Gary Whitta Shares First Star Wars Spin-Off Script Picture. Plus Daisy Ridley Gets A New Agent.

New Lead

The Star Wars: Episode VII production has wound down into a scheduled two week hiatus to give Harrison Ford a little more time to recover. But that doesn’t mean that the presses stop here in the Star Wars Blogosphere or that there is no news from the galaxy far, far away, so catch-up on some tid-bits from around said galaxy after the jump . . .

First up, we have a Deadline report declaring that Daisy Ridley has signed-on with UTA, United Talent Agency, as her American agency. Apparently she was in hot demand among Hollywood talent agencies and why wouldn’t she be? She has the kind of beautiful, fresh face that Hollywood drools over, not to mention that pretty much every actor to appear in any of the Star Wars Episodes and Spinoffs is bound to become a hot property. Curiously though the same article states the following:

the plan is for her carry through to the second and third films that will be directed by Looper helmer Rian Johnson.

Fresh New Faces

The curious part of this equation is that it was widely presumed, at least by this Blogger, that Daisy was cast because she is going to be one of the leads throughout the Sequel Trilogy. The same presumption was made with Domhnall Gleeson as well, with the thought that Disney/LFL took their time with casting in order to make sure it is perfectly correct for the long haul, vis-a-vis The Sequel Trilogy and perhaps movies beyond Episode IX. Oscar Isaac and John Boyega may not be in for all three episodes, but Ridley, suspected to be Han and Leia’s daughter, and Gleeson, suspected to be son of Skywalker, were expected to be signed-on for the duration.

The next bit of news on the plate relates to the first spinoff, presumed to be Boba Fett, with its writer, Gary Whitta, recently sharing a cool pic on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152223368111016&set=a.10150299829081016.334115.679476015&type=1

It’s surprising to see that Whitta has just now begun the script when he was announced as writer back on May 23rd. Did he really write that or is that just a generic page the writers are supplied with? As a writer, albeit a Blogger, I find it a little amazing that Whitta was able to exercise that kind of restraint in waiting so long to write anything. Perhaps Guardians of the Galaxy affected him more than he let on, left him with a sever case of “Writer’s Block.” Get crackin’, Gary, December 2016 isn’t that far away. LOL At any rate, it is this kind of scrutiny of minutia that gives us Star Wars geeks our reputation.

Next up we have this Tweet that’s sure to raise some eyebrows as well as some questions among Star Wars fans:

With all the rumors swirling about Simon Pegg possibly having some involvement in Episode VII, it will surely fuel the fire to see Pegg and Whitta together. Perhaps Pegg is playing a role in the first spinoff as well and is giving him some inside scoop?! LOL Not likely.

Gary Whitta

We think Whitta follower Darick Robertson made a pretty cool adjustment to the picture! Seriously, though, Gary, stop messing around with Simon Pegg and start writing already!!!

Finally, we have to mention that the Evil Empire has begun a propaganda campaign against the Rebel Alliance. Citizens of the galaxy are encouraged to review the following info-vids on the HOLONET NEWS. Citizens not reviewing said vids may be subject to discipline up to and including being sent-away to Imperial re-indoctrination compounds. But seriously, check out this cool website promoting Disney’s new animated show Star Wars: Rebels!

I wonder why they can’t divulge at least one detail about the film or it’s content? Does it have something to do with a surprise that’s exclusive to Episode VII?

I’m sure a lot of people have inside knowledge on the story but don’t know how much truth there is to it so are keeping it to themselves. If Lucasfilm announce something that happens to be what somebody has heard, then it will create a ripple effect to confirm the other things they have heard. Releasing even a character name will open up a huge can of worms.

More like torture (haha). Would love to see a few more tidbits, the x wing wasn’t enough for me! It would be really cool if they could get a few official onset pics that wouldn’t reveal too much of the plot… but I guess given that all the actors must wear the full cover robes when walking from trailer to set then I guess we won’t be seeing anything like that anytime soon :/ All I want is a still from the movie, if even that… just an official bad robot pic of Luke holding a light saber. I mean, like, we all know he’s a jedi…. right? (haha)

How about a photo of Luke in costume? It’s not like someone can extract major plot details just by looking at him in a Jedi robe or whatever. I just want something! I need my fix!

I think we’ve seen him in costume – that scraggly beard he’s grown suggests to me someone who’s living an isolated/hermit lifestyle, and that further suggests a ‘missing Luke/search for a missing Luke’ scenario.

why is there an assumption that Ria will direct the third as well? I hope this is not the case,as it seems like quite a lot of responsibility to give this director when he hasn’t even shown what he can do with the second one. What if it is disspointing? Looper wasn’t stellar.

I don’t think he will. I feel like they’ll want a new director or each film just to keep in line the original trilogy. I just hope this doesn’t turn into too much of a nostalgia fest like Superman Returns

I doubt he’d even have enough time to do them back-to-back because of Disney’s tight release schedule.

Unless he filmed them back-to-back. That might be able to work. Maybe IX will get a different director; maybe it’ll have Rian to a two-parter.

I want Boyega and Ridley to be the two main leads; certainly not Gleeson and Ridley. I’d put my money on Issacs being around for all 3 sequel films as well, only if the rumors are true about him winning the Falcon from Solo. That is so badass, he must be a survivor. But of the new cast, I’d bet on Von Sydow or Gwendoline Christie’s character dying first. Anyone else wanna take bets?

I actually think Domhnall is far more suited to playing the lead. John is a rather serious performer and has a lot inner strength and intelligence about him as opposed to naivety or a fish-out-of-water quality. To be honest I think he is far more suited to playing a villain. Dohmnall on the other has a huge heart and innocence about him which I think is far more suited for a coming of age story like star wars. But of course they are still actors, I just struggle to see John play a naive innocent kid. Especially anywhere near as good as Domhnall can. Harry Potter, Frodo, Luke Skywalker, I loved that they are just innocent relateable kids that go onto greatness. Domhnall could smash a lead role far better than John in my opinion. The horrid rumours about how John’s character will supposedly start off as a baddie/stormtrooper doesn’t help things either in terms of a innocent relatable lead.

I agree with you that Gleeson “could” play a coming of age story more naturally than Boyega, because of Boyega’s stronger look. However, I’m assuming we’d only get one true coming of age story in this film, Ridley’s character. Luke had a coming of age story in the OT, not Leia. She very much already knew who she was (not literally obviously but as a person) and what she wanted to do in life. I doubt we’ll see two characters go through that concurrently, and I personally hope we don’t. I feel as if Boyega could be the Han to Ridley’s Luke and Gleeson would be Leia. Or I could be completely off lmfao. Issacs is definitely a Han type character too. Lets just hope for original characters that aren’t archetypes of the OT characters.

I foresee a scene where Han is killed and Ridley’s character (his daughter) faces a severe test as her grief and anger and thirst for revenge draw her towards the dark side of the Force. Luke could be there to “talk her down” and stop her from going into the dark.

This may not happen in the first sequel movie, though. I would rather make Ep 8 the really dark one, “corresponding” to the dark middle movie of the OT.

Even if you never read a single rumor, I would think that most people would guess that this is the last Star Wars movie for the big three. It makes me kind of sad just writing that statement.

IMO, best odds go to Ford, since he has asked Lucas to kill off his character before. The next likely is Hamill, who will continue his character “on another plane of existence”. Last I would pick Leia, (just because it kind of parallels Amidala) from grieving over Solo, and/or her child turning to the dark side.

If Disney has plans to possibly do X-XII that takes place within a few years of IX on the timeline, I wouldn’t be surprised to at least see Luke and Leia return as Force ghosts. I can even see them continuing in X without dying in the ST.

My larger point is this: We may get a situation where some of the younger cast get more than one trilogy to shine before passing the torch in their elder years. What if the original cast could’ve done another trilogy in the 90s?

There are too many variables to consider how different the sequels would be if they were made in the 90’s as opposed to now. I would like to hear other opinions on that one. I do think that the sequels were always intended to come out around this time frame, even though Lucas previously said that there were only going to be six episodes. There are so many discrepancies between the early interviews & conversations he had in the early 80’s to the ones in his latter career.

Personally, I am more interested in seeing if Lucas introduces Jedi artifacts in these new films. The Journal of the Whills, Khybur crystal, and Force cube all seem like intriguing ideas that I would like to see.

I find it strange that Domhnall and Daisy are expected to be more likely to last longer in the series than Oscar and Boyega simply based on the assumption that they’re Skywalker/Solo offspring.

I think both groups should be equally likely to stay or go. I want them all to last as long as possible, but I don’t want any potential offspring characters to receive special treatment.

That’s simply an assumption, as you’ve said yourself.

Nothing is etched in stone at this point, so I wouldn’t worry too much about assumptions based on the fact that Gleeson is a redhead, only ’cause some folk still cling on to the idea that Luke was actually married to a redhead at some point.

Personally, I find the rumors claiming that Luke will be a sort of lonely hermit (a la Obi-Wan) much more credible. They make a helluva lot more sense, based on the character’s makeup the last time that we saw him (kindling his father’s funeral pyre all alone, being the last one to arrive at the Ewok celebration, etc.).

Agreed, audiences need to react to these characters first before they lock in who dies and who doesn’t in the future films. I’m not convinced at all on Ridley’s charisma to lead a movie. She could easily be the weakest link, I hope not though.

I’m very curious about how the sequel trilogy era will be used in the EU. I was really hoping that Rebels was going to be set in the era between eps 6 and 7, prior to plot details about rebels being released. I’d guess that we’ll eventually get some animated tv show set between 6 and 7 around the time of 9 being released. That show, hypothetically, would keep us busy until the eventual episode 10. Animated adventures of Luke, Han, and Leia right after Jedi ends? That’d be amazing. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll get an animated Mara Jade.

Plus a lot of what made Fett cool in my opinion has been watered down. Since the CW is canon now… all those events with younger Fett are true. All of his mystery and badassery have dissolved IMO. His armor shall remain awesome though…

Again that’s just my feelings. I’m sure a lot of folks still love him and heck maybe even a movie about him can reestablish his awesomeness.

Either way I agree I’d like the spin-offs to be a bit more original. It’s a rich universe no need to keep circling the same families.

A Boba Fett movie would be the chance to develop the anti-hero meme in a Star Wars context. The protagonist is not a “role model”, but he gets things done. He is a survivor in a tough world, and the people he deals with are often worse than he is — making the audience side with the anti-hero after all.

Anakin never hid his strong feelings for Padme from Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan did not chastise him (“Remember you are a Jedi and can never sleep with her!”)

I guess Obi-Wan saw this as a somewhat silly crush on Anakin’s part, but he did not try to discourage it. So what if Anakin actually managed to bed Padme? Clearly there are no indications that this would somehow be a disaster — again confirming that the Jedi aren’t required to be strictly celibate. The occasional one night stand is quite acceptable.

It was only the marriage, the forming of a permanent attachment, that had to be kept hidden from the Order.

Lucas got confused within his own continuity.
He could not make up his mind or stay on track. Just like the Jedi vs tatooine wardrobe.
Look how Uncle Owen and Obi wan dress alike.
Some Eu even portrayed the two as brothers.
Yet in production for episode One Lucas said he was stuck between having Jedi look like Luke in Ep6 or to dress as Obi wan.
I see it as if Lucas painted himself in a corner. As his process of working, is that the back story develops as the episodes evolve.
So as new things were introduced and not considered against the future stories (The Prequels) that he wanted to tell.
He should have wrote word for word the back story. However Lucas could not do that, because he could hardly organize his own original script that he split into thirds. As if the story he was developing grew faster than he could muster. I feel this is what happened with the original concept such as a Jedi’s celibacy of PT then in early 80’s vs what he decided to write in the late 90s. The man changed and so did his vision. Did he see the Jedi’s more as Samurai or midevil knights.
But with Lucas he left a lot to interpretation. Perhaps Jedi did intermingle.
But what also comes to mind is that there maybe some other message within and perhaps auto biographical as well.
George Lucas never had a naturally conceived child. He has three adopted children and one biological child through artificial insemination.
When he wrote episode one he was not married, many say he based Luke on his early years as a rebel/fog city maverick.
And it was Vader he modeled on himself as he built his empire and Forced out or Choked out his first wife.
I really hope the story group has a good hold of their development this time around

No, the profoundly stupid things are the comments made by folk who haven’t got the slightest idea of what an order of warrior-monks was all about.

They existed in real life, you know? A little research on Shaolin monks or Knights Templar on Google would go a long way in fighting the true profound stupidity about this particular subject.

        • August 9, 2014 at 1:18 am

Well, here we go… Luke clearly went against the “no attachment” philosophy of the “Jedi-Monks” that preceded him, and as a result he was able to save his friends, sister, and ultimate redeem his evil father, something no other “Jedi-Monk” could do. Accordingly, it makes absolutely no sense that Luke must be hamstrung by the outdated and incorrect philosophy of some prior Order of Monks. Especially when he was never, ever told of this supposed Jedi celibacy mandate.

I know quite well the history of Shaolin monks and the Knights Templar, neither of which fit in with the actual story of the OT.

Again, just stupid to assume Luke cannot have any children or other attachments considering the way the story played out in the OT.

First off, all your statements above are based on your very own and personal understanding of the SW saga. None of it is based on actual facts. And as it happens, my opinion is just as valid as yours. And it couldn’t be more different if I tried.

IDK where you get the idea that I’m suggesting Luke “cannot” have children. I never said that. I just have a very hard time picturing him as an Average Joe, with a wife, a couple of kids, a couple of speeders and a picket fence outside his home, lol.

Luke is the typical archetype of the lonely hero who chooses the spiritual over the mundane. That’s why it wouldn’t make any sense for him to have children in the ST.

It doesn’t mean he can’t have them, and more than likely, 99% of the folk who hate the PT Jedi because of their Code want him to have children. Doesn’t mean you all are right, though.

It’s probably bollocks anyway… That’s preamble to an opening crawl, and although I’m just guessing I doubt they will start spin offs in the same way – as chances are they are not “chapters” or “episodes” as such. This is ust something to fill in the two week break.

I disagree. The crawl has been in everything Star Wars related. Video games, the Holiday Special, the PT.

You have a point there mate… Although, for me, it never quite works because they are smaller less epic stories. That said my wishful thinking won’t stop it. Also like the fact you mentioned PT in the same breath as the holiday special!

Since the spinoffs take place in the same GFFA, there remains the need to suspend the disbelief and feelings of the audience to that place when introducing the story so starting with “A long time ago….” fallowed by the crawl does that. They might change the color though from the blue incipit and yellow crawl to something else though like they did with The Clone Wars occasionally.

The chic looks weird, I see no charisma in her, nothing special, by the way I don’t want a black guy in the lead, it doesn’t feel right in Star Wars. Only in a very little supporting role to die off early. The way to go is with Domhnall Gleeson.

Because he’s a truly brilliant filmmaker (watch Brick) and also a great writer, a true artist imo. Unlike JJ who is only good at copying and pandering to the audience. I expect JJ will be back for 9 to be the ‘mastermind’ behind this trilogy, but I really hope that it will be Johnson who’s got that honor in the end.

Times have changed. Younger audiences won’t care about miscegenation unless they’ve been taught to, by a backwards older generation. Besides, some of the audience themselves (like my own children for example) will be the product of miscegenation, as you so impolitely put it. And X- rating? Not unless they film the actual conception!

P.s. George Lucas himself is married to an African-American woman.

Tiniest fringe? Halle Berry, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Rock Johnson and Barack Obama, among many other famous people are mixed race, The fringe is getting closer than you realize. Again, younger audiences won’t care unless their backwards parents teach them to be. Get out of the backwoods and onto Main Street, and see for yourself. Disney doesn’t shy away from social issues, so they might just decide it’s time to bring this one up.

No its called low sperm count or his first wife had issues. His new wife is forty four so that’s an issue as well. Until you know facts, keep your comments down dipshit. No one here knows why Lucas has never had biological children till now or the true reason for the past.
It could simply be a personal one. Spielberg has adopted and has biological children.

After Guardians of the Galaxy came out, Gary Whitta tweeted how that movie just made his job a lot harder.

My guess he is writing the Han Solo spinoff, since Star Lord is basically Han Solo and Chris Pratt nailed the role. Now Whitta has to cook up something just as good or better.

Is there any possible way to ban a poster for being a troll? He is doing this same stuff on every article, and always veers off topic. Or at least, give a person warnings for being off topic, and enforce some type of consequence for it. Many other websites do this, and it really helps to keep the trolls in check.

about Tim Snow – I think it’s just his oppinion, why is everyhting called so fast racist in the states. He dislike the casting, if Boyega is the main lead, he gave some good points. I share some of his oppinion, I’am a racist too? By the way who has the right to label a Person a racist?

Because the only point he keeps giving is he doesn’t want Boyega to star because he is black. If Boyega was white, it would not be an issue. That is a textbook example of racism.

For the record, after reading some of these comments, I hope Boyega nails this role and “owns this movie,” just as previous rumors have said.

Although I will be the first to promote free expression of ideas, everyone in America needs an education on “Freedom of Speech.” First, the concept did not originate in the US, like so many people believe. Also, it is not some absolute right. The only thing the First Amendment provides is that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech… in other words, it is only the government who cannot restrict free speech, and even then it is subject to reasonable limitations as to time, place and manner.

There is absolutely nothing prohibiting others from restricting your speech, whether it be your employer or the owner of a website like this.

Anyway, I have already indicated in other boards here that I disagree with the banning of users or deletion of comments on these boards because free expression of ideas should ultimately lead to greater understanding and education. But Americans, like me, need to recognize the legal limitations on supposed “free speech” and quit pretending like we are the only ones on earth that have it.

I’d believe you if you would have just said… I don’t think Boyega can act. Yet you felt it was absolutely necessary to state it’s because he’s black. As you’ve said in other comments “to black”.

That’s where your credibility goes out the window.

There is so much general discussion here (and that’s fine). It’s just that there are so many points in the actual article above that get no discussion.
Take for instance the implication that nothing was written yet but “A long time ago…” When I saw those words with the tweet, my interpretation was that he just FINISHED the script, closed it up (so to speak), and snapped the pic. Saying “writing that…” I took to mean, the script, not the words.

I like that interpretation, and I think it’s much more likely that he just finished the script (or at least a rough draft) over the idea that he just now started the script. Disney’s on a tight schedule as far as pumping out new Star Wars movies is concerned, so Whitta’s script should probably be done with at this point.
