UPDATE 2! New Leaked Concept Art of a Possible Episode VII Villain?

star-wars

It appears that a new concept art with one of the Episode VII’s villains has been leaked on the web…

Head over to the Cantina boards HERE if you want to see, what appears to be a newly leaked concept art from Episode VII.

(via StarWarsUnderworld)

Beware, the image might be considered spoilerific if legit.

Actually when I saw this my first thoughts were it’s fake. But later after further examination and the words from one of our sources, I’m not so convinced. So take it as you like. 🙂

UPDATE!

The guys from IndieRevolver had a really intriguing update on the story:

Star Wars Underworld has posted a new image that was anonymously posted to an imageshack account purporting to be a piece of concept art from Episode VII of a villain holding a very strange looking lightsaber. I respect their hesitation to claim any authenticity related to the image – it’s nice to see some restraint with Star Wars news on the internet.

However, I can confirm that not only is this legitimate production art but that this particular concept made its way through pre-production and into the film. This character and his lightbroadsword have filmed scenes in England.

UPDATE 2!

And some thoughts from MakingStarWars:

The mask on what I have seen differs from the Star Wars Underworld mask. The mark is more like a crusader night. Just a shiny red metallic mask with a single visor straight across the front. Basically the red mask is like a helmet with a faceplate and visor that is a thin black line. His lightsaber is red, not orange like some depictions we have seen of bad guys in the past. He looks like Darth Revan mixed with the Emperor’s Royal Guards from the previous six Star Wars films.

For the full piece check their site. I just wanted to mention that I still stand behind the words of one of our sources that no major characters in Episode VII will be a cyborg or have any metal parts…

without the side hilt saber thingys it could look cool. Kind of looks like a medieval sword (cross) or like something linked to LOTR. But it would be better as a three prong Sai saber.

I’m so glad everyone’s on the same page about that hilt. The Excalibur look really wouldn’t do well with light sabers.

What if the hilt was made completely out of metal? Would that help any?

      • October 28, 2014 at 10:17 pm
        Permalink

That’d be a little better, but it would still just be another Sith that has to have some kind of out-of-the-ordinary light saber to give them an “edge,’ which just leads us to believe that the character must be pretty uninteresting; like Maul, the Inquisitor, Ventress and Dooku (all opinionated of course).

If this is true, it’s a step in the opposite direction from where I personally thought this project was headed. To me, a light saber is more reminiscent of a wise samurai’s katana rather than a noble knight’s broadsword. It just seems a lot more elegant and balanced in that context. Just think about an armored knight going up against a swift, agile samurai. Doesn’t seem like the knight would have much of a chance in that scenario with a bulky weapon.

A design like this cross hilt takes so much out of the unique ambiance in the SWU, forcefully cramming it into a framework of fantasy. The Clone Wars series did the exact same thing by manipulating the idea of the Force into a childish, “harry potter” type of mysticism rather than portraying it as an existential balance of energy that branches out into every living thing and keeps the universe in motion as is explained by Yoda and Ben in the OT.

Lol, it is an interesting concept for a light saber though. I mean it does protect the hands. I just get the “fake” feeling cause it’s so bizarre from what we’ve seen before. And the fact that the guy looks like a homemade Revan costume.

        • October 29, 2014 at 3:23 am
          Permalink

It doesn’t protect the hands at all. It limits the movement of the saber itself. If the user were to attempt to twirl the blade at all, he/she would slice his/her own hands clean off. Stupid design, and hope it’s fake.

  • October 28, 2014 at 6:47 pm
    Permalink

For concept art it looks a bit to produced. I mean concepts are usually drawn, this looks like a photo and it’s been photoshopped. Why would you go through the trouble to “light” a light saber for concept art that is never meant to be seen outside the studio or to get director approval as a direction to go?

  • October 28, 2014 at 7:20 pm
    Permalink

Like the post said, it looks like Revan but with one of the stupidest lightsabers I’ve seen to date. I sure hope that’s fan made because this doesn’t match up with any of the previous ideas of the villain we’ve seen, and that lightsaber *shudder* is so bad.

Well, if this is legit, Ep. VII is headed in a direction that might make the PT look like Academy Award winning films.

Terrible concept: unimaginative, unoriginal, not scary or interesting at all. Just one more darksider trying to be the top dog in the galaxy that inspires a “meh, been there, done that” feeling, if anything.

I actually like the lightsaber hilt. If they’re using a villain from the past, aka ancient fear, it makes sense to use a lightsaber that looks like an older model. Plus it reenforces the concept of the Jedi as knights (Dark or otherwise). The Sith does look a lot like Revan though. If that won’t be the identity of the villain, I feel like that would be confusing to the older fans, using a similar appearance. If it does turn out to be a female Sith, that’d be badass. But if it’s a slim male, Adam Driver would fit the bill. Or possibly Gleeson.

Looks totally awesome. One of the coolest images yet from this film. Very understated. Very Star Wars in feel without being redundant to anything in the actual films. I’m guessing it’s only the angle that gives it the Max Rebo muzzle illusion. I’ll bet it’s actually shaped more like the Quiet Riot mask.

I’m totally shocked that most of you don’t seem to love this at first sight. I’m a VERY hard sell when it comes to Star Wars (the opposite of a brand loyalist) and I like the fire-like rough edges of this antique light Saber’s glow. I like the rough fur-like texture of the cape and I love the overall simplicity of the mask (after seeing so many lame EU sith designs with mechanical chicken legs mechanical nose clamps or other arbitrary flourishes I’m pleasantly surprised that Hollywood is capable of this kind of simplicity. It’s very Germanic like Max Von Sidow’s knight from the Seventh Seal. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Gwen’s character.

Didn’t like it at first. I like it the more I’ve read about it though from; this site, MSW, and force.net. If this “Sith Collector” has found the sword, it gives the ancient/strange look. Something we haven’t seen before and possibly forgotten in SW universe. We only know back to PM and that was only a lifetime away(anything before no longer exists)in this story. It’s very possible that this thing could be an ancient Sith saber? possibly one of first lightsabers? I’m just spit balling here though. My point is that this thing may SUPPOSED to be bizarre looking. It’s something new, strange, and different…which is exactly what I want in a villain for EP VII.

    main villian? NO WAY.
    Henchman(men)? Just Maybe
seeing that in a dark room would look better,
a real sith would NOT use a lightsaber that could knock your hand off if you lose your grip, or turn it the wrong way, or do ANYTHING with it. I mean com’on, the cross-bars could be cool, but not when you design it like THAT.
But as mentioned before, perhaps this is SUPPOSED to look bizarre or downright ridiculous.
Kinda has that wannabe Sithlord look doesn’t it.
This is someone who would scare the newcomers, the newcomers ask luke for help.
Luke takes one look at this guy and rolls his eyes, gets this guy in blade-lock, pushes the ill-placed cross-bar through the guy’s wrist, and gets straight to the “who do work for?!” questioning.
    Thoughts anyone?

PS> this was probably commissioned by JJ, built and actually brought to the set while filming, just to mess with our heads. oldest trick in the book.

Another point in defense of the sword: yes, in reality it would cut off your own hands but so would a regular lightsaber. Lightsabers are extremely unforgiving weapons which is why only jedi tend to use them. It makes sense that in earlier days they were even less forgiving (with the hand guards) and therefore even more “force user exclusive”. You know, it’s like a fixed gear bike or an old fashoned non-rotating barbell that would break a beginners wrists.

But when you make the guard out of saber blades, you are limiting how you can use it when they are on. And there are better ways to have a lightsaber proof guard.
Also, it just looks silly and fan made. It reminds me of Maul’s saber in the Lego special when even more blades came out.

Plenty of bickering going on right now about Luke being the cyborg. Look, we were told as much in the Variety article months ago and an MTV interview with one of Driver’s friends. He is clearly the villain. Unless Driver friend has a reason to lie? And Variety has a reason to post false information? These leaks are all coming from bad sources/JJ Abrams misinformation team mixed in with trolls who have nothing better to do after school but get people riled up on the internet.

  • November 7, 2014 at 6:33 pm
    Permalink

This character would be one and the same as the cyborg. The concept art does a good job of throwing people off showing 2 different characters even though I’m assuming it wasn’t intentional. If this is Han Solo’s son, Adam Driver, would he be playing a cyborg? Driver appears onscreen without any sort of facial modification.

The other aspect which intrigues me is the self-modification the villain undergoes after a tragedy. These details leaked by GabrielGrey and Jason Ward on Twitter. If Driver is not a cyborg, how would he modify his body then? Some sort of sick fascination with self mutilation?
