Star Wars Rebels Review: S01 E04 “Breaking Ranks”.

Troops

Disney has released the next episode of Star Wars Rebels: “Breaking Ranks” on their Disney XD app. Read our review after the jump…

Here’s a small excerpt from the review:

I know not everyone has been won over by the show, but I need to remind those doubters out there that the Clone Wars took at least a full season to really hit it’s stride and figure out where it’s strengths and weaknesses were. I feel Rebels is just starting to hit it’s stride and if that’s the case…then we are in for treat for the rest of the season! IMO, Rebels has been able to recover from the bumps in the road that EVERY new show/cartoon faces in it’s opening episodes. This is a great sign of things to come!

So does “Breaking Ranks” manage follow up the same way the amazing previous episode had hit all the marks that it needed to hit? SCROLL DOWN! TO FIND OUT!!!!

I don’t like Young cadets being prepared to be stormtroppers.
First i thought probably were the rest of the clones, but when they took off their helmets i thought it’s a bad idea to show how to fight to Young children.
    Unnecessary.

then you obviously dont know the story of Han rescuing Chewie…han Solo was an imperial cadet.and you obviously dont know the imagination of children, or remember being one..they love that shit

It’s technically Legends (Legacy is a completely different series that is now classified as Legends material), but I don’t think they’d abandon it for the Canon. It’s a more compelling story for Han and Chewie than to just say “Han was always a smuggler and he ran into Chewie at one point”.

The Han Solo rescuing Chewie From the Spice mines of Kessel while he was in the Imperial Academy, leading Chewie to owe Han a life debt is a back story George Lucas created. I am sure they wont stray away from that. i can see them doing it much differently than the books, but the scenerio will probably stay in place, just not the story. I am sure we will eventually find out when/if they do a Han Solo movie or something.Episode 1 of Rebels kind of hints that this may even happen in this show….if not, it definately stole elements of the Han/Chewie Backstory i think…..just MY opinion.

I can know the story of Han (silly story by the way) and at the same time disagree with recruiting children, smartass. You obviously don’t know me, or my two children, or my imagination what is capable off. Or even you obviously don’t know me because i’m 37 and every day i look the children inside me and laugh with opinions like yours.
Bye sir, i have to play with my children.

Mr. Filloni already made it clear in a ‘Rebels Recon’ webisode that stormtroopers are not clonetroopers; the clones are too old for military service due to their advanced aging process.

Genetically altered Clones were created to serve one purpose: Sidious’ War.

“After the fall of the Galactic Republic and the formation of Emperor Palpatine’s New Order, the Republic Grand Army’s clone troopers were re-designated as stormtroopers. Throughout the early years of Palpatine’s reign, the Empire continued to utilize the Jango Fett template, but later commissioned the creation of new troopers from different genetic sources. Cloning remained essential to the Imperial Military, although the introduction of birth-born recruits into the ranks of the Stormtrooper Corps gradually reduced clone soldiers to a minority status”
14 years after clone wars it’s normal recruiting other people (kids or whatever…)because clones are too old…or whatever.
But if Mr. Filloni said that he has no idea about the story of stormtroopers.

Hey! This is animated series – it´s cartoon! It´s ment to be for kids! If you want to enjoy cartoons, you have to find the kid inside you. And if canon/non canon BS bothers you with this show – ignore what Disney says what´s canon and what´s not and choose your own canon – to me, for example, the only canon were, are and will be the movies. And I enjoy more Clone Wars and Rebels, because this way I really don´t have problem with anything in it 🙂

No problems whatsoever with the story decision to show children being indoctrinated into the Imperial military. If anything, it just emphasizes how twisted and evil the regime is. Also, it reinforces the notion that the Imperial military is loosely inspired by the Nazis, who had their own “Hitler Youth” program.

    http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10007820

…I find it odd that the idea of the Imperials recruiting adolescents is causing such a stir here, and yet nobody seems to mind that the Jedi Order in its heyday was basically stealing babies and brainwashing them before they could even choose for themselves!

But the Force was with them (force sensitive youth) and it was at the pinnacle of the galactic Democracy. These young “Force” users needed guidance or else they could be a serious threat to the SW Universe, using their power for their own ends or becoming disciples of rogue Bad Force users. They ultimately had a choice as the Jedi emphasized “choosing” the correct path. Though dogmatic in their approach, the Jedi were careful in the training (PT) and did not aggressively force them to do anything but to facilitate how to choose their own destiny. A huge difference in my opinion. Many Jedi flirted with the bad side and free to leave the order: Dooku, Anakin, etc.

      @ DarthDisney:

Nah, I thought Jedi being trained from childhood on was bad as well, especially since Ben waited until Luke was a young man. Why did he wait so long?

The way the PT Jedi behaved, Ben should’ve raised Luke himself.

These are Natural born children unlike the Clones who were created and programed for the sole purpose of being soldiers and/or tools for aggression and defense. These “regular” children are more akin to us and should be much more relateable to audiences since they are nat genetically altered. This also shows the parallels to AOTC (in training of clones and training of Jedi kids). It also clearly alludes the process of historic indoctrination of youths into a political cause or national ideology. Ex. Hitler’s Youth etc.

I think that every society has a way of indoctrinating youths to a broader Social/political Program, family, tribe, nation, culture etc.. From the most primitive societies to the most modern and complex ones, teaching the youth to get with the program is universal theme throughout mankind’s history. In our society children are bombarded daily with symbols, language, values, beliefs, and religion that is in accordance to the views and expectations of that host society. Cartoons, video games, movies, and the newer forms of communicative media also serve and operate to disseminate certain “views” in youths in a given society. They teach us what is right and wrong, what we should aspire to be and may even be used to carry out a national goal or agenda (good or bad). In some cases, bigotry/racism, sexism, chauvinism (male or general), and violence are the underlying messages in these societies. This is not new.

If you actually watched the show….too. you would have noticed that no children were threatened and the only one to shoot at or use a weapon towards a child was the other cadet way past a point that Ezra and comp. Had gotten away. Some people seem way…way too touchy on this……all the ‘Anon’ people making comments….sometimes I just dont understand the way some silly people think…….ps…my mother and grand parents lived in Norway when they were invaded by Hitler and the Nazi’s and my mom as a child was directly effected by a Nazi officer as a small child that could have meant her life and still bears the scar. And BTW this women was not all oh wooo is me….theyre training kids….oh the sky is falling.

I don’t really understand all this complaning about children being trained as soldiers. Even democratic states like the United States or European countries have this kind of military academies for children.
