UPDATE 6! Harrison Ford Broke His Ankle on the Star Wars: Episode 7 Set. He is Off for 8 Weeks?

star wars

Harrison Ford has been injured on the set of Star Wars. The actor injured his ankle on Thursday, and was taken to a local hospital…

From THR:

A statement from Disney reads:  “Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates.”

A source tells THR that the actor, who reprises his role as Han Solo from the original franchise, was injured by the door of the Millennium Falcon, the spacecraft that his character pilots in the original films, and looks to be making a return in the sequel.

It looks like the injury is really serious:

UPDATE!

A source close to the production tells The Hollywood Reporter Ford broke his ankle.

UPDATE 2!

From Deadline:

There are all kinds of reports circulating that make it sound like Harrison Ford got mashed in that trash compactor in the original Star Wars. It’s not as bad as what’s being reported, I’m told, but Ford has a fractured ankle. This is a painful break for him, and a tough break for the movie, because he’s such an integral part of the plot.

UPDATE 3!

Some more rumors about the injury from unconfirmed sources:

From Mirror:

A source on set said Ford, known around the world as Han Solo in the original Star Wars trilogy, collided with the metal door whilst he was performing a stunt for the sci-fi film.

The source added: “Harrison was hit by the door and looked in a bad way and was clutching his chest when he was on the stretcher.

“He is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and no chances were being taken so he got straight into a helicopter and was taken away in a lot of pain. His foot was damaged too.

“The cast and crew were sent home for the day, even though it was 5pm and the beginning of a night shoot.

“Harrison’s injury and what happened is going to mean changes to the schedule and problems and issues that need to be solved. But the main thing at the moment is making sure Harrison is OK.”

The actor was spotted shopping just hours before the incident:

The actor was taken by air ambulance to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford with a suspected fracture in his ankle. It is understood he has no major chest injuries but is awaiting results of further tests.

A spokesman for Thames Valley police said: “We were called just after 5pm to reports of a 71-year-old man being injured in an incident believed to involve a garage door.

A spokesman for Lucas Films has said the actor is in “good spirits” after his shocking accident on set.

UPDATE 4!

Access Hollywood spoke to Ford’s son, Ben Ford, who said that his dad will possibly need a plate and screws put into his ankle.

He also speculated that filming of the J.J. Abrams movie could be altered slightly, with the crew needing to shoot the actor from the waist up for a short time until he recovers.

UPDATE 5!

From SkyNews:

Harrison Ford has spent a second night in hospital after being injured while filming the news Star Wars movie at Pinewood Studios.

The actor broke his ankle and had to be airlifted to hospital in Oxford where he has been treated for his injury.

A publicist for the film told Sky News they were: “Hoping to announce some good news soon.”

Ford, 71, was reported to have been hurt when the door of the Millennium Falcon fell on him.

A spokesman for Ford’s wife, the Ally McBeal actress Calista Flockhart, told The Daily Telegraph she was flying out to the UK to be with her husband.

Disney spokesman Paul Roeder said filming would continue on schedule while Ford recovers.

UPDATE 6!

From THR:

Harrison Ford will miss as many as eight weeks of filming on Star Wars: Episode VII after the actor broke his ankle on set, a source close to the production has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ford was taken to a hospital after injuring his ankle on Thursday, but shooting will continue in his absence. THR’s source added that Episode VII is still expected to make its Dec. 18, 2015 release date.

8 weeks is a pretty normal period for this kind of injury. Let’s hope there’s nothing else as some gossip sites suggested.

It’s ok his recent acting looks pretty painful so there shouldn’t be much of a difference ooooh burn. But no seriously hope he’s ok. Imagine if he just flat out broke his back or something. May the force be with you Captain Solo.

Even if he did break his back, all would not be lost. This is the wonderful digital era. As long as his face muscles are working, they could digitally plaster his face onto a body double.

I imagine Disney would be quite capable of it, considering how much $ is at stake for them.

I hope they got it on film and leave it in the final movie like they did with Jango Fett bashing his head walking into the Slave I after fighting Obi-Wan in Episode II.

    • June 12, 2014 at 8:50 pm
      Permalink

That was intentional and probably CG, not an actor mistake. Given that Jango and the Clone Troopers are the precursor to the Stormtroopers, it was a reference/callback/homage to this scene from A New Hope:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBQaLuqwtl8
(Lucas added the “thunk” sound effect for the HD release, but you can see the head bump in the original version too)

    • June 12, 2014 at 8:52 pm
      Permalink

Actually, the Jango thing was a deliberate in-joke connected to a stormtrooper accidentally banging his head on the door to the Death Star control room in the original film. (The “Take over… see to him” scene.)

If has a foot fracture, how long could he be out?

    • June 12, 2014 at 10:14 pm
      Permalink

It really depends on what bones were broken and how severe the fracture is. Best case scenario if it was a foot and not an ankle he could be up and walking in a boot within a few weeks but a complete recovery from any fracture could take months. I’m sure they’ll restructure something where Harrison can film some of his less action oriented scenes first and save more involved things for after he’s healed… it’s not as if there’s a huge shortage of time till the release date. 😉

  • June 12, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Assuming its a fracture (and we are not sure it is yet it hasn’t been confirmed) he could be out up to six weeks at max.

I think Harrison Ford is a great actor, but he’s an old man, even a small fracture could have him out of action for a while. But I hardly think that any major changes will be made they’ll just reshuffle the shooting schedule to fit the other actors scenes, reaction shots and other continuity bits and bobs. They have till 2015 to do pickups, which most directors do, even Peter Jackson had LOTR actors come back a year or more to fill in bits for scenes and tie stuff in with the main principle shoots. JJ will manage or Disney will freeze him in carbonite.

Things could have been a lot worse I guess, imagine if it happened to someone less tough as him or it could have happened to Carrie Fisher instead of him???

Worse things have happened. Didn’t he get really ill during the filming of Temple of Doom and he had to be flown back home for a couple of months while Spielberg shot doubles and stuntmen? This kind of stuff happens.

GET WELLNESS. Everything happens for a reason. It is not fair but Harrison you are a war vet. Use it and let them take nothing away from THE SOLO. Show them that this “slammed your Leg in the Spaceship door” can never stop your greatest legacy performance. Walk it off and show your kids how tough the 70s were. Make it a part of Han. Like George said, he has not been cooking burgers.

Who says it’s fake? I’ve never seen this shot before. It’s clearly a shot from the interior set ramp, looking up at the back side of the airlock door (this is not the same ramp used on the outer shell Falcon prop, which would look dirtier).

Trust me it’s fake. Every time I tell you to trust me I’m 100 % sure. Like with the leaked TMZ photos – they were not leaked intentionally. Unfortunately I can’t tell you why.

Why would it be a secret? If you won’t tell me why then I can’t take what you said at face value. So what do you think this picture is showing then? It’s clearly not a computer render, clearly not some kind of future Disney attraction, too sharp to be a photo taken from the OT movies, and one can clearly see stage pipe fittings hanging down in lower left and right corners. Looks real to me…

I just think that Viral Hide is trying to make sure he doesn’t get anyone fired or breach any confidences with his sources. Given the ridiculous amount of secrecy surrounding the Episode VII production, I can certainly understand why he’d need to do that.

(We’re also talking about something that appeared in The Sun, which is a tabloid with a history of, shall we say, highly questionable veracity when it comes to content.)

    • June 15, 2014 at 4:23 pm
      Permalink

It’s your decision if to trust me. I’ve got a confirmation from a 100% credible source. And by the way it’s The Sun we’re talking about. And if you look the real Falcon ramp you’ll see that there’s nothing in common.

    • June 15, 2014 at 4:38 pm
      Permalink

There are two Falcon ramps. This is the one connected to the internal set pieces, which is only viewed on screen from the OTHER side (the inside of the Falcon looking out, when the airlock door opens or closes). Very little of this ramp makes it to movie screen, and probably not the walkable part at all. The second ramp (the one we usually see) is connected to the shell of the ship, dirtier, where the characters are filmed running up it. as far as “nothing in common” goes, take a look at Starkiller’s accurate walkthrough… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iintEBWVAX8#t=199

      Han’s action scenes?

Taking Ford’s age into consideration—and the fact that there’s plenty of young, athletic cast members—I’m pretty sure Han didn’t even have that many action scenes to begin with.

While you’re correct, anon #2, for someone with a fractured ankle, anything involving walking or (certainly) running becomes an action scene.

Many real action scenes would probably have a stunt double anyway, which isn’t a problem.

I’m sure there are plenty of scenes where he is required to move quickly and talk, I just don’t want to watch knowing they’ve changed things so much visually to suit the situation. Harrison is the fittest of the big 3, no doubt.

Yeah, it has spread to TMZ and such, but it originated on the scummy site you mention.

I’m curious what that door was supposed to be. A fan-made prop Falcon? The hydraulicy parts resemble the real thing, but most of the details are wrong, and the “door” part is hilarious looking.

    • June 16, 2014 at 3:34 pm
      Permalink

I don’t think you guys get it yet. The reason why the curved “door part” looks hilarious is because it is the BACK SIDE of the door you see coming down in this video… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inHf071BLx8 … It’s the UNFILMED side, therefore it is UNFINISHED looking (made of wood and what have you). Have you ever seen photos of the outsides of the interior Falcon hallway set and cockpit? LOTS of plywood involved. There is absolutely nothing unusual about this image, and it matches Starkiller’s Falcon walkthrough (link further above) perfectly. The bottom half of this ramp is unfinished for a reason – because it’s never on screen. The ONLY time you see this version of the ramp used is when they film on the INSIDE HALL looking OUT THE DOOR at just a smidgeon of the side upper ramp walls. Anything showing the bottom portion of ramp was filmed at the FALCON OUTER SHELL PROP, where the complete version of the ramp is constructed. Understand?… Viral, you may have a “source”, but I believe they are simply wrong, and until you can prove otherwise, I will continue to believe this is the real deal.

I’ve heard that he’ll get out of the hospital before his recovery actually finishes. I think the production team can pull an “Empire Strikes Back” and write the actor’s injury into the plot, like how Mark Hamil’s scars were made a part of the story. In any case, they can probably film some non-action scenes with him from the waist-up.

    • June 16, 2014 at 8:41 pm
      Permalink

They did that on “Northern Exposure”, too. The great Barry Corbin (you know him as the “Well why don’tcha just unplug the damned thing?” general from “WarGames”) broke his leg during shooting, so they wrote his character, Maurice Minnifield, having the same thing happen. But who’d buy that in VII? They can give Luke Skywalker a robot replacement hand, but they can’t fix Han Solo’s footsie? Uh-uh, that’s not gonna wash, I’m afraid.

    • June 16, 2014 at 11:18 pm
      Permalink

We don’t know enough about the production (or, to a lesser extent, the injury) to say much about its impact.

We have no idea how much of the film Ford will be in. It could be 10%, 50%, 80%. There are a ton of actors on board that we already know of, and there will likely be many scenes without Ford, either way. Production could remain quite active during his recovery, even if it slips slightly behind schedule.

If he’s in nearly every scene, obviously, it’s going to be more of a Temple of Doom scenerio where they’ll need rewrites or trickier filming, stunt doubles, etc, with reaction shots and close ups later. None of us want it to go down this way, but Temple turned out well.

I think we only need to worry *if* he has essentially the lead role *and* he is in a really bad state, still, a few months from now. Production delays are expensive, but Disney is investing so much into this, I think they’ll do whatever it takes to get the best movie.

I found this read about Harrison’s Temple-era recovery reassuring: http://www.theraider.net/films/todoom/making_4_instudio.php Sure, he’s older now, but no reason to think he’s not still a fighter.
