UPDATE: Star Wars: Episode 7 Title Announcement!
At long last, StarWars.com has announced the title of the new Star Wars film. Henceforth, Star Wars, Episode 7 shall be known as… The Force Awakens.
More after the jump…
The Force Awakens. This may not have been high on the list of speculated titles over the past couple of years the way fan titles like The Ancient Fear were, but personally I think it’s a solid choice. From a stylistic perspective it fits very well with previous Star Wars titles (particularly The Empire Strikes Back) and it certainly fits the whole “rebirth of Star Wars” motif that LFL and Disney have put forth.
Of course, this title raises all sorts of questions, and it gives us some interesting new context for some of the various rumors that have circulated thus far about the film’s plot and characters. Has the Force somehow been “sleeping” all these years? Did Luke not end up passing on what he had learned after all? Or is there perhaps something else on the rise that will change our fundamental view of the Force?
The title is also one of the first pieces of substantial official information about the new film to have been released in quite some time, now. Could the first teaser trailer be that far off? It had been assumed for awhile now that the teaser would be released at Christmas this year, but the latest rumors suggest that it may be released considerably earlier than this. The official Star Wars Twitter account has indicated that principle photography on Episode 7 is now complete. Announcement of the title this morning might be further evidence that release of the trailer could be imminent.
However, the most important thing at the moment is that we now have an official name for the new Star Wars movie!
The Force Awakens. TFA. Discuss…
Thanks to Cantina member, JeffG. for the heads up!
UPDATE:
Graphic artist and fellow Star Wars fan Michael Cohen put together this old-school, ESB-style logo for TFA. Mighty slick and creative job there, Michael!

Thanks to Cantina member, Entourage, for sharing this with us!
The Force Awakens.. hmm.. not sure how I feel about this. Hopefully it grows on me.
Although I didn’t like the Phantom Menace, the title has definitely grown on me. So we’ll see.
I agree. But if the Jedi are gone but for Luke, and are beginning again, it makes sensei. (See what I did there?)
The title is fine, it’s better than some of the other ones. I can see from a marketing point why they wanted Force in the title. personally I love Ancient Fear, it’s a bad ass title, and being such it should be the title of the 2nd film…er I mean 8th.
1. The Force Awakens
2. An Ancient Fear
3. Rise of the Nightsisters or Sith Witches or whatever.
The films should go back to having the force be represented of a supernatural, mystical and omnipotent force, not regulated to some scientific midichlorian crap or jargon about capitalism and free trade markets.
Bring back the mystery of the force, the religion, the magic, the supernatural power that the original trilogy brushed the surface of. Remember the mystery of it in the first, the supernatural horror in the second, the tree and the duel in the clouds. Then the mystical frightening power in the throne room.
That’s The Force we need to see again. All the Jedi wielding lightsabres in massive battles and doing back flips became redundant, the force lost it’s mystery, terror and potency in the prequels.
Hopefully the new trilogy brings back a truly terrifying mystical force, not some technological scientific terror, remember Vader’s line in the Death Star.
Second film is The Shadow Heir.
yes! I agree with this 100%- focus on the Force, and the religion. which this title seems like that’s what its gona be about= stoked!
not impressed.
neither am I….the title suggests that the force somehow went into hibernation after return of the jedi which is completely dumb…I just hope the movie will be better then the title
Like the title. Dislike the typeface and treatment.
got a problem with Herb Lubalin?
I was hoping they’d go back to the old school Star Wars font, like on the classic Empire poster! Oh well, at least it doesn’t have “EPISODE #” bigger than the title, or at all.
And now they’ve updated with a fan version of exactly what I was saying!
Good, not great
And they said Attack of the Clones sucked…
It did
Still does.
Always will.
The only thing it was ever good at was being consistent.
*snort*
consistent at sucking
I’m indifferent to the title.
I more await to see the trailer so that I can get a better understanding and a feel of what’s to come.
Its a title. On its own its just a jumble of words. In a few years time it may be associated with the best Star Wars film ever, or just another mediocre entry. Either way, with no movie to associate alongside it it has no way to be elevated above what it simply is.
Great point of view.
You’re not a padawan anymore, my friend.
😉
Yeah, this is the best approach to take for now. If “The Empire Strikes Back” sucked, nobody would think it was a good title.
A title is only as good as the movie it’s attached to (and whether or not the title makes sense for the movie).
Agreed. The Empire Strikes Back is a pretty awful title to be honest, but most will disagree, because they are attached to the it.
A lot of people in 1980 thought The Empire Strikes Back was an awful title. I remember.
It will be hard to say if it is a good title until I see the movie. But as of now, I think it sounds pretty cool!
The title is not bad not great can’t wait for the movie. Just have to wait and see….
Hate to say it but it’s dumb. (and it sounds very video-game-ish to be honest) Well, we finally have a title with the word ‘force’ in it. Hurray. But ‘awakens’? wtf? It’s the force. It surrounds us and binds the galaxy together. It doesn’t go for a nap! ‘awakens’ ?!? *sigh*. Oh well, I’m just going to interpret ‘awakens’ as some kind of metaphor for something to protect my sanity. Apparently it’s been confirmed with a few sites that there is no ‘episode vii’ in the title at all. Again, completely dumb. I’ll just ignore that if that’s the case because it’s a clear error that they’re ignoring for marketing reasons. As long as it’s there in the actual crawl.
Yes the force is everywhere and surrounds us and binds us, but do you even remember the locations in the original movies? Some places are stronger than others in the force, both light and dark. Dagobah for example, was a place very strong in the force. The cave, even stronger. It could be that the force will awaken much stronger in the galaxy in general because of something or someone we aren’t yet aware of.
The only thing dumb here is calling a title dumb without even knowing the story or having seen the movie. Another case could be that the awakens part isn’t referring to the force being stronger in the galaxy, but stronger or awakening in a person or group of people.
Oh give me a break. That’s like saying “Star Wars Episode vii: The Pixie Sisters Great-aunt Deborah’s Gardener” isn’t a dumb title because we haven’t seen the film so we can’t call it dumb. Ridiculous. It may fit in with the story, but as a title, it is not smart. The force ‘awakens’? Sorry but it’s not smart. Sounds cool. But not smart. Who cares that some places like Dagobah are strong with the dark side of the force. That doesn’t mean the force is asleep. Right, it may fit in with the story cryptically, but it’s not smart to say the force has ‘awoken’
You don’t know, as this film will teach us new stuff about the Force and the Star Wars universe.
While I doubt it, this could even be connected to more than one force. Yes, “The Force” that is signature to star wars, but then we might also have an ancient force that awakens (P.S. would make sense with the rumors of An Ancient Fear as the title). It could even mean that the force suddenly takes a new form (better not be human form lol) and awakens in that sense.
You don’t know yet, but you have your right t your opinion.
Yes…..remember your failure at the cave…..
Sorry but YOU’RE the idiot, because it is an extremely dumb title. Are you that dense or just doing it on purpose. If you ever paid attention to what Yoda said, and what this guy just said. The force is always there. That’s like saying God awakens… you’re a a fucking idiot pal like this piece of shit Abrahms.
The title sounds like some 12-year old dummy just saw “Star Wars” for the first time, then couldn’t WAIT to rush home and start scribbling in his black & white composition notebook some pathetic fanfic with the word “force” in the title, a lightsaber duel every three pages, etc., etc. Jesus, I’m surprised there isn’t a “®” or a “™” in the title, too ….
The title doesn’t entice me like I had hoped….but I think The problem is that roughly 35 years ABY is smack dab in the middle of the Vong crisis….I realize that they aren’t sticking to the original storyline, but I hope they don’t entend to change history. With that said, the timing is right for Leia to finish her training
You’re Such An idiot. Making general assumptions before the movie comes out and knowing more about the film…
Because “Return of the Jedi” and “Revenge of the Sith” and “Attack of the Clones” didn’t all sound corny, right? I swear, some SW fans will find ANYTHING to bitch about.
Hey, look at that! :-O
You’re bitching, too! 😀
Sneaky little bastard! 😉
Revenge of the Sith is the only good title in any of the SW films so far (even though I consider all three prequels to be sub-canonical as films. The only reason ROTS is a good title is because of the reverse symmetry with the original unused title of ROTJ and because of how deeply wrong and deeply right it feels as a result and the built in philosophical implications of that.
…”I consider all three prequels to be sub-canonical as films.”
You do not define cannon. Lucas (and now Lucasfilm/Disney) does. I’m not the biggest fan of the PT either, but I’m not so selfish as to retcon their connonicity.
The Force Awakens! Could it be the true nature of the force has risen? Could the force have found balance with Luke and now this ancient threat has risen. Did Luke feel the force go quiet only for it to rise within him causing him to lose it slightly?
My thoughts exactly. At first I wasn’t crazy about the title. “awakens” sounded kinda generic and sequel-ish. HOWEVER, taken as a whole, “the force awakens” means so much more. They are personifying the force. The force has always had a character of its own in the films, it has its own theme music, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon talk of the ‘will’ of the force. This title taken on its own could be bland, but if the movie delivers on this idea of us finding out more about the nature of the force itself, with both the jedi and the sith awakening to the full potential of just what this is…WOW that is an idea that I could believe would knock a few screws loose…like looking into the vastness of time and space…it makes you crazy.
That SUCKS!!!!!
o well, Phantom Menace sounded stupid at first but doesn’t seem so bad now, it’s actually kinda cool
Maybe this title will just take getting used to
Yay, a cool-sounding title to a sucky movie. Wasn’t expecting to be nostalgic for ’99. 😛
I don’t agree. I think TPM sounds exactly like the kind of movie serial title that this whole thing is an homage to in the first place. Why do you think the FIRST movie is subtitled “Episode IV”?
I saw the announcement on StarWars.com’s Facebook page and I initially didn’t realize it was actually Star Wars VII. It is a very unique name that feels Star Wars and also notes that it is the beginning of a new trilogy.
Attack of the Clones and The Phantom Menace both suck as titles (and as movies). This title is decent in my opinion. Sounds a bit like the title of a SW video game though.
A “little” like a Star Wars video game?
This title has straight-to-dvd cheese dripping all over it.
Sounds like a fan title that doesn’t take into account the mirroring of the titles of the OT and PT. I liked “The Ancient Fear” much better as it fit the others. Now we have A New Hope, The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens.
It would actually make a better title for EP9 as it would fit with Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith. Jedi Return, Sith get Revenge, the Force Awakens. Maybe they are intentionally reversing it?
It’s actually the first time that the title “The Empire Strikes Back” has been mirrored. TPM was stylistically similar to ANH, and the rest of the movies have all been “BLANK of the BLANK”.
Definitive Article + Noun + Verb = V and now VII’s title format
I am not referring to the order of the words, but the themes. Empire “Strikes” – Clones (representing the Republic that will become the Empire) “Attack”.
The Phantom Menace that is Palpatine (and Anakin in the long run) leads to the need for a New Hope (ironically the son of the menace Anakin).
Attacking Clones will make up the forces of the Empire which will Strike Back.
Revenge of Sith leads to the destruction of the Jedi Order which will need to Return.
Yes….but maybe there is NOT an Ancient Fear in this movie…
Why do people like The Ancient Fear? That sounds like a 1980’s action movie. It doesn’t sound star wars at all. Maybe Luke went away and no one in a generation (nearly two with Vader) have known the Force. Remember Han Solo didn’t even believe in it. How many people really knew Luke was a Jedi? This title could make perfect sense, we will find out in 420 or so days.
“The Ancient Fear” sounds like the title of a 1940’s serial, which is what the Star Wars titles are supposed to evoke. “The Force Awakens” is also a fine title in that regard, but I have a small problem with how it doesn’t fit with the rest of the Saga thematically as I already said. I’m not saying The Ancient Fear fits with the theme of EP7 and should be the title, but I am saying it fits the format of the other first titles in the Saga much better. And there is nothing we have heard from the production that says they want to separate the Sequel Trilogy from the previous ones in that way. In fact, they seem to want to evoke the OT especially.
The title makes me speculate the for some reaskn beings wuth force potential havent been arojnd since epeisode 6?
A disturbance in the Pants….
Let the bitching, whining, and complaining begin!
So why don’t you tell us why you like it? Seriously, please tell us. I already said I like it as a title, but it doesn’t fit well with ANH and TPM in theme.
Seriously, please, where does it say the person likes it???
If they don’t like it then they shouldn’t criticize others for saying they don’t like it either.
I think we’re referring to different posts, nevermind
I don’t see any criticizing or liking in the post I’m reading
I am referring to this one. “Let the bitching, whining, and complaining begin!” They are criticizing people for complaining about the title. I challenged them to do the opposite instead of making a comment on how people are reacting. They are clearly trying to be the “cool outsider who doesn’t complain like the stupid nerds do.” Which makes them no better. There is always someone making this comment. Why not actually contribute to the discussion and give their opinion on the actual topic rather than “bitching, whining, and complaining” about people bitching, whining, and complaining.
the post doesn’t say anything about criticizing anyone about anything. it just says “let the bitching, ….”
all of your perceptions are how you interpret the post, you are assuming the person is implying something that isn’t even there
If I say to someone, “stop complaining”, this doesn’t necessarily mean I am criticizing people about their views of some fuckin movie and that I think blah blah blah
I can only assume you are joking or being sarcastic or whatever, which is cool
in the end, no one really gives a shit. its an anonymous post which I would interpret as humor. you interpret it as criticizing someone. in America there is a such thing as freedom of speech. this site is an open forum, no need to get so sensitive and bent out of shape over a humor post
You are clearly the original poster. And you are babbling now. But don’t worry, saying you are babbling isn’t me criticizing or anything.
And by the way, my original response wasn’t actually criticizing [for real this time] the original post. I was simply saying you should contribute to the discussion rather than complain about other people’s opinions. I was criticizing your post stating that the original post wasn’t saying they liked it. I said if that is the case, then they shouldn’t criticize others who have the same opinion. Saying “let the bitching begin” is the equivalent to “FIRST!” It is just a way to make yourself seem above the other geeks. It is an annoying thing to say.
Or bitching whining and complaining about the bitching and whining complainers who are complaining and bitching. Touche’
Sorry, but it does. A menace awakens, a new hero awakens, the Force awakens. Seems a shrewd and well done title to me.
That is a bit of a stretch. But I seriously applaud the effort. I might come to agree once I ponder it a bit…
Let’s see, There is a Phantom (hidden) Menace that destroys the Jedi and unbalances the Force. A New (burgeoning) Hope comes into play that will help to restore balance. After many years of isolation or hibernation after the restoration, the Force finally Awakens, but to what end?…
Yep, that works! Thanks. I was hoping for someone to prove me wrong. I think “The Awakening Force” would have gotten me there sooner.
I still think the word order throws it off a little since the other two were so grammatically similar, but Attack of the Clones and The Empire Strikes Back were also reversed in that way, so not a huge deal.
Thanks again!
so the midichloriwhatsits get corporeal ,armed and start kicking arse for themselves ….. or thats what is sounds like
Man you can tell most people have no background in literature anymore. Have you ever heard of alliteration?
man you can tell most people have no background in taking the p+ss anymore.
Hummm…. I don’t know If I liked or not. And where the hell is the Episode 7 in the logo? :v
Who gives a shit!
Well In the marketing for A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, there was no mention of “episode #”. Sure the number was in the crawl to let you know but the only times EPISODE # was used used on the official posters was for the prequel trilogy. My guess is they just want to get away from that and create a ‘new’ feeling like you can see this movie even without seeing the other 6 first (though obviously you SHOULD! lol). My guess is episode VII will be in the crawl but that will be the only mention of it being a numbered installment. That my guess but I am curious to see. All will become clear when they release the first teaser or poster!
wow, a post with some common fuckin sense for once!
They’ll probably continue the use of the episode numbers in the titles to make them more distinctive from the stand alone films that will come in-between.
Or they may be eliminating episode numbers altogether so that moviegoers will not differentiate between the current series and the stand-alones; just “everything” is Star Wars, so everything makes similar money. This sounds, sadly, like a very Disney thing to do.
There is no way they would risk pissing off fans by not including VII in the crawl. They know how much it means for us to see it. That is the whole reason we are excited because we are getting VII, VIII, and IX. Remember not long ago when the rumor was that there would be no title only a number?
All this negativity shocks me. Nobody has even seen the movie yet. Why not see it first and then cast judgement on how it fits the movie? I can’t figure out how something like this can generate so much negativity though! It’s new F’ing Star Wars people with all of our old characters returning! Must you find something to complain about in everything that comes out of new Star Wars news? Find your inner youth and let go of your anger! SMFH!
For someone like me, I like the title as a stand alone SW title, but I expected it to fit thematically with the other first installments. I never had a problem with Menace or Clones as they fit the theme and sounded like Flash Gordon titles. I don’t get why some people hate it as a SW title by itself. But that has been a tradition since the beginning. Some people didn’t like the Empire or Jedi titles back in the day. Now we have an outlet in the web.
Exactly…. I’m sick of the negative bitching as well..
I’m an original OT fan as well as a fan who loved the prequels as well.. and yes all you negative ones, your hatred for the prequels will not convince me otherwise
It shocks you? Clearly you haven’t spent much time around internet posting Star Wars fans. Negativity and complaining are defining characteristics. I rather enjoy it. After the new title was announced, I couldn’t wait to get online and read the over-reactions. It’s the sort of crazy I don’t get to see much in the real world.
Were just bitter. It’s been rough on us. Blow our collective minds then stomp our guts out with the PT. A little PTSD is to be expected.
My Dong Awakens
No….maybe your lightsaber awakens….lol?
Totally silly thought but it did kind of crossed my mind. After reading the title I thought… well it’s not great but it’s not terrible either. Then it hit me.
My God that’s exactly what could happen with Star Wars. Not bad… but not great. I’m kind of sobered up on the hype at the moment. I just hope it’s good.
I think that the ancient fear is better
Even a handfull of my own titles are far better and this one has also been suggested jokingly by me a long long time ago…
The title isn’t “bad” or “good” until we know the movie. The title might fit the movie more perfectly than we can imagine.
Saying “I have a better title!” or “The Ancient Fear is better!” is silly, because you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE MOVIE. “The Ancient Fear” could have zero connection to the plot, and in that case, it would be an awful title. Save judgement until we know the plot.
The ancient fear is not better if there is not ancient fear jb the mivie
Would’ve preferred something like “The Force Lives On” or “Resurrection of the Force”.
“The Force Awakens” is a little bland.
Wow. Okay, you have the first titles I like better. Of course “The Force Lives On” might not follow the story arc the same.
AHEM, it does not say anywhere that it is the official tiltle, this could just be the “title” for the campaign for ep.VII & the soon to come teaser trailer…
The man has a point. Or they gauge reaction and use that excuse…
There is no reason to believe it isn’t the title. They wouldn’t put it out like that if it wasn’t.
Which side of the force; light or dark?
Maybe the Force awakens, sees its shadow and goes back to bed?
No. The Force awakens, sees it’s shadow and we have 6 more weeks of winter.
Probably more then six weeks of winter since it will only be Dec. 18 🙂
Darth Punxutawney Phil has a nice ring to it.
Goblers Knob Strikes Back
I prefer others but it’s still ok.
The english version always sounds good(although OT titles sounds great in my language ;P)
In Catalan language Episode 7 will be something like:
“El despertar de la força”
i like it 😉
in german it would be called:
“Die Macht Erwacht”
In czech it would be Probuzení Síly. Terrible, terrible…..
And in Norwegian we will be saying “Kraften våkner (opp)” = The Force Wakes (Up), which doesn’t sound very nice, though I otherwise like the title.
Maybe they will go for a slightly less-than-literal translation. “Return of the Jedi” became “Jedi-ridderen vender tilbake” (The Jedi Knight Returns — yeah, the interpreted “Jedi” as being singular here, as if referring to Luke alone).
For VII I think I should prefer a pure noun-phrase “Kraftens oppvåkning” (Awakening of the Force).
Jeg er enig med den andre oversettelse blir bedre navn på filmen
haha, blir väl samma på svenska: kraften vaknar upp” som om det är morgon & den är på väg till jobbet… 😀
In Gungan it will be “Deesa Force-sa Wakey Wakey” 😛
The Force Awakens sounds like someone introduced espresso to Dagobah
Suggests that when the force “reset” in ROTJ and force users were at a all time low, it comes into the forefront again and force sensitives pop up everywhere. It’s not that bad, and foreshadows a new beginning… And new conflicts.
That’s how it goes for titles, you can’t satisfy everyone. Putting down everything has become the new norm these days.
Episode 8 will be called, “Bedtime For Skywalker”.
Episode 8: The force is drowsy
Episode 9: The force falls asleep
the forces takes a nap
I said it should have the word Force in it a few days back in the trailer thread.
I like it…These things grow on you also, trust me.
” Awakened the Force is…Begun the Episode VII Marketing has.. “
I like it. People criticizing…is “A New Hope” really that much better? Maybe instead of bashing the name realize that we are getting a NEW Star Wars movie that has more of a chance of being awesome, than a chance of sucking the big one.
A pretty bad name.
Doesn’t make me say “Wow, awesome!” but also doesn’t make me say “huh? Really?” Even “The Empire Strikes Back” probably sounded weird at first, and I even got used to “Attack of the Clones” after a while.
My foot is gonna awaken in JJ’s ass unless they come up with a better title. Sounds fan fiction to me.
Ive had the feeling that this new trilogy will deal with rebirth and resurrection. Yoda will reincarnate himself in some form. Its very Buddhist.
Haha I actually like it
It would have been cool if they named it The Star Wars
bland title… they played it safe.
MAKING STAR WARS has more spoilers about Luke if you guys are interested…
Safe name for a safe movie. You can’t go safe in the first movie of a trilogy of a old movie series like this.
“Awakeing of the force” would be better.
Good one!
Awakened by the Force?
“Oh, did my force awaken you? I’m sorry my lady” *cheeky little Anakin creeper smile to top it off*
I think we’re missing the bigger picture here. ‘The force awakens’ is also an anagram of ‘Fresh new oatcake’ .. Coincidence? I think not.
Thank you, someone had to say it!
Possibly the most rational post in this comment section. Cheers.
No. Fuck the ancient fear.
I hope it is simply a Jedi mind trick. You can’t ignore the universe already created ….. the Force never slept. Maybe it’s the next level or a long lost art of the Jedi.
Wow. Star Wars fans are really critical.
Wow! Water is really wet.
Wow. My anus is really tingly!
Wow. My proctologist comes highly recommended!
VII is still in the title people! They have hats with VII on them. The Website has VII on the page. VII is not missing. This title treatment isn’t the final design. Its just an announcement design focused on just the name.
I believe someone said this is how they have always done it, without the number at first.
Other than not fitting in with the mirroring themes of the titles of the first films of the OT and PT, I do like it as a Star Wars title. It makes me think of the Force awakening in multiple characters after being dormant or hidden for many, many years.
And given the most resent rumor on maingstarwars.net, this fits well with what might have happened with Luke.
Ha. The clue to my turn around on this title was right there in my own statement: “It makes me think of the Force awakening in multiple characters after being dormant or “HIDDEN” for many, many years.” I have always described “Phantom” as “hidden” and “New” as “arising” or “burgeoning”, so Awakens actually fits.
Though “Force” doesn’t fit as well with “Hope” and “Menace”, unless Force was referring to “a force” – as in military force – rather than “The” Force. A Hope – A Menace – A Force.
So the force was asleep for the first 6 movies? Gotcha!!
No, between 6 and 7.
Between 1983 and 2015…
“It was a new spring day on Endor. The Wookies were gathering figs and space berries, the Ewoks were in the trees collecting mynock honey, and the force had just awakened from a long winter’s nap…”
Hold on kids. Nobody else picking up on the Blue Harvest strategy here? They can lead with The Force Awakens throughout the trailers and even merchandise then next summer with a new extended trailer they can deliver the big news… The real name.
I am off to put a bet on it!
There is nothing to “pick up on” Blue Harvest was never given as the title in publicity. That was to hide that they were filming Star Wars. The title isn’t changing. This is the official reveal.
Back in the day yes but how many sweatshops will now go into ripoff mode following this news.
This way they can just pull the rug from under them.
But we will see in the next few weeks if this looks probable with the teaser and official mentions.
TPM
AOTC
ROTS
ANH
TESB
ROTJ
TFA
VII going with tradition. Every first movie in a trilogy begins with a 3 word title.
As I said before, they are breaking tradition as they aren’t keeping with a mirror of theme. New Hope – Phantom Menace – Force Awakens? It fits with ROTJ and ROTS as far as theme goes. And that is more important than how many words it has. The Ancient Fear works better for the mirroring of themes and fits the three word thing.
The only way this could still work as a mirror is if the titles of the ST will be reversed as a sort of bookend. So Episode 9 would have to mirror a “New Hope” and “Phantom Menace”.
Disagree. Try thinking of the the first film in each trilogy as setting the stage for the entire trilogy…
Phantom Menace begins the story of Palpatine and Anakin, and the ultimate destruction of the Republic.
New Hope begins the story of Luke and the gang, the rebellion, the redemption of Anakin and the fall of the Empire.
Perhaps Force Awakens begins the story of the restoration of the galaxy to a prior state of being, before the Republic, before the Empire.
Who’s to say for certain, but don’t neglect that this is the beginning of the third act in this saga (each trilogy being an act), not the seventh.
None of that changes the fact that the first, second, and third film titles in the OT and PT mirrored each other. This one does not mirror New Hope and Phantom Menace. I’m not saying it doesn’t fit the theme of EP7; it does from what we have heard recently, but it does break the mirroring and throws off the rhythm for me.
Ok for II-V and III-VI, but Could someone explain me the mirroring between A New Hope and The Phantom Menace? I don’t get it.
I fully agree. There’s no correlation there that couldn’t also fit with The Force Awakens.
Maybe Lucasfilm isn’t so crazy about mirroring things as Lucas was, especially when they likely have BIG long-term plans for the series while Lucas was just trying to copy some of the OT’s shine.
Now I know why they didn’t put the Episode VII in the name: to make more money. The people who sees the name and don’t know Star Wars will think it’s the first installment. But it sounds like a reboot to me.
Agreed, The ancien fear was better but this one is not that bad either. Every SW title has to be kind of cheesy. ^^
Who came up with this? Abrams’ children? It’s really simplistic
I would have gone with A Forced Hero. pun intended.
It’s possible that it could still change. ROTJ started as Revenge of the Jedi. I really couldn’t care less about the name. It’s the first teaser/trailer that I’m looking forward too.
Do you know anything about Star Wars? Honestly, how could you listen to Duel of The Fates and say, this sucks. That is one of the best musical compositions to come out of the prequel trilogies. Stop being a hater.
Whip cream on shit is still shit, everything about the prequels sucked including the music.
I actually really like it. I think we can expect the force itself, or at least the main character’s views and uses regarding it, to change quite dramatically.
Absolutely love the title! First Episode 7 is not in the title so it hearkens back to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Love linking it to the OT vs the PT garbage. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the start of something cool folks! May the Force be with you…always.
Give us your pick, then. Let’s see if it is better.
No kidding, he probably wanted:
“The Return of Vader to Battle Yoda While speaking to Obi-Wan’s ghost”
This. Is. So. Wizard.

‘The Force Awakens’
Okay, so not only are my hopes up for a teaser trailer (fingers crossed), but I’m also a fan of this title. It reflects what this movie is about beyond the plot. The Star Wars franchise is going through a rebirth, and this film will be its first major step in that. To have a title about the force (franchise) awakening (rebirth) is suiting.
I’m also excited that the word ‘force’ is in the title. It is another piece of evidence that they are trying to go back to what the originals were about. It’s good that the title isn’t ‘The Epic Lightsaber Battle’ or something like that.
Oh, it’s not bad. All of the SW titles are supposed to be a little cheesy, evoking the Commander Cody serials of the 30’s.
As others have said, remember how we all reacted to “The Phantom Menace?” And it actually fit the story. “The Ancient Fear” sounds nifty, but does it fit the story?
Besides, have we forgotten that the Force was clouded to the Jedi in the PT and through the time of the OT, it was difficult to see? Perhaps after Anakin restored balance, the Force is getting back to where it should be.
Great title.
Force Awakens suggests that story is going to explode and really take off as a narrative. I think it’s bold and is a strong sign of intent.
The Ancient Fear would only work if it is relevant to the story. ..
great movies need relevant titles not ones that sound cool.
Patience, I’m optimistic.
Personally I find the title interesting, as if the Force’s true powers have yet to be shown.
Now this what I was thinking. The force wakes up and goes BLAM!!!
It’s a bit bland as far as star wars titles go. But from what we’ve heard about lukes powers it’s an appropriate title.
I expect a force unleashed kind of movie. It doesn’t quit ro of the tongue yet. But give it time.
People are acting as if the previous titles were so incredibly complex in their own right. Take a look at “A New Hope”, “The Empire Strikes Back”… Not that special. Iconic and nostalgic however? Quite. But only after when people got familiar with the actual movies they belong to.
The title, as fresh as it is, still needs to ring a bell or strike a chord. We’ve still got some time to go until it does.
Darth Punxutawney Phil has a nice ring to it.
Im hoping they discredit the whole Midiclorian thing. I never liked the Force having a scientific explanation. I think The Force is beyond science and the fact its being awaken might lead to new understandings of it.
Ive waited a long time for this moment
I can’t help but think of Ewan mcGregor nodding off while listening to yoda ramble on in one of those boring Jedi temple scenes. a bit of drool on his chin and a snort and he perks up.
This is troll bait right? I mean even the worst hater of EP1 or even Star Wars in general could NOT possibly listen to Dual of the Fates and think it “stinks”? Seriously?
“The official Star Wars Twitter account has indicated that principle photography on Episode 7 is now complete.”
That’s principal photography, not principle.
Damn right! It’s the principle of it. We all gotta learn to speak proper English.
LOL to people who dont like the name. Ok well you have a right to your opinion, but you do realize there is ZERO way for you to put the name of the movie in context right?
I am more apt to trust the people who have spent the last 2 years shaping the movie into a finished product, who actually KNOW THE STORY, the plot, for not only this movie but the next 2, to make an intelligent decision on the title.
If JJ and the team feel this is the best name, I trust it will be; even if right now its just kind of ‘meh’. For all we know in the actual context of the story arc for the next 3 movies “The Ancient Fear” would have been a totally absurd name.
They could have still come up with a name that keeps the mirroring of Hope and Menace and still kept to the theme of EP7. Something like “The Rising Force” would have fit a little better.
This fits pretty well with the other titles, so I can’t complain. Regardless, a title doesn’t define a movie. Let’s not get too carried away here.
Shhhhhhh the Force is sleeping!… *baby crying*… Oh shit, too late.
Mabye the force have awoken to tell us that its NOT freaking metaclorians that is the force, but some other force. The force has awaken to sett things strait!!
I don´t know why everybody is mumbling about the title so much. When I first saw Empire Strikes Back, I didn´t like that title, but loved the movie, and I came to like the title after a couple of years. We have to wait for the movie to associate it to the title first. Stop chattering about nonsense!!!
I for one like the title. Do I think The Ancient Fear is a better sounding title, yes, but not knowing what the plot is about this title works for me. I care more about the movie and story than the title anyways. The Phantom Menace is a good title, bad movie. Attack of the Clones is a bad title, and really bad movie.
If we had no knowledge of previous SW titles and this film was called “a new hope” we’d all be complaining about the simplicity and cheese factor. As others have said it seems like a set up for the ST as a whole. It’s just a title. What really matters is the plot and script.
I would have preferred an “Article Adjective Noun”-type title, to reflect the other first episode of each previous trilogy (how about “The Awakened Force,” or “The Rising Force,” or something like that that still conveys the same message?). I wonder if this was Lucas’ title or Kennedy et al. changed it.
I remember The Empire Strikes Back just made me think of baseball when I was a kid. I didn’t get it.
Ha, ha, yes, totally agree, I was about 6 years old when ESB came out and didn’t know what “Empire” meant, the closest word I had heard to that was “Umpire”, and strikes were also from baseball…
It amazes me that people think a specific title would be better when they don’t even know what the movie is about yet.
I love the title. Look the force hasn’t exactly been a hot topic in the universe since the Jedi fell. In fact as far as the universe was concerned only the Emperor and Darth Vader still had the force and even then it was played down as some old hokey religion. Even many in the empire had little to no respect for the force. Vader was the only one who actually used it on a regular basis.
After Return of the Jedi I don’t imagine there was a massive rebirth of believers in the force. Since most force sensitive people were killed off it is probably pretty difficult for Luke to find people to train. I also imagine his skill set still isn’t very popular among the people after getting duped about the Jedi and then dealing with the Emperor for so many years. I’m sure many still have either a massive distrust of the force and those who can use it or still don’t even remember what it is or was. Even during the prequels it wasn’t as if everybody openly embraced the force with love and affection. That was one of the reasons how the Emperor destroyed the Jedi. He played politics and demonized them. He played on the fears and distrust many had of the Jedi and their “unfair” mystical powers.
The force has had a pretty bad rap for a very long time and to me this title represents how the universe may finally be excepting the force once again. It could also mean that since most adults with the force were killed off it took a generation for new force sensitive people to be born.
Luke is a one man operation with 0 resources to help find force sensitive people. It isn’t like he has a Craigslist to just post a looking for force sensitive people listing. I’m pretty sure what little government they have been able to setup wouldn’t really give a darn about training new Jedi’s either. I would think most of the universe is more concerned about setting up a functioning government or dealing with other issues than spreading a basically dead religion.
Well put. The title does refer to that the force had been on the decline ever since TPM. The order died, Luke got rid of the Sith (for the time being),indeed, as far as the galaxy was concerned, the force was extinct. The majority of the Empire still existed after the battle of Endor. There were other priorities. The Rebellion still had a long war to fight.
That the force awakens again is an omen that means both good and bad news. Things get set in motion that results in an explosion of force knowledge and force sensitives. That includes the dark side. And the pure greater potential of it. By now Luke must have surpassed Anakin’s supposed potential before he got burned to a crisp, as was suggested by Palpatine when he fought Yoda. Luke is a Skywalker, his knowledge of the force should be without equal.
The title suggests what happens; That the force after having been neglected for decades is propelled back into the galaxy with a bang, in ways we may have not seen before.
I hope the gunslingers will have their time to shine in the coming trilogy, though.
I have a feeling that the gunslingers will get their well-deserved due. Unless we’re completely wrong about all of this, there really won’t be a ton of Jedi running around in TFA the way there were throughout the PT. I think there will probably be a decent balance again between Force users and non Force users in the ST, at least for awhile.
Excellent post!
Yeah, I think that we’e looking at a scenario where Luke didn’t just leap right back in and start rebuilding the Jedi Order the way he did in the novels. By the time of the OT, “their fire had gone out of the universe” and I suspect that Luke, for whatever reason, simply never rekindled it by training a new generation of Jedi.
And Force sensitives across the galaxy probably didn’t bother looking for a teacher either. As you say, though the Empire was gone and the Emperor’s decree that Jedi were enemies of the state was no longer operative, there probably still wasn’t a great deal of eagerness on the part of the galactic populace to bring the Jedi back. They’d been conditioned by the Empire for so long to think of Jedi as a threat that it probably took much longer for that attitude to wear off than for the Empire itself to be overthrown.
But, what causes Force users to begin resurfacing? That could get very interesting indeed. (And no, I’m not following spoilers, deliberately, so this question may already have been partially answered for some of y’all.) ;^)
The Force Awakens is fine. It’s far better than The Phantom Anus for sure, and it’s certainly at least as good as The Ancient Fear or whatever people have been calling it. Anybody that disagrees can make like a weak-minded Stormtrooper and move along.
I think we are referring to different posts.
I see no criticizing or liking in the post I’m reading
We’ve already got TPM to tell us that Midi-chlorians are not the Force, but some people just weren’t paying attention.
STAR WARS: AWAKENING OF THE FORCE? may have been better?
Duel of the Fates was maybe the best thing about TPM. The score was good, better as the movie, no doubt.
I like it. It harkens back to the days of when the Original Trilogy was released when Titles were emphasized. People simply knew it by their names, not by Ep 1, 2 ,3 , etc….
Look at the original poster releases:
SW: http://www.cvltnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/star-wars-iv-a-new-hope-poster1.jpg
ESB: http://www.empireonline.com/features/rerelease-movie-posters/6.asp
ROTJ: https://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/12/A70-6050
Then you see where it started going wrong with the emphasis on Episode numbers and not the Title:
http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/star-wars-episode-1-poster.jpg
http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/star-wars-episode-2-poster.jpg
http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/star-wars-episode-3-poster.jpg
This is a return to the old way of releasing movies by Title, and just stick in the Episode # in the yellow opening crawl. That’s good enough for me.
Star Wars: The One Without George Lucas Involved
I’m sure it will be quoted many a time a gentleman wakes up with a morning glory!!
Most of you don’t get it! all the titles for every film are cheesy because they are rooted in the pulp sci fi serials like flash gorden which star wars pays tribute to.
Secondly the prequels broke tradition by including the number sequence in them because fox pandered to today’s dumbed down audience thinking know one would know they were prequels! God bless JJ for taking us back to tradition with it just being plain star wars and a subtitle! I for one dig the title!!! My only hope is we get a cool retro logo like the empire strikes back one! Now that would ram it home… Today was a great day to be a fan… Teaser soon I hope. MTFBWY.
Ask, and ye shall receive. Check out the fan-made logo I just updated the post to include.
;^)
As I posted earlier I thought the name was just “meh”..but I supported the choice since I know nothing of the movies plot or story.
That being said, as I have read press releases today, the name actually sounds really good in print. And the more you read it, see it, hear it the better it gets.
I think its a name that will stick and will be easily recognizable. If I asked 20 people if they had seen The Phantom Menace, half of them would probably say “huh?” I think The Force Awakens will not have this problem.
Can people please stop comparing the title to the prequel titles as I’d to think those don’t exist. Just compare to the OT thanks!
Star Wars Episode VII: The Fanboys are Shaken
Don’t like it.
or
Star Wars 7:Awaken The Force
an imperative…
??
Has it occurred to anyone besides me that they’re pulling one over on us all and that the word “Force” could be referring to something other that THE Force? Like, maybe some secret sleeper army? It would make sense as a new threat that’s finally ready to go on the offense after laying low in the 30 years since having its butt handed to it in ROTJ. Just a thought…
Lord Vader can you hear me?
Been a Star Wars fan since 1977 and I do like the title. All you geeks that don’t like it need to move out of their mommys house, get laid, and get a life. It’s just a name people! The actual movie is what we should care about, n
Honestly, with the retooling of the script and a lot of episode 7 ideas being pushed back to later installments which focus more on the new heroes, I would be 0% surprised if the leaked rumors of “An ancient fear” actually turned out to be Episode 8’s title. Of course a lot could change between now and then.
Don’t mind the title much, but that font absolutely has to go.
The font is actually very classic Star Trek movies. Go and look
Since when is this going to be a Star Trek movie?
Episode VIII: The Force Has a Few Drinks and Passes Back Out.
Star Wars IX: The Force Gets High
The Ancient Fear was an abysmal title and it’s absolutely for the best that it was a working title and nothing more.
The Force Awakens is abysmal.
It sounds like a title to a Television Episode. Its rather cheesy.
Every title to previous installments were strong, even ATOC. ATF is even bad as an abbreviation. Black and orange R2 unit was my least appreciated think in Star Wars, and now we got that X wing too!! Abysmal is definitely a good word for it as well
If the Force Awakens then everything Obi Wan said about the Force holding and binding things together as a living thing is wrong.
The Force never sleeps!
How does it lay dormant if Luke has learned to move mountains.
Star Wars: Episode VII – Now You’re Playing with Power; SUPER Power
They just copied “The Force Unleashed” !!!
Good call!
Thank you.
A new hope or Empire Strikes Back are not overwhelmingly good titles until you have the context of the film to corelate them to. Personally, I am suprised by it, I like it, and it even gave me goose bumps because the film to me now is even more mysterious.
Obi Wan said it was an energy field. Not Yoda. Just an fyi
Why not just “The Force”… I’d like that, simple and pregnant…. And why not, when you’re at it, rename all the other films: Menace, Clones, Revenge, Hope, The Empire, Return
Clones!
Boy am I glad you’re not the one making decisions for the franchise.
I guess I’m eating my own words… I had thought a title was at least 7 or so months away.
I’m indifferent to the title. It does sound a little weak for VII’s grand re-entrance… but I’ll let the film handle that part. If the film’s good I could give 2 shits what the title is.
That being said though it could grow on me.
It’s very gimmicky and smacks of a marketing slogan instead to regenerate interest on the franchise. Remember, Disney ain’t making Star Wars to appease the die-hards. They are making Star Wars to make a shitl
The title logically should imply that the force as a “concept” awakens within the general awareness of the galaxy as it resurfaces again, when new force sensitives and lost knowledge starts coming out of the woodworks after many decades. It’s not that hard to wrap your head around.
If people think the title says the force IS a sentient being, then i guess they’re just reading from a literal point of view. Which i assume wasn’t the intention of those who thought it up…
It’s very gimmicky and smacks of a marketing slogan instead to regenerate interest in the franchise. Remember, Disney ain’t making Star Wars to appease the die-hards. They are making Star Wars to make a shitload of cash and they’ll squeeze every cent out they can. Personally, it’s bland, unoriginal and I don’t like it at all.
I’d like to say the title is very simplistic compared to the other JJ flick with a subtitle. The only other one.
Ifit was a nod to TF Unleashed, sounds like Luke’s role is as mangnanimous as Starkiller’s in terms of power. Of course, no one knows if those rumors are true. What Making Star Wars say now about Luke sounds a lot more believable compared to the cyborg rumors. I just wonder about the greater evil? It has to be more than just a single guy in a red helmet.
Maybe “The Force Awakens” is an homage to “A New Hope” where the title symbolizes a group of new characters consciously awakening to the reality of the Force, thus “taking their first step into a larger world” and becoming “the new hope” for the galaxy – the rebirth of the Jedi Order and everything it symbolizes.
The Force itself remains the same.
It’s true. Also, books with bad covers are usually terrible.
I can’t help it, I like the title! In fact it is deeply intriguing. I feel we now have a good hint about what this movie will be about.
In fact, when I reflected on possible ways to carry on the story after the seemingly “conclusive” Ep 6, I arrived at the conviction that the only thing left to do was to start delving into the nature of the Force itself.
So far the Force has been seemingly dormant and almost entirely passive except when “used” — just an “energy field”. Yet occasionally we hear about the Force having a “will”. It is not mere energy. It can have purpose, and so has a kind of consciousness.
When I groped around for a new villain that would NOT be a let-down following Palpatine and Vader, the idea that presented itself to me was this: What if the Dark Side is _waking up_ as an angry god, stirred and provoked by the downfall of the Emperor that channeled it? What if the stars are trembling and space itself is shivering and cracking?
Since we are dealing with a vast cosmic force here, an interval of thirty-or-so years is of no consequence. It is but an instant in the big scheme of things.
And maybe the light side similarly “wakes up”?
If so everything is cranked up to a totally new level. We are talking apocalypic potential here! We are entering a territory even Lovecraft would dread to enter! We are talking about opposing forces that can literally tear the entire galaxy apart, leaving the question of how tiny human beings can possibly make a difference anymore.
Don’t expect everything to be resolved before Ep 9, but personally I should very much like to see what happens in the Galaxy when THE FORCE AWAKENS!
I am quite exited by the title, actually. It has a very nice subtext of “yeah, there have been these six episodes, and maybe you even think you know quite a bit about the Force by now, but trust us — YOU AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET!”
God, this sounds so dumb. What’s next, the galaxy is the next main villain?
Something along these lines…I’m wondering if the baddie isn’t going to be a resurrected Vader of sorts…Vader in body only. The spirit driving this body could be the dark side itself, using the most powerful host it could find.
This way they don’t have to try to come up with a villain as iconic as Vader which is no easy task. Then the possible mystery plot devices could be used. Luke tormented by seeing his “father” return. Rumors about Vader coming back. The unassuming audience left wondering if it really is Vader or not. Big reveal at the end that it really wasn’t him. Etc etc.
I don’t know. Sounds kinda cheap and I hope they prove me wrong with a new villain that can stand next to Vader and Palps.
Maybe I’m not as jaded as most of you, but I like it. The title opens up the possibility of something new. A good way to kickstart the new trilogy.
I don’t like the name. It sounds grandiose and mellow dramatic. I’d prefer if it had no star wars specific words (like ep 4 and 5) though I guess I don’t care for the OT movie names either. I also didn’t like the ancient fear but I do like AN ancient fear or, better yet An Ancient Threat.
So you like An Ancient Threat, even though you don’t if there even IS an ancient threat in the film?
True. If a film lacked any ancient threat and was called “an ancient threat” I would no longer like the title “an ancient threat” for that film though I would prefer it to The Ancient Fear. To me “The Force Awakens” has the pseudo poetic vagueness that I would expect from the Twilight films. Then again I often like films whose titles I’m not interested and I’m certainly still psyched to see this..
The one thing that rubs me weird is the fact that “The Force Awakens”follows “Return of the Jedi.” A Jedi needs the force, therefore I believe the force has already awoken.
Well I heard The Force Awakens is not the title ! it actually is :
Star Wars Episode VII : We will bitch & moan no matter what the title is .
Can we do a Force For (name) Change campaign?
There still plenty of time.
THE TEASER IS HERE 🙂 http://youtu.be/GCjK4YTRLI8
I lol’d.
I don’t like that name. Sounds too melodramati and cheesy…just like the PM.
Still have high hopes for the movie though.
I HATE HATE HATE it ….
It sounds cheap, commercial & *ahem* forced.
Well, you guys wanted JJA. You got ‘im.
Bleccheroo.
I like the thoughts it makes one think of. is it talking about Luke having new phenomenal powers – to snap star destroyers in half and lift Xwings from swamps? Is it talking about Leia – and her developing force sensitivity? Is it talking about new characters – their children or padawans? is it talking about force ghosts returning to physical state? Is it talking about the darkside? maybe the wording is a lot less adult than “the ancient fear”, but I like what sort of film it may lead to.
Phenomenal cosmic powers!
Helps when you see it in perspective

STAR WARS titles has always just been a description of what will happen in the movie, so it really doesn’t matter if it’s a good title or not, what matters is: what does this mean & what will we see in the movie?
The prequels were mediocre, but not complete shit, they got a majority of positive reviews: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/search/?search=star+wars
The dark side is stronger with trolls like you, Palpatine is proud! (sarcasm off)
Agreed the Pre-quels were NOT total shit. 3 factors make them barely watchable:
1- Horrible script, fuck you Lucas.
2- Jar Jar dinks, fuck you Lucas.
3- Hayden Christianson. Though he is an average actor at best I still have not figured out if his outright horrible acting in the PT is all him or if #1 had a lot to do with it….
Two things happenin here:
1. Luke is in solitude
2. Adam Driver is collecting relics to awaken some force power on his own, since Uncle Luke is in hiding and won’t teach him.
The force is awoken.
GO AHEAD HATERSTROLLS, give us your stupid titles to see how good they are, we’re going to laugh for sure! The title is fine, is not worse than “A New Hope”, among others.
They could only come up with one: an ancient fear
(because for some reason they seem positive Pleaguis is the villain?)
So f’ing cheezy, give it a rest guys… lolz.
This sounds too much like Balance of the Force. An Episode 7 Fan Fic put out many years ago.
Someone mentioned on another site the title literally describes what happens in these movies. Shouldn’t the name of the movie be, The Force Renewed or The Master Recovers or Restoration of the Master/Force? Luke is a Jedi Master at this point, no? They can’t use the word Return again. But this means no repeating the word Jedi or Sith in Episode 8 and 9’s titles and I doubt they could shoot themselves in the foot that way.
Does anyone know what the rating will be? My seven-year-old will be incredibly disappointed if it’s PG-13…
Why would he be disappointed?
I would be disappointed in my parents if I was 7 and couldn’t see a movie I wanted to see because it was rated PG-13.
You can’t judge the title. Well i guess you can but you’d be foolish to do so without knowing the story or plot first. I for one really like it and has got me asking even more questions.
Has anyone considered that the title is referring to the dark side? After Darth Vader and the Emperor were defeated in ROTJ, the dark side was no longer represented by a physical being. For new Sith enemie(s) to rise without someone to pass on the knowledge, the dark side of the force would have to take the matter into it’s own ‘hands’, and create a new Sith using it’s own will. Since the defeat in ROTJ, the dark side has been metephorically ‘sleeping’, but now it’s time to awaken!
Or to put it another way, the force has ‘realised’ it is no longer in balance, and has to awaken to recreate a dark side representative?
Here’s the biggest problem I see here:
It’s not “EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS”
It’s just “The Force Awakens”
Therefore, they’re breaking the uniform style that they had chosen for the previous six movies.
And thus we have Episodes I to VI, then three “random” movies, which are supposed to be the sequels, but they have names that make them SOUND LIKE SPIN-OFFS… and then we have the three ACTUAL SPIN-OFFS, which will have a common naming convention with those movies that should have been called Episodes VII, VIII and IX, and all six of these will be separated from Episodes I to VI.
All in all, a HUGE MESS.
apart from the first movie didn’t use episode 4 when it came out, and empire and Jedi only used numbers on the crawls, not the film names on marketing. Only the prequels stuck to the episode 1,2,3 heavily in the promotional naming – probably to help people know they are prequels.
Goddamnit.
I recall back in the 90s the main promotional sweep for what is now the OT was “Star Wars” panning away to an explosion, then “The Empire Strikes Back” panning in and then flipped to reveal “Return of the Jedi”. No mention of the episode numbers.
And lets face it, with the ‘popular view’ of the PT in general it might be a good idea to avoid the numbering that was so heavily emphasised for those films.
The “episode VII” part isn’t gone… as another forum member pointed out other films pre-release posters debuted without the episode numbers… when you go to the theater I’d expect to see title with number included.
Correct. I was referencing the promotional material of the OT & PT back in the day.
Better? How do you know? You have not seen the movie. If there is no ancient fear in the movie than it would be a stupid title
I think the movie should have been called an ancient fear weather the title has anything to do with the movie or not. That’s brillient
Dumbass.
This fits in with my theory that Luke will be the embodiment of both the light AND the dark. It will drive him to be tormented.
There are two types of titles. Iffy and Shtty.
An Iffy title may seem strange at first, maybe even off putting, then becomes ok in time as it is used in language and text.
A Shtty title is just a bad title. Regardless of how much people try to justify and explain it,… it’s always going to be a shtty title.
It’s up to you to decide which is which.
Ehh.. I give it a 7/10, I don’t care about the titles anyway.
Adam Driver finds the black book of the force while on a dig down on tattooine and reads from the sith chapter of the undead and awakens the spirit of Darth Vader without the presence of Annie Skywalker. Under the suit is nothing but energy, no body. He gathers his strength by hunting down all force sensitives and assimilates their organs and fluids and in doing so will regenerate and no longer be the undead but a plague upon the galaxy.
I love it. I freaking hope the force awakens because I want to see more force using.
My bet is the Force Awakens refers to the overall force-user levels.
Think about this, in the OT, Yoda, Ben, Luke, Anakin and Sheev Palpatine (and maybe Leia) were the ONLY force-users in the Galaxy, so we’re led to believe. 5 FORCE-USERS world total.
Even with the Empire’s extermination of the Jedi, based on Palpatine’s desperation to get Luke on the Dark Side shows that there are few Jedi to begin with. Otherwise Palpy would just find another force-using loser that ISN’T OBI-WAN’S APPRENTICE.
This to me suggests that with the Rise of the Sith-pire, the force tangibly withdrew from the galaxy, resulting in a dramatic drop in kids born with jedi potential.
the Force Awakens is possibly a tremendous title.
The Force Awakening means that now, after Palpatine and his weirdness is gone, the force is more open to the hands of mortal people, thus a whole generation of Jedi/Sith kids is born. Fast-forward thirty years and these kids are adults. This poses huge possibilities for both the Light Side and the Dark Side.
BOOM : there’s your sequel writing itself.
For SW movie titles to fit with those of the OT I think they need to feel like a caption from a good silent movie. That is to say that they clarify and emphasize the action on the screen in a way that’s as terse as possible (If the action is clear and compelling why waste screen time with the vague and unnecessary). Whether that’s the case for this film will, of course, depend on the content of the story
Let’s admit it…ALL of the titles to Star Wars movies are pretty crappy. Therefore titles are irrelevant. It’s the movies that are important. If it was called: ‘THE AWESOME MEGA-TASTIC-NESS WITH GUARANTEED HUGE EXPLOSIONS AND HAN DOES SOMETHING COOL!!!!’ Then people would complain.
Ardnt / JJA / Kasdan / LFL etc will never win approval with the title whichever one they choose. To be honest, I don’t think they can win with the movie either, considering the outcry from the title release.
However, I am not expecting my world to be rocked Dec 18, 2015, I just want to be entertained. So it’s AFTER I see the movie…That’s when I’ll judge, and I am optimistic. The title will do.
Couldnt agree more. The anti JJ / Disney peeps are going to knock everything one way or the other. Expect tons and tons of bitching about the movie no matter how good it is. The bitching about the title alone proves it.
For me, I just need 2 things: 1 – be better than the PT. 2 – let me see the big 3 on the big screen together again. The 2nd is guaranteed and the first to me is almost certain. JJ has never made a movie I didnt like. He’s made movies i thought were just “ok”, but considering some of the shit Hollywood puts out these days “ok” is good enough for my money.
It’s growing on me, especially after seeing that mock-up by Michael Cohen.
It’s better than A New Hope and the prequel titles but not quite as cool as Return Of The Jedi or The Empire Strikes Back.
This Is, Great!!!
Looks like the concencus is thumbs down.
The only who like it are saying “it isn’t bad” rather than “iit’s good”. Very telling, that.
It is still better than iPadCary
Sounds good to me. You can go all kinda ways with this one.
I dont care what any of you say…the title is dumb. you would think they would find a way better name for the most anticipated sequel of ALL TIME……
I like it! I can hear the opening music.. 🙂
“I have a bad feeling about this”….
seriously. with this stupid fucking title and these latest leaked stories about Lukes death… i have completely lost interest. gg’s starwarsnewsnet.com…. what a bummer…had high hopes for this..o well…lata!
Were you dropped on your head a lot as a baby?
You all got it wrong! According to the logo the title is STAR THE FORCE AWAKENS WARS 😉
I love this title, man. Seriously. I love how it rolls off the tongue, very profound.
i’ll wait to judge the name till i find out it’s meaning.
Never mind after sleeping on it I’m no longer indifferent… I dig the title.
I like it, it’s not the best name, but hey it’s NEW STAR WARS!! and I love all things Star Wars.
All?
I just hope the force doesn’t awaken that damned stay puft marshmallow man!!! That would suck…
LMAO @ Darth Bacon. 🙂

I perfectly get why fans complain so much. We’re very passionate about something we care deeply about. Many of us were disappointed with a number of the films in the franchise, and we want to make sure VII is the best movie it can be, especially since the original cast is back.
We’re going through some painful adjustments here, which causes a lot of bitching and moaning online. Expectations not being met, etc. And I’m sure many of us will still do that for any number of things we see in VII. However, I think most of us will eventually come to accept this movie for what it is and enjoy it.
I have to admit. I wanted a badass title. This isn’t even close. “Awakens” is a terrible word in this context. The force doesn’t go away and it can’t wake up. I swear to god, the rules of the SW universe aren’t that hard to grasp. Why can’t professional fucking story tellers understand the mythos of Star Wars? And killing off Luke over Han is just bad goddamn writing. Fucking terrible. I was so optimistic until recently. And the dumb font? Come on. Get serious. This is not the way anyone imagined this thing being updated. I’m hoping the recent rumors about Luke being killed is BS and I’m refusing to read rumors anymore.
LOL dude put the pot pipe down and give the few remaining brain cells you have left a break.
Who made you the Professor of The Force? Do you know more about it than Lucas? I think “Awakens” is awesome in any movie title really. Its a powerful verb that gets the juices flowing and can be used in so many different contexts.
The Force can certainly be “awakened”. For something to awaken it doesnt have to be gone, or asleep, it can be dormant, or even barely active but still active. Evil is often referred to as being “awakened”. You have read a few books or seen a few other movies right? Evil is always present, but when its used in the context of awakening it is growing and become self aware in so much as it is feeding itself to become something of greater power.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY no way for anyone to know if Luke dies in VII. No one except the people who actually were on the sets. So stop fucking belly aching about something you have no idea if it even happens. Besides what is Luke to you? You have a weird man crush on him? The original three have to make room for the new kids at some point, so why cant Luke die?
If your sooooo disapointed and disgusted, why not leave the site? Life is too short man. Go outside, ride a bike, or a fat chic, whatever, just get out of the basement.
Wasn`t there a news story recently which said the Force would be different in this movie – it would`nt just be confined to the Jedi/Sith,and that it would be far more widespread – I would`ve thought “The Force Awakens” backs this story up.
Han solo will probably sacrifce himself im the end making him a hero but before he dies he stares at the screne breaking the fourth wall smirks and says “i shot first ” before he dies..
God, no please.
At least it didn’t make me cringe like The Phantom Dennis the Menace or Attack of the Clowns.
And in the fan logo the top bar needs to be part of the “F”.
Star Wars: The Third Eye of the Force Awakens Unto Blissful Enlightenment
BUDDHA TRI-FORCE: NIBBANNA!!!!! õ:D
I tried liking the title but it still
felt boring to me.
And no poster art??
No wow I got to see this movie poster?
Just something plain.
I get the feeling this is going to be a remake.
Don’t like the title.
The Phantom Menace = Palpatine / Anakin
A New Hope = Luke / Leia
The Force Awakens ????
Your question marks says it all. You know what the other titles referred to so you can put them in context.
I thought the Phantom Menace was a horrible name until I saw the movie. Then thought the name was pretty good, the movie, not so much..
How can you DISLIKE a title when you dont understand what it means?
The Phantom Menace: Palpatine / Anakin
A New Hope: Luke / Leia
The Force Awakens: John Boyega / Daisy Ridley
When you see the movie it’ll make sense
The Force Awakens: Daisy Ridley / ?
Are they going to change the concept of the force as well
The force awakens in someone or does something or becomes something?
I think that’s why so many dislike it
not enough storyline or info to back it up.
If this movie title explains it then I think it will be the Force that is out of balance
and Luke has to be brought back to fix it.
The Force gets all wacky throughout the galaxy and weird things start happening.
Hence the search for Luke to make things right again.
Am I close ?
(By the way somehow the postings got messed up}
I’m so tired of people telling other people what to like or not like for a movie title
it’s okay.
Whatever happened to freedom of opinion on
forums?
If people don’t like a title its not the end of the world.
Maybe it will grow on them who knows
Time will tell if this movie will be a hit or a miss for many.
The Force Awakens is abysmal.
It sounds like a title to a Television Episode. Its rather cheesy.
Every title to previous installments were strong, even ATOC. TFA is even bad as an abbreviation. Black and orange R2 unit was my least appreciated think in Star Wars, and now we got that X wing too!! Abysmal is definitely a good word for it as well
Can’t be any worse than the life day special
Lumpy is way better than that title.
The Conjuring of the Force
The Gyre of Dispair
The Will of the Force
The Atonement of a Jedi
The Sith Reckoning
The Gathering of Legions
The Hidden Fate
Or my favorite: Lumpy Kicks Butt
The Caravan of Courage
Ewok Adventure!!
And people think the new title is bad?
Its kind of growing on me.
Maybe they will bring back Ewoks too
and update the look.
A forced romance between Boyega and Ridley per Mr. Grey. Oh boy. What next? Confirmation of the blue green screen alien played by Andy Serkis as being Jar-Jar? I hope not.
What do you mean by forced?
Nooooooooooooooo!
Not JarJar in the new ones.
Ewoks maybe
JarJar no way.
Please no Binks .It will make the movie look like nothing but a remake now.
(Just looked for other sources and Andy Serkis denies the rumour.)
Jar Jar does make a cameo in this film, but from a distance, he looks at the point of view of the audience and whisps his head across his shoulder, scoffing at the audience. Just like he did in ATOC.
People really need to let the Jar Jar Bink’s thing go, its been over 15 years.
With editing software at its finest I hope Disney markets a Star Wars Editor App free with downloads so people can make their own master edits.
We don’t have to let anything go. If something continues to suck, we’ll continue to hate.
Funny how Boyega is rumored to play a TIE pilot and is Ridley’s love interest in the new movie and in the old EU Jagged Fel was a TIE pilot and the Solo daughter’s love interest as well. How many more parallels?
After seeing the Forest Of Dean photos
and actors in dark cloaks .
I think it will be more like Jedi Academy stories.
So Force Awakens might be about a whole lot of kids awakening to the force inside them??
Got to sell to the kids today.
Been thinking about the symbolism of Vader and how its rumored to be a huge influence on the new film. The idea of someone impersonating Vader does not sound good at all. Adam Driver is the Sith artifiact collecting Dark Jedi, or the secret Sith apprentice to the reawakened ancient evil. Who is so obsessed with Vader he wants to become him. Literally.
Driver already makes adjustments to his body and its almost entirely cyborg but we can’t see it since he is living a double life of sorts. Possibly 2 lives – secretly the elder Solo son or brother of Ridley or a royal figurehead sympathizing family loyal to the Republic/Alliance to restore the Republic. He upgrades his body whenever a new tragedy occurs in his life as some sort of weird reminder of his pain.
Much rather prefer a whole new character in a life support suit like Darth Malgus than Driver trying to become Vader.
