Where Were You in Two-Oh-One-Two?!

D-Day!The online New York Times among every other possible media outlet reported, “The Walt Disney Company, in a move that gives it a commanding position in the world of fantasy movies, said Tuesday it had agreed to acquire Lucasfilm from its founder, George Lucas, for $4.05 billion in stock and cash” […] “Mr. Iger said Disney acquired a detailed treatment for the next three Star Wars films as part of the acquisition. He noted that the last film in the series, Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, was released in 2005, a period that he said has created “pent-up demand.” “Pent-up demand?!” That’s a massive understatement. Today marks our second Birthday, our second year of covering all the Star Wars news fit to print! This also happens to be the second anniversary of Disney Day (D-Day) the day that it was officially announced that George Lucas sold his companies – Lucasfilm Ltd. specifically – to the Walt Disney conglomerate. With that exciting news that blew up the internets SW7N was born!

I was at home, bored, and browsing the internet randomly. I think I was checking my e-mail when I saw a Yahoo news story stating something to the affect that, “Lucas Sells LucAarts to Disney.” I almost didn’t bother to click the article since the title erroneously read: “LucasArts.” I did and discovered, along with about 4 billion of my Star Wars bretheren, that NOT only did George sell Lucasfilm Ltd. to Disney, but that there were already plans for a SEQUEL TRILOGY!!! To quote Mark Hamill, “I was gobsmacked!”

More Star Wars

I spent the rest of the evening browsing message boards and looking for news. A couple days later — on a message board that shall NOT be named — I came across this guy who said he had a Blog. From that day forth I became a loyal fan of starwarsnewsnet.com as Viral’s site is one of the two or three dedicated sites on the internet that updates daily (and sometimes hourly) with fresh, new Star Wars content.

Thank you, Viral Hide, from the bottom of my heart for creating this awesome Blog and message board empire!

    Happy B/D-Day!!!

I was in London on Business, just got back to my hotel room and saw I had been tagged by one of my Bro’s on FB in the news story they had posted. I could not…and still cannot!…believe it!! I actually fell to my knees to read the rest of the story, my mind could not cope with using my legs and processing the amazing news I had been waiting for since 1983!! Incredible moment that I will never forget. However then came the worry….will Harrison Ford agree to return? Will VII even feature the Big3?!! I stressed over this for the many Months that followed before the cast was announced. So happy to know the Big3 will in fact star in VII and that at this point in time 2 years later, VII has actually almost wrapped principal photography. Amazing, inspiring, epic news that makes me so excited for the future… the Sequel Trilogy, the spin-offs and everything else Star Wars that’s coming our way!! Very good times ahead indeed! MTFBW us all! Always.

*wipes the crust from my eyes.*
Hot shit, has it been 2 years already?

Where was I? Hmm. I was casually seated on my recliner watching CNN when I noticed the announcement in the crawl that Disney had bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion dollars and that Episode VII was on its way.

I had given up on Star Wars outside the OT because of the PT and Clone Wars, but Disney taking over is the reason why I’m back. So far, so good.

    Imagine what’ll await at the 3-year anniversary… 😀

While new Star Wars is great, the Star Wars saga is the tragedy of darth vader and ended at return of the Jedi. They should have started a new trilogy set during a different time period. That would have been awesome. Instead awesome games and novels are now considered non canon. What the fuck Mickey Mouse!!!

Lucas made the decision, not Mickey(tm),
Also, bear in mind vader and anakin were originally (as of A New Hope’s release) two different people.
Ep VI was thought at one point by lucas to be the last ever star wars movie to be filmed – and then he decided he was gonna’ make the prequels after all.
I think the whole “series begins and ends with Anakin” rule was made to give the PT more gravity

Lucas said a lot of stuff about what couldn’t have predicted, but now, in this century, Lucas made the conscious decision to sign it over to Kathy Kennedy, knowing full well that she would make a revived franchise out of it.
George knew this, and by singing it over, gave it his blessing.
      That should mean something.

Because Episode 7,8,9 are the link to keeping older fans like myself and all of my friends. I could care less about the Standalone Movies, the cartoons, the EU, My interest has always been in the OT, then the PT, and now the ST. I think all of us are getting the best of both worlds because in a sense Disney is catering to all types of fans now. Will it be good? That remains to be seen.

      Ningger:

No offense, but that’s just a bad idea. Disney could always do a brand new trilogy in another era down the road (and trust me, they will!), but there’s only so much time to bring back the old cast for new movies.

Plus, doing VII will bring back many old school fans for Disney’s New Era of Wars. Do that shit right! xD

I was visiting my parents. That very morning (before I heard the news) I had awoke thinking about George Lucas with a strange new sense of post-prequel reconciliation. I was even thinking of writing to him and saying that, even as a prequel/special edition hater, I have infinitely more reason to be grateful to him than angry. I thought of how I needed to let many things go in life just as Lucas needed to “let star wars go”. Later that day my brother called and told me about Disney doing SW 7. I wasn’t too excited at first because I assumed they would feel like the prequels but as first Michael Arndt then Abrhams were announced I realized that these films would at very least feel “professional” and that there was even a chance they could be really good. I’ve gotten more excited as I’ve read rumors, particularly about the story being told (or introduced) from the p.o.v. of an awol tormtrooper.

I remember my friend texting me about that Disney bought Lucasfilm and Episodes 7,8,9 were being made, and I thought it was a hoax. When I finally saw it on the news, it really didn’t hit me how huge the news was for a few days. Then once the rumors started coming out that Ford, Fisher and Hamill were returning is when I realized how big a deal this is going to be.

I was in an all-hands meeting, listening to a presenter drone on about protocol, when my boss shoved his phone under my nose and I read the headline. My eyes popped, my pulse quickened and I stifled a whoop. I immediately searched for any tidbits I could find, my mind racing at the possibilities. The presenter was a million miles away.

I didn’t get much done the rest of the day.

My heart skipped a beat when I read the words, Disney to buy Lucasfilm… My heart skipped a second beat when I then read Episodes 7,8 & 9 to be released!!!!!!!!!

I heard from a buddy of mine. Much like Jedi77-83, I thought he was feeding me a line of BS. I was in panic mode for a little bit until I realized that they would be in good hands. I felt that if there were any fans more anal about their obsession than Star Wars fans, it was comic book fans and they seem to be happy with the Marvel franchise that Disney gave them.

I heard the news that “Disney bought Lucasfilm” At first i was like so what?! at that split second felt a little saddened that Lucas would give up his mental child: his creative property without trying to redeem the SW franchise. I kept reading the article that a ST was in the works that was gonna possibly feature the old gang. Can they do that? Then i remembered it was Disney were talking about here. They can do anything. Then I was like, “Now were talking!” and thought, but what if they change it all up? What if it loses it’s depth and story? But remembered that Disney knows ‘story’ and ‘characters’ so thats okay i guess. Will the formulas remain intact? Who would return? Will they keep the concept of the FORCE familiar or compromise it? Will the new characters suck? overall it was great news but it included a huge asterisk. A very welcome one at that.

booohooo OT fan boy cry babies… Get real! I am 39 and I watch anything star wars.

OT had its shit like PT had.
    What are they?
1.Same crap romance. Let me point it out!
PT the romance between Anikan and Padme, while the OT had the romance between Han and Leia, both where crap!

2.OT had just as bad dialogue has PT had.

3.Empires strikes back, Luke chops the arm off the Wompa. Why not kill it and use the cave to keep cover of the cold? Also why did Luke leave Yoda on Dagabah? Why when leaving Hoth they fly right into the fleet of the empire?????

4.How could STONE age creatures defeat the top squad of the empire, with clubs, rocks, and logs? For real…

5.Brother and sister kiss not only in episode 4 but in 5 and 6 too.

6.Why didn’t Chewie get a freaking medal of bravery like Han and Luke did in episode 4?

7.Episode 4 in the deathstar a stormtrooper bonks his head on the door!

8.Deathstar ya ya its amazing right? Ok so why could it be taken out with a tiny porthole? Why was the empire taking so much time trying to get back the plans? When the empire should have been doing was finding all the weaknesses.

9.Jabba’s palace with c3-p0 and r2-d2 pass a Gonk droid upside down being tortured and its screaming… why????

10.Ben-kenobi is an asshole, yup you heard it. So why doesn’t he train Luke in that 19 years hes suppose to look after him? Why doesn’t he tell Luke that he has a sister? And why doesn’t he tell Luke the truth about his father?

11.THE dark side, in the final battle on the darthstar with darth Vader he and Luke do battle, each one trying to bring the other to the dark side or the light side. So Vader tells Lukes that he’s gonna turn his sister if he doesn’t, and so Luke comes out in a fit of rage almost killing Vader. Makes no sense you can use the power of the dark side and not be evil, defeats the purpose of being a Jedi knight since using the dark side is suppose to turn you into a Sith.

12.The Stormtroopers just suck, they can’t hit worth for shit. Yes I know the bad guys are suppose miss when firing at the good guys but still.
    Stormtrooper moments
1.Obi-wan mind trick “You don’t need to see his id”
2.Checking a door “Door’s locked lets move on to the next one” Really? telling me the empire doesn’t have the means to pick a lock?
3.Luke and Leia trapped at the bridge extension part in the darth star. One stormtrooper gets hit but the one beside him falls.
4.Stormtroopers falling… They just look funny falling over!
5.Squad of stormtroopers run into Han/Leia/Luke/Chewie. Han kills one and the rest run off and Han chases them.
6.Endor moon, one stormtrooper(scout) is guarding the door. So Han sneaks behind him and taps the other shoulder and he looks the other way, sees Han and chases him.
7.I’ve said it before Stormtrooper on the deathstar bonks his head on the door.
8.Han and Chewie make it through the blast door closing and a squad of stormtroopers reach it and one says “open the blast doors”

    Any thing else I missed…

      WHAT’S YOUR POINT?
the prequels were very structured, very planned, had a lot of things going for them.
Except for the MAIN CHARACTER. And they were predictable, the whole story was flat. (what was Jango Fett thinking leading Obi-wan straight to the clones, and then leading him, again, straight to his boss’s secret hideout? then again, that plot hole doesn’t matter, because the Jedi Order did NOTHING with the information Obiwan spent the whole movie tracking down. seriously, why the hell did yoda join forces with a bunch of mysterious clones of Jango Fett??)

The ot isn’t pretty, but it’s got it where it counts.

My point is even the OT had flaws just as PT did.

“Except for main character” both main OT & PT characters where predictable dude. Anikan and Luke both whine. LOL

But episode 2 and Jar jar binks was the worst from the PT.

        Cheers!

OT had its shit like PT had.
      What are they?
1.Same crap romance. Let me point it out!
PT the romance between Anikan and Padme, while the OT had the romance between Han and Leia, both where crap!
Only, the Han/Leia story wasn’t crap. It was a minor plot element, a little spice if you will, to a story about greater things. In ‘Attack of the Clones’, the Anakin/Padmé story took a lot of space and that space wasn’t used for anything remotely believable, interesting, or entertaining. It was so bad I feel my bowels loosen at the thought of what we got in that movie.
2.OT had just as bad dialogue has PT had.
There are a few duds in the OT, but the PT consists almost exlusively of duddy language. Whereas most of the OT is eminently quotable, you have to dig deep through the PT for the few good lines of dialogue to quote. Nothing memorable either. Also, the dialogue in the PT often didn’t match the character, was often blatant exposition, and was even used where it didn’t make sense for a character to be spouting it. In many cases, the lines of dialogue did not connect to each other, giving the sense that we were watching people reading from a script, not characters full of life. A lot of the dialogue was delivered monotonously. The attempts at humor backfired almost in all cases of “funny” dialogue.
3.Empires strikes back, Luke chops the arm off the Wompa. Why not kill it and use the cave to keep cover of the cold? Also why did Luke leave Yoda on Dagabah? Why when leaving Hoth they fly right into the fleet of the empire?????
Watching The Empire Strikes Back I never get the sense that it is wise to stay in the Wampa cave; it seems plausible that Luke Skywalker decides to walk back to base, or that he thinks someone will be out looking for him. Luke left Yoda because he had to save his friends, it’s so clearly spelled out I am beginning to worry I am responding to a troll. The Empire had blockaded Hoth, and Han tried to get through the blockade, it was their only chance.
4.How could STONE age creatures defeat the top squad of the empire, with clubs, rocks, and logs? For real…
It’s a thematic story point. Maybe not my favorite, but it’s still a point (or morale if you will); don’t be too proud of your technological terror. Even the smallest can conquer the strongest. Etc. Yes, it didn’t convince, but at least the Ewoks and the Stormtroopers looked real as opposed to, say, the Gungans versus the Battle Droids, a sequence so devoid of life, so uninspired and so unconvincing that entire galaxies mourn its existence on film.
5.Brother and sister kiss not only in episode 4 but in 5 and 6 too.
So what? What does it matter? Not sure Luke and Leia kiss in VI though..
6.Why didn’t Chewie get a freaking medal of bravery like Han and Luke did in episode 4?
He didn’t get a medal, and it didn’t hurt the quality of the film or the story one bit. He wasn’t one of the two heroes, he was a sidekick.
7.Episode 4 in the deathstar a stormtrooper bonks his head on the door!
Yes, one of the technical flaws of the film. Worse, in the prequels, they replicate the mistake as if to make banging your fucking head a genetic heritage from Jango Fett. Now THAT’S fucking stupid.
8.Deathstar ya ya its amazing right? Ok so why could it be taken out with a tiny porthole? Why was the empire taking so much time trying to get back the plans? When the empire should have been doing was finding all the weaknesses.
All right, you’re a troll. But now I am invested in this, dammit. It’s a plot device. The enemy’s great weapon needs a weakness for the plot to resolve. It’s the same plot point used in The Hobbit and countless other stories. At least Luke Skywalker used skill and the Force to successfully launch the torpedo, unlike his father who randomly flew into a space donut.
9.Jabba’s palace with c3-p0 and r2-d2 pass a Gonk droid upside down being tortured and its screaming… why????
It adds a sensory detail, and yes, it’s silly. But it doesn’t take over the scene – or larger chunks of the film – like the silliness in the PT tends to do. There’s a lot of silly stuff going on in Jabba’s Palace (and on Endor) and I think most fans agree that Jedi isn’t as good as the two first films because of this sense of the creator not taking it as seriously as we do. And now I can’t be bothered anymore as I understand you were just fucking around.
