X-Wings the way I always dreamed of seeing them….

Absolutely no? plot given away though? Storm Troopers, droid, Girl in Dessert, X-Wings, Bad guy, Falcon. That’s about what they gave out, and unless you’re read some spoilers, nothing can really be nade of it

Completely agree, funny thing is, I think more is given away, even with how little was said with the narrator of the teaser. It was more who said it and how it was said. Andy Serkis has been confirmed as the voice. While nothing will be confirmed until they really want us to know. Serkis is widely known for playing non human roles. The narrator of the teaser definitely comes off as the new Sith Master(Guessing Darth Plagueis) speaking to his apprentice. The Sith with the claymore lightsaber is very likely the apprentice. While that is all pure speculation it does fit in with what we already know about the Star Wars universe and would make for a really good start for a new trilogy.

Actually these are different xwings than ep 4. theyve got the one engine on either side, (not 2) that splits when in attack position. and the one wing on each side splits, the back goes up, the front half goes down. the nose is different, sleeker. pretty killer looking

Yeah, I had problems all (European) afternoon as well, but I assumed this was due to sheer overload!

The trailer: Of course we would have liked glimpses of Han, Luke and Leia, but that big reveal is probably reserved for a later trailer. I am happy with what I saw!

Boyega in Stormtrooper uniform popping up in the desert: Wow, the VERY first official glimpse we EVER had of ANY character in the fabled Sequel Trilogy! I don’t believe he is a bad guy (or will remain a bad guy), despite the uniform.

What is that sound we hear? Sounds like the coded transmission from the Imperial droid that once located the base on Hoth!

Ball droid: Really cute and funny to watch. Hope (s)he and R2 will get along! Heck, maybe this is R2’s new love interest!

Stormtroopers: Yeah, those “upgraded” helmets work really well. These guys look more sinister than classical stormtroopers. Nice sense of urge and menace as they ready their weapons and prepare to leave the ship carrying them!

DAISY !!! That one-and-a-half second is all we are going to see of your character for many long months, and yet I love her already! Wish I knew her name! “Kira” would be excellent, but I try not to get too attached to it, in case it is wrong. Is this the new Leia? She certainly has the potential, it seems. What is the story, why the sense of urgency, why does she have to hurry home or wherever?

And look at her ride! It is supercool because of its complete and utter LACK of elegance! Gonk droid aesthetics applied to a speeder! Wow !!!

X-wings sweeping across the water! Yes! Is that you piloting one of them, Oscar? It must be said that the character looks somewhat cold and cynical, even if there are Rebel symbols on his uniform. Could this signal that the old, simplistic, oh-so-very-clear distinction between good and evil is breaking down? Is Boyega’s “stormtrooper” really a good guy, and this “Rebel” NOT necessarily a good guy? Now that would be interesting, hm?

And then we enter what seems like classical fantasy. A dark, hooded figure in a sinister wood or whatever, brandishing not a lightsaber but a “light-broadsword”! The scene almost has Lord of the Rings-like feel to it. And you can take that as a compliment, Mr. Abrams!

“The dark side of the Force … and the LIGHT!” Yeah, the FALCON! Finally back on the big screen, and now brought to life with 21st-century effects! Look at those loops! Oops, look out for that TIE fighter!

And yeah, the Falcon now does have a square antenna, since the round one was lost during the escape from the second Death Star! Excellent attention to detail!

So yes, I am happy. If I had been told beforehand that none of the Big Three would appear, I would have said that this trailer was going to be a disappointment. But having seen it, I don’t really miss Han, Luke and Leia. Their older selves will be revealed in due time, and in the meantime we have had a most interesting glimpse of THE FORCE AWAKENS!

I second that motion! Feww god this trailer gave me a good start to the day. The bit of a reveal of how the rest f the storm trooper armour looks is interesting, a flush back with only one hole on the left, like on the helmet, less angles to the armour and more smooth shapes, I like this film already!

After looking at that falcon frame-by-frame to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind at the fact that it could… possibly be?? An ACTUAL!… PHYSICAL MODEL!!??

Just looking at the details and some of the ‘imperfections’ of this model as it is about to pass the TIE fighters… I there was something rather odd about this ‘CGI’ model… it didnt really look like any other CGI model I’d seen numerous times in dozens and dozens of films… I’m always pointing out to my siblings ‘Yep thats CGI… thats real but that bit there is fake… blah blah blah” It’s just the way the computer renders the light bouncing off the model… you have to really know what your looking for but I always see the computer rendered lighting…

But this…I’d never seen such great physical animation work since Star Trek Next Gen’s Movies! (I’m so sorry to bring up trek here!) But in those movies I could just tell what were physical models and what was CGI (yes I am aware that the CGI is 20 years old)… but even so the physical model ones are STUNNING! Just like the falcon in this Teaser…

            In J.J we trust!

I think it’s CG because the movements it does are quite crazy. I’m not aware such camera movements are possible to do, specially when the model flips. But a possibility is that the model was hold by a blue piece in front of it (the part that we don’t see at any frame), which was making it roll while the camera travels in and out.

Oh, guess what? I’m so pleased to be discussing if this is CG or not 🙂 This is the Star Wars I was waiting for

I agree with everything in this post, with the addition that I love the JJ-ish immediacy that the footage brings – it’s quite different from the Lucas/Kershner fairy-tale-ishness. And the initial narrator – is that a digital blend of Sir Pat and Bumbershoot?! And I don’t recognize the ‘dark side and LIGHT’ voice…perhaps Sydow? Someone else? I’ll have to go listen again…

Anyway, consider me another squee-ing fangirl. Well done. 🙂

He voiced that one Captain Haddock in TinTin, I did not like Tintin, but Andy was superb, nay, UNRECOGNIZABLE. He’s got chops. I have no clue whether or not that was his voice in the teaser, it didn’t sound like him, but it probably is.

and btw, he voiced every Orc in the Two Towers sequence when the orcs make camp with Merry and Pippin in tow. They had multiple actors playing the orcs. The Witch-king and the pale, warg-riding general in Return of the King were both done by the same guy (NOT Andy Serkis).

IDK about Andy, I can’t really tell if he’s a great actor in direct-live-action, (maybe we’ll see in Avengers 2) but his CG characters work. He basically invented Gollum and Ceasar the Ape, behavior-wise. He’s not talent-less. I don’t think they could have got Just Anybody to do his job.
He is good at what he does. Peter Jackson wanted to get Oscar Nominated, so he’s doing something right.

Yes, the cross guard actually has a star wars wiki page I guess its not new. But it makes a lot of practicle sense to me what stops anyone from just slidding down someones blade and cutting off their hand? Real world swords all mostly have cross guards, to protect the users hand. I personally love this move, its always kind of bothered me, it seems it would be extremley easy to attack and cut off your opponants hands. Also love the look of the blades themselves.

I don’t have a big issue with the look. The fighting style of the individual who uses it will be the big thin IMO.

Just one of those issues that has become a spark point for fan rage. Kind of amusing to see it unfold.

honestly – a crossguard does make sense but not implemented like that. You could still slide down the blade and chop the crossguard off. Personally i think it would look more elegant without it – but hell – the movie is going to get so awesome i can take a weird lightsaber

Disney is going to milk this cash cow for every dime they can. With that said Revan to me has always made sense. Almost all KotoR canon involves him to some degree and for all we know he is still being kept alive. or is alive. As for not using the EU as canon that mostly was due rewriting the storyline to some degree after ROTJ. Anything before epi6 is game to draw from.

Actually even most of pre RoTJ media was discarded (Except for the new SWTOR expansion). Note all the material marked as “Legends” now. The only two books I know of that have been released with canon status so far are Tarkin and the one with the Star Wars Rebels characters. The idea is that everything released from this point forward is considered canon, the rest released previously isnt.

Somehow I doubt Abrams has it in him to create something as horrible as Jar Jar. This’ll just be another droid. If it’s a focus, he’ll be the attempt at the next R2. If it’s just scenery, he’ll be nothing more than the equivalent to a mouse droid.

Lucas had very little to do with this film, so I don’t think we really need to worry about this being “a kid’s film”.

I doubt Abrams is going to try to copy Star Wars, but I’m sure his overall goal is what made Star Wars great. A movie for all ages.

The sand planet scenes have the old trilogy look but are also fresh. The lightsaber is new and awesome and the crossguard HAS a practical use, and awesome is the dark look of the sith scene. The droid is NOT CGI and i love it, the design of the speeder is illuminated, old, classical and new at the same time. The scenes with Daisy and Boyega have such a right feel. The composition and the acting reminds me of some Alfred Hitchcock movie. A 2015 Star Wars movie with a new and old look at the same time.
The only frames where I perceive a sort of cgi look is the one with the x-wings.

Crossguards make sense for a traditional sword, not a lightsaber. If he caught an opponents blade there, they would be able to easily slice through his hilt and disable the main blade.

Your credentials are, of course, lightsaber construction expert. We have no idea what that hilt is made from nor if a lightsaber could actually swipe through it. Maybe it has a magnetic shield on the hilt to divert hits to the lightsaber-part? We shall see…

We’ve seen a lot of lightsabers been cut in half. Unless this one guy managed to find enough lightsaber resistant metal to make a hilt out of, and we have no evidence that he did/it is, we have to go on the assumption that it can be destroyed just as any other can.

Nice quip by the way, you certainly aren’t being a hypocrite by trying to rationalize with assertions of technology that doesn’t even exist within the star wars universe.

The fact that the crossguard isn’t entirely made of this and turns into a light saber blade suggests that the saber blade is indeed better.

I don’t think this is a normal lightsaber along the classic notion as the weapon of a Jedi. Two things of note from that brief Sith scene.
            1. Everyone notices the difference in it’s sound compared to to the former, in fact it sounds almost identical if not so to the Emperors Force Lightning.
            2. Perhaps it’s no coincidence the Sith stamps his/her foot aggressively right as the weapon ignites. Perhaps the weapon only activates when the character empowers it with anger. Let’s call it a Force Sword, not created by mechanics which power a light beam focused from a special crystal but instead anger, hate, attitude power the crystal and produce a force sensitive blade, similar to the Emperor’s Lightning. Therefore could the bearer be channeling their emotion through the weapon, an old ancient way and weapon long forgotten.

No, i’m not serious. Mainly making fun of how people pick apart the smallest thing.

My goofy comment did make me curious as to the statistics, though. Turns out women do have smaller width hands relative to men for a given height, but only by a relatively small amount and not something you can determine here (or for any one individual rather than statistically). With someone as tall as Gwendoline Christie around, you certainly can’t rule it out.

    Overall, I’m excited about this!

Unfortunately, seeing Boyega as Stormtrooper and the crossed blade, confirms that many spoilers around are indeed true, which means that we know too much.

    The X-wing shot is mindblowing.

Seeing so much open-air shots looking real (not like kashyyyk in III) is good news.

I’m not a fan of the millenium falcon shot.

Listen to it, Boyega is chased by an imperial droid!

Is that Benedict’s voice? I really think he’s in StarWars since that interview beside Harrison.

Love Daisy Ridley, can’t wait for more.

I really thought the crossed bladed was a fan-made and always laughed about it. Looks better than expected, but yet a bit ridiculous to me.

The “ball droid” is kinda funny, although I don’t get how it works!

I am thinking the same thing. We were intentionally shown very little. I can see JJ only giving us some innocuous shots to energize the fans yet put something light and dark in it, just like the narration. Little heavy content balanced with a little levity. I am 42. My mother laughed at that, as did my boys age 9, 12 and 14. I didn’t laugh and wrote it off to one of the small things in the movie. We could well have just expierienced half of the total screen time that droid in the movie.

I feel that the Lightsaber is going to be archaic. A relic. I truly love the feel of the Sith marching in the darkness. How he/she ignites the Saber with their whole body practically. So as perrymoon said, this confirms a lot of the stuff we already know and it scares me.

This means we will possibly have the floating hand after the crawl. :shakes head:

I was afraid of that lightsaber being real, and now I just wish it were a fan picture. It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from a fan film and not a big production from a guy like JJ who should know better than to put it in to service the fanboys.

That soccer ball droid? Disintegrate it! It’s too cutesy and has the possibility of being annoying in a Jar-Jar way. What’s wrong with R2 and 3PO? Are they not good enough for comic relief anymore?

I like Boyega and Ridley and the Falcon, X-Wings and Stormtroopers but the rest just made me worry.

I’ll still be there opening night but I’m a little weary of this one. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes so high.

The PT was terrible, the OT is awesome and maybe the ST will just be meh. I mean it can’t be WORSE than the PT, right?

Too much fan service is not a good thing and I’m afraid this will be fan service overload – the stupid lightsaber is proof positive of that.

My take on the ball droid (since some are already annoying me with it’s Jar Jar juxtaposition)

It’s on the same planet obviously as Daisy… Perhaps, if she’s a chip of the old proverbial block… She’s created the droid herself, to do recon. We get a sense that she’s jumping on that speeder to search something (possibly a downed ship?)

    Perhaps it’s Boyega?

And she sends in her little rolling friend, that’s small, and practical to do recon?

Seems logical, and fitting with the OT concepts. Almost mercenary like.

Looks to me like she was heading into the station not away, and looked behind at something she wanted to get away from. everything else looks very intriguing, droid will be ok if it provides light relief sparingly, love the way the sith stomps and lights up the saber. Don’t thinks it’s a new design, looks and sounds grizzly, ancient? Makes you wonder what else we’ve been reading about is true…

C’mon that Falcon vs Tie frame was all we needed, brought goosebumps and tears to my eyes…you know that in there Han and Chewie are arguing with each other which is awesome!! The X-wing shot was visually stunning so was the woodland shot of the sith who liked someone said was walking with a purpose instead of strolling in the park like we are used too…not a fan of the new lightsaber design but I can live with it…must be one badass to wield such a thing…and lets hope Luke is at the end of that forest to greet him 😉

I believe the sith had just finished off a fight and was walking away.. almost like he was pissed off that whoever he was fighting fell down somewhere and disappeared… or so he thought. Only to come up behind him… He senses it and pulls that relic saber again.

  • November 28, 2014 at 8:54 pm
    Permalink

A couple of comments. 1st, that sith is not Luke. Watch again and pat attention to the cloak he is wearing, it is moth ridden and faded and torn. 2nd, although yes the crossbar has a practical purpose its purpose here is two fold. 1, to look old, which it does and second. All swords with the cross bar evoke the image of a cross. This is done on purpose. The force awakens because an ancient sith is awakened. 2nd, the words awaken appear next to two characters, the sith and Boyega. Something causes a Sith Lord to rise, the force, and the force it would seem brings Boyega back to life after his ship crashes. Therefore Boyega searches out Luke to be trained to stop the Sith. Why the Sith has the cross symbol is unclear. The most obvious is redemption, but whose, and why. Nothing is done by accident. Also, my prediction. Boyega dies. Maybe not in 7, but he dies

Aras, scroll up to my earlier comment. I think Daisy’s character created the rolling droid for recon. Think about it. Boyega goes down int he desert… He’s being chased. She jumps on her speeder. Then comes a rolling, small droid past the camera. (Perhaps she’s spying on the lost/lone Storm Trooper?)

I think the Light Saber is a relic. Some have mentioned Darth Bane, etc. Whomever this “awakened” character is, could they somehow have kept a saber from say, the age of the Old Republic? Recall in the books (if you’ve read any) how insane some Sith are about ancient artifacts, etc. Would seem fitting…

    • November 29, 2014 at 5:29 am
      Permalink

I’m thinking it’s an R3 unit? I don’t think any of these scenes are related to each other in that way.

To me it looks like Boyega was in a craft that crash landed or something… it looks like he got up from being knocked out possibly?

The relic idea does sound interesting… though I’m thinking it’s an extension of the character himself (like if He’s a wraith-ish being or something like that).

Looking back @ the leaked concept art… I see multiple red light sabers in fog… so there may be lots of sith 🙂

One thing is for sure… this makes Age of Ultron look like a turd in comparison… & all we saw was a villain’s back!

Lord Adrass: JJ has chosen his hooks but those hooks have not hooked me. Straight up. Agree. Disagree. No matter. An arousal is hardly blowing one’s “load”. As mentioned, this is pitched at the new generation mainly, but it would have been great to even get so much of a glimpse of L,L, or H.

the shaky cam and lensflare did my head in a bit , the saber just looked like a self disemboweling waiting to happen …. the fifadroid15 (thats what im calling it) i liked and so did my kids. i like the falcon doing a handbreak turn , but not as much as the one round a cloud in empire. i like the xwings and ties (but i have reservations about spacecraft being used in atmosphere , thats just me). i liked boyegas intro …. but that probably wont play out how i want it to (funny line about “where the hell am i” …or “what just happened”) …… anyway….it isnt representative of what we will get , and no shots of space …. thats odd…. mustnt have done any yet.

I believe this trailer captures everything that makes Star Wars great. Its mysterious and gives plenty of speculation to the plot. The sith are indeed a huge part of the movie. Its pointing toward there being a new threat in the Galaxy. Stormtroopers looked awesome just like the leaked concept drawings. New look for the X-Wing pilots. The Falcon made the best appearance you cld hope for. It was my Star Wars! Bravo Disney for salvaging my childhood!

I am a true OT fan. I appreciate what Lucas tried to do with the PT, but in many ways; he failed the Star Wars community. I don’t believe, in any way; this film is making that same mistake. As one already mentioned. We are mere weeks from shooting being wrapped. We are given a small portion out of LOYALTY… JJ, Disney, Star Wars, doesn’t owe us SHIT. And yet, within weeks of filming being finished, and over a year away from the finished product being put out… We have a trailer. An intriguing trailer. And some of our OT friends, are already up to their old antics. You see LITERALLY two seconds of a droid rolling, and you leap to Jar Jar Binks. The Falcon in it’s three or four second clip (a year away from it’s finished product) and it’s TOO CGI. The Lightsaber (which you know literally, NOTHING about) isn’t practical.

Fuck you. Fuck all of you.

    Sincerely,

Star Wars Fans & your friend, Lord Adrass.

    my thoughts:

1 )I hoped I’d dig the new stormtrooper design once I actually see it on screen, unfortunately it didn’t happen, too futuristic and slick for me

    2) X-Wings are beautiful, the new pilot helmet is awful

    3) I dig the droid, looks really fantastic. Lucas couldn’t come up with the “past” version of R2’s in the prequels so he maintained the original one and JJ’s team took a gamble and redesigned it but geez, have they succeeded!

    4) Boyega and Daisy scenes look good, can’t complain.

    5) New lightsaber is cool, I like it.

    6) I hate the sound of the stormtrooper guns, I mean what the #^&$# they have no sounds when they power up this is @#@^ madness, come on!

    7) A little bit too much CGI for my taste, but this is an extremely early teaser so they get a pass from me on that here.

What about if the voice over is Sith ghost Darth Bane talking to other Sith ghosts in a dark side etheral meeting and when he mentions the light side we cut to a force ghost Yoda in on ‘the meeting’ with a look of growing fear on his face. Thus meaning the awakening is so bad the ancient sith & jedi are all worried about the threat.

You people making the comments about the ball droid and and saber are morons. You’re basing your opinion off of what? “It’s too cheezy” … Update, the OT is filled with cheese you goon. I personally believe the Ball Droid is Daisy’s recon droid. Small, compact, quick, maneuverable. I think she’s (in the clip) racing to find the downed ship (Boyega’s) and since he’s obviously a Storm Trooper, she uses this droid instead of marching in herself… (logical)

As for the Sabre, as myself, and other have already mentioned, I believe this is a relic. An ancient artifact, perhaps even from the Knights of the Old Republic era. Which fits the concept of something “awakening…”

Some have speculated that based on the Darth Bane books, that some how his spirit has passed on, that Driver has some how found remains, etc; and part of those remains is this ancient Saber.

Shut the fuck up and enjoy.

    Here’s my breakdown:

The Voice: Max von Sydow, my guess would be as an ancient Sith, either Bane or Plaguis, would love to see Plaguis. Ancient Sith Spirit would be what I want to see.

Boyega Scene: He has either ran away from the Empire or just woke up from a battle or a crash. And without a doubt that is a probe droid audio at the end of his clip.

Ball Droid: Ridley’s droid. Based off of the rumors we have heard about her we could assume it is a little mechanic, a minature R2 if you will, that can fit into small tight places and do work. According to the rumors she runs a scrap yard or is a scavenger. It would only fit her character to have a droid that can help her scavenge. Plus look at the video beyond the droid, there’s a fence, pod racer engine, and other scrap parts. Most likely the droid is there in a scrap yard.

Stormtroopers: The stormtrooper who seems to be in the focus of the shot seems to be “A little short to be a stormtrooper.” Could this be Boyega? My guess is yes, this scene will probly be in the beginning of the film before he deserts or the ship wrecks.

Daisy’s scene: It reminds me of Luke’s scene in ANH when he rushes off when he realizes the stormtroopers were headed to his Uncle’s farm. So she is rushing to stop someone OR she is running away from someone.

X-Wings; LOVE LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOVE!!!! My guess is this is the new Rogue Squadron. And the planet is Moraband since it is obviously not Tatooine.

The SIth: He is marching away, and yes, HE, clothes tatered, he has been through a changing process. I’ll assume this is the first time we see him ignite the blade. I think Driver’s character will have just come in contact with a Sith spirit and become “possessed” by the spirit when he senses someone, luke? coming to stop him. Ancient lightsaber, hasn’t been ignited for years, this explains the fluxating blade.

DA FALCON: First off, NEW RADAR DISH!!!! Rectangle not a circle, engaging the TIEs over Tatooine, maybe apart of the first battle where Boyega gets seperated or deserts….

All in all, I love it! I like the lightsaber design, and the droid. All we can do is wait and see and just sit back and enjoy!

We never thought we would get to see more Star Wars, so to me this is all a bonus!!

Something i was thinking when i saw the saber was the way it sounds and looks (little fuzzy/buzzy feel) it might be because it is a VERY old saber. If the original sabers were based on swords this could have been a very early saber that was built by one of the founding sith. It would be nice to me if maybe he got it from the grave of a dead sith (and maybe revans mask?). It could lead to so much backstory/EU content. The story could branch out to tell the story of the begining of the sith order and possibly bring legends characters into the story. I have seen a lot of complaints about the saber and a lot of people saying it’s not practical but I have a feeling that once you see him using it in ep 7 it will make more sense.

    • November 29, 2014 at 5:11 am
      Permalink

Ok I usually don’t go for EU stuff but that’s actually a very interesting idea of the light saber being ancient/unstable. I’m thinking more along the lines that he’s a wraith who has a weapon that’s corrupted by himself in some way… sort of like the swords from the nazgul in LOTR. I guess we’ll see.

At a guess, it opens with a big Rebel V’s Empire battle and the Falcon is fighting for the rebels, but Han and Chewie are not the pilots. The two Ties come very close to the falcon, maybe one clips and that Boyega’s crash? So the Falcon starts the whole chain of events…..

    Mates….

This Teaser Trailer was perfect made. First of all, reunites maybe all leaks. We can now be sure that all the leaks were planed.

This is the movie we always wanted to see. And it’s beautiful, the only thing I quite don’t like is the new bad ass lightsaber, it’s like an Excalibur type of sword (very George Lucas style) but I don’t like the way it turns on you know… it’s like BANG! not growing until the tip of the sword like always lightsaber went on in the OT or PT, it also reminded me The Force Unleashed that scene with the bad guy… i don’t know… the snow… how the guy moved… the lightsaber…

I loved the first scene of the teaser!!! the film aspect is so 70s……. Perfect made. I couldn’t believe it. And Boyega’s coming to you with John Williams sucking you’re soul with that first punch… It surely did awaken. oh man…. we’re back… this is the time that all star wars fans were waiting for…

In Daisy’s scene she makes a movement very particular, it reminded me Luke in ROJ during the Endor Speeder Bike sequence. I’m sure she saw that sequence 1000 times. I don’t know if this have something in common.

I just want to know when a longer trailer is gonna came out. What a Grateful Day!

    @liespana

The new “soccer ball R2” it’s cute, it’s cool I thought would be a little different because of the photos leaked.

First of all let me say, beforfe I say anything else:

I AM SO GLAD TO BE %$#%$# ALIVE SO I CAN WITNESS THIS DAY AND AGE WHERE FILMS I HAVE GROWN UP WITH CONTINUE TO LIVE!!!!

Ok now that I got this out of me here is my take on the trailer

    1) Amazing narrator voice, I don’t care whose is it. JJ Abrams is an unholy mastermind of anticipation and manipulation!

2)The music made me freeze. You-know-who has done it again!

    3) When I saw the Falcon I saw two different eras harmoniously speaking to me. JJ just got the old feeling and the CGI right. Perfect. Pure gold.

4)When I saw the X-Wings my faith in cinematography was restored. Awesome screen capturing, everything was perfect.

    5) The dark force user scene was well-handlded. Could have been better but there’s not so much you can do in a few seconds.
The lightsaber looked new, weird and therefore has to prove its place in the Galaxy. I think JJ can handle it though. Still did you see that the laser beam the saber emanates is sort of unstable somehow? Or supercharged maybe? Great work, added mystrery in saber making methods here I think!

    6) The ball-droid will have to do more than just roll around to impress the older viewers but again I think that JJ would have thought this through before introducing this one to the SW family.
CGI or live action I don’t care- it’s enough that it looks well-made. It was a good marketing choice to intorduce it here in this heavy and sentimental environment than later on. Now we can take it more seriously.

7)John looks good in strooper armor. Good acting as well. Good to know he is taking it seriously.

    8) Daisy looks really cute and innosent in her survival gear. She really brings the new blood feeling we all so much have talked about. She looks well suited for the purposes listed above. Still she will have to prove her place just as everyone will.

The entire thing seems to be very dark and ominous. It tries to send the message that it is not done in the merry-way the sequel trilogy progressed. Star Wars has become real and it means bussiness, that’s the message here.

Only hickup: Where are my oldies? Where is Han, Leia and Luke? This trailer was a perfectly made cake without srinkles!! I so missed them in the trailer! Totally biter-sweeted the entire thing!

This trailer is 95% of everything i hoped for. Thank you Disney!

JJ Abrams, thank you. The Force is strong in you!!!

He’s not starring, but it is a chance for him to get in there (along with all the other JJ cronies.) Plus, do you think JJ would risk having another actor sound so close to Cumberbatch (which would confuse people) over having them create a different kind of voice? That, and they probably haven’t even begun actual ADR yet with the actors.

YES!! Serkis playing an awakened Plagueis has been my biggest wish for this movie since those articles some time back. Seriously, who else could top Sidious as a the ultimate evil other than his own master? It just seems logical to me. My guess if this is the case would be that Plagueis is the dark lord and Driver’s character is his new apprentice and enforcer.

My guess exactly. Andy Serkis mo-cap character is Plagueis. The sith in the trailer is his new apprentice. If you read the book Darth Plagueis, he experimented with death and bringing beings back to life / immortality. Hence he is the dark side of the force that awakens.

The Sith could be Driver in the way he has slim almost awkward movement before the sabre ignites but the power in the weapon seems out of control. Maybe his power is new and uncontrolled at this point and becomes apparent in the blade?

Great teaser. Very happy with it. I noticed that everything that was shown (with the exeption of Oscar Isaac) has already been seen in the leaks we’ve had. I wonder if that shaped the decision of what they included? After all, if we’ve already seen these things then it leaves all the other stuff in the mystery box. Maybe the leaks were intentional as JJ knew we would see it all in the teaser anyway?

I wonder whether these new movies will continue the struggle between the dark and light side of the force. There seems no need for a repeat story of falling the dark side and being redeemed.

Perhaps there will be a new threat. And the characters both dark, light and those of both persuasions have to deal with this. The story of idealistic split between light and dark has already being covered.

My take so far is that “The Force awakens – the dark side and the light, have you felt it?” does not sound like animosity between those two side. It sounds like one side is addressing the other.

What else do I take from the trailer – the Tie Fighters are still shooting at the Falcon. The new R2D2 can now bounce down stairs rather than wobble or be cut out.

Didn’t they do that to death in like, EVERY X-Men movie (except the original and Wolverine)?
Why can’t they just have – you know – A VILLAIN?
Why can’t the bad-guys (the Sith) be evil? They already made Vampires (who were originally metaphoric of the Anti-Chirst incarnate) into “misunderstood teenagers who aren’t all that bad”. Please, oh please don’t ruin the Sith.

Wait, I think I’m overreacting a bit, but the sith ARE supposed to be evil. Just saying, making them team up with the Jedi kinda’ deadens/cheapens the ENTIRE POINT OF THE PREVIOUS SAGA

They can have villains of course. But supposedly balance was brought to the force after six movies.

This is not X-men. It is Star Wars, and there has to be some kind of story arc that matches and complements I-VI.

For me there has to be something new in these new movies; not just that the force awakens and becomes unbalanced again and a repeat of themes already covered.

        • November 29, 2014 at 1:36 pm
          Permalink

You can only keep balance for so long and Luke was doing a good job at it until someone (Driver) found that ancient lightsaber and started to look at making himself more powerful than the Uncle who turned his back on him and refused to teach him. Same with Daisy, he chose not to teach anyone hoping he would be able to take the weight of the force to his grave and leave the universe balanced.

Anonymous November 28, 2014 at 23:08 PM here

Just wanted to add that the Sith scene can indeed be a flashback. The planet seems to be Alderaan. If you have played SWTOR you will clearly get the impression that this is Leia’s home planet at night.

If this is Alderaan this makes the flashback extremely important imo. It also explains why Tarkin would have loved to blow the planet to smithererens.

Testing the Death Star on an entire planet that provided so much for the Empire always seemed a bit too much for me. Now we might have proof of this!

If a Sith other than the Emperor or Vader existed on that planet or he did something on that planet or even left something again on that planet that something had to be erased even at the cost of millions and millions of voices crying out in terror.

The destruction of Alderaan was a pre-approved plan it seems. Tarkin seems to have been under direct orders by Palpatine to destroy it anyway at some point. Tarkin just wanted Leia to be there to witness it so he could mnaximize the benefits of the planet’s destruction. Good strategy if my theory is correct.

It will also prove JJ a true master of the Force if he has thought this one through!

The way I envision the full trailer to begin:

It opens in space, all of a sudden you hear Han Solo’s voice albeit a little grizzled/older “Punch it Chewie” Star Wars theme kicks in as the Millennium Falcon flies at the screen. The rest of the trailer play out.

Or even at the end of the trailer a character says (even better if it’s a new cast member/character) “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”.

I wish they would stop using stupid closeup action cam angles on characters faces and legs it’s like a made for TV action production, this cheap style was not used in the original Starwars trilogy so makes the film feel more like a JJ Star Trek film experience, also scrap overusing of CGI it’s to polished and obviously fake, use Models you Doofuss, real vehicle flight is not smooth and precise it’s loose and unstable like in the original films the ships should twitch and jolt. The Trooper outfits really suck, they look like motorcycle courier crash helmets with plain white suits of armour, they probably have DHL or FedEX on their backs just to claw in revenue for Disney. Much to clean and over produced and what is with the main starwars logo with the force awakens in the iconic classic STAR TREK type face, Abbrams you narrow minded ass, just another Mind F***k! in an age that just has no clue on how to make a great film, and enjoyed by Dumbasses that are to shallow and dense, with their Costa’s and Tweeting to understand what a great movie is. This is a real popcorn shafting. Thank’s for screwing up great memories of great cinema actors by involving them in this. I guess I am an “old-timer” on the other side of the spectrum. I would consider myself a Star Wars fan, not an OT fan or a PT fan. I grew up on the original trilogy (I still remember the first time a saw the millennium falcon, on a trading card that came in a loaf of wonder bread!) and loved the PT as well (despite some questionable acting). Maybe because I am a geographer by trade, I love the Star Wars “world” and can overlook some of the poorly executed moments that occur in all six of the films. All I was thinking watching this new trailer is that this looks incredible, but it doesn’t look like either the OT or the PT cinematically. It does look like Star Wars though. There is a Star Wars aesthetic, a look, that carries through all the films. And that is clearly present in this trailer.

Dude, THE VOICE IS ANDY SERKIS, so… ???
Look I don’t like JJ, but the film is written in part by Lawrence Kasdan and the music is done by John Williams, so this movie will not have Star Trek’s dodgy screenwriting (still figuring out why O’hura has the hots for Spock, like WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN??), and it won’t have Star Trek’s gimmicky music (keeping it real here). Nobody said this movie is gonna be the best star wars movie ever, except Anthony Daniels and a couple hyped-up websites.
So far, I can’t complain. And even if this movie turns out to be bad (which is probable) I for one am going to refrain all judgement until I have seen the movie, then I can hate it with accuracy. But that can wait.
Worst case scenario? Ep VII is bad, worst case. However, JJ is out after that anyways. Ep VIII is gonna be directed by someone else, it’s in the contract.
The Star Trek font is a bother though :/
But back off of R2-D-Ball, that is actually as OT as a Droid can get. I wonder if the Jedi use it for training like it’s air-borne cousin, hmm…

    here!

Man! So many things that need analysis!

Let’s go third impression here, and albeit a defense for our beloved stormtroopers.

As far as I am concerned the trailer was the first and so far only Star Wars related piece of cinematography that actually made the average stormtrooper look threatening.

The new helmets are just fine, no need for everyone to be picky! The fact of matters is that JJ ACTUALLY SET THE SCENE THE TROOPERS APPEAR IN A WAY THAT MAKES THEM 1000% more threatening than ever before.

For the ones that feel somehow cheated by the new way the armies of the Remnants are handled consider this: Did you not stop to think that the one they are after is actually in real danger? That feeling has JJ all over it baby 😉

The fact that this is so familiar to you of course gives you the right to hate it if what you see seems cheap.

I however have no such experience. My culture is far from all that and the things I saw I liked because they are a first for me and in SW.

I thought the teaser was a little over hyped.
I was expecting to see the original heroes make an appearance, so was left a little disappointed to be honest.

But… I did like most of what I saw. Daisy Ridley on the Land-speeder, The new Droid (which I am presuming belongs to Daisy Ridley’s character), Stormtroopers and the X-Wings sequence, were all good.

Not sure about the new bad guy yet though. Looks like he was pissed about something and is about to take out his anger by striking down that little tree with his Lightsword which is a bit meh!

Thought the CGI Millennium Falcon scene was a bit tagged-on, so hope it will look better in the finished film or left out completely.

Hopefully we will see our original heroes in the second teaser then I will most definitely be more excited than I am now.

Actually, there is a lot of story information in the trailer. Regardless of length, every trailer adheres to the same laws. They are coded with logistic ingedients. Just have to pay attention.

The point of the character reveals [you might say the point on the film] is the ambiguity of things. / Boyega isn’t a Storm Trooper. He’s merely wearing a Storm Trooper costume. Oscar Isaac isn’t a Rebel pilot. He’s merely piloting an X-Wing. Daisy Ridley isn’t some scruffy kid living on Tat. She’s carrying a legacy in her blood (unbeknownst to her.) Darth Zephyr isn’t strictly a villain. He’s the Darkside equivalent of Bruce Wane.

It will also prove JJ a true master of the Force if he has thought this one through!”

I have a hunch it’s Endor… or perhaps a new planet. The McQuarrie concept art had other Endor environments which remind me of what’s in the trailer… and might fit if that guy is indeed looking for Vader’s mask.

Very short and in the same time very informative. After watching it I have had a sense of nostalgia, tears almost dropped from my eyes, can’t wait DEC 15.

What about Boyega, if he is really a stormtropper, cloning facility decided to add some pigments to their clone cooking pots? I hope he just have stolen this armor on some purpose.

30 years gone by, which tells us that cloning facility is still producing soldiers or they just cant become old? If war is over why storm-troopers are still on the Empire side? Do they have a new commander?

Ridley is cool, bike is old school looking for sure. Some kind of 32-64 cylinder engine in it, cant wait Jeremy Clarkson to test it 😀

Small droids are ok, remember that little droids look like mice at the Death Star in Ep4? SW needs that stuff.

1000 Falcon and X-wings are the best spaceships I have ever seen and now they are made using newest computer effects, ooooh yeah! “Tie fighter is coming Chewie, six o’clock! ArhhhhUrrhhhh! Nooo, what you mean I am too old for flying?”

And now the dessert: Mister A bad guy. I bet most of discussions will be about that scene in the woods. I have a hope that the title of this movie means that the real force awakens, the force of the Sith species, not dark jedies like Dooku or Sidious. I hope JJ will bring Sith pure blood in the movie, real Sith who had waited for their chance to arise, who looks down on dark jedies, who believes that only Sith species are the most powerful force warriors in the galaxy. He has an old light saber, why old? look at the laser, its obviously different, it lights not that smooth like Dooku’s or Vader’s.If he is a real redskin Sith species This will be fantastic. The forest, is it Endor during the winter? Looks like it. I think a bad guy visited Vader’s burials there, very possible. But why he took out his light saber? He sensed somebody and prepared for a battle? Maybe he was pissed off by something and prepared to cut some trees?

And the sound of light saber in the end. Fantastic JJ, 10 of 10 you’ve got from me and I will give 10 more if the bad guy will be a sith actually. Just imaging redskin Adam Driver – he has a very very Sith face, doesn’t he? Although in a mask, but I bet when he will take off it to show who he really is it will be become sth that “Luke, I am your father” twist. Maybe somebody won’t agree with me and say that Sith pure blood is only a character of expanded universe and nothing more, but I remember in Episode 1 Qui-Gon said that Sith were extinct 1000 years ago, does he meant the pure blood or dark jedi at all? This is a very good thing to think about. That’s why I love SW, just because of its fantastic universe.

What else, besides pure blood, JJ can bring to us? Let’s see some options for a bad guy:

Somebody mentioned a collector who stealing artifacts from tombs or dead bodies. Good idea, but I feel sth wrong with this, it isn’t a SW style somehow, who agrees?

Vader’s secret apprentice? The question is, why this apprentice wasn’t with him for all that time from Ep4 to Ep6? Secret missions? Exile? A little chance for this candidate.

Palpatine? Absolutely no, this fella can’t survive the fall into the reactor.

Palpatine’s master? He was killed by Sidious in the book, how does he survive? Low chance for this one.

Luke? Too tall and slim, don’t you think so? Btw, does Luke know that there is a Jedi Temple on Coruscant or even there is such a planet as Coruscant? Does Luke studied the archives of Clone Wars? Does he know that his mother is from Naboo? I always thought about Luke’s concern regarding the past.

Windu? Actually he could survive that fall in a battle with Sidious in Ep3 somehow and I bet he used dark force to fight with his opponents before. But walking style is different from Windu’s.

Dooku’s apprentice? Almost impossible, Greevus was one.

Somebody new? Somebody who doesn’t have any relationship to previous bad guys? Doubt it, a guy without a story and connection to previous episodes will be a big fail. Or…?

I still bet on pure blood and not Gwendoline Christie, who is with me?

Actually, we do not now what happened between Ep6 and Ep7. 30 years passes, does republic was still at war with Empire remnants? Does it mean republic was in stagnation for all that time? Maybe this will revealed in the movie. There won’t be Mara Jade, Thrawn, Kyle Katarn and other expanded universe characters for sure.

2015 will be an year of hot discussions about the plot and characters.

    Cheers, guys

I disagree about the droid looking Prequel-ish. + as in other posts here others pointed out there were “silly” droids in the OT.

Agree that the Falcon was a little CGI-ish… but that scene might not have been possible to do with a model considering the twists. The tie fighters fly too fast to determine if they are CGI-ed. It’s possible that the falcon could be a model but the lighting doesn’t reflect that I don’t think… the shadows on the craft itself would be more diffuse if it was outdoor/dessert environment. I guess we’ll see… I think they will still use ship models. The land speeder was definitely a model.

The most exciting day since ep 7 announced, and we haven’t yet had more comments than the ‘women of star wars’ post? Come on everyone…

Spaceships seem to spend most of their time flying around inside atmospheres these days. Not really complaining, it’s obvious why, but it is a bit of a departure from the Star Wars concept.

I think the film will be good, but perhaps a bit underwhelmed by the teaser. New x-wings over water, dam busters style definitely the best bit (told you I wasn’t complaining).

    Two interesting things I noticed:

#1 regaring the sith… if He’s hunting for Vader’s mask in that scene, does that indicate the forest moon of Endor is undergoing some form of nuclear winter? (I’m presuming that it *might* be Endor… perhaps not a nuclear winter if the moon has seasons.)

#2 the sith’s sword… the beam looks like it’s almost made of fire… I’m wondering if he’s sort of like a Wraith? (in that his weapon might be a part of him, almost ethereal?) At first I thought the sword was weird… but I dig it.

For those complaining about the droid… I had a “wtf” reaction too, but I think that’s actually a good thing. Concepts that are foreign to us can be jarring at first… I definitely think it’s cool after watching the trailer 20 times (haha). If that is CGI then it is excellent CGI… I’m a fan.

I think we are so lucky guys & gals… this is gonna be an awesome movie. This is the sequel that some of us have been waiting 30 years for 🙂

    • November 29, 2014 at 4:30 am
      Permalink

One other interesting thought… I wonder if it is Endor… I’m wondering if the X-wings are flying over a lake on Endor?

In a lot of the concept art that never made it to ROTJ… there are paintings of Endor that showed all sorts of exotic locales… perhaps some of those places will be visited/ we see more of Endor & other cool species on that moon.

Just so you know, Luke has Vader’s Mask.
Whether he wears it will be revealed.
Does anyone really think that Endor is even a possibility in a rich story telling atmosphere as Star Wars?
Obi Wan in 25 seconds gave discription of entire trilogy minus Jar,Jar.

        • November 29, 2014 at 7:24 am
          Permalink

Possibly… If you saw Ralph’s concept art for Endor there was some pretty epic imagery that never made it in ROTJ… possibly he made it for what would have been Episode VII?

I’m not attached to any ideas though… just something interesting since there are ties to OT worlds. If Luke took Vader’s mask with him then I guess we’ll see where it ended up… but I’m thinking he left it on Endor. As a Jedi I’m doubtful he would have any physical attachment to the suit, & he probably thought the funeral pyre would be enough to erase any traces of it. He might not have realized a sith would one day hunt for it. Something tells me Luke wouldn’t be wearing it though… I guess we’ll see 🙂

BTW what makes you so certain that Luke has the mask? (I’m not asking in an argumentative way… I just haven’t seen anything to indicate that he does).

Luke set fire to his dad’s outfit and then went to hang with his friends and a bunch of teddy bears. What’s the problem? So he’s not a sentimental type of guy, big deal. I didn’t see Leia make any effort to visit daddy’s final resting spot. In fact, she was apparently quite bitter since she never even said anything about her real dad. And besides all that, aren’t the Jedi not supposed to have attachments? Luke’s not allowed to hold onto sentimental garbage anyway.

What was he supposed to do, sit there and cry like a baby, wait for the fire to go out, and then carry around a burnt up Darth Vader costume? Not to mention dirty up his own clothes. Everyone knows how easily black clothes can get marked up. Imagine how silly that would be after all the partying was over:

My opinion? Andy Serkis is narrating, and he is playing an old alien dude who knows inside information about the sith of old, perhaps an outcast, ex-sithlord, maybe like crippled-dying Plagueis giving advice on how to defeat the real villain who he had a falling out with, sort of a Sith-Yoda dynamic. Exciting stuff whoever he’s playing.

My thoughts on the “Sith” scene: It could definitely be a flashback. It looks to me as though there’s a subtle vignette on that shot. If this is the case, then this “new” lightsaber could very well be a primitive lightsaber design. Even if it’s not a flashback, the lightsaber could still be a relic. It certainly looks like a step BACK in the lightsaber evolution to me.

So glad it’s not like that. I’m completely hooked, especially by the dark side scene. It’s not just the awesome light sabre, it’s the acting, the body movements, strength, elegance, speed, controlled energy, menace (leaning forward/attack position)… perfect attire, wonderful location, dark beauty… the power that movies can have, concentrated in just a couple of seconds. If the film is only half as good as these few seconds, it will be an absolute blast.

This might be the film that unites all the fans, the one film to rule them all! Those who know me know I hate the PT… but hey… if we all end up enjoying the ST then great!

It could surpass the OT. I think JJ’s intense take on SW lends itself well to the look of SW. There was something a bit passive in Lucas’s approach to showing an SW look… like that Boyega scene at the intro… I couldn’t see that shot being in a Lucas film (Because of that I was actually concerned about how JJ’s approach might affect SW).
      But man… does it fit!

lol. You know, for someone who claims to be part of the OT generation, you can be very innocent and gullible at times, Aras. All that this film will do is make the PT look like the greatest films ever made, you’ll see.

Oh, I remember the reactions after the teaser for TPM came out. Frankly, folk were much more excited than this . . . by miles. As soon as the film came out, and as time went by and the fever for Ep. I cooled off, well, you know all too well what happened, don’t you . . .

You just wait for the actual film to come out, for the fever to subside, and then you’ll see how the reaction (of PT haters, especially) we’ll be MUCH worse than it was when the excitement for Ep. I cooled off.

Mark my words: the only thing this film’s going to unite is PT haters with the legions of ST haters that one JJ Abrams is about to bring to life.

Looks great. My only slight concern is that with that evil narrating voice some of the dialogue might have that vague pseudo poetic feel that was in The Lord of the Rings movies “Dahkness rises. WHY THIS TEASER TRAILER IS AWESOME FOR A FANBOY?! find out!!! (but of course not everything is perfect yet!) 🙂

    1. Always two there are: A master and an apprentice. The sith we see in the snowy forest is not the same who is doing the dialog. The apprentice obviously is Adam Driver, we saw him in a X wing costume before in leaked photos and now after seeing the trailer I can say is absolutely him, because of his body movement. This matches with the first George Lucas script of Episode VII: The Fallen Hero and the EU. He’s a new Anakin type of character who will go from the light to the dark The Master I’m not sure who he is exactly but the new red lightsaber speaks for itself. This is a very ancient, old lightsaber… is the only explanation for me… Remember what George Lucas always said about lightsabers: they are heavy, medieval swords. That’s why you have to use both hands for handle it. This new shape (I can’t stop thinking about it as a templar crucifix religious lightsaber) has to be from the master of the apprentice, he could be: Darth Pleaguis, Darth Bane or another ancient Sith Lord … I don’t know… but he’s an Ancient Fear that has Awaken (remember these words) and the lightsaber, I’ll take it as a clue for the connection between the Sith master and the apprentice.

    2. The first scene is PERFECT. The film has that 70s look and it transported me to the 70s/80s right away. My childhood came back faster than speed of light!! I think Boyega is a stormtrooper, the sounds in the scene from Hoth imperial droids indicates he is from the Empire, I just think they crashed and that’s why he’s so pump and sweating, he’s in shock, he’s not trying to defense himself.

    3. The new droid is cute, “soccer-ball” design doesn’t bother me and is NOT a Disney’s Family design… please… It belongs to Ridley’s character.

    4. Stormtroopers looks like Robocops. More “war-kind” less “assault-kind” of trooper? that’s That’s the feeling I’m getting from this scene. They also have that “clone” vibe and ways of act than the original stormtroopers. Their weapons are very similar to the OT

    5. Ridley’s scene reminded me Luke’s vibe in Episode VI in the speeder bike sequence. I think she saw that speeder bike sequence 1000 times! Her speeder bike is GREAT love that concept art since day one and her costume fits perfect.

    6. X Wings KICK ASSES LIKE NO OTHERS! It seemed like a very important mission, this scene could be from the third act of the movie. And for that I have to say that I don’t know if the movie is ending with a big explosion or a big rescue. Maybe both? The Phantom Menace kind of structure??? I hope not… I hope every second blow me away like this trailer did….

    7. The Falcon! I hope this is not a final shot because the Falcon doesn’t look as good as the other CGI elements in the teaser (ball droid, Ridley’s bike, etc). Also the TIE fighters weren’t THAT good but it was unbelievable to watch the Falcon again.. There my tears went off…. Spectacular… and of course…

    8. THE MUSIC.

    • November 29, 2014 at 7:52 am
      Permalink

I’m actually pretty sure the speeder bike is a model… the only CGI part is the engines. It could even be a full scale unit shot the same way the speerder from A new Hope was filmed… just with more advanced tech.

        You’re right!

But honestly… Don’t you think the Falcon can be better? I liked more the old one…

        • November 29, 2014 at 8:15 am
          Permalink

Yes I was disappointed with the falcon… they may still use models for it depending on the shots… I could see why it had to be CG’d for that sequence. I hope they clean it up a bit… but honestly the film looks so good I’m not sure I’ll be too concerned about a few scenes with CGI falcon. It didn’t seem as “beefy” as the model was… and the shadows on the falcon weren’t diffuse enough for the environment.

When I saw JJ’s other films some of the CGI ships looked amazing & others not so (the enterprise for the most part looked very real… the enemy ship in the first film looked too CGI. 2nd film all the ship models looked very good to me).
One scene that looked particularly good was when the Enterprise was underwater & when it took off… I didn’t notice a hint of CGI so there may be hope yet. I don’t know who’s handling the CGI (I know ILM will be working on it… but I’m wondering if whoever did it for the new Star Treks will be on board as well?) I also remember reading there are other CGI labs in the UK & (seattle?) working on scenes as well.

Oddly enough I think ILM’s CGI doesn’t have the best track record… they did Harry Potter. A lot of great looking scenes… but a lot of bad looking scenes as well. When Dobby died that looked pretty real. The giant “baby” & troll looked pretty fake. I think it may have to do with the individual artists & whoever might be directing the CGI staff… I could see a good CGI artist getting messed up if he/she doesn’t have good references.

The reason why they have Boyega ‘pop’ his head up out of nowhere at the beginning of the trailer is an homage to A New Hope.

Loved the trailer, no complaints here. Watched it like 400 times now, lol. Not sure if anyone really notices or gives a crap about the SW intro theme music but in each film, it is slightly different, especially between ANH and TESB. Anyway, this trailer has THE best version of the SW theme.

Well, seeing as Star Wars Commander Windows servers are currently down (btw, if you’re playing Windows SW Commander and you’re a Rebel, feel free to join “RED7″… shameless plug) sooooooo I’m gonna be the millionth person to offer an opinion on the trailer.

Let’s start by saying that I grew up with Star Wars. From the age of 5 until about the age of 26, I lived breathed and just plain worshiped Star Wars. Got into quite a few debates with film buffs who’d tell me the quality of Return of the Jedi was sub pare in comparison with it’s predecessors. Then came Phantom and my entire viewpoint of Star Wars changed.

I hated it. I felt like I was watching the cut scenes of a modern video game written by an amateur. It was such a let down. And Lucas defended it saying, “It was the same as all of the films, it was a kids movie. It’s you who’s changed, not the films.”

It was then that my enthusiasm for Star Wars as a whole came to a grinding halt.

Now I’ve been sucked back in again, but this time there’s this voice in the back of my head (quite loud actually) telling me to take it easy, to prepare for the worst. So I’m hesitant on declaring it a great film prior to seeing it or by simply seeing the trailer.

Now, after saying that (and I know it was a lot, but hey, it’s a free country, the Empire’s not in charge yet) this is what I thought of the trailer.

    Very good.

After reading a lot of the comments here, there’s a very mixed reaction.

First scene, the voiceover and Boyega. I didn’t love, nor hate the voiceover. It was typical and certainly very non revealing. The title alone told us that the Force is going to awaken. Boyega popping up in the desert looking like he’d just regained consciousness from an acid trip? Kinda cool.

The football droid. I honestly just pegged it as showing off another droid. Star Wars has always done that. Didn’t think much of it.

Girl getting on speeder. Neat. Looked good.

Guy walking in forest with weird saber. I dunno. Not exactly Vader menacing. More Lord of the Rings style menacing. Shrugs to the saber. Not sure what that is.

X-Wings. Holy crap! Awesome! Give me an hour of that!

Falcon. Great to see it again. Interesting look. I’m very cool with it. Hope the whole movie doesn’t have that Star Trek look though. The filming of that scene reminded me A LOT of the Kirk diving to the platform in Star Trek.

So, overall. I’m fairly excited. I feel a little bit better about it than I did before.

I have a reference series TV… I’m actually watching the OT on it now. I don’t think Empire looks superior to ROTJ… though I could see why film buffs might prefer the other two. In terms of pacing & story Empire beats it… but ROTJ was my favorite as a child… it has a special place in my heart. But yeah certain story elements feel very tired… nothing was as big a shock as finding out Vader was the father. Finding out Leia was Luke’s sister was more like “meh… ok I guess”. The showdown between Luke, Vader, & the emperor I think delivered though. Man!

But honestly ANH was my least favorite of the 3… I think the Visual & Audio fidelity of Empire & ROTJ were far superior to ANH. But there is a certain amount of genius to ANH that makes it appealing in it’s own right. There as artistic interpretation on Lucas’s part in regards to the Kurosawa references. ROTJ is missed out in that regard… Kirsher’s vision lent itself well to SW & Lucas’s well to ANH… ROTJ just feels a bit too literal visually, as in the director didn’t put himself into it. But it was still my favorite because of the epic battle scenes & finally seeing Vader unmasked was pretty crazy as a kid.

Watching the Prequels on the reference TV does nothing for me… I can tell you if you ever get a chance to compare the blurays of both… the PT doesn’t cut it. The redone scenes stick out painfully in the OT… but hopefully the 4k remasters will can those alterations.

Well while your at it, why don’t you point out the obvious fact that Mark Hamill isn’t exactly Oscar-material either. Mark isn’t cut out for onscreen acting, but he just happened to be perfect for the role of Luke, outside of star wars though, he didn’t pass muster. He’s a great voice-actor and great as Luke though, and he seems like a cool guy.
I have no idea how good of an actor Boyega was in Attack the Block, and frankly I don’t care.
Please hold all judgement for the end of the film, thank you.

I’m convinced the Sith is Gwendoline Christie just because of the walk. Check out some clips on YouTube and you can see the similarities. A female Sith would be a good twist I think. Just my opinion.

Also, the trailer is awesome. It felt like Star Wars and gave me goosebumps. Just think it feels this good already and we haven’t even seen the big 3.

I agree. Gwen has a distinctive gate to her walk which is similar to our sith friend here. It was also rumored that she trained in additional sword fighting. (additional from GOT) It’s hard to speculate at this time who plays the Sith but anything is possibl….

I was pretty sure that Gwendoline was playing a chromed metal armor Stormtrooper with a lightsaber based in one of the old concept art from Ralph McQuarrie for the OT. That’s why I never consider her being the Sith in the trailer. Also I keep thinking that the body movement of the Sith wasn’t elegant, and I don’t think that shadow figure gas a girl. Even Gwen, she’s like much more corpulent, you know. I bet is Driver 😉

I get what you’re saying but there’s nothing elegant about Gwendoline in game of thrones.

    Where is this 2nd trailer?

  • November 29, 2014 at 1:36 pm
    Permalink

Here are a few more things I take from the trailer:

    1) The feeling is going to be different. When I posted that SW has become real and it means bussiness this time, does not make it all good.

What I am worried is the fact that the new montage we use nowdays may not mix well with the 70’s-80’s “way of doing things on the big screen”.

While I have faith in JJ I can clearly see the direction he wants to take with the new movie
    a) He wants it “lethal” but “not stale” like Episode III. This means that JJ doesn’t want to have the movie give a somewhat ditached feeling from what is really going on, I don’t know.
The actors will have to do extremely well to capture the OT feeling in such a heavy CGI environment.

    b) The new villain is awkward. No other way to better describe him. Not only his movement in the snow seemed unnecessarily clumsy but the way he opens the new lightsaber seems “untrained in the ways of the force”.
The lightsaber is either ancient (explains the weird laser beam) or really badly built.

This shows that INDEED there has been no true Jedi/Sith around for some time. New force users would have to steal ancient lightsabers from burial sites around the Galaxy or either build their own with the limited knowledge they already had by the time Luke vanished.

Also explains the clumsyness, no master around to show this guy how its really done. Added impression here: If Gwendoline Christie ends up using the Force or wield a lightsaber I will be extremely dissapointed. She has no place in the SWU unless she is a Commando for the Remnants. JJ must keep her behind a baslter, it feels right that way.

    2) Everyone in the trailer seem very very skeptical and pre-occupied along with being chased/hunted, attacking, lurking etc. This shows the uncertainty after 30 years of true Sith/Jedi absence. Everyone is tense and they realize how huge this is. It’s as if they are fans themselves!

    3) The narrator SAYS IT ALL: The Awakening is going to be DUAL: Either an ancient Sith Lord will awake, responding to the ancient calling of continuing the rule of the Two, which is not followed for 30 years, or a new Dark Force user will achieve Sith levels of Force manipulation AND Luke will also appear as a reaction to the new Sith lord, also with along with a padawan later on.

This is the first time in SWU we are going deeper into the philosophy behind the duality of the Force people! Never before have I ever heard “the Light”.

Even though this falls into the same tired category good/evil Holywood has been feeding us for so long, this is Star Wars and it hasn’t shown its full philosophical potential ever before. It should have its moment in the sun even after 30 years of silence.

That’s all for now. I’ll be back with more later in the day.

Hmm, that is interesting, why is it that when they said “the Light” they showed Millennium Falcon? You’d think they would show Luke, but they didn’t… Is Luke not on the light or is JJ purposefully withholding, wanting us to THINK luke is dark… Cryptic stuff…

I am not sure what to think. Some things look promising to me (i.e., Ridley on the vehicle, the x-wings, the droid) but that moment of the sith or whatever going into the forest…great idea, but it looked like something out of Harry POtter or LOTR…and that lightsaber, I am not sure why they feel like they have to keep reinventing the wheel by reintroducing the lightsaber in different forms. I personally like the simplicity of the regular lightsaber. Also, that shot of the stormtroppers gearing up for battle, the lighting and camera work, looks more like something out of the terminator movies than star wars. I am excited for the movie, but some elements of this teaser struck me as looking like a fan-made teaser. I may be jumping the gun…lets wait and see what comes in the coming months.

    Ok Guys!
I love the trailer so much but after the 15 view I just noticed a couple of errors!

1A- Daisy first shot shows a big weaphon on the left side of her vehicle.(someone said is like darth maul saber but clearly is like a bounty hunter weaphon, like Boushh)
1B- She is not wearing her sandglasses.

2AB- second shot, weaphon is gone and she goes away with glasses on.

It’s so fast but it’s weird.

    Can someone confirm it?

    My Thoughts:

The people disappointed in the trailer can have their opinion, but its obvious some people are not going to be please no matter what. Those people should leave this site and leave us fans to ponder the next year.

If you hate JJ Abrams, or the idea of a new Movie, or Disney or whatever, why are you here? We get it, you want the movie to fail. Maybe go start a Anti-EPVII site for yourself and the others like you.

Now about me: I saw ANH with my Father when i was 7. He then took me to the other 2 movies as well. Those were the only 3 movies I ever saw with my Father as a child. So needless to say I grew up a huge Star Wars fan.

When I heard the PT was coming out I cant tell you how excited I was. I felt like a kid again for 2 whole years. Then TPM came out and all I can remember is how quiet the theater was. Everyone was like WTF just happened? It broke my heart.

    Now the teaser:

Loved it. Absolutely loved it. Would have loved to see more, but i’ll take it.

The beginning with the suspense and the voice calling out the awakening, very cool.

I am very excited to have Daisy in this film, I think she is going to be great.

X-Wings = Chills, was so cool seeing them skimming over a lake like that, I almost got out of my seat!

Storm troopers: some people just dont get this part and I feel sorry for them. I have always hated how the OT made the Troopers so stupid. These new Troopers look more professional, like real warriors. The lighting effects and shaking of the ship give the feeling of going into an epic battle. Its very adult. Maybe the first time is SW scene is shot from the viewpoint of an actual Storm Trooper? If so Bravo!

The Dark figure. My favorite part. First off let me say that based upon body make up, this is almost certainly NOT Christie. I am almost 100% sure it is Driver. I really worried about how they were going to replace the most iconic bad guy of all time in Darth Vader. This scene, with the Dark Figure walking with an angry purpose, a slight gaint, stopping suddenly and igniting an ancient lightsaber, it was brilliant! I had goose bumps! Driver is going to be awesome as a bad guy.

The saber: I have to wonder if the people who dont like the saber are some of the people who watched this trailer on a phone or a small tablet or laptop. If you had watched the trailer in a theater or on a large screen tv, you would have noticed the blade is rough, and fluctuating. Its almost like a fire sword. Its definitely different than any LS that has come before. I we will learn more about it as time goes by.

The cue in with the Original sound track and the Falcon had me whooping in my seat and stopping my feet! It was so awesome! The CGI was a little rough, but its early.

All in all a great job. I will continue to watch it over and over. Thank you JJ and Disney for taking this on and bringing it back to life for me and so many others. Keep up the great work. You have me feeling like im 10 again!

Agreed. The stormtrooper part was actually one of my favorite bits, the OT stormtroopers worked back then, but things are different now. 10 year-old kids nowadays have a more acute knowledge of how bad-guys and soldiers operate than they did in ’77.
JJ did the smart thing, he Upgraded the stormtroopers to be professional and lethal in response to the public’s standards of how useless villains can be.
Smart villains are popular now, of course the Empire’s stepping it up. Time will tell if they can actually AIM.

When I first tried to find this teaser, I accidentally watched a fan-trailer first. Then I found the Real Teaser and watched that. Result, the Official teaser is WAY better than any fan-trailer, and way exceeds my expectations. Great stuff.

BTW does anyone else think the beginning music is familiar? It’s kinda’ a play on the music when Luke and R2 are about to kill Jabba’s gang. Or maybe it’s just me.

    Hey,

just found the german version of the trailer on youtube. Many guessed that the monologue is spoken by two different characters. In the german version there’s a much bigger difference between the two voices, so I’m pretty sure, that’s there are two different Narrators. Have a look at it:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK12gOGIs7c&feature=youtu.be&amp

I also found this, which I think is great to see.

      Additional info:
What I really didn’t like about the german trailer is, that the narrations have different grammatical tenses. In the original it’s: “There has been an awakening, have you felt it?”. The german one translated is something like: “There’s an awakening happening right now, can you feel it?”, or “There will be an awakening, can you feel it? (depending on the context, which we apperently don’t know, yet).

    — I liked the opening Boyega shot. Tatooine or not Tatooine? Why are we hearing the probot code language though? I’m assuming that’s temporary?
—Liked the ball droid, it looks like Star Wars, unlike most things in this trailer.
—Documentary-style ugly plastic-looking stormtroopers are less enjoyable.
—Ridley jumping on a weird speeder thingy is OK. Why would a little speeder engine sound like a huge pod engine though? Once again, I bet that’s a temporary sound.
—X-Wing shot is meh. Doesn’t look very Star Wars-y.
—Haven’t made my mind up about the new baddie and his/her medieval-looking lightsaber. Presumably, Sith and Jedi have used regular-looking lightsabers without crossbars for millennia, so what’s their point? Ah well—not like everything in Star Wars has to have a point, it’s about visual aesthetic.
—I don’t care whether it’s CG or model work, but that Millennium Falcon shot is the ugliest thing ever. The weird camera move doesn’t belong in Star Wars, and neither does that ugly color filtering. This is why I disliked Abrams’ Trek movies, and it’s too bad that that style of cinematography, how you call it, has now infested Star Wars.
—JJ Abrams is definitely no George Lucas.

I agree about the camera moves. It the OT, shots where the “camera” was moving and we see ships flying were often done through a cockpit from a first person perspective, so we were seeing what a pilot saw. I’d prefer this to random spinning cameras and perspectives.

I’m sure this stick-thing has relevance to the story, like Daisy’s character selling this unimportant item to someone to give her character depth in the beginning of the film and to learn about her circumstances. It may be the stingiest Star Wars trailer ever but, then again, I’m not sure any Star Wars film has had a teaser released this early before. I like it but I’m afraid the Falcon just looks a little weird. It definitely looks like CGI to me. Still, it looks WAY better than that horrible matte painting of the Falcon in the dock in Return of the Jedi. All in all, it looks cool. Yeah, the lightsaber is kind of weird because, seriously, what could possibly be the point of those little side blades? On a broadsword, that’s part of the handle and it’s meant to protect the hand of the sword’s bearer. Here, it would more than likely result in injuring the person fighting. So, I feel a little like it’s just different for the sake of being different. But I’m willing to be convinced that it has a purpose. All in all, I’m excited to have a new Star Wars trailer! I just wish it had emulated the trailers from the other films. While it admirably tells us virtually nothing of the plot, a lot more fast cut shots from the film would have been nice.

I love the new light saber! I think it makes total sense in terms of fighting and protection. Notice the cross-guard has small sections of metal before the light-saber portion begins? Those are to protect the bearers hand if his opponents blade slide down his blade. They are obliviously made of some sort of light-saber resistant material!

As for the cross-beams (or flames as they appear) when the bearer is blocking a strike, he can thrust forward in a punching motion and stab his opponent while simultaneously holding the blocking stance.

    Very cool!

It seems like all that Plagueis shit is really just confined to ROTS. Palpatine goes on about how Plagueis taught his apprentice (Palpatine) how to prevent those he cared about from dying. Well, isn’t that what Palpatine does with Anakin? Some people think when he touches Anakin’s head that is what he is doing (keeping him alive). Otherwise, Anakin would’ve just died on Mustafar.

There’s nothing in that opera house conversation that would suggest any connection to events in E7 or beyond other than maybe “…the darkside is a pathway to many abilities…”

My takes on the trailer part 3!

    1) For all of you bitching about the new saber…. Let the movie do the talking. You know you are going to watch it anyway in the end so you might as well get accustomed to the idea of all types of LS weapons making an appearance.

By the way- the saber is functional, It is 3 times as lethal- the blade is not the only destructive part of the sword you know! JJ just took the concept and lightsabered it. Now the hilt is also lethal!

Truth be told, this new saber is indeed far more dangerous to the holder. Hence the user must be above Master or Darth to wield it properly -my guess.

2)For all of you bitching about the Stormtroopers new appearance: Did you even stop to consider that you only saw a fraction of a fraction of the entire Remnants force? I am sure there are more types of space warriors that have yet to be introduced. I personally loved the new look.

    3) For all of you bitching about the balldroid: Learn to live with it. No movie is perfect and it shouldn’t. Also let the new lump of grease do its thing before judging! At leat we are off the Ewoks and Jar Jar! JJ is a smart man- he knows what he is doing. We shall see how the new droid works.

    4) For all those of you bitching about Boyega and Daisy… Again let them show their skills in acting before starting to complain! They are both new to this and I saw no signs of bad acting. In fact Daisy must ineed have studied Mark Hamill and his scenes on Tatooine in order to pull of that “in a hurry” look as she climbed on to her speeder.

Boyega on the other hand looked very authentic in his reactions of being chased by the scout droid.

    5) For all of those who bitched about the trailer length- eh… it’s supposed to be a teaser? Kinda against the term when you say things like “it was not much”. It’s supposed to generate hype you dummies!

Now here’s where the bitching is justified: What the &^%&^ is going on with the saberstaff attached to Daisy’s speeder? Is its subatomical level unstable or something? Why does it appear/dissapear all the time? Come on JJ! Rookie mistake here!

22 million people have watched the trailer, or 1 million have watched it 22 times… hahah. Pretty cool… I’m in love with the trailer.

Who the heck is piloting the Falcon??? LOL. Looks like it was spiralling out of control and the last minute he or she finally stabilized the ship. Is Han so old that he forgot how to operate it? Or did his daughter sneak it out for a little joyride?

The move is called Immelmann Rolle from Max Immelmann a German fighter pilot from WWI, Han Solo did it in the Empire Strikes Back, the only difference was, the cam was static and not behind the Falcon.

what i’ve taken away from this trailer

all four main new actors look good in their roles, from the brief glimpses you see of them, and assuming adam driver is the guy in the snowy forest

x-wings are still insanely badass and 72yr old han solo can still pilot a ship like no one else in the galaxy

if the rumors are true that luke has gone in to some kind of self exile it probably won’t be for as long as people think, daisy ridley’s character uses a lightsaber pike so someone had to teach her how to use it and i bet it was uncle luke. i think the lightsaber pike is going to be amazing during the fight scenes

the hilted lightsaber, lightbroadsword, laser claymore whatever you call it, is awesome. i’m sure they had sword and fight experts there to help figure out the best way to use it.

stormtroopers finally look like soldiers you should be afraid of. black and white guns, with completely pointless scopes on them, not totally sold on

the ball droid…….atleast those of us with young children and/or nephews/nieces will know what they will want for christmas net year

Judging by these tiny fragments I think the acting is going to be great. The opening with Bagoya popping up and looking panicked is great! Makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, and the way the dark side figure stamps his’/her foot is very unusual and wonderful I think. The new tie fighters look great too. Something about the opening narration and it asking you if you can feel the force awakening is inclusive of the watcher….very cool. Considering 30 years or so have passed, there would be an awful lot of force sensitive’s around. Hmmmm….lots of force sensitive’s choosing sides, sounds awesome to me. Think it’s going to be great! 🙂

The ball droid is proof that they have given serious thought to recreating the same feel and visual style of the OT, having extensively researched the original source material. They have brought to life a concept for a character, that would have been almost impossible to create in the 70′s, and is now possible due a combination of practical effects and chroma key special effects.

The proof is that the ball droid, whilst criticised by some is in fact based on the original R2-D2 concept, this is what Ralph McQuarrie had to say when asked the question in ‘Star Wars Insider’…

“Did the script describe the droids or was their look something you came up with?”…

“I think Artoo was described as a small robot. I thought of him as running on a giant ball bearing – just a sphere, Circle, wheel – like. He had gyros so that you could go anywhere on this ball”.

Ok, if the Daisy weaphon thing is the same scene, why it’s there?
We are normal people we have seen it in our third teaser view.
A Project with milions of Budget and no crew member has seen it before show the tráiler over the world?
I just can’t understand those things

One thing I’m a little bit concerned about is the possibility that they may be adding an awakening in the force to the plot of the movie retroactively in reaction to fans who thought the title sounded too vague and would only be good if it referred to something in the plot. I’d much rather have a tight movie with a vague irrelevant title than a movie with a lot of flabby pseudo poetic dialogue about “something happening”, “an elusive shadow taking shape” or something. I’m still TOTALLY pumped!

Not much left for this movie. Han dies, Montross spinoff with Young but not Old Han and Young Lando, Indy V (Snore), Blade Runner 2 (Double Snore), Episode 8, Young Han Spinoff with another young actor, etc.

You mean the 3 billion he got for selling Star Wars? He gave ALL that to charity. Not that he’s still not a very rich man.

Like many other fans I’m wracking my brain trying to figure out whose voice it is. Then I heard this little snippet from the Hobbit. What do you guys make of this? Similarities?

Not the same guy. I actually have a thought about this that might be historically significant concerning JJ’s career: The main villain might still not have been cast by a “confirmed” actor… sort of like how Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t announced until very close to the release of Into Darkness… and that might be with very good reason for Episode 7.

To take that thought a step further… due to the demasking fiasco:

The voice is Andy Serkis and that is confirmed.

My guess is that Serkis will be the master and the cloaked villain we see here is the apprentice…..

OK, at first I thought it was a bit ridiculous how the bad guy or gal walks up to a small tree and ignites their laser sword like they’re going to cut it down, but turn I realized something: maybe their enemy is out of frame because they are too small? This can only mean one thing, ladies and gentlemen: the HOOJIBS ARE BACK!

I never really liked anything JJ did up til Starwars. Following the production news I was very happy about many of the descissions. But just can bring my self to prented I liked the trailer even a bit. Sorry – I really would like to. That “lazersword” was pathetic and the ball-droid looked like Disneys WALL-E, which is fine for a toddler movie (but a PG-13 can’t really target toddlers now can it?). Also I find Daisy Ridley very unsympathetic (not quite as horrid as Kira Nightley though). Let’s see how it devellops. There are many very competent people on the production team, too bad the director is not one of them.

How do you get on a speeder bike type thing in an unsympathetic way? That’s all she did. Also everyone’s giving this poor droid a bad rap. Why is he so horrid? Like other people have said Artoo is a garbage can.
