Official: Star Wars: Episode 7 is Set 30 Years After ROTJ. Filming Starts in May!

star wars

The news we all have been waiting for is here. Just a day after the recast rumor was posted we can lay it down to rest. Open the champagne everyone, some very familiar faces are returning…

From StarWars.com

Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London’s historic Pinewood Studios.

This will be the first Star Wars film to start shooting in the month of May. Lucasfilm has documented the first day of principal photography for every installment of the Star Wars saga:

March 22, 1976 — The first day of principal photography in Tozeur, Tunisia, for Star Wars. A crew of 130 ventures into the desert in 42 trucks and cars, including eight army trucks full of equipment. The first shot was completed at 9:35 a.m.

March 5, 1979 — The first day of principal photography in Finse, Norway, for The Empire Strikes Back. The crew endures the subzero temperatures, frostbite, heavy winds, and avalanches to pull off the first shot within 65 minutes of setup.

January 11, 1982 — The first day of principal photography at EMI Elstree Studios outside of London for Return of the Jedi. Although inside a studio, the set must weather a sandstorm in a scene that would ultimately be cut from the film.

June 26, 1997 — The first day of principal photography at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, for The Phantom Menace. Ending a long absence from the director’s chair, George Lucas shoots a sequence in a bluescreen-lined set with actors Ian McDiarmid and Ray Park.

June 26, 2000 — The first day of principal photography for Attack of the Clones at Fox Studios Australia. In their new home Down Under, the production crew once again photographs actor Ian McDiarmid three years to the day after Episode I started shooting.

June 30, 2003 — The first day of principal photography for Revenge of the Sith at Fox Studios Australia. The first scenes shot feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively, along with R2-D2.

It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces. No further details on casting or plot are available at this time.

This is just what we all needed. That official statement was very important to ease our doubts about the upcoming movie.

My personal apology to all of you for even mentioning the recast possibility. To be honest my sources told me to wait a little bit with this but I wanted to post it and share it with you quickly. There’s much to learn in the blogging thing. At least you all can be sure that I’ll always be honest with you and everything I do is with good intentions.

I also received apologies from the sources that shared the recast rumor from yesterday but I don’t blame them. They just told what they heard and they were pretty confident. However sorry again and let’s enjoy this first official announcement from the last 4 months. I’m sure there’s plenty more to come.

at Forever_ and Ian…. Actually, Anonymous 3:42 am has a point. When the debate about the return of the originals might happen or not, many fans of the prequel generation was yaping about how they could care less about their return and said quit living in the past. And yes, to the old staw wars fans, you prequel fans are children to them. So back track on what you say. Anonymous 3:42 mad a great point.

Excellent news indeed! This brings us back to what I think most of us originally expected the movie to be, at least generally speaking. And it makes perfect sense. A few decades between trilogies, the main characters from the previous trilogy now filling the approximate type of role that Ben Kenobi filled in the original movie, the new generation of heroes taking the reins… sounds like a perfectly logical jumping-off place for the new trilogy.

A rumor Carrie was doing drugs. A casting call to play the big three for a theme park or whatever. Hard to be relieved, when there were thousand indicators that the 3 would return… There is a reason professional outlets usually handle rumors, take for example: Source said that Dark Horse Comics will be more involved in Star Wars, JediNews dropped him like a sack of potatoes.

I agree. Disney owns that show and also owns Star Wars. I think they’re bringing him out to drum up interest in him and then they’ll bring him back for the movie.

Based on what? I haven’t seen anything to indicate either way. And why would Disney put him on TV right now only to snub him. He’s repeatedly publically said that he wants to be in the movie.

Something tells me, that Billy Dee William’s version of getting sent to a private trainer like Fisher and Hamill are, is appearing on Dancing With the Stars. Overweight stars that go on that show lose weight and get into shape.

    • March 18, 2014 at 11:11 pm
      Permalink

Just based on the fact he hasn’t hinted of his involvment like the others, and that he’s not loosing weight. Plus if Chewie, 3po, r2, luke, leia, and Han are back. Bringing in secondary characters like Lando would be a bit overbaring. I can see them bringing in yoda for a quick scene. But Lando’s involvement would need to be a reason, which they would better spend the time focusing on the others. Although it would be cool, they can’t stuff too many eggs in one basket.

    • March 19, 2014 at 12:06 am
      Permalink

So in other words you’re 80% sure he’s not coming back because in your opinion you don’t think he should be in the movie. OK.

    • March 19, 2014 at 2:31 am
      Permalink

Okay guys, watch the video of his performance on Dancing with the Stars and tell me that’s not a marketing ploy. Him and Emma dance to the Star Wars theme, the stage is all star wars theme, R2 is there, ewoks are there, and finally dancing stormtroopers. Come on guys he’s 77 and can barely move. If anything he will just appear as a cameo, no running around blasting people with blasters.

“So in other words you’re 80% sure he’s not coming back because in your opinion you don’t think he should be in the movie. OK.”
…No, you clearly didn’t read my comment. I’m 80% sure he won’t be in the film because he isn’t loosing weight like the others, he hasn’t hinted at it like others, and they wouldn’t want to overshadow the original cast, especially if characters like 3PO and Chewie are back too. This has nothing to do with my opinion. I even said “it would be cool”.. Face reality you idiot.

    • March 19, 2014 at 4:32 pm

I could actually see Lando as a successful and powerful businessman/governor type rather than as a swashbuckling hero. A fat, contented man of power and privilege after a few decades of building on the kind of experience he first developed as administrator of Cloud City.

That would make for a perfect justification for including him in the ST at some point, if the main characters needed something in Lando’s sector of the galaxy and he was the guy who could help them to get it via his influence and connections.

      Just a thought.

Your a fool if you DON’T think Lando will be in this movie. By return of the jedi he was just as important a character as the other’s. he destroyed the fucking second death star and he became a General…..why WOULDNT he be in this movie? overshadow the original 3? gimme a break…

In regards to the cast announcements, there’s something about the 16th that catches my eye. Now, I don’t know which month of the 16th, but I just think it will be the 16th… I’m hardly a news blogger or anything so don’t take me seriously, but somebody on twitter is saying the cast will be announced on the 16th of April. Shooting is in mid- May so it could be the 16th of May, and Disney have just announced the dates of D23, which also includes the 16th.(14th-16th) although that is August. Just my lame theory and speculation.

So if they were to follow the current EU timeline (which unfortunately they’re not), this would be set just after (or during, depending on how accurate they were about the 30 year statement) the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. I wonder if they will stay true to the children of the current big three – Anakin, Jacen and Jaina and Ben.

    • March 18, 2014 at 9:02 pm
      Permalink

Forget about the EU. Pablo Hidalgo was very clear when said that the only Star Wars Canon so far is Episode 1-6 and TCW. Of course the upcoming TV series Rebels, the ST and the spin-off movies will also be considered Canon.

    • March 18, 2014 at 10:28 pm
      Permalink

The funny part to me is that they decided to keep TCW completely as canon. I would expect most fans would prefer keeping the names of Jaina and Jacen to keeping around the idea that Darth Maul didn’t die in Episode I (and before others jump on me – I loved TCW, I just know when they jumped the shark a bit).

While I completely believe Harrison, Mark, and Carrie will be in Ep. VII, they did not say “several familiar faces,” they said “some very familiar faces.”

Also, there’s no guarantee yet, that all three are signed on.

“Some very familiar faces” could mean R2-D2, C-3PO, Chewbacca, Luke, and Leia, but no Han (or “any variant combination” as stated above).

Again, I think they will all be in it, but we still need confirmation of that.

Sure. I could see anywhere from Luke, Leia, Chewi, Threepio, and R2, to also adding Han and even Lando, and maybe even force ghost Yoda, force ghost Emperor, Wedge Antilles, Mon Mothma (recast), all kinds of familiar faces. But I think Luke, Chewie and the droids are the absolute minimum at this point.

They’re already fighting fit to be honest. Mostly depends on if Mark is going to do any fighting or not. I do seriously wonder if Mark is going to have a lightsaber duel. I really hated the idea at first, but every time I think about it I love the idea more and more. Similar to old-ben’s fight with Vader. No massive choreography was needed, it was about the actual love and respect for the character. Big is not always better and I loved that about old-ben’s duel. We have 3 films for fast paced lightsaber duels with the next generation. I’d like to see Mark have a bash one last time.

Yeah, I love the tension and importance in the original saga duels. Everybody says the best fight is between Maul, Qui-gon, and Obi-wan.. Maul and Qui-gon are boring characters apart from their look. I don’t understand how star wars has become so shallow to so many people. I love duels with tension and high stakes and actual good characters. Choreography and the scenery have nothing to do with anything apart from aesthetics, which are meaningless without decent characters that are fighting. I prefer slower fights anyway, there’s more humanity and relatablity in it. Prequel fights were way too fast, obviously fake and obviously choreographed. Old-ben vs Vader looked real because it didn’t look rehearsed at all and there was no music, no offense to John WIlliams, but having fast paced music in a duel dissolves the tension and just makes it about the speed and the action.

What the hell, you want all The Walking Dead Cast in S7? hahahahah. Could be good, Norman and Lauren are good actors, Mila Kunis is not that much actress, but I’d like to see her in a Star Wars film.

I think what this means Luke will be back for sure. Also seems like Chewie is coming back. And C-3PO and R2D2. So I think those four are basically guaranteed at this point.

    Leia I’d put at 99%.

Han, probably, but there’s at least some room for doubt. So say 95%.

Lando maybe 50/50. Disney (which owns Star Wars) put him on Dancing with the Stars, so there’s reason to believe he’ll be in the movie but maybe he won’t be.

      Luke, Leia, Han = 100%.

Chewie = insignificant. Let him die like in the EU.

Lando = who? You mean that minor, minor, minor character from Empire and Jedi? Sure… add him if you want. Irrelevant, but it’d add some nice continuity.

No Lando please. Just.. no. He was not a main character, he had hardly any screentime. Why put him back in it? He was important to the story because he blew up the death star, well that could have been any character they chose to do that. He is replaceable and not relevant anymore.

“Lando = who? You mean that minor, minor, minor character from Empire and Jedi?”

You mean the guy who led the attack on the second deathstar and destroyed it, thus successfully achieving the rebellion’s ultimate goal of eradicating imperial control? Yeah… That “insignificant” character…

      “he had hardly any screentime”

He had much more screentime than Qui-Gon, Jango and Maul and they’re all considered vital characters. What have you guys got against the one black dude in the OT with a speaking role?

All I care about is the Solo kids (all three) appearing, so I’m a bit worried. I care more about the EU characters than I do about the EU itself. I don’t care how the Solo kids are re-imagined (well, I care a little; I don’t want a Darth Caedus or whatever) as long as they’re in the ST.

I would be more thrilled about the news if it weren’t for that and a couple of other things.

You should re-read all of the books because that’s the only way you’re going to visit the EU EVER.

Except I don’t care about the EU. I don’t mind seeing it destroyed (I hate everything Del Rey’s done, so no love lost there! Bantam, I loved, but I don’t mind if it’s not canon, matter of a fact, I prefer it not being all connected). But I love the characters from the EU. And the Solo kids are at the top of my list of what I would like to see saved. That’s it.

    30 Years.

Wouldn’t that put it around the Yuuzhan Vong?

I’m just saying, that’d be pretty cool.

However, the EU is pretty much ruled out at this point. I am indeed very saddened.

EU is NOT ruled out. Remember, Lucasfilm formed the story committee, which will decide what to keep in the EU and what not to keep. So while everything you’ve read in these books will not crossover to the film world, don’t rule out everything yet.

We aren’t going to know how to reform the canon until after this trilogy. We can retcon the Vong war a few years later once all’s said and done.

Agreed, this has no impact on EU-related rumors. The best assumption remains that EU characters will serve as the basis of new characters. Parts of previously existing plots may well be used also.

30 years. Let’s see now. JJ likes to:
    1. Alter or twist original plot points/character like how he did the klingon/Khan. So I assume he’ll bring in Yuuzhan Vong (or some other name) but somehow link their lack of force presence to them being related to Sith.

    2. He likes to start with either a prologue (trek) or plunge in ( MI3), so it might start with Han and company rescuing refugees and the moon coming down…

    CHEWIE!!! …

Too bad Abrams didn’t write a single part of the new Trek movies…
Director and writer are very different positions. This project will be very different from the latest Trek movies because:
      1) Abrams is bridging the gap between writer and director with the help of trustworthy Star Wars veterans like Kasdan and Lucas.

      2) Abrams has been a Star Wars fan his entire life. He even credits the OT as being one of the primary inspirations that helped launch his love for film making. He’s considered himself a “late-in-life Trekkie” since he accepted the duties of director for those movies.

There’s absolutly no way in hell we can predict what’s “probably” going to happen in these next three installments. Yes, speculations are fun, as long as they’re at least a little accurate. Look into these things before posting expected plot points like bringing back the Yuuzhan Vong. It’s already been confirmed by the story team that the redefined canon only includes episodes 1-6, TCW, the upcoming Rebels series and the soon-to-come ST. No recognizable plot points derived from the EU will be included.

Don’t you remember Anon how Trek fans were upset with JJ because his Star Trek movie was too much like Star Wars?

We as Star Wars fans may have just struck gold with JJ at the helm.

Thank you for your agreement on this topic, @Rebel Scum! I don’t understand why people think jumping to irrational conclusions makes any sense at all whatsoever. Why make claims with no evidence, especially on a Star Wars fan site?

I only agree with smart and objective people!

I can imagine that the story turned in by Michael Arndt didn’t have enough of the old school Star Wars in it, so JJ corrected the situation and made sure the new Star Wars movies will be a good transition from the older generation to the new. I believe Amdt’s story didn’t focus on the big three enough, which JJ KNEW would be a disservice to the fans.

I have faith that we will see a well rounded mix of OT stars and PT coming into their on in EPVII.

I’m so excited to see what Abrams does with EpVII. If it were anyone else, I’d probably be a little more concerned, but he’s assured the fans time after time that the ST is in good hands.

I just don’t see a reason in leaving him out of EpVII if he’s so willing to reprise the role. There’s so much you could do with his inclusion in the story. I’m confident that he will be in the next installment, but I wouldn’t be devastated if he wasn’t; just confused as to what happened to him in the thirty years between EpVI and EpVII. They should at least breifly mention his whereabouts if he’s not going to actually be in the movie.
