More Evidence About The Force Awakens Practical Effects.
Since day one of The Force Awakens production, J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy made it clear that the vibe of the Sequel Trilogy will be much closer to the Original Trilogy. In several interviews they revealed that the new movies will heavily depend on practical effects. Now there is more evidence about that. Find out more after the jump…
First comedian Phill Jupitus, star of TV shows including QI and Never Mind the Buzzcocks, said something very interesting while discussing his “love” for the Prequel Trilogy with BBC. (via Tom Damms)
I met an effects bloke in Essex, he drinks in my local coffee shop. He said [the makers of the new film] bought every gas-bottled air gun in England when they arrived because they wanted the Stormtroopers’ guns to have a kick when they fired them. You don’t have to fake it; it looks real.
Also a few days ago one of our readers sent us an interesting mail revealing that A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz also visited The Force Awakens set! (via Dan Grigsby)
Hey there, I was fortunate enough to go see Gary Kurtz give a talk in London, Thursday 4th Dec. He covered a lot of old ground regarding his experiences working on Star Wars and Empire. But some interesting news was that he was invited by JJ Abrams to the Pinewood set of The Force Awakens! Kurtz praised Abrams for going “retro” with the look of the movie and the use of practical effects, elaborating on his feeling of nostalgia whilst visiting the Millennium Falcon set. He was impressed by the level of detail that was put into its construction, far more than the original set pieces! He said he eagerly awaits the release of the film next year.
Still the practical effects are not the most important thing in a movie. The Prequel Trilogy also had a huge amount of shots using practicle effects. Of course, what matters the most is the story. And with the likes of Arndt, Abrams and Kasdan behind TFA script we can rest assured that the movie will be really great.

Blasters fire superheated gas, not lasers, so it makes sense.
Can you please define for me the difference between Quantum Plasma Rays in Bursts versus Laser inhanced spectrafires within a hand held fusion core emiter?
It always confuses me.
i would assume,regardless of what’s coming out, that energy of any sort would create a kickback. But we’ll have to double check that when they issue stormtrooper blasters to the armed forces

Hey guys! The site is till not working properly for me. When I visit it, the last post I see is the one with George Lucas still hasn’t seen the trailer. I cleared my cache and refreshed it several stimes, but it’s still “stuck”.
I want to end this comment on a positive note, so I just want you to know, that I appreciate your hard work. This is the No.1 site for me when it comes to Star Wars news. 🙂

I cleared my cache on my PC and it works fine.
However, it does not work properly on my “iPod Touch”. I cleared the browser history and cookies and internet site data. But I am still only getting the DEC 8 article on George not seeing the trailer.
I do not see any option on my iPod to clear the cache. Or am I not looking hard enough?
It seems to work on my ipad if I hit refresh a few times in a row.

Everything is working very well I had problems for the last two weeks and now is like normal, I’m an Android tablet user and all is fine.
Good to know that technology advances in-universe in AGFFA. The ST is set 30 years after the OT, so we should see new technology, no? Well, here we have evidence of new technology! Never before have blasters in AGFFA given a “kick,” but now,thanks to this improved technology, they do! I’m so impressed with the attention to detail.

Try watching ANH again, where the Stormtrooper’s E-11 Blasters were real Sterling L2A3’s (rented from Bapty’s) and firing blanks… recoil, smoke, the whole works!
I think I will see the movie first before I feel rested or assured about any of this.
This franchise has had two great movies, one good one to wrap it up and three stinkers. The name Star Wars no longer hold any meaning for me. It’s up to this movie to make it special and trustworthy again.
And before anyone quotes Luke Skywalker back at me, No, I didn’t forget anything.
Once again each single prequel movie had more practical effects than the entire original trilogy put together so the practical effects is a non-issue.
For anyone who knows how the movies were made that is. It’s only an “issue” for those that want to promote the false stories of the prequels and their production.
The actual issue is very simply as noted the “retro” look of the movie ie what George Lucas did in the past as opposed to the look he created for the prequels SET 20 to 30 YEARS EARLIER.
It’s really that simple. With George figuring out all the basics for them to work off of JJ, LK and KK should be able to do the rest themselves. If they want to rest on the work done by Lucas and his crew of the OT so be it. That will simply make the prequels look all the better for not relying simply on what went before.
The prequels used practical effects that were later smothered with filters and computer effects in post production. It doesn’t matter if the prequels used more practical effects when it looks CGI in the end.. Wake up! the prequels gave us cartoon visuals and actors replaced with CGI
…whatever to this article. I saw the Millennium Falcon in the teaser.
It did not look nor move good.
In fact it looked just like some of the “supposedly” more advanced PT ships.
Same with the tie-fighters. Straight out of a video game.
When you see planes fly overhead, do you scoff at them and say they don’t look real?
I had to consult my Doctor after the trailer.
I’m still in shock of how exciting it was for me. I blew a valve in my pacemaker!
I fixed it with a pair of tweezers and a paperclip.
I did find myself back to work by the following week but unfortunately my Doctor has quit his practice and is in line for tickets wearing cosplay Han Solo gear (snow outfit).
Just think next year they will pull me from the theater in a gurney!

Ironic how there is all this tiresome talk about practical effects… And yet most of the special effects in the teaser were CGI.
I just hope the stormtroopers have better aim
It is small details like this that will give the film a more organic and realism that does not exist in having overdone CGI. Some of PT almost look “cartoony”, I still love them and they have great visual moments but I love the practical, physical pieces as it feels more real.
The bit with the blasters having a kick I thin is a great touch. I am sure though we are talking about a very subtle kick because they are talking about “air gun” kick which as many of you I am sure know is very small, we are not talking “shotgun” kick here. I think it is a small very very cool little detail that adds that much more realism to the film. I can’t wait to get lost in this movie.
Can we please move on to another topic? We KNoW they’re using practical effects. They keep slamming us over the heads with this knowledge. Time to move on…
