UPDATE 2! Rumor: Are These the New Star Wars: Episode 7 Stormtroopers? More Variants Possible.

Ralph Mc Quarrie Art Indie Revolver appears to have an exclusive first look at the Stormtroopers from Episode VII. Hit the jump to check them out… From IndieRevolver:

The sequel Stormtrooper helmet feels like a natural continuation from the original, but there are distinct differences. The helmet is not symmetrical – there’s only one breather/vent on the bottom near the mouth, on his left side. The black “mouth” area under the white nose plate appears to be a cloth/mesh (which you can better see in the detail shot below). The eye lenses are still separate, but set into a black frame to connect them and give the illusion of one single piece.

stormtrooper

A couple people have referred to this as a “Jungle Trooper,” but I have a few good reasons to believe that this is actually an update to the Empire Strikes Back’s Snowtrooper. This new helmet has a flared dome and a single thin horizontal eyepiece to it (as we first saw described at Making Star Wars) and appears to have a removable face mask.

stormtrooper Also IndieRevolver shared the following prop image from the RPF – a site dedicated to replicas of movie props and costumes:

Here are some interesting quotes from CBM spotted by MagnarTheGreat from the SHH Forums:

The first pic (actually the second in this article): they are 110% NOT called “Jungle Troopers”, They’re Incendiary Troopers(a new class) and carry flame-throwers. They’re used in a part of the film that takes place on a planet with huge forests covered in snow!

imdb Sorry dudes, can’t spill the beans yet, waaaaay to far from any official release, but trust me, from the things i’ve been told SW7 is in extremely good hands and a lot of the rumors thus far are KINDA close!

Finally freelance digital artist Juan Fernandez who is working in the comic book industry for companies like Marvel and DC, sent us this great looking concept art he did based on what we’ve seen so far. You can definitely see that there’s nothing in common with the sketch from a few days ago. We made a slight edit to the image based on the IndieRevolver’s description (only one vent near the mouth).

UPDATE 2!

Pomojema here with this update. So, you stayed tuned. Good call!   Anyway, the folks at Latino-Review have clarified some information about the Stormtroopers. Firstly, they confirmed that the Stormtrooper helmet with the wide, arched visor is in fact the “standard issue” helmet for the vast majority of Imperial soldiers. Secondly, the one that isn’t going to be called the “Jungletrooper” (with the thin visor) is actually not going to be for desert operations, but is in fact the brand new Snowtrooper model. L-R also supported the claim that guys are equipped with flamethrowers (kind of odd that the Snowtroopers that led the invasion of Hoth didn’t have these at all, come to think of it).

snowtroopers1 Third, they saved the best bit of information for last.

These aren’t the only variations on Troopers we’ll see. If you remember, we have been chasing rumors of a black and/or chrome Stormtrooper and I’m going to double down on one of those: There is a chrome Stormtrooper and s/he appears this way because that armor has the power to CLOAK. Invisible Trooper! Good for stalking. Much WOW!

This is, of course, referring to the Gwendoline Christie rumors from a few weeks back. Knowing that there could still be more varieties of Imperial soldiers to come is a very interesting possibility to entertain. Bear in mind, this is all from a gossip site that should be taken with a certain amount of Sodium Chloride, but nonetheless it’s good to hear more and more confirmation that yes, these are the new “faces” of the Empire’s army. Let’s just hope they’re better shots this time around.

I think they are simply put… badass. I was worried that you can’t tinker with something so iconic and yet… they did it beautifully. If these are indeed real of course.

Not sure I like the single breather on one side but it’s still a fine looking helmet. You can clearly see it’s a Stormtrooper at a glance yet it’s new.

Love it, love it. I bet the body armor is just as reminiscent while being more streamlined.

It’s funny the more it seems like the Empire is still a threat/power in the galaxy the more I like the idea. I had just considered them all but done but seeing them possibly back in action is quite awesome!

So the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 and yet, here we are 23+ years later and Russia is still trying to carry on the Soviet master plan of expansion/takeovers/communist ways. Just because the Berlin Wall fell and communism was dealt a blow, it never really went away. Russia became more free but the leaders never really changed. Think of the Empire like that and you will see that the Empire still being around makes sense. So you’re saying that Star Wars 7 could be an absolutely great movie but because those pesky Russians are trying to rebuild the Soviet Union, you automatically discredit the entire movie? Think about it.

Also, I wouldn’t compare the Empire to Iraq because we all know now that Iraq was never the threat to the US that the USSR was. The USSR was basically the anti-America of the world (being as equal in power as any country could have gotten to the US) and one the most dangerous countries in history.

            Right.

And obviously, imperial officers and stormtroopers—new or old—never saw themselves as the real bad guys in the galaxy, either.

part of me likes the idea of just adding them in, like empire added snow troopers with storm troopers and jedi added biker scouts with storm troopers. No replacement, just additional variants – but i guess they would have to look different enough to be worth adding in as additionals.

Then part of me thinks how much military uniforms change over 35 years. look to ww2 and now. Then again though, maybe their starwars 35 years are measured from a different planet, so maybe longer or shorter than 35 earth years… hard to tell how fast things changed a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

You have a good point there.

The PT designs seemed to draw from WWI era style elements.

The OT drew from WWII era style elements.

So it would make sense if the ST drew from 80s era style elements, and this stormtrooper helmet certainly has a late 80s style to it.

Ive been really happy with all I’ve heard and seen so far about these new films, but I have to say I’m not sure about this design at all… Feels one step too far removed from originals. I’ve quickly photoshopped what I think is a better look for the top image – filled in the black holes around mouth and given slight curves to nose and base. I think it looks more modern while still retaining the iconic look of the original stormtroopers.

Of course untill we see the designs as part of the finished film its difficult to sit in judgement.

OK, so blowing up one big space station and killing the last of the Sith wipes out the huge population of the rest of the Empire completely, right?

No. I have a feeling they will do this properly with a good explanation for what’s going on here.

Fingers crossed for Special Edition OT to be overruled.

      • August 15, 2014 at 4:22 pm

Yes, blowing up the Death Star should have destroyed the Empire completely for two reasons.

First, strictly in terms of the storytelling narrative, having the Empire continue to exist would completely undermine the climax of the Third Act of the OT, where the rebels defeat the Empire once and for all. Tacking on a “remnants of the Empire” scenario robs the current generation of a story that is uniquely their own. It also robs the audience of the “what happens next” factor.

Second, in terms of realism, it’s fairly difficult for an Empire to sustain itself when the Emperor has been done away with. Remember, the Empire exists solely because of Palpatine’s scheming and organizing, so without him at the helm, it’s like a ship without a captain. Additionally, the Emperor’s right hand man was dealt with as well, along with “an entire legion” of the Emperor’s “best troops” on Endor, and with it an astonishing number for officers both on the ground and in the Imperial Fleet. We know that in guerilla warfare, officers are often targeted because without their leadership the remaining troops often scatter because of lack of direction and loss of morale. Without the administrative leadership in place, it’s unlikely that the average Imperial trooper would stick around when there’s no administrative infrastructure to pay them.

Additionally in terms of resources and finances, the Empire suffered the loss of two Death Stars, which cannot be a cheap thing to produce. They also lost their flagship super star destroyer, many standard star destroyers, and ground equipment at the battle of Endor. This would present a massive loss of equipment that would be highly expensive to replace. Also keep in mind that the Death Stars allowed the Emperor to disband the Senate, as “fear would keep the regional governors in line.” This means that without a Death Star and the loss of their flagship super star destroyer, a fleet of standard star destroyers, and en entire legion of the Emperor’s “best troops,” that there wouldn’t be much of a n Imperial bureaucracy in place to do much of anything. “How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?”

News of this massive defeat would have likely spread like wildfire throughout the galaxy, and embolden other folks who sided with the rebels but were heretofore too afraid to join the fight, to now take up arms to wipe away any last remnants of the Empire.

        • August 15, 2014 at 4:49 pm
          Permalink

Despite the Empire losing the first Death Star in IV, it felt like they came back even stronger in V. This is a huge organization filled with loyal, capable leaders and soldiers. I don’t see them just going away simply because they took another major hit in VI.

          • August 15, 2014 at 5:00 pm
            Permalink

Loyalty lasts only as long as the paychecks keep flowing.

Keep in mind, that the Battle of Yavin didn’t involve the entire Imperial Fleet, the loss of their flagship Super Star Destroyer, the loss of “an entire legion” of the Emperor’s “best troops” on the ground, etc.

There might be some remnants for a short time, a situation where you have civil war with different factions of Imperial Officers who have become regional warlords. But again, that’s not the Empire, and it wouldn’t last for very long before an aggressor became the clear dominate power, and filled the power vacuum. Which again, wouldn’t be the Empire.

It certainly wouldn’t be ongoing for 35 years.

It’s also important to keep in mind narrative-wise, that Episode IV was only the First Act.

Only one thing I thought – not in desagree with your post and there’s nothing to do with EP VII… But I always had this feeling that the empire was not making one death star, but several. I mean, they spent 18 years to complete the first one as we see between epIII and EpIV… However, the second death star is almost finished in ROTJ… Again, I always had this feeling that, at least the second Death Star was already in progress when the first one destroyed Alderaan…

Not commenting on the quality of the footage, but more on the effect on the overall story. It always seemed far fetched to me that there would all of a sudden be widespread celebrations when the Empire had a vast military presence, especially on Coruscant. In any event, it certainly changed the overall narrative and implications for the saga going forward.

Again, GL trying to make a tidy little resolution despite the fact that there were treatments for more stories to be told.

Well, he at one time said he had treatments for 9-12, and he sold treatments to Disney, so I think it is fair to say they existed. But the point is, he didn’t think they would ever be made and changed the ROTJ story and added in the celebrations to try to tie everything up. As a result, I have little problem disregarding them as the ST begins…

I’m fine with these pictures, as the stormtroopers are the last thing I am worried about for Episode 7. As I have been saying, we can talk practical effects vs CGI, or real locations, etc, but the bottom line is if the audience doesn’t click with the new ST characters and the story isn’t interesting, then this trilogy will split the fanbase just like the PT.

Also…if you imagine that the “breather” is a little speaker, like in Darth Vader’s “voice changer” thingy…then it makes sense to just put on on there. If it’s projecting the trooper’s voice….he just needs one, and it would look monumentally stupid to have it centered.

The Empire still being in power or a major force in the galaxy would be pretty stupid especially 30 yrs later. The Empire was Palpatine without Palpatine or Vader in power it wouldn’t last 30 yrs especially with the Rebel alliance gaining support with the death of the emporer at end of ROTJ. My fear is this movie might capture the look and feel of the SW universe but that won’t matter if they don’t have a logical good plotline to back it up.

I hear what you’re saying, but if the movies turn out good then it won’t bother me as much as others.

The one thing about SW movies is if you look at them through a microscope, then it will ruin the experience.

I mean if we read spoilers in 1982 saying Leia was rumored to be Luke’s brothers, fans would have been going crazy. You can’t have 2 people who smooched in ESB now be siblings??? But it is what it is and we all love the OT despite stuff like that.

After 37 years of adoring the galaxy far far away Star Wars is in my very ‘Soul’ & therefore I have got to say – Simply – “Spot On”, these photos have got to be 100% genuine as the entire ‘feel’ of the original Stormtrooper helmet has been captured to absolute perfection. It is clearly a new iteration of Stormtrooper & yet instantaneously it has the essence of the original from the OT. The comments made about ‘motor cycle helmets & Tron’ are so wide of the mark to totally miss the obvious – this being that the very intrinsic quintessential spirit of the original Stormtrooper has been captured fully – that’s “FULLY”, whilst taking the design as with the storyline forward some 30 odd years. In contrast the Clonetrooper helmets & armour from the PT never got close to capturing the feel of the originals but this unquestionably “nails it”. Of course there is another reason why Episode 7’s Stormtroopers will bring us back to the original trilogy – REAL COSTUMES! For the Clonetroopers in the PT they never made a single trooper costume, they where entirely CGI – another reason why the PT fell short of expectations – the over saturation of CGI made the scenes containing the Clonetroopers & their battle sequences look like an animated film. First the exquisite new X-Wing Fighter & now the amazing New Stormtrooper helmet – JJ Abrams & the entire E7 crew are going to “knock it out of the park”. Star Wars is without doubt retuning to its core & I could not be more happy. Simply Superlative

Once again I say it’s so funny the people that got upset AFTER the fact when they learned that no “real” suits were made for the Clonetroopers. They were offended that they couldn’t tell the difference between a CG suit and a real one. Despite their assertion they can tell the difference. They can’t.

Instead of being amazed and appreciative of the achievement and the stunning battle scenes all they can go on about is “Oh it look’s animated” I got news for you Star Wars IS animation it always has been and always will be. It’s not real so the scenes have to be created. The only difference is the live action and animation combining that the OT could do was limited by analog film techniques while digital techniques allow full integration of all the elements.

I’ll take the Clones attack on Geonosis 100 times out of 100 compared to the Stormtroopers in the forest.

“They were offended that they couldn’t tell the difference between a CG suit and a real one.”

I could tell the difference right away. The scene when Padme falls off the drop ship in episode II… right after that a trooper helps her out. The trooper looks so fake and stiff I’m shocked they didn’t re-shoot the scene. Another telltale sign was the fake looking reflections on the troop’s visors at the end of the film… ugh.

I’m sorry to inform you fake-CG-er but we have multiple confirmations now that they are using real sets, real actors, and storm troopers on set. Thank god.

Well, if this is the real deal, then I guess they’re not chrome.

They’re good designs, but honestly, if they’re still fighting the Empire 35 years after the Battle of Endor, it will be very disappointing, and boring. Old hat and all that.

I would have hoped that each trilogy would have its own unique conflict, and bring something new to the table.

Even if this is real, I don’t think it confirms the presence of the Empire necessarily.

Remember, the Clone Troopers were the predecessors to the Stormtroopers, and they appeared in 2 movies before the Empire was established.

These new troopers could simply be armies that utilize the same trooper armor technology and are deployed by whatever faction(s) now hold power oever the galaxy, be it the Empire or something else entirely.

Very interesting designs… Part of me is leaning towards the notion that the storm trooper helmet has the smooth, slick style of a 2015 lambo; which kinda goes against the statement that this movie would return to the gritty side of Star Wars, but I don’t necessarily dislike the new look. It could be much worse. Perhaps the grittiness will be more epitomized in the rebel forces like the OT. Although I’ll always prefer the original trilogy design, I’m looking forward to seeing these new troops in action.

I remember that the first Hobbit: Unexpected Journey stills came out around October of 2011, and the film came out on December 2012. With a comparable level of anticipation, Star Wars might have the first stills released in October as well! (Aand the first Hobbit trailer came out in December 2011. I really hope that the producers follow a similar strategy as the Hobbit!)

IMO, the snow trooper doesn’t look half as menacing as they did in ESB.

  • August 15, 2014 at 6:34 pm
    Permalink

I think they look really good, especially the “flame trooper” helmet that was obviously adapted from McQuarrie’s original concept for the snowtroopers in ESB.

The only thing I’m not buying is that the regular trooper helmet is actually asymmetrical with a circular vent at only one end of the tube that wraps around the base of the helmet. The overall helmet design hasn’t been changed anywhere near enough to justify that from a “functional” standpoint, and as iconic as the stormtrooper helmet has always been, a change like that is just going to be distracting as hell to the audience.

Yes, the photo of the replica version doesn’t show a vent on the right side, but do we know that the replica has one on the left?

I’d be interested to see one of these new trooper helmets from the front so we can tell for sure whether they are actually asymmetrical or not.

I like the stormy helmet a lot. It feels solid and heavy. As for the “incendiary trooper/snowtrooper” the image seems unfinished. It is clearly CG, and either fan art or early concept from the film. If it is legit at all, I would expect the final version to be more fleshed out. Now I feel like we are entering real spoiler territory but I dont trust myself to stop looking! lol

I confess I needed a little time to get used to the mask, but it’s beautiful indeed. And, as said, it makes a lot of sense. Since Ep II in the first appearance of these armors, they evolved. If the stormtroopers in EpVII were the same as seen in the OT, it would be a pathetical and non-sense attempt to make only a revival or something like this.

I absolutely LOVE the new updated Storm Trooper helmets. My concern ironically has nothing to do with the stormtroopers, but more with the statement that was made about “Most” of the rumors being true so far. I’m hoping that doesn’t include the rumor of Luke’s hand floating in space and such. Not only is it highly unlikely that his hand would make it to Tatooine or wherever they’re claiming it ends up, it just sounds like a bad fanfiction. Otherwise I love the practical effects of the New Trilogy so far and am so hyped for it!

The stormtroopers helmet is amazing. It is derivitive in all the ways it needs to be, and is expounded upon in new ways that make it more timely. This screams of quality and well considered design. It is simple yet dramatic. I can’t stop coming back to look at it, which shows that it’s definitely leaving an impact.

I must say, really nice design work! Wow! As many have stated, I as well do see this as an evolution of the stormtrooper helmet moving from the OT to the ST. A few things of note in the progression of the helmet (and some additional comments on do we really expect updated Imperial Stormtroopers in the ST?):

    – Large smooth white armor surfaces on the helmet gives the more “sleek” look or “modern” some might say (reduction of # of surfaces, large smooth surfaces, etc gives a more futuristic look for sure). very cool!
    – More black surface area on the front of the helmet makes sense moving into the ST because the PT visors/black were slim to none (less visor/black) , and that OT had more black areas w/ the large eyes, etc (moderate visor/black) on the front surface of the helmet, now the ST helmet appears to have even more black surface area on the front (more visor/black). I do like how they achieved “more black” with an under-shell that isn’t actually a part of the functional visor. Really neat design trick! I like it!
    – The ST design is more menacing than the OT which is more menacing than the PT (most PT variants that is). So it seems that the main villains will have a step up in their “menacing look” as well? Can’t wait!

However, I must way that these ST trooper helmets do remind me a bit of the Republic Commando helmets from the PT. A bit slimmer on the sides and less bulbous at the bottom (as opposed to the OT trooper). So I do also buy that these could be specialist/commando (heavy weapon, etc) variants of the stormtrooper. To be a concept artist attached to these movies! Must be a dream come true for many of the artists and designers! Can’t wait to see all the new ST designs as we get closest to release! 🙂

I do also agree with others that have stated that they are wondering why the Empire is still around, and their stormtroopers for that matter. I am not sure. It may be simply because Luke, Han and Leia are still around. Again, not sure. But it would seem logical that we would get something NEW (for bad guy troopers) as opposed to just updated or “modernized” stormtroopers.

The PT had clone troopers, the OT had stormtroopers, and the ST has ???troopers … Sith/Mando troopers anyone!? Not sure that I buy an updated stormtrooper as THE NEW TROOPER for the ST! But in all honesty did JJ really do anything new for the Star Trek reboot/revival? I mean it was a reboot for sure but primarily it was ( 1 ) a visual upgrade with the latest tech, ( 2 ) increased production value, with ( 3 ) old villains (re-imagined), ( 4 ) a younger cast, and ( 5 ) some fan service with the original cast. Sound familiar? To me it sounds a lot like what we may get for Ep 7. Only time will tell I guess.

Will be very interesting to see if the ST has its own trilogy based trooper in both name and design or if the updated “modernized” stormtrooper is the ST trooper of choice.

    Just my 2 credits.

30 years after the destruction of the 2nd death star and the death of vader and the emperor, the republic is still not reformed because of the fight against remnants of the empire, admirals, generals and other high ranking imperials all grabbing as much power as they could, each claiming to be the new emperor.(this is where they will add the scene where characters name some of the warlords and they will throw in thrawn just to get a theatre wide fanboy screams) Luke tired from the fight, the loss of his wife and the strained relationship with his son (gleeson) has gone into seclusion. Han and leia tried to make their relationship work especially for their daughter ( ridley) but couldn’t, have not spoken to each other in years. A young reluctant stormtrooper (boyega) see something he shouldn’t plans of his ruler or commanding officers to resurrect a powerful sith or even the emperor himself. With help of han, his daughter and chewie they must find Luke and stop the evil from being awakened. Chased by and eventually becoming friends with a bounty hunter (isaac) who is every bit as cocky as han is which is why his daughter can’t help but fall in love with him (shocking twist the bounty hunter is actually boba fett’s son)

I’m sure there’s probably a way of changing things like that (even though I don’t know how) but if not it seems it was taken at Pinewood Studios.
