this discussion is thus:

You’re saying audiences wouldn’t relate as well. I actually do not disagree. They probably wouldn’t. However, I’m talking about what OUGHT to be, not what IS. We ought to be able to relate and empathize with aliens. Exposure to their point of view, as leads, not just wacky sidekicks, might help with that. We OUGHT to already relate to any other human, regardless of race, because we can’t solve our problems without doing so, and because there’s no good reason we ought to have trouble with this.

To avoid straying too far from SW: Luke understands this Buddha/Christ-like love.

Making the black kid a beloved padawan is…perfect. In fact, I like it better than the adopted son idea. That way, there can be some kind of love and conflict between Luke’s actual son, and the padawan that has grown up LIKE a son to Luke. There’s a LOT of room for a great character arc there for both young characters. And by being a padawan, it opens up to the possibility of a love interest with one of the female leads.

In Cowboys vs Aliens, there were two male characters that had this dynamic with Harrison Ford of all people. The actual son (who was a douche), and the Indian who was raised with the family who wanted to be a good son to Ford’s character. I can REALLY see that concept working for this new trilogy, but with the douchy son going through the character arc of becoming a man and a better person across three films.

Also, doesn’t adopting a child bring about the same kind of forbidden attachment the Jedi order wouldn’t allow? Whether your child is by blood or adopted, you are going to do anything for them. I can’t see the old Jedi order rule applying. I’m more inclined to believe this is a padawan.

Well, the old Jedi Order’s rules didn’t end up doing them much good, did they? I think it’s just as likely (and logical) that Luke would start the new Jedi Order with a clean slate, rather than just re-establishing the rules and bureaucracy of a Jedi Order that failed due largely to its own institutional blind spots.

A decent amount of the Jedi archives were destroyed, and it’s not like Ben or Yoda ever said anything to him about being celibate so it’s very reasonable that he doesn’t know. And besides, he wasn’t taught that attachment and personal relationships are bad, they’re what gave him strength at the end of the day. I also have to doubt the likelihood of Luke trying to take infants into his new Order, so I think it’s fair to say that any apprentices or acolytes not related to the Skywalker’s or the Solo’s would’ve joined by their own free will and likely being older then the jedi padawans in the PT.

This. If Luke followed the old Jedi way, he never would have redeemed Vader. He succeeds where the Jedi failed because he understand compassion in a way they don’t. He did what Kenobi believed impossible. Even Yoda was wrong in this. He told Luke not to go into the cave, not to go to Bespin. Without knowing who Vader was, without seeing that he could BECOME Vader, Luke would have failed. The Jedi weren’t beaten by a superior foe. They were prideful and set in their ways and following a fundamentalist version of their code while serving a government instead of the force. A smart for took advantage of the corruption that was already there.

Which, by the way, is why many fans feel the Jedi were depicted wrong in the PT. It wasn’t a mistake. The Jedi didn’t feel right because they WEREN’T quite right. Their intentions were good but they were blinded by their own success.

Jeffrey, I agree wholeheartedly with darned near everything you write there. I still think that it was tremendously lazy of Lucas to make the Jedi just another corrupt bureaucracy just like the Senate. All that did was to make the eventual disastrous outcome inevitable, which I felt took a lot of the drama out of the whole thing. A close game is, after all, a helluva lot more interesting and engaging than a one-sided blowout.

But as far as Luke’s take on the Jedi Order, I agree that it would tend to reflect his own personality and worldview rather than just being a continuation of the way the old Jedi Order operated. I don’t expect to see denial of the importance of friends and family in the new Jedi, nor do I expect a return to things like the old Order’s baby-swiping trip. (At least I HOPE they don’t just have him go back to the same old crap that doomed the original Jedi. Again, IMHO that would just be lazy, uninspired writing.)

    • March 26, 2014 at 1:37 pm
      Permalink

They weren’t as bad as the Senate and half their problem was assuming the Senate wasn’t problematic itself. A good filmic tragedy uses the totally understandable flaws of the protagonists to destroy them. Likewise, is totally understandable that Anakin loves his mother and Padme. In fact, they’re the root of his Jedi compassion. His mother and surrogate mother figure are the reason he wants to do good and help people. The Jedi confuse him. They want him to keep the effect without the cause. The Jedi confuse themselves, which is why they won’t train anyone but toddlers. Obi-Wan is a true believer and he preaches the code while absolutely relishing in being a laser sword wizard and snarking at Sith while having a field day having apart droids cause they don’t count, even though he’s friends with two droids that regularly display personhood.

And even for all that, it IS still a close game. Anakin wasn’t needed for Palatine’s plan, but he was the clincher. Windu figured it out at the last moment and might’ve stalemated the whole thing if not for Anakin.

Why couldn’t Luke simply be involved in an inter-racial relationship?

    • March 26, 2014 at 12:55 am
      Permalink

They could, but why? Isn’t the natural inclination in doing a generational tale like the Skywalker story to have children resemble their parents? Aren’t audiences going to be looking for Luke’s son to resemble his father? Whether it’s on a conscious or subconscious level, I think the audience kind of NEEDS that to link back to an earlier story. It happens in real life, sure, but this is a fantasy story and the Skywalker narrative needs to make sense visually.

And the padawan theory sounds great the more I think about it. Hell, what if the padawan (who is a black male actor) has BEEN with Luke all these years, and his biological son has been living with his mother? Maybe the son comes into the story as the outsider and not the padawan? What if the son is jealous of the relationship the other kid has with his father, one that he should have had? Could he be seduced into going to the dark side because of this conflict, at least in part?

The skywalker story is generational and cyclical; we are bound to see more ‘sins of the father’ play themselves out in the new trilogy. They could do so much here to call back on the other two trilogies in a new way.

It seems natural to you because that’s the way stories have always done it. It’s the repetition of the narrative. Stories have always done it that way because of racism. It’s time to change the narrative. I’m not saying you’re prejudiced, but I am saying you’re overlooking systematic racism. For those who might not know, prejudice is individual hatred. Systematic racism is built into society, not any one person’s doing. It’s easy to overlook, but once you see it, is time to reexamine your assumptions.

Yeah…it’s Star Wars. I would say ‘stories having always done it that way being because of racism’ just doesn’t apply in this case. I think Luke can have a blue eyed, blonde hair son that resembles him without it being anything we need to feel guilty about.

I think adding diversity to the cast is a great thing that should be done this time around. With new characters that make sense.

I didn’t say anyone needed to feel guilty, I said we should try to change problems once we figure out what they are. We should correct our bias, not mope that we ever had one. Including a black son does nothing to the tone. It doesn’t make it ‘tree-huggy’. You are ascribing your assumptions about what I think to me. Ironically, the movies are already about universal love. That’s how Luke redeemed Vader. He saw good in his enemy, the guy who killed his mentor, because finding out he was his father made him reexamine his assumptions.

I hear ya. Its getting over the top ridiculous. I don’t mind diversity but forcing Luke to have a child of another race is obviously a PC move. Now if they would do a Mace relative or Lando I think most would be fine with that.

    • March 26, 2014 at 3:07 pm
      Permalink

The thing is, you’re using the word forcing. You’re assuming loving a person of a different race would be an unusual thing to do, thus doing it is forcing something into the story. But it’s only unusual because of systematic racism. If Luke is past such things, then the odds of Luke falling in love with a black woman depends solely on what percentage of women around him are black. If the Star Wars galaxy has the same racial mix as ours, then there are just as many black people as white, and the majority are Asian. White is not the default human being.

    • March 26, 2014 at 6:06 pm
      Permalink

However, the majority of people of a race tend to prefer and marry within their own race. It does happen that a white person would marry an Asian person, but that is outside the norm. While it’s not right to discriminate against those who do choose to marry outside their race, it’s also wrong to discriminate against a decision to keep a character marrying inside his race in a hollywood movie. If you do decide a character is going to marry outside his race, then most likely the focus is going to be on that decision and that is a disservice to the story as a whole. If you want to make a statement about marrying outside of one’s race is okay, make an entire movie about it.

    • March 26, 2014 at 7:10 pm
      Permalink

As with a thread above. You’re right, this is how it is. But it is this way because of systematic racism, in every culture, not just white culture. We’re still getting used to the fact that we’re all one thing: human, not different warring tribes who can’t communicate with one another.

I’m talking about what OUGHT to be. It ought not be a big deal. It ought to not have to be the focus of the story, because it ought not even register as unusual. Because the fact that its unusual says something about our societies. We’ve maaaaybe gotten to where we don’t consider other races as inferior. But we haven’t gotten to the point where we don’t still consider them as outside, a different tribe, which is why people “prefer and marry within their own race”. We can be better than that. Its a process we’re already engaged in.

    • March 26, 2014 at 7:28 pm
      Permalink

Who said anything about other races being inferior. You are putting words in people’s mouths. Just because someone (or most people) prefer to marry their own kind it doesn’t make them a bad person. It’s like telling me I should consider all hair colors instead of going for my personal taste. Gentlemen prefer blondes. Don’t tell me I should date a brunette just so I can be more diverse. Same thing with Star Wars. Some would prefer Luke to be married to a blonde haired blue eyed girl. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Jeffrey, if I can infer from your avatar that you are white and are married to a white woman, then you OUGHT to be married to a korean woman. Instead, you are playing it safe. Take your own wise words and find yourself an alien wife and be an example for all the human race.

the biggest reason for Luke to have a biological son or daughter is because of blood, the reason Luke was so strong in the force (& Leia so intuitive) was because Anakin had the highest count of midichlorians ever measured in a living being, for me that is the biggest reason for Luke & Leia to have biological children, if Lucas´ says that: “star wars is a multigenerational saga about the skywalker family” then there should be biological children, skywalker children would be stronger in the force then other forcesensitive children. all big dramas is about family & adopted children often confuses things (it´s great that people adopt in real life though)

Alright, I’ve just been thinking of a few kind of unrelated things, but nevertheless they might be interesting to think about.

(Please excuse any random/misspelled words, I’m writing this on my phone)

    Alright, first idea:

So, ik Disney is going to be reshuffling and gutting the EU, but is it possible that they’re taking names of VERY undeveloped EU characters and turning them into movie characters? Here’s some names throw out there:

    -Ardus Kaine
    -Blitzer Harrsk
    -Zsinj
And there are tons more. It just makes sense that they’d be gutting the EU, but still incorporating a lot of it in there.

    Idea #2

Is it possible that they’re gutting the EU BECAUSE of the movies’ timeframe? I mean, they might be doing this BECAUSE of how old the actors are, ie changing the time the thrawn trilogy or something happens so that they can incorporate the events. And, like Lucas did with AOC and Boba/Jango Fett, he could just have the story group be reshuffling events.

Just some interesting stuff to think about.

To me the idea of “celibate” Jedi was done away with when Luke became a Jedi. That is an old, stupid, tradition that hampered the Jedi and, along with only training infants, led to their inability to properly train Anakin. The Jedi tried to suppress their feelings rather than dealing directly with them (maybe this is something Yoda was learning in those last CW episodes). Luke proved that attachments were not evil when he refused to kill his father as Yoda and Ben told him to [which, according to Lucas was a test by them and they actually wanted him to choose to save him – I prefer Luke going beyond their training and becoming a true Jedi by going against their advice]. Though I do like the idea of an adopted son who has to come to see that he is just as real a Skywalker as his brother or sister.
