Very cool video from 2006 has been posted on The Cantina today. It’s Episode 09 of the show “Dinner for Five” hosted by Kevin Smith. In this episode the special guests were Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams who were discussing their latest projects by that time and of course Star Wars… Â It’s really funny to see those 3 together 8 years ago. As you remember Kevin Smith was recently invited on the Episode 7 set by J.J. Abrams himself. Also in this episode Abrams discusses the movie he wrote “Regarding Henry” starring Harrison Ford. And not only that but Mark Hamill talks about an evil Luke. So plenty of irony in these. Check it out. The (from 10:45)

will Luke be evil in Episode VII?
No, its just wrong and no matter how executed, would run the franchise and JJ’s career.
I respectfully disagree about how the execution could not sway the audience’s reaction to the film. What if you were reading rumors of ESB and you read this hypothetical spoiler:
1. Luke searches for a great Jedi Master but instead meets a really old green alien that kind of looks like a gnome and has elf ears. He talks in like a reverse speak dialogue.
I do my best to remind myself that spoilers often sound much worse than the way they could appear on screen. On the flip side, a clever rumor or cool set, props, etc., could look completely disappointing. I really believe that if executed properly, it could turn into a really iconic moment.
Like everything else it is all speculation and rumor and context could add a lot.
At the same time completely altering Luke’s path is an extreme jump. Could it work? Maybe but that kind of jump seems out of character.
Now having said that MSW based their idea off concept art with is risky as that often changes. They even pointed that out in an article about Chewie and having a cybernetic arm in some.
They also ran a follow up to their rumor in which a source supposedly told them there is more to it. And also had it suggested that it might be a scene similar to what Luke went through in Empire with the cave.
The story can be told in hundreds of different ways. All those versions would still be great. The story and characters are so dense that even fans can create their own Star Wars sequel trilogy. The hope is that current folks at the helm of production would choose a comprehensive and compelling version of this “potential” story that will resonate with all fans.
All fans? Never going to happen. Lol
Fan base is too big with too many different view points and opinions on where the story and characters should go.
If they can pull off making the entire fan base happy they deserve an award just for that.
Remember that lots of “fans” are involved in the making of it. Should be interesting to say the least.

I just don’t see a situation where everyone is happy. Just too big of a gap between some of the sections in the fan base.
They can and should film hundreds of alternate scenes that can potentially end up in the final cut. Heck they can revolutionize film making by creating the first “Choose your own movie ending” or “follow your favorite character” with this vast store of scenes. You can follow your desired character through the conclusion of the movie. Kind of like pulp fiction meets video games. They can release it on blue ray or whatever standard may exist in 2016. Like watching the movie all over again but through a different camera lens.
Depends on how do you define evil? At times in the Storyline, it is hard to define what “Good”” or Bad” is. Remember that Luke wanted to turn Vader to good side while Yoda and Kenobi (Who were Force spirits) wanted him destroyed. Did that make Luke evil too? In some way he defied the wishes and wisdom of “THE Good force spirits” (Arguably the most Powerful Jedi) for the crazy idea of redeeming The Darth Lord. It all depends on your “certain point of view.”
I think about when Yoda defines the good side. Luke asks Yoda on Dagobah: “How do you know the good side from the bad?” and Yoda says;: “When your calm…at peace.” Based on this definition anyone who is passionate, erratic, angry or generally swayed by emotion can potential succumb to evil. Even over-zealous “good guys” can be considered liable as would an overt “madman” who intentions are purely to harm.
I think it is a beautiful idea that Luke finally proved wiser than Ben, was wiser than Yoda. They had given up on Vader and were training Luke to destroy Vader and the Emperor. But in the end, Luke saw that what he did with his light saber was not important. The important thing was what he did NOT do with his light saber. He threw it down, stopped playing Palpatine’s game and so produced what was maybe the ONLY conceivable situation that could lead to the Emperor’s fall.
I think it comes down to prejudice and experience. Luke’s innocense and curious love for his unknown father allowed him to see Vader differently. Yoda and Obi Wan had bad experiences with Anakin. There was no way they could have repaired the damage. I mean he Destroyed the order and burned bridges with everybody. The Jedi were central to this rift. It took an outsider (not in the Jedi Order); his own progeny to achieve the impossible. Vader did have his own personal designs for that very reason.
well i think it goes back to the idea of the “chosen one.”If in fact Anakin was, then Luke is the Redeemer. He would have way more insight into the Force than anyone. The midichlorians conceived Anakin and in turn Luke so they are central to the Force. He potentially could see things that others could not. Everybody else is a side character.. this includes even the most powerful Jedi.
And the conspiracy theories begin..
Kevin Smith recently said this event was why he was invited to the set because, he introduced JJ to Mark.
Not to take anything away from the already mentioned filmakers at the helm of the next projects but it would be cool to have Kevin Smith direct a Star Wars spin off in the future. Some great dialogue would be had. John Favreau also!

I am excited for Episode VII, but even with all it’s flaws I love the Expanded Universe. I don’t know exactly how this movie is going to turn out, but I will be somewhat disappointed if we don’t have at least a few Jedi, maybe not a whole order. If we don’t have at least a solo child and maybe a skywalker child. I will also be disappointed if Luke has not developed a lot in the force and been a major part in the last 30 years of Star Wars Events. And of course most of all I it would feel bad if he has turned to the Dark Side. My thoughts and feelings.
why does film instantly look outdated and from the 90s once it becomes 5 years old or more? are cameras seriously getting that much better we just dont notice the slow changes hah
Think of how much HD has changed since it first came out. You have 420p or 720p compared to 1080 and it’s a world away. Now compare 4k with 1080 anything and that’ll soon look old. Also makes a difference with projector and what’s projecting it (i.e. dlp vs led etc…)
Dinner For Five was not shot on film.
The show started production in 2001, so it was shot on SD video, either using Beta SP or DVCPRO.
The video looks crappy because it is a VHS dub that someone digitized, compressed and uploaded to YouTube.
“Technology” is but one aspect into the depths of a classic story. Without a great universal story, a Movie,no matter how much money is pumper into it, will eventually fade away.
Carnt wait to see DARK SIDE Luke ! Hammils acting chops are so underrated ! He is going to tear the Galaxy up !

But that’s not Marks problem ! He will own whatever material is given to him .
It was always George’s intention pre-episode 6 scripting to have Luke turn to the dark side…that’s why he had the cave scene in episode 5 as Luke having the fear that he could be consumed by what he’s trying to fight all along. And that’s also why he added the “There is still another” line by Yoda to leave the door open for that next character for episode 7, 8, and 9 before they threw that alway for Leia. There’s a book that some guy on the internet wrote that deals with this and he has the interviews and the very brief notes that George had in plotting the series. It’s just continuing the trend that Star Wars always follows in dealing with different thematic issues in each trilogy and witnessing the fall of beloved heroes very much similar to our world but ultimately ending in a black and white conclusion with the good guys winning.
One thing for sure about episode 7, 8, and 9 was that they were supposed to be more blurred in grey rather than black and white and they directly address the issues of both sides ideologies and the movies where supposed to test/question the moral ambiguity between characters and it questioned the black and white line that Star Wars always had. This ties in very well with the Empire vs the Republic and the Sith vs the Jedi. They were really supposed to dissect both sides and ultimately find truth. It’s very interesting what has been in store for the next trilogy the last 40 years. Might we see any of this come to fruition? Who knows…
It was as if the first trilogy was supposed to be some Greco-Roman tragic love tale, a declining Knighthood order ultimately breaking down in ideology and in perception, and with hints of a falling democracy ultimately leading to an Empire totalitarian galaxy. The second trilogy dealing with the rise of a small group of people filled with hope trying to fight for what’s good and for freedom and ultimately testing them in extremely challenging ways and also developing them with unique sub-arcs by the end. And finally the last trilogy dealing with the repercussions of the effect of taking down a galaxy wide Empire, dealing with the sins of the Father and with sins of the past, dealing with moral lines and moral ambiguity, challenging the rebels in rebuilding order but with high consequences,and exploring the grey area of both sides. Very interesting to see how it all ends up.
Lines can be blurred to keep people on the edge of their seats, but not at the expense of the continuity and integrity of the characters and story.
Coincidence that this video surfaces immediately after alleged images of Luke ‘confronting Ford and Driver’ and looking suspiciously like he’s become a villain.

I tend to believe the rumors about the young cast try to confront a dark side of the force and realize that they are in over their head.
One of them goes looking for Luke(Daisy), who is her uncle.
On a non-EpisodeVII speculation note: I loved the story of how Mark kept pitching in vain to George all these ideas for his character, While Harrison just did it and hoped George wouldn’t catch on. LOL!
Hamill also dropped some pretty huge sequel spoilers when he appeared on Funky Walker Dirty Talker all those years ago. Someone should upload that to hear what he says. In fact, he even quotes some Evil Luke dialog.
Then why the heck has nobody guessed that he would turn evil in episode 7 in the last year, with all the speculation? Very weird.
Because that show is part of MADtv, and thus satire.
An ‘Evil Luke’ would be rather belated at this point. And undo the whole OT.
I completely disagree. Luke could have had so many experiences in the last 30 years that caused him to turn. Maybe he fell in love and she died, so he learns more about the rumors of bringing back loved ones through the powers of the dark side.
So many possibilities. It sounds like many on this board just desire Luke to be good and I think it can work either way. Use your imagination.
Not wanting the OT cast to have their character messed with doesn’t have anything to do with lack of imagination. Obviously everyone has their own idea of what would make for an entertaining story and that’s fine.
With the story taking place 30 some years after RotJ the OT cast is playing more of a touch passing role. To up and alter their characters to some sort of extreme opposite of where they were left off because it’s “new” or “different” isn’t something everyone would enjoy seeing. New and different is something that can be developed with the the new cast without stepping on the original group.
Not an attack on you or your opinion it just seems unfair to claim a lack of imagination as a reason for people to want to see the OT cast stay true to their character as we know them.
Luke and Leia are central to the whole Saga. Born in the PT, define the OT and should conclude the ST.
Silver, I was refering to the OP (Anon) when he said Luke turning to the dark side is “belated”. If you take a moment to ‘imagine’ the possible experiences Luke Skywalker has been through in 30 years, you would could come up with so many possible reasons he turned that would not seemed forced (no pun intended).
My other point being just because you want Luke to be good doesn’t mean if he is not it “doesn’t make sense! Argh rabble, rabble, rabble!”
I think that if Luke were to turn to the dark side, end of Ep VI was the time. You see when he throws away his lightsaber instead of killing the fallen chosen one because he’s still a good man (sort of), that is THE point where Luke defeated his own dark side.
If luke is going to be a Sith in the next trilogy, there has to be something else to it. Something that changes the whole dynamic of everything that forces a “reset” of who is Good and who isn’t.
But think about this. Wouldn’t it be interesting if Leia and Han are the bad guys? Thus getting Luke labeled BY LEIA as insane or even a Sith? Not likely, but equally as plausible as Luke being the bad guy.
any rate, I think Luke and the Solos having a falling out in the opening could be very interesting.
The thing that was dragging Luke to the dark side was fear and anger. When he refused to give in to the anger, he created an opportunity for his father to follow suit. They healed each other in the final moments of Jedi.
You cannot top the arc that Luke went through in the the OT. The only thing that could possibly be an more difficult for Luke would be if we he were to have lost a child. Maybe that would bring him to the dark side.
But then he is directly stepping into Anakin’s arc of losing children and wife, etc. I just don’t see them going down that road. It would be too much of a repeat.
I see Luke as more of a sage at this point. An elder. A legend.
The arc of the NT will not be Luke’s. He will be aiding the new generation and their arc.
If Boyega and Daisy are both orphans, so to speak. Then finding family and confronting their own past could be the new journey.
Definitely hoping to see Evil Luke! Like Mark said, it will give him more to work with… especially for the next 3 movies.
Bring on Evil Luke! We don’t need a saintly sterile Jedi elder like we saw in the prequels. No, let Corvette Summer unleash pure evil!
