Lucasfilm Confirms Future Star Wars Games Will be Canon.

games

Just a few days after the official announcement about the Star Wars canon, a LucasFilm representative confirmed to GameSpot that upcoming Star Wars games such as DICE’s Battlefront and Visceral’s new Star Wars game being written by former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Uncharted actor Todd Stashwick will be considered canon…

From 4playernetwork:

The new direction of the Star Wars canon could explain why games such as Star Wars 1313 were cancelled and not just handed off to other developers.
“If 1313 ever does resurface, it will probably only be after several alterations to ensure the game stays in line with official canon.

star wars

The recent delay of the latest expansion for another EA title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, is unrelated to the official canon announcement. The Lucasfilm rep stated that:

“As far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. TOR has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that’s not going to change.”

So, at the very least, The Old Republic era of Star Wars will not be discarded with the rest of the Expanded Universe. This could mean that era of the Star Wars timeline can remain open to authors and game developers to work with. Of course, this could also just be Disney/LucasFilm not wanting to shut down a $200 million MMO that is so far back in the timeline that it is inconsequential to the films anyway.

  1. I wonder how the new games will influence what we’ll see in future Star Wars movies.

    2. Typical OT fanatic. Lucasfilm states that ALL episode films are canon and here you are, bitching and complaining because things don’t go your way. By the way, that’s “non canon,” not “none cannon.”

    3. He’s not saying the prequels didn’t go his way. I think we can all agree the darth vader “nooooooooooo!” & Jar Jar shouldn’t be cannon haha (maybe pick a different actor for Anakin as well). I actually did enjoy the prequels but there’s a lot of cringe worthy moments. I’d like to see them re-filmed and re-written by JJ.

    5. Episode 3 is where Darth yells “noooooooo!’ (when I went to see it with a friend on opening night he literally laughed… I could only face palm).

There’s the buzz droids in the first battle scene, which I felt sort of really detracts from the epic feel of the battle. Couldn’t we see some dog fighting/more blowing up of capital ships instead?

And Yoda’s CGI’d walking cane… a stick would have looked better, along with a muppet yoda cuz He looked pretty fake. But yeah aside from that it’s the best of the 3 films I think.

    1. I was kind of confused with their last post. So, everything Post-ROTJ is gone?

That kinda sucks. Thrawn was the best part of the EU.

      Also, here’s something interesting:

They said they were going to “take inspiration from the EU(or in other words, mine)”

They will probably take elements of things like the Imperial Remnants(Again, people like Ardus Kaine are probably the most underdeveloped characters), and would be GREAT to put in the new movies.

Do you think minor EU characters may play a part? Or they at least pay homage to the more well known ones?

    2. They just said that SWTOR is canon so I’m not sure how its “never been canon”. It’s an active game and the easiest way to figure what is going to be canon is to follow the $$$.

    3. No they didn’t. They said it will always be EU. EU is now synonymous with non-canon. Notice they never refer to new material as EU.

    4. NO they said its part of EU nothing more. But there are certain things thats in the game that is very much canon and thats all the mayor characters like Revan, Malgus,Satele etc.Rest is just game mecanics understand ? in the game you do silly things like buy saber crystals with cradits etc all just game mecanics that have nothing to do with the real SW universe.

    5. They do need to clarify the terms but I’m reasonably confident because what I said makes financial sense. I know a lot of people just want to blow everything up (not sure why really) but that doesn’t seem like smart business in this case.

    6. Or it could be that they honestly don’t know at this point in time and are being intentionally confusing. That would make sense if they had tentative plans to develop in that era but didn’t want to “upset the apple cart” at the moment.

    7. I don’t want to just blow everything up, I’m just saying what my reading of the text indicates. I could be wrong. I don’t think they’re too worried about money from TOR, because Disney doesn’t make direct sales cash from it, just liscensing fees. They’ll make money as long as Bioware has the liscense. Canon or not.

    8. I didn’t mean you specifically. At the very least they would be giving up publicity for no discernable reason. TOR is a foothold into the online gaming world and the only way I could see them jeopardizing it is if they needed to because of some conflict with other plans (which is possible).

    1. For the time being the answer is yes. However, they are going to consider incorporating elemnets of the old EU into the new canon. The only things currently in the canon are the 6 movies (7 if TCW counts) and material that is active (Clone Wars, SWTOR, upcoming Rebels show). Since SWTOR is canon I think Viral is figuring that the Old Rebublic era will not be touched for now since that story requires elements of others (KOTOR I and II) to stand.

  7. “As far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. TOR has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that’s not going to change.”. All of the Expanded Universe is not canon. Only the games created and books written going forward, as well as the movies, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars: Rebels are considered canon.

  8. Viral, I think your interpretation of that quote is off. They’re not confirming Old Republic is still canon, they’re saying it’s not. The Old Republic has always been part of the Expanded Universe and it will stay that way. The new canon isn’t called Expanded Universe. It’s just The Star Wars Universe. So Old Republic staying EU means it is staying as part of the old canon, which is no longer considered canon.

    2. Notice that they never use the term EU when talking about new material. EU is now synonymous with old canon.

I could be wrong, of course, but language is funny like that. I read the same exact quote and took away the opposite meaning, so at very least this isn’t a definitive statement that TOR is canon.

    3. I never said TOR is canon. I said they’re not discarding it for now, like the rest of the EU.

    4. Sure, but I still disagree with that statement. They’re discarding it just as much as they’re discarding the rest of the EU, in my understanding. They put it in the same boat as everything else labeled EU. They’re not shutting down servers or anything, but Disney doesn’t own the servers, so that’s moot, but as far as the plot goes, my reading is that those characters and stories are and have always been EU, that is to say, tentatively canon, and this they will go the way of the rest of the EU.

PS, I’m not saying this is good, just that I think that’s what they’re saying, before I get replies from Anon claiming I just want to watch the world burn.

    6. Viral, I guess I’m unclear what your distinction is between non-canon and ‘discarded’. IMHO, the only way in which they are discarding the EU is by saying it’s not canon, so in this case those terms seem equivalent.

    9. I see your argument, Jeffrey. It does seem that the term “Expanded Universe” has become synonymous with “non-canon material”. However, it has also been stated that all material moving forward whether it be novels, comics, games or otherwise will be considered canon. TOR expansion as of right now has only been delayed, and it seems to be unrelated to canonical issues. If this expansion doesn’t end up getting cancelled and production for this game continues, I think we can assume that this era can be accepted into the universal canon. Time will tell. I just feel like Disney, Abrams, Kennedy, Kasdan, Filoni, etc. have instructed everyone involved with future SW multimedia to be as vague as possible, to make people think they are getting news, but not really telling them anything. The different interpretation of this quote and many others is proof of this. They may decide to completely disregard this era of EU in the future and be like, well we did say it was part of the “expanded universe.” It was never declared canonical. Who knows anything substantial at this point?

    10. That does raise a question I know nothing about: What, besides 1313 was in the works that WAS canceled? I guesses Dark Horse is losing the license, too, now that I think about it, so their line is canceled. They have time to finish out current arcs though. Are the novels at least at a decent stopping point? I mean I know people will always want more, but are they in the middle of a major arc? I spotted reading at YV. Seemed very shark-jumpy to me.

    11. Hard Case, I see what you mean. You could be absolutely correct, but I also think this might be less intentionally vague and more a miscommunication. They feel like it’s clear, but people will read their expectations. Personally, I don’t feel like an expansion is the same as new material, in the same way that the next issue of Dark Horse’s SW comic wool technically be ‘new’ but really is just finishing up an old project that is not canon.

When a company says new, I feel like they’re referring to anything they greenlight from now on. There may be some licensees whose contact does not allow Disney to instantly cancel, again, like Dark Horse. They can deny renewal, but they can’t tell them to cancel immediately and leave stories unfinished, because their specific contact probably doesn’t allow it.

Similarly, FFG is soon going to print an E-Wing for their X-Wing game, but just because it’s coming out after their presses release doesn’t mean E-Wings are going to remain in canon.

    13. The canon is, and always has been, subject to change. But in terms of the current canon I feel like they’re not going to remove things unless there is a reason to do so, especially if there’s even a cent to be made off of it. Even the stuff that they are being forced to remove (old post-ROTJ EU) is being branded with a a Legends title so that they can still attempt to leverage it. Whether they get caught trying to “have their cake and eat it to” on that one will be interesting to see but I don’t blame them for trying.

does this mean that people like me , who only watch the films , will have to watch a load of cartoons and buy games we dont like in order to understand whats going on in the future films? if not then cool , if so then i wont bother with the films .

    2. We’ve never needed the books or games to understand what’s going on in the movies before. Why would that change now?

The only difference that I see is that the old EU was really its own animal, a book series that had long since left the SW movies behind rather than ancillary material designed to enhance a continuing SW movie series.

The big question in my mind is, of course, will any of it be any better than the hit-or-miss EU material from the past, and will the new movies be strong enough for the new EU books to be worth checking out.

i thought they said its all cannon from now , to me that means one big continuity., events in one effecting the other. if thats not the case , why bother doing it? i just want to be sure im not going to come out of a film wondering why “x” isnt in it only to be told that there was an argument in a cartoon that led to “x”s death in a video game .

  12. Seems strange that they would need or want to wipe out EU events set relatively soon after Return of the Jedi. They would in any case be long past in Episode 7, and it must be implied that our heroes have been doing SOMETHING between the trilogies.

Why not have their dialogue include some brief references to Thrawn or Vong, for instance? Those in the know will get the reference and “naive” audience members will still be left with the understanding that “a lot has been going on in the last 30 years”.

    1. That might be alright if it fits, but there are numerous ways it might not, depending on what they want to do with the new trilogy.

It could be that Endor popularized the rebellion to such an extent people everywhere rose up and even imperial supporters questioned their loyalty after finding out they were being ruled by a Dark Lord.

Maybe they’re going to say that the galaxy has been mostly peaceful so the new generation knows nothing of strife and war that will soon envelop them.

Maybe Leia and Han don’t stay together after the war a la Speed. Maybe Luke disappeared shortly after Endor and bones heard from him since. Any of these would invalidate even the earliest post-RotJ EU.
