Star Wars Game News: Classic Games Re-Released Through GOG, DICE’S Battlefront to Feature First-Person Mode.
Online video game distributor Good Old Games has recently added a handful of titles produced by LucasArts to their already expansive library of games, ranging from titles based on Star Wars and Indiana Jones to original intellectual properties like Monkey Island and Sam & Max. In addition, there’s a bit of information on DICE’s Battlefront inside, along with my take on it.
According to CinemaBlend, there are currently six LucasArts titles available to play, with the promise of more on the way. The first three are all Star Wars titles (X-Wing: Special Edition, TIE Fighter: Special Edition, and Knights Of The Old Republic) while the other three are Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis, Sam & Max Hit The Road, and The Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition. All of these titles can be picked up individually for either $5.99 or $9.99 USD, so if you’re interested in experiencing the golden age of LucasArts, now would be the time to empty your wallet.
And then there’s the bit about Battlefront – EA’s Blake Jorgensen said that the title will be a First-Person Shooter, seemingly in departure of the game’s traditional Third-Person Shooter roots. While some are panicking that EA is forcing their subsidary DICE to neglect a cornerstone of the gameplay of the Battlefront series, I would like to raise a counterpoint (even as a player who always played in Third-Person): this doesn’t change anything. Battlefront has always had the option to toggle between First-Person and Third-Person, and based on the footage that was unveiled at E3, I think it’s safe to say that Battlefront will still have the Third-Person option on the table. First-Person Shooter games traditionally sell better than Third-Person Shooter games, so I can personally understand why Jorgensen would want to appeal to the market that will most likely net him a larger paycheck in the end. Still, it sounds interesting that EA’s vision seems to set the FPS mode as the default option.
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.
I don’t know how much “Jedi action” the new Battlefront will have, but I definitely think that third person works better for lightsaber combat…I would love to see a blended dynamic similar to that of Halo with the default in first person for most combat situations, but switching to third person for other actions like manning turrets, vehicles, or melee stealth attacks. I think the system works, and it would be really awesome to fuse lightsaber combat with a combo system like in the Batman: Arkham games, or even something like the force unleashed with a little less finesse.
Or they could do those transitions as a cut scene, which typically pulls back to 3rdPov for scale sake.
As long as they don’t get rid of the 3rd-person option, I can role with them marketing this as a 1st-person shooter. I loved being able to look at my character.
I’m not familiar with GOG. Do they only do PC games?
Latest shooting schedule, cast & crew sightings, have they wrapped?
Happy birthday! Two more weeks, and it’ll only be another 400 days! 😀
I normally used first person view… but for things like Destroyer Droids I was always 3rd.
Plus it can’t be applied to vehicles. It just can’t. I’d die if I couldn’t actually see my awesome SW vehicles of destruction in action.
I need to find my joystick again.. 🙂
I forgot first-person was even an option outside of the damned jedi/sith mode, which IMO undermined the game concept to begin with. There are a multitude of games to play as superhero-level SW characters. I play Battlefront to be a Stormtrooper, and found it incredibly irritating when SW:B2 came out and all servers were playing Jedi/Sith near constantly. While third-person is also necessary for droidika and similarly weird characters like whampa,I always felt that the majority of game play was only worth while in first-person. It would definitely have been a deal-breaker for me if first-person had not been available.
Yes! X-Wing and TIE fighter my favorite Star Wars games of all time! I, too, need to locate a decent joystick…
Third-person STINKS!
Gives a Mario-like feel to everything.
Like some stupid kiddie game or something.
First-person perspective will make this game
the coming masterpiece that it is destined to be ….
@ViralHide
I just wanted to take a moment out to personally thank you for not bowing to public pressure and banning me.
[I heard some things ….]
This blog can’t be beat for VII news aggregation, and I enjoy posting here very much.
As far as my comments go, I just call ’em the way I see ’em. It’s just as bad, you know, to say that EVERYTHING is “amazing” [Jesus Christ that word’s so overused/undeserved], that EVERYONE gets a trophy, etc. Anyway, I just wanted to make my appreciation known. Over & out.
If 1st/3rd person view becomes a serverside option, then there’s not much of a problem. People can make their pick.
Just show it in the dedicated server list.
You’re right, of course.
It’s simply a matter of a line of code to have a 1st/3rd-person perspective OPTION in the settings.
I’m not much of a shooter fan. The only reason I was able to enjoy the first to BF games is due to 3rd person view. I’m very hyped for this game but if the FP view is the only option I won’t be playing it. =
