John Williams Was Recording The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer Music Today!

John Willimas

As we reported HERE 3 weeks ago, a very interesting rumor suggested that John Williams is going to record music for The Force Awakens teaser trailer on November 15 in LA. Now there are some new indications that this is indeed the case…

First the film music journalists from ScoringSession.com posted the following tweet, confirming that Williams is indeed in LA and has recorded music for TFA teaser trailer:

Later MakingStarWars shared even more interesting bits about the supposedly music recording:

We had heard in the past that Williams would be composing new cues for a potential teaser trailer premiering this year, possibly with Disney’s Into The Woods. Today, we received several reports about John Williams recording Star Wars cues at a Sony scoring stage. The Maestro is apparently recording the music for the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser. As we’ve mentioned before, we heard the rough edit of the teaser was just a little over a minute long, showing off new characters from the film and culminating with the return of the Falcon to the big screen! We also heard that this rough edit was cut to existing Star Wars cues. The music recorded today was described by one source as a medley.

Really exciting times. As I’ve shared in The Cantina before, I spoke with someone important who saw the trailer but refused to give any details honoring the NDA. Still he mentioned that the teaser is incredible but it’s short. My guess is, it will be just over a minute long and definitely has new footage in it.

Now the big question is when to expect the teaser. The most likely candidates are The Hunger Games (November 21), The Hobbit (December 17) or Into the Woods (December 25). Can’t wait.

John Williams truly is amazing. I’m sure the next few scores will be just as fantastic as his other pieces. I saw the Seattle Symphony Orchestra performance of his movie work, it was great 😀

As much as I’d love to see the teaser come on the 21st how realistic is that given that it’s already next Friday? Do they make decisions/announcements like that so spontaneously? Anyone with knowledge on that field?

Up until last year I worked full time as an editor at a post house cutting tv spots. If the score was recorded today, they could easily have the teaser completed by end of day tomorrow in theory. Seeing as how the piece is not long and its a live orchestra recording, post on the score could be completed at some point tomorrow, then a simple audio layback is needed to complete the teaser. That is of course if the video side of things is ready to go. The question is then distribution. Years ago the trailer would need to be sent out to have prints made to be sent to theaters. In the digital age a file can be made within minutes of the edit being completed. If Disney is going with a online release, you could easily have a teaser up by mid-week. Not sure if trailers are sent on drives with the DCP of movies to theaters, or if they are downloaded from a server at the theater. If the theaters are downloading them, then yes its very possible for this to be attached to the Hunger Games this week. We used to finish a TV spot late in the evening, and it would then start airing nationwide and be online by 10:00am the following day. I am sure the decision of when and where to release the teaser have been made long ago. Even though the score was only recorded today, its still very reasonable and part of the plan to have this out this week. This would not be considered a tight deadline by any means.

thanks for your answer. I don’t doubt the logistical possibility. I only wonder if they would not have already announced it if it’s planned to show it with the Hunger Games?

May be a little soon for Hunger Games. Hobbit 3 is really a no-brainer, much wider reach than Into the Woods.

It should be on the hobbit but I bet it’ll be on into the woods. I used to run a theater and these things are usually studio controlled. However, if I were Disney and if Into The Woods isn’t tracking for a strong opening, I’d swallow my pride and put it on The Hobbit. The end of the era of those movies and the start of the next great epics. It would be poetic and perfect. Still a long way away, but there’s something coming. Probably a teaser poster also. John Williams is equal to Lucas in creating my love for Star Wars. No one else can come close to his staggering genius. Him being involved and Ralph McQuarrie designs being used make me believe in JJ knocking this movie out of the park more than anything else I’ve seen so far. Well, that and the original cast being back. Ok, we all know at this point that this is going to be what we’ve been waiting on 30+ years, right??

I really hope it’s not attached to the Hobbit trailer. That over-stuffed, nonsensical fantasy trilogy needs no more money from geeks. I’ll be glad when it’s over.

If the teaser appears with The hobbit i will pay it for sure…
But then i will walk away without seing the movie.
I’m not interested anymore in Peter Jackson films, a non-sense silly dialogs and cgi orgy without a mínimum of common sense, silly adaptations and full of overactings.

Your´e right! I had so big expectation with The Hobbit. First part was great (Not the bad cgi orc and not the goblin town), but Smaug… couldn´t be worse. So after all these years I won´t be on the midnight opening and won´t buy the blu ray collection – I just can´t watch Desolation again – that stupid it is. 🙁

Everybody probably knows about Willians use of leitmotifs or character themes. There is just no chance of him developing a connection to any character in a minute of random footage. He strongly depended his workflow depending on content. So asking John Williams to compose some generic trailer music is really low. Especially at his age.
But maybe they have a really good communication and only ask him to compose a vague theme on description alone.

That’s not a bad train of thought there. Perhaps he had something little to begin with. I remember twenty years ago he was in a brief interview looking back in hindsight at the time and was asked about Lucas beginning of the next trilogy, and he had mentioned that there were a few minute pieces that could work both in the prequels and the sequels, stating something about the sequels in an “if they are ever made.” With I remembered what show this was on.

I have no idea why but my gut feeling is telling me that they will just release the teaser trailer on Thanksgiving Holiday via Twitter and their official star wars youtube channel. I actually don’t think it will be attached to any movie. They will unleash the Kraken and bam…destroy the internet as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in joy and nerdgasms.

Having worked in audio-post production, I can tell you that recording the score yesterday would allow for a release thanksgiving… Things move more quickly than you might think in the film world… so many things come together at the last moment, lots of all-nighters…

Recording the score means that the trailer is already cut. The only last thing would be adding Audio FX and final mix, but these sessions only take a few days. Maybe the trailer is only score, which would be very cool… and easier to produce.

They did describe this teaser’s music as being a medley, my bet: We’re gonna’ be seeing a revisited rendition of older music with subtle elements of a New Faction Theme (alliance, Jedi, Empire, Sith, Wookie etc.)
    Don’t expect any character themes.
Lucky for them the original music was awesome, so I don’t mind them recycling a bit as long as it’s appropriate for the situation.

Either that or they’re gonna’ have Lana Del Rey sing a depressing version of the Rebellion Celebration Music from ‘New Hope. Or maybe have Ultron sing something.

If he’s recording the teaser now, and it’s using new themes for the upcoming film, then I would assume he’ll start composing and recording the film next month or maybe in January.

John Williams’s score is, for me, one of the only aspects of the PT I enjoy without reservation. I hardly ever re-watch those films, but I can listen to his soundtracks for them endlessly.

The trailer could be a Luke montage from baby to Jedi & then finish with a specially filmed scene of him as a hermit looking out over the ocean in Ireland. I doubt much will be given away in the first trailer.

Literally, I saw exactly what you’re describing exactly two years ago on youtube.

Cantina band doing the Teaser would be SUPER LAME and super done-before. I could whip together a decent clip-show with that Space-Jazz in the background, and I’m a Loser. If that’s what JJ has in store for us it’s gonna’ take me two months to believe it isn’t a prank.

      Really?!

Prequels have some of the best star wars music themes.

”Duel of the fates” is one of the most popular, not only of prequels themes but of star wars themes as a whole.

Also ”Acros the stars” is also very popular.

      Funeral music theme also.

It’s true that there’s less of memorable tunes, but music is still great. ‘The Droid Invasion’ and ‘Augie’s Great Municipal Band’ from Phantom Manace are quite catchy. The former is a happy version of ‘Emperor’s Throne Room’ from Return of the Jedi.
