There was a strong female presence at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards last night. The four Star Wars actresses attended the event where Carrie Fisher presented the Lifetime Achievement award to her mother Debbie Reynolds. Check them out after the break…

Gwendoline Christie joined her Game of Thrones castmates at the awards. They were nominated for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series”.
Nyong’o was at the event to present the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.
Billie Lourd was accompanying her grandmother Debbie Reynolds at the awards. As we first reported back in November (HERE), Reynolds confirmed Lourd’s involvement with The Force Awakens.
Adding Daisy Ridley, Christina Chong, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Jessica Henwick and Crystal Clark to the mix, shows that this time around the force will be strong with the females in Star Wars.

I watched it last night and it was nice to see Carrie in the spotlight after basically 40 years of nothing. It’s going to be great to see the old cast reunited again. I think we will see much more of them than everyone thinks. They are the core of Star Wars. I know JJ didn’t bring them back just to have a few scenes and let the newbies take over.
It wasn’t 40 years of nothing, it was 40 years of mostly off screen work. She’s a renowned script doctor, and wrote 6 best-selling books.

I really want leia as a jedi master in TFA (with a lightsaber duel scene) but … I know it won’t happen. 🙁
Totally agree. Just give us a force push from Leia as someone tries to assassinate her in the senate. And then she pulls out her lightsaber and the guys runs away. I know she can’t pull off a full action scene, but something to show us how powerful she is now 30 years later.
I’m not against Leia using a lightsaber or Force powers, but I want her primary demonstration of her development as a Jedi Knight or Master to be her insight into the ways of the Force and how that experience has impacted her character and perception of her father.
She’s known of Vader all her life. Did she ever get to commune with Force ghost Anakin afterwards and grow as a person?
I don’t want Jedi to primarily be super heroes but rather characters with substance.
I agree with you as I would love to see them delve into Leia’s feelings about Vader after all these years. The problem is that with the new generation of ST characters being the main focus, I think we aren’t going to get too much character development on Han, Luke, & Leia. Although Luke will get more characters development of the Big 3 simply because he is probably going to train whoever the new protagonist will be.

Ben and Yoda had enough screen time throughout the OT to give us a sense of their thoughts and feelings about various things. Why not Leia, too? It doesn’t all have to happen in VII.
I wanted to “like” this twice but it maxed out, so I’ll comment instead.
For me I always saw the Jedi as problem solvers above all else. The thing with the Jedi jumping around deflecting hundreds of bolts left and right is cool, but cool wears off with too much use.
The fight Anakin and Obiwan on Mustafar was well choreographed and all, but it was still a rehash of Darth Maul in Naboo.
Whereas I just felt like every fight in the Original was different and in a progression, each serving a different purpose to the plot, it evolved and changed it’s nature each time Good-Evil had a re-match. the Prequel fights were just a little too recycled in nature.
But back to the point, the Jedi were always more than just fighters to me. Obiwan cutting some drunkard’s arm off is all good and fun, but the scene where Obiwan is actually giving Han Solo advice, where he says: “You cannot win, but there ARE alternatives to fighting.” I feel that’s more what Jedi are actually about. Helping people. Confronting the Root of the Problem, not some random soldier.
The fact remains that Obi-wan does not kill a single person or droid in the entire Original Trilogy, because he didn’t NEED to kill anybody.
I’m thinking Leia would make more of a “That’s a trap, let’s avoid it” sort of Jedi, as a opposed to a “I’m going NOW!!” idiot. I hope she does no acrobatics, that would be lame and undercut her value as a living breathing character.
I want to see Jedi Leia do a backflip or two & wielding a light saber. I think a scene with her and Luke together fighting as a team would be pretty cool to see. Just imagine… what happens if they both die together? I could only imagine the audience’s reaction.
We have to be very careful with “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if…” thinking. Not doing so could cost us elsewhere, like undermining character development or sacrificing a deeper but less flashy story.
Totally. I hope they don’t cater too literally to what fans say they want because most fans don’t really know what they will end up liking or what will work in a film.
Yeah. Leah has A LOT to deal with. Not only has she learned that Vader is her father but she also watched her entire home planet and everyone she ever knew there destroyed while her father watched (and while the whole galaxy did nothing). Add to that the fact that, in her own words, she had “no time for sorrows” because of her relentless military responsibilities. Now factor in the presumably immense political power she would possess as a rebel leader in a post-Palpatine galaxy. That deep unexamined anger in combination with that immense power could even lead to Leah as a Sith lord at the helm of the alliance.
Leia as a Sith lord is a slap in the face of the bold heroine she was in the Original Trilogy. Of the Big 3, she’s the only one who fought the evil Empire from the very beginning.
The same could be said about the fact that Frodo gets corrupted by the ring or that Bilbo gets old and senile. It’s often the plot twists that make you go “NOOOOO!” that make a story resonate with real life in a trancendent and mythic way. Having said that, I doubt they would actually turn Leah to the dark side but, given her demons, the ghosts of the Alderaan catastrophe, they could easily deepen and complicate her character without straining credulity.

I see what you’re saying…but I like what some others are saying to. I think at the end of RotJ it is implied that Leia is on her way to learning the ways of the Force. With that said, I think it would be cool if Leia was simply implied to have undergone a training. Perhaps we’d get a glimps of her walking down the hall and we see a lightsaber on her hip. I don’t want to see her being a Jedi…I’d like to see her follow in her “father’s” footsteps and try to rebuild the republic.

Leia has a responsibility to help bring back the Jedi Order for the galaxy’s protection, not just Luke.
Good for them. Good for women. Good for Star Wars in general.
I sincerely hope the addition of all these talented actresses will produce memorable characters who help inspire more young girls and women to have more confidence, be true to themselves and pursue their dreams. I also hope they help to make society less sexist in general.

Have to say, Carrie looks amazing. She’s trimmed up quite a bit and just looks happier in general. I’m betting getting back into Star Wars has certainly helped with that.
She looks great but something felt really wrong with her dictation…like she was speaking with her mouth stuck/closed…hope she doesn’t speak like that in the movie
I thought she had a lovely dress but thought her hair could have used a spruce up…lol and she did look trim as well.
