Another Character Name from The Force Awakens Revealed – Captain Phasma?

x-wing

The site StitchKingdom is reporting that Lucasfilm and Disney registered several applications for several of the characters revealed in the new teaser trailer, including: BB-8, Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron. Intrestingly there is another name we haven’t heard before among the registrations…

From StitchKingdom (via ComicBook):

Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios recently announced the names for several of the characters featured in the trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (December 18, 2015). On December 11, Lucasfilm went ahead and registered several related applications for several of these characters, including: BB-8, the ball-droid; Kylo Ren, the sith; and Poe Dameron, the X-Wing Fighter pilot.

Among the registrations, however, were many for a ‘Captain Phasma,’ for which we were unable to find any previous documentation outside of an extensive fan-fiction titled Tarkin’s Fist and random usernames.

Very interesting indeed. Tell us what you think in the comments or in The Cantina.

Ok, this one made me laugh.
    Captain Phasma, so… he runs a strip-club or something? Or maybe he’s a crack-dealer?
Just saying, could take a while to warm up to this.
Just occurred to me Poe Dameron isn’t that bad of a name now.

Did you notice at the end of this article it says many were for Captain Plasma.
        As in MANY?
Is it possible that this is a generic name like Foodles was or AVCO. To protect names reveals during the registration process?

I agree. I have to say that I’m not a huge fan of most of these names. Kylo Ren is pretty cool, but the others aren’t my favorite. Poe would be a cool name for Daisy Ridley’s character to me. BB-8? To me, like BB (ball bearing) or beach ball 8. Just seems a bit silly to me personally.

I’m not trying to be a troll by any stretch of the imaginiation. I guess the other strange names like Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett, ect.. don’t sound odd to me as I grew up with these names. I thought that Padme Amildala (Yabadabadoo) sounded dumb to me, even to this day. To me though, the new names don’t sound very Star Warsy.

Agreed – but c’mon…’Han’, ‘Leia’, ‘Boba’, ‘Jabba’??? I could go on and on. These are all pretty stupid names. It’s the characters behind the names that made them who they are.

I learned “chedi” in architectural school, a word loaded with religious significance for Thai Buddhists — it’s no coincidence that in the same entry the synonym “dagoba” appears. The rule book is unclear on Naming Conventions, Star Wars Style, but I quite like the hypocorism of “phantasmagoria” — PHASMA. And it benefits from being unprecedented! I think these type of arguements are hilarious. You don’t have to agree with everything to be a fan. For example, I like everything about the ST thus far except for the horrid names, although I’ll admit most of them are growing on me. But mindless exceptance does not make you a better fan than being highly critical.

It’s funny how on Yoda Chronicles they have Luke watching a holocron and when hearing the names Count Dooku and others mentioned he says:
“What crazy names they had back then”
And this on a Lego Star Wars show!

In the future maybe younger fans will think the same way about these names.

I take it you mean to say “acceptance”, in which case my thoughts are twofold:
Randomly trashing something instinctively without any consideration or effort to understand what your complaining about is not good.
Sitting and thinking about what your saying and giving a valid (and maybe rude) opinion IS a good thing.
I’m not gonna apologize for calling Captain Phasma a strip-club owner, i’m only calling them this based on what’s in front of me, out-of-context, this name fits my description.
I can’t wait to see the name In-Context, hopefully, walking out of the theater, Captain Phasma will make perfect sense.

Come on, lets get real….most of us were kids when the OT came out…no internet…we learned the names by watching the movie, and even then the names weren’t always said on screen. We had to learn them by buying the action figures. By then, we loved it so much that we didnt care about how weird the names were…and who cared anyway? We were kids.

Now…we are all grown up and fed these names, out of context, a year before the movie is released.

Imagine that right now there was NO Star Wars, and they’re about to release the first movie…Ep4…and you hear the character “Captain Needa”. Be honest….you’d think it was a stupid name, and jokes would fly like “Needa? NEEDA?! Yeah….needa new less-stupid name”. Yes…you would…be honest.

Hmm. I agree that the names are weird. The fact is – We do have internet. We do get to hear things before the movie comes out. Some of us are grown up. We do get to hear them out of context. And the names might grow on us. But for now they sound off. But I’ll go along with it.

Well, I wouldn’t be shocked. If — hypothetically — it’s my first time seeing it, I wouldn’t yet know Captain Needa isn’t supposed to *be* in Episode 4. I’d be blissfully ignorant that he won’t show up until Episode 5.

Otherwise, I’d be cool with the name.

They are just randomly throwing things against the wall without looking. Not saying things but I hope they didn’t do that with the dialogue. “And now, Rey we will test the location of your hidden Republic base” “You’ll never be as powerful Darth Vader!!!” “RUN CHEWIE RUN!”

To Anonymous: about the Flash Gordon, it really was kind of Star Wars’ illegitimate Father. It’s Mother being Kurosawa films.
Anything cool about the situation = Samurai Plotline
The alternative Sci-Fi design = a better funded, better realized evolution of the aesthetic concepts in Flash Gordon

To me, just glancing at some stills as a non-viewer, It strikes me that Flash Gordon stands as the root that connects Star Wars and it’s estranged cousin Star Trek. Flash Gordon seems to have valid and original design ideas (albeit cheaply produced). I can totally see the hint of what Lucas would later push the envelope on with New Hope. Whereas Star Trek took the system and Plot concept and every design style that Lucas didn’t take, forking in the opposite direction from ‘Wars.
      Will research this further…

I really feel like all of these names only sound bad because they’re taken completely out of context. Shit like “Lando Calrisian” and “Han Solo” sound stupid as shit when you don’t know how they relate to the character they refer to.

You hear a name like “Captain Phasma” and you picture it just as a name. Like up in neon on a big sign like “SEE! CAPTAIN PHASMA!”. But it won’t be like that. It’ll be like “Captain Phasma, have you ordered your ships to disembark to the Dantooine system?” or something.

You’re all blowing this out of proportion. Chill.

I am Greek so I pretty much know what Phasma, a greek word means…

    Ready?

Phasma or Φάσμα in Greek means range, ghost, spectrum, compass, horizon… take your pick!

It seems that Phasma will be a long range shooter special corps, probably an operative from the Remant.

The Antilles is a group of islands:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antilles

…Since they say “no man is an island” and yet this Captain Antilles character apparently IS and island, we can deduce that he will be somewhat disconnected from those around him. After all, it’s all in the name.

The next day….I’m kind of liking the name.
Seems a bit silly but what other names from past trilogies don’t seem silly?

Greedo,Shmi,,Watto,Porkins,Padme,(I remember the fuss over Padme Amidala’s name when fans first heard it and thought it was terrible.)

I’m okay with other fans not liking the name.
We all don’t have to agree on the same things
    all of the time.

All I want is really good movie to enjoy.
That is what I am hoping for.
