Damn! Great concept art. Greater than great hehe. So, now let me say my thoughts out loud. The girl protagonist is daisy riley. And the old mechanical man might just be Max Von Sydow.
But i keep wondering, who will play the villain???? I thought Adam Driver but I saw him in a set picture getting out of an X-Wing.

I am convinced that Andy Serkis is the main bad cyborg guy, and Driver is his appretice/errand boy.

all looks cool. like mad max in space. very nice. could not resist looking. so we have good design, nice style, good real feeling, probably good music, probably good sound effects, just need story, acting, directing, and visual effects to come together.

war ravaged worlds. feels good. I always felt lukes cybernetic hand was a device to show how he was becoming like vader and could also become more machine than man – doing that to any other characters seems like it takes away from that journey he may have had.

The only thing that ever made Luke go to the dark side was his hate that was introduced when Vader mentioned turning Leia in ROTJ.

um the bad dude looks really youthful? i reckon its Lupita.

I know some people assumed initially it was AD, but from what we’ve seen and heard, he will be a physical presence, and my gut is telling me that this mechanical being wont have a before/after, just the after.

Without giving anything away, I think these concept arts are really great. They really capture that SW feel for me and that’s what’s going to make this a fantastic SW movie. I could almost hear John Williams music playing while looking at some of them 🙂

On the “bad guy”: I hope he’s more mysterious than scary. I don’t think being too scary fits SW that well.

For “Binary Sunset” with the tiny little human figure (surely Daisy’s character) sitting on top of the fallen AT-AT, I’m all but certain that we will hear exactly the same score as when Luke looks at the setting suns in the original movie. She will look at the suns, and we will have the same score. And it that moment we will know that this is HER journey beginning, just like Luke’s once did!

I feel pretty certain that “Kira” (or whatever) is the protagonist of the Sequel Trilogy. This is entirely proper; finally the series may atone for the truly dysmal gender balance of the Original Trilogy. (Even a non-female like myself now finds it ludicrous that Leia is very nearly the only woman in the universe.)

its looking less likely, but despite positive/negative things thought about the EU (yeah i get it, its dead), i would still have loved a twins arc from the trilogy (girl goes good, dude goes evil). remain hopeful.

i think it would be interesting for a good character to turn bad. when i was a kid, there was always a rumor that the only way luke could master the force was to learn the dark side too, and then turn back from it – but the danger was no one had turned back from it – until vader did, and he died doing so.

Luke may know the exact spot, but it was slightly more common knowledge that Vader was on the death star where he presumably died. If the villain turns out to be a sith fanatic, I believe he would have gone to the ruin of the DS2 and saw Endor, believing maybe the remains of the powerful Dark Armor to have drifted there he finds the funeral pyre and realizes it must have been Luke who killed Vader and then burned the remains. Plus its concept art so it may be more for effect then be an actual scene (though in this case I think it will be)

I know this has probably been answered 100 times but I want to ask here. Where did the rumour come from that the lightsaber Daisy’s character finds is Anakin and Luke’s original blue one? And that it was found in the desert?

I can see from the concept art that it is clearly meant to be that lightsaber and echoes the scene in ANH between Luke and Obi Wan.

The main villain in the art is called grave robber, Luke’s lost lightsaber is found, Vader’s helmet resurfaces for an unknown reason, old locations are being revisited. Seems to me like the grave robber and heroes are racing against each other to find Luke by delving into his past.

      Regarding women as Jedi Knights:

I’ve been into martial arts since I was a kid, and I’ve noticed that usually women choose different styles than men. For example there are way more men in Muay Thai, but Wing Chun otoh seems to be dominated by women (no wonder since this particular kungfu style was invented by a women).

Wouldn’t it be fun if Daisy used a different fighting style than her male counterparts? Less strenght and more agility, using her enemy’s strength against him.

take a look at that “Kira” drawing (the full-body costume one.) OK? Remove Kira’s head and photoshop Luke’s head onto it. What do you think of this character’s strength now? I say this because Luke had a rather small physical frame, and it wasn’t that much different from this Kira drawing. The argument that testosterone is the key to everything wonderful and powerful is a very poor one, and I’m afraid to say that you are misinformed.

Tim Snow, First, It’s a fantasy film. Relax. Second Star Wars doesn’t seem to focus on patriarchal societies. None seem to take prevalence to the stories in a galaxy far, far, away. Fourth, the force transcends physical abilities “Judge me by my size do you”. Fifth, we’ve established a precedent for many female Jedi in the previous films (especially the prequels). Sixth, you’re a complete douchebag and I’m happy to dismantle your insipid moronic arguments.

        @tim snow

You are such an uneducated dork. The reason there were so few women samurai and knights was because of the cultural system of the day which deprived women of doing anything except cooking and cleaning. I’m sure many women wanted to fight for their countries and why those who did, did so undercover (think: Joan of Arc). According to your flawed reasoning, every man will always beat every woman in a game of arm-wrestling.

So, according to you then, countless civilizations in human history fell from power during battle because…….?

Oh, that’s right, because they suddenly switched to female warriors ha ha ha ha, it must be one of history’s less-talked-about secrets. you moron.

Anyways, back to Star Wars, while the presence of a non-penis-equipped lead protagonist may offend some people here, I kinda think it is a nice change. This really goes in line with the recent article on this website about Lucas’ original storyline of a female version of Luke Skywalker. I also really like her home as the fallen AT-AT walker. The whole scenery around it doesn’t really look like Tatooine, but more like a western town. I almost expect to see cowboys riding out on their horses.

          @Tim Snow

The reason why those women were Samurai was because no one told them that they couldn’t be, and so meant that they could become these amazing warriors. These stupid stereotypes are the things that put people boxes and stop people from achieving. Besides, girls have some testosterone in their bodies too, just like boys have some estrogen in their bodies.

All of this concept art is evidence that the grittiness of the OT and the sleek, “classy” PT style will find a content middle-ground in the ST.

Yeah, cause that’s even less likely than Maul surviving the fall in EpI. There’s absolutely no way Abrams would be stupid enough to bring back the Emperor in any way. There are far better stories to be told than stretching out an old haggard sith lord’s story 30 years after everything was all said and done. His return would render the efforts of the rebel alliance in the OT as completely pointless.

The art that was done holding the Mask looks sentimental towards the legacy of Vader not a hatful loathing of the mask.
Palpatine would not go get the mask of Vader or demand it be brought to him.
He hates Vader for turning on him, he would not have survived, however if he did he wouldnt be holding the mask that to him would be like holding someone’s respirator/medical device.

Okay, here’s a theory I get from two of the images. You have Daisy’s character being used as a human shield by “the grave robber” and another image of Daisy’s character fighting a battle alongside(?) of “the grave robber”. Note, the “grave robber’s” hand positioned as though he is using force powers on Daisy’s character. Perhaps mind controlling? Perhaps, it is at Skellig Michael, where “the grave robber” has finally found the place Luke has secluded himself and is using Daisy’s character as an advantage over Luke.

Am I crazy or am I on to something? Or has someone already pointed this out?

I don’t think shes being used as a human shield. If you look at the picture again it seems as if they’re looking in a mirror; you can see a shoulder on the left side foreground.
Also, the expression on her face is one of horror. like shes just learned a terrible truth that he is whispering in her ear…

I love the look of the movie based on the art. I do think this is really early art though. Maybe even before JJ was on the film. The reason I say that is the look of the x-wings. If you notice all of the x-wings in the art are the old style not what we have seen in the video and the other pics. I think we are looking at early concept art that may or may not make it into the film.

Did anyone else notice the Daisy smuggler art her holster looks just like Han’s? Is this a clue that she is Han’s daughter?

Is that the Tantive IV? Is that Anakin’s ship from the clone wars?

It looks to me like the the “Dark Knight” is trying to force choke Daisy.

Theory: Daisy is in a disguise through out the movie. Think Padme in Ep 1 and Leia in Ep VI. It’s a pretty common in the SW universe for someone to be in disguise. Padme in Ep 1. Anakin in ep II, Han and Luke in Ep IV, and Leia in Ep VI. Lando to a degree in Ep V.

Can you imagine if we would have seen Concept art of Luke and Han in Stormtrooper gear before ep iv? We would have lost our minds and speculation would have been all over the place.

Great art but in the end it doesn’t tell us a whole lot about the movie.

Let’s just take one part of your moronic rant of entitlement: you assert that having a female lead is evidence of the structuralist binary opposition ‘man bad / woman good’ This presumably means that the male lead of the first six films must conversely represent ‘woman bad / man good’. Do you see how pathetic that argument is?

Feels like people just want to believe in their own imagination Luke was twisted to the Dark Side and is this cyborg here, when its abundantly clear he isn’t. I wouldn’t who the cyborg is either but the answer is either Adam Driver who is secretly bionic or yet another unknown actor or CGI character like General Greivous. Which doesn’t sound plausible since the actor would have to be shot against a green screen with the other characters and have stand-in already picked out. I think we’ve already ruled out Andy Serkis.

Actually rumor has it that the cyborg is Ezra from Rebels. The arc of Rebels will be that Ezra turns to the darkside and kills Kanan and goes into hiding during the OT after suffering horrific injuries. He is obsessed with the Sith and Vader specifically. Then he surfaces after the Return of the Jedi to become the new baddy. You can already tell in Rebels that he has darkside tendencies and they will be fully realized at the end of the series.

You may be onto something here… Notice that Ezra has a distinct resemblance to Adam Driver. There have been set pics leaked where you can make out Driver wearing an orange x-wing pilot jumpsuit. It will also be brilliant marketing on Disney’s part to do a reverse “Clone Wars” with the “Rebels” series. As the Clone Wars explained a lot of the back story of the prequels after they were released, maybe Rebels can show the back story of the sequels before they come out. This way the viewers would have so much more of an emotional attachment to the characters and can jump right into the story. Not saying this is the case but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were

In the scene where the Grave Robber is holding the girl, is that supposed to be Daisy Ridley’s character? Or another female? In all the other concept art, Daisy’s character has dark hair, but in this scene the girl has light hair, possibly blonde.

It could be Daisy Ridley’s character. Some of the concept art is dated as early as July 2013, the blonde woman could have been an earlier iteration before anyone was cast, with the one in the snow made later on after she was cast.

    Just a theory I have !

I’m thinking the cyborg villain pics are smoke screens , I think the cyborg villain does not exsist and the reality is the cyborg is a stand in for the real villains image wich I think will be Luke in natural form !

I think JJ and his team wanted to be so secretive about Luke’s turn to the Darkside that they were unwilling to even commit the idea to concept art ! Hence the invention of this creepy looking cyborg dude !

I could be wrong ! But right now I’m thinking we should all be replacing the cyborg dude with Luke in our minds eye ………..

I really think the only person that makes sense… the only person who we know could and should be THAT obsessed with Darth Vader is Luke himself. I immediately saw Luke when I saw the concept of the cyborg holding Vader’s helmet with sadness/compassion/obsession. The only thing keeping me from committing to that idea is Mark Hamill’s beard and long hair. It’s very possible that these are such early concept pics that they didn’t incorporate Hamill’s beard into it. It also could be that Cyborg Luke isn’t a villain but more gray, in between character. A conflicted (possibly dark) jedi but not with the sith/empire. A cybernetic hermit obsessed with his father rather than with the dark side of the force.

It’s better than anything else I’ve seen by far. Honestly, I think that Rebels will be more of a tie-in with the OT than the ST. I think the pay off for that show will be in seeing how the events that take place set up the OT. Maybe in one of the final episodes we will see the crew of the Ghost steal the death star plans, which results in the deaths of those characters (at least Kanan and Ezra). This would make Luke the last Jedi for real. Maybe Hera gets captured and sold to Jabba and joins his dancing girls (jk). I said all that to say that I think these characters in the concept art are all completely new characters (aside from Chewy).

Really, you just don’t understand Star Wars. Ever wonder why there were so many different species in the Jedi Council and Senate chamber? Or in the Cantina? That’s right, because Star Wars is a multi-cultural, men-and-female equality world. That’s part of the appeal to George Lucas’ world. And btw, it doesn’t take huge muscles like The Rock to swing a lightsaber. And there are women out there who are stronger than Luke at age 17.

We all know the OT is the better trilogy because of how impacting it was on the culture and the film industry as a whole. Not to mention the acting, plot development, and pretty much everything else were far superior to the PT; unless, of course, you’re an action-hungry, numb-minded moviegoer below the age of 14. It goes without saying that the OT is about as classic as films can get, unlike the prequels.

The prequels’ strengths include: the politics of Star Wars, the evolution of Palpatine, and the advancement of special effects which influenced everything from lord of the rings to the upcoming ST.

I also agree with the official site that the duel of the fates sequence was the best lightsaber battle of the entire saga.

It’s obvious that Lupita is one (maybe even Asajj herself, Yoda lived 800, there are other species who live longer than 100). IMDB says Maisie-Sellers is an Emissary, betcha she’s one too. My gut says Luke has escaped from wherever he was being held captive, and IS the evil-looking cyborg dude (aka Graverobber in the pics). Look at them closely…yes – he has a cybernetic arm on the right side. And the cybernetics he’s wearing could easily be a mask.

But the façade is just a decoy/costume to keep himself in hiding, as he is aware there is a new threat on the horizon with the Empire and he’s been tasked by Yoda/Kenobi with rebuilding the jedi order. He’s pulling a classic Leia in Boussh costume…this isn’t the first time either, as he similarily orchestrated the whole raid on Jabba’s palace in ROTJ.

He probably even captures Daisy Ridley’s character during the course of the story, as well, and is generally believed to be evil. But in reality he’s taking her in hiding and will be training her eventually. The big red herring of the movie will be when the cyborg’s identity is revealed to be Luke.

It wouldn’t surprise me, either – if he leaves breadcrumbs at the beginning of the story so Ridley’s character finds him, like an old artifact lightsaber, etc. And especially if he foresees that it eventually reunites him with his old friends.

In other words, the cyborg’s actions may be perceived as evil or even borderline dark through the course of the movie, but they’re really being done for the greater good of the galaxy.

What the greater evil is, I don’t know yet. I assume the Empire has something significant up their sleeves if Luke feels he has to mask his identity.

Gotta say, it’s fun to speculate but this is the most plausible storyline I’ve come up with yet.

    In JJ we trust…

I might be alone on this, but the only issue I have with this concept art is the light saber hilt. It seems almost built to be handled with one hand. Personally, I really enjoyed the idea of light sabers being more like katanas than short swords. The PT really over-killed the whole “wielding two light sabers at once” thing for me. I’d like to see intense one-on-one saber battles in the ST like we saw in ESB, ROTJ and ROTS.

If the Dark Knight character is really the villain, then Disney would be stupid to draw images of what he/she really looks like: images that could be misappropriated, as these seemingly have, and posted all over the internet. More likely they would draw an image of (Palpatine/Cyborg or other) that represents said villain.

you clearly have no idea about the point of conceptual art. It’s not fancy drawings they do on set in their spare time. They want to see what works and looks good before they make decisions. Disney would be stupid to draw images? .. Um conceptual art and designs are pretty vital to a film production!

Her adopted home planet was destroyed. Her father was the most infamous Sith lord of all time. She’s been through incredibly traumatic life experiences. Luke passed his test thanks to Obi-wan and Yoda’s guidance. Who does Leia have? Especially if Luke has been gone for years? Thank about Mortis….if there is one good twin, then there is invariably one bad one as well…

Perhaps Luke tried, but Jedi were seen as pariahs in the galaxy. Couple that with the fact that Leia badly wanted a political career and was forced to lie about her ancestry and her force abilities to maintain said career (Just Like Sheev Palpatine!). This lie could have eaten away at her, and turned her dark and bitter and mean inside, thus opening the door for “a new evil” to emerge.

The grave robber, like an acknowledgement that revisiting Star Wars is like robbing a grave where the sacredness of Star Wars/the past is disturbed and threatened. What I like less is the grandiose looking chrome trooper in the firey environment who recalls the Clingons from Into Darkness. Oh I also like that they are going with some of the darker brown cliffs of Tatooane.

I think it will be a mix of new and clasic. Star Wars 6 still had TIE’s because they will always be the perfect balance between cost effective ships and manpower, but it also introduced the tie-interceptor. Even in episode 4, at the height of the empire, there was technically more advanced ships (the tie advanced etc.) but its not a strict substitute since its not cost effective to give everyone a ship that powerful. I’m 99% positive we will see AT LEAST one new or modified TIE variant.

Well it’s been a full day and Disney hasn’t removed the original site with the leaked pics, which means this was purposely done for PR by JJ making fans and media believe it was an unofficial leak, more publicity, and making people feel they are being naughty for looking at them.

Which brings me to what I believe is an Easter Egg in all this batch of concept art. After downloading, image analyzing the TIE hangar with Stormtrooper pic, I have come to the conclusion it is an actual screen capture of an almost finished frame shot from the film itself. The detail, lighting, reflections and realism of the hangar is way, way overboard for concept art and even CGI enhanced concept art. Those troopers are actual extras, the highly realistic detailed reflections on their armor is a dead giveaway, especially if you zoom on the left trooper. They have passed the image thru an enhancer to make the picture appear to be art, especially if you focus on the right side which has been manipulated, but zoom and sharpen and you can remove the enhancement. The left side of the image though has remained free of any manipulation.
Anyway this is my speculation not only for that pic but the unofficial leak probably came from the producers themselves.
Furthermore the Greenwood art may also be a nearly finished frame from the film. I never heard of concept art actually looking 100% like the actual film location set. That pic is the only one that has been entirely (purposely?) blurred.
My favorite is still the AT-AT shelter, the one from ground level looking into the belly.

I agree, 2 or 3 of these almost look like blurred out stills from the actual movie. Very detailed art if it’s not.

Doug Chaing used motion blur and flares that were Photoshoped after initial concept art was complete. This is not his art work but it is definitely not from scenes shot on film. The artists and their techniques change as well as new tech in the toolbox.
Many cg concept artists are out there and this is early stuff.

Yeah, some of this “art” definitely looks like screen caps. It looks fantastic, though. I’m loving the idea of a darkside Leia, who can’t control the galaxy post ROTJ, and, giving in to her fear of losing power, subsequently turns to the dark side. Maybe her and Solo have children (Ridley and Driver?) that are separated early in age to protect them from her (throwback to OT and ST) This would explain Ridleys life of squalor as a junker, yet the actress’s uncanny physical resemblance to Leia. This storyline would certainly add a tragic element to old Han, deepening the character and widening the spectrum. Personally, I would love to see some of these OT characters from a more melancholic angle…Looks like it’s gonna be a long wait.

It doesn´t make any sense. She´s not the ultimate messiah to save the galaxy or a big threath to any bad guys…she´s no one to hide…Hell Luke was someone and he didn´t hide, he was fighting….Leia was somebody – and she was fighting as well…..why would the daughter of Han and Leia be there?

Hahaha please stop with that nonsense of Leia being evil :-))))) she´s 155 cm, she would be a mini antagonist 🙂 no way. It´s Adam Driver! If this trilogy questions what is good and what is bad, it has to be a Solo/Skywalker who turns to evil thinking that this is the right way…Leia and Han will both end in episode 7, probably giving their lives to save their kid (Driver?)…And the mask? Maybe Driver gets hurt and everyone thinks he´s dead but he´ll be saved by some other bad guy and ends as partially cyborg…think – it´s been said many times that 7 is about old ones passing the torch to the young ones…and that´s it. 8 and 9 will be about the fresh ones, only Luke´s survives…at least as a force ghost..

Not that I prefer it, but. A female protagonist could work if done properly. Remember this it the STAR WARS universe not the MMA. First off make her real woman emotionally. Not a woman trying to be a man. Make her a little sensitive and hot tempered. And for combat she could be lightning fast. So if you have lightning speed mixed with hot temper and a light saber? The grave robber art photo had me thinking about what might motivate one to acquire relics of Darth Vader. One, trying to discover some secret about the dark side that gives the villain an edge over his enemies. Or two, which I hope is not the case, trying to locate DNA from the deposed darth vader in order to clone a new anakin skywalker. Anakin Clone trained from birth in the ways dark side of the force.

The villain in all the art concepts may be a jedi apprentice of Luke Skywalker’s that went bad, that’s why Luke is hiding and there are no jedi around. Luke is reluctant to train more that may turn to the dark side. Let the galaxy fight it out without the jedi. Just a plot theory.

These are my guesses (based on some things we’ve already heard)…

    1. None of the big three will feature in the opening sequence which will be an aerial battle between Empire and (what was) the Rebel forces. This and the opening crawl introduces us to the current state of the galaxy politically and takes us right into the struggle between the 2 sides which is still raging. R2 will be present in an X-wing with one of the Solo kids piloting. The sequence will focus on the defection of John Boyega’s character and the shooting down of his Tie.

    2. Daisy Ridley rescues the Imperial Pilot from the crashed ship on Tattooine. Chewie may be present with her there as her protector and could be the next major OT character to be revealed. Ridley becomes involved in helping the Pilot escape the pursuing Empire. There must be another good reason why they want Boyega’s character dead.

    3. Luke I’SNT the Grave Robber character, although JJ is well aware that the fans will speculate now right up until release. No coincidence that the hand is being shown and that this character COULD easily be Luke, think the film makers are having some fun here.

    4. The final scene before the closing crawl will be the first time the OT Big 3 are reunited together. This will be after Luke saves Ridley from certain death and returns with her to a Rebel territory (once he understands that the Sith threat has returned to the Galaxy) for an emotional reunion.

The stormtroopers in the hangar bay look like photos of actual prop costumes that were comped into a concept rendering. The guy on the left is a flip-flopped image of the guy on the right. the reflections are the same but backward, and the little circular thing on the shoulder isn’t consistently on the same side from one trooper to the other.

Leia as the grave robber might actually be a great way ‘within the star wars universe’ to work around Carrie Fisher’s appearance and voice being so haggard now, due to all her drug and alcohol abuse over the last 30+ years. When Carrie talks, you can tell that her nasal cavities are practically collapsed, and I’ve been wondering how they are going to reconcile that with the eloquent princess we all remember. It’s like when Mark Hamill was in a car crash after filming ANH, and they had to write the Wampa attack into TESB just to explain his facial reconfiguration, only with Carrie, there’s a lot more ‘splaining to do! So turn her into a cackling villain, and presto.

I don’t know if this has been thrown out there yet, but I have yet to see this theory about the chrome trooper. If Luke is the ultimate Jedi Knight, why not have him don the Chrome Trooper outfit? The simplest idea is usually the right one.

When I look at the “Grave Robber” piece the idea that immediately comes to mind is that this person in is an Imperial Starship outside Endor. Probably there to verify the claims that the Emporer, Vader and Battlestation was destroyed. Maybe even to look for survivors? There are obviously Imperial remnants and they surely would have shown up at some point.

Given that he is in a hooded robe with cybernetic replacement limbs, he is probably a Sith apprentice who searched and inevitably found Vaders remains.

Then the question is, was he Vaders apprentice or was he the Emporers?

They already know the films work well and are huge cash cows as is, so I doubt they’d start messing that up. They picked JJ because of his background and he’s a fan of the series. I think we need to trust their judgment. And George probably gave him the stamp of approval too. If these pictures are in fact concept art/ possible scenes, then I think we’re in for a great film. I think it’s going to mix the lighthearted fun and tension that we need in these films. The picture of the storm troopers and the tie-fighter gets me all excited! 😀

Here’s an explanation: Daisy and Driver are Han and Leia’s kids. Leia and Driver were taking a trip somewhere and their ship crashed on Tatooine, probably attacked by the enemy. Sydow’s character rescued Daisy from the wreckage and she survived as a scrappy orphan living in an AT-AT and obviously being strong with the Force. Leia was thought to be dead but survived (Force luck) with horrific injuries. Thinking her daughter was dead and with her injuries she plunged into the Darkside full throttle and somehow hooked up with the reminance of the Empire. Han and Driver had to go on their own and continue to help lead the Alliance and that is the set up for Episode 7. Perhaps Luke eventually sensed her living in her dark fortress on Skelig and traveled there hoping to save her one day and is in seclusion communing with the Force. The will of the Force or Luke allowed his old lightsaber to fall into the hands of Daisy as he knows she is the only one that can ultimately save Leia as Luke saved Vader. The Grave Robber is of course what’s left of Leia and uses her hate towards her father (from being tortured and what not) to help fuel her rage. She uses the Vader helmet as a symbol for her hate. What do you think?
