Speculation: Domhnall Gleeson’s Character Might Not Be Who You’d Expect in The Force Awakens.

Domhnall-Gleeson

There has been a lot of speculation flying around about who Domhnall Gleeson will play in The Force Awakens. One of our Cantina members had a brilliant idea… and it isn’t the son of Skywalker. Find out what he thinks, and the evidence that very well may support him, after the jump.

Like everyone else, we have been pouring over all the rumors trying to figure out what part Domhnall Gleeson will play in The Force Awakens. Lately, the buzz has pointed to him being the son of Luke Skywalker, with the rumor that he has turned coat and is working for the Imperials (HERE). There was even a bogus Twitter posting by some rabid fanboy posing as Gleeson (one that couldn’t even spell his name right) that has since been removed and debunked. Although this didn’t necessarily disconfirm the theory that Gleeson is playing Luke’s kid, the son of Skywalker angle never sat right with some fans. But one of our faithful members, Kramgnol, had a brilliant idea.

“I think he will be Major Tarkin. Look at his sunken in cheeks in that picture.”

Tarkin

We know from the Battlefront rumor breakdown by Making Star Wars that there could be a character named Tarkin in the film, and they already uncovered an interesting information about an armband with that name on it.

Also it is pretty evident that Tarkin will be very important character in the new Star Wars canon. The latest novel being considered canon in the new Star Wars era was James Luceno’s “Tarkin”, released last year. Also recently Tarkin made an appearance in Star Wars: Rebels and he was an important part of The Clone Wars. Having all this in mind, we have to agree that it makes sense to see a descendant of Tarkin in The Force Awakens. Probably a grandson?

From all TFA cast members, Gleeson looks like the best candidate for that role. Also let me remind you what Gleeson said in an interview back in June 2014, when asked if he is playing Luke Skywalker’s son:

“I’m afraid if I say anything [about my character], I’ll give away the plot of the whole movie.”

This is very curious indeed. Obviously Gleeson will have a crucial role in the movie, and I really believe that he will be related to a character from the original trilogy. Of course this is just a speculation based on the things we’ve heard.

As with all breaking news, we will keep our eyes and ears out for new evidence, but until something firm comes along, this will give you something to Tarkin ’bout… a li’l mystery Kramgnol may have figured out…

And just for the record, we’re very far from believing that we invented the wheel with that post. I’m sure that many people before us speculated about that possibility. Actually so far Gleeson was rumored to be Luke’s son, a descendant of Obi-Wan, Count Dooku or a new character. My bet is on Tarkin. What do you think? Who is Gleeson playing in TFA?

Special thanks to Cantina Staff member TIDMADT for this article.

        3) Tatooine

I agree. I think that would be MUCH better, having tarkin’s daughter be some inquisitor or high ranking chrometrooper. Besides, for now I am in the pro-skywalker camp. Could be both 😐 I am not necessarily against the idea of Luke Skywalker hooking up with one of Tarkins daughters/granddaughteBut honestly

Its far more likely he is Luke Skywalkers son… And I think its more likely he is a double-agent than a traitor to the republic/rebels.

He is going to be portrayed as a villain throughout the whole movie, until the main characters are trapped in a brig on a Star Destroyer or something at which poit Domhnall Gleeson will free them and take them to Luke Skywalker.

Like most stories … the plot centers around a group of people. Why is it so hard to imagine that the relatives of these people would be important. I suspect that we only get 1 or 2 relatives. Why wouldn’t the son of say Luke or Leia be important? We have many real world examples (especially in sports) where children of famous people continue in the footsteps of their parents. (Note how I share a difference in opinion without resorting to insults … yeesh)

If he is indeed a major, then the rank directly under him would be captain. Major Tarkin would therefore be the direct superior of a…Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). The shoe fits!

Also, the conflict that we can presume that takes place between Leia (and her dilemma over using a republic built death star to take out a with weapon) against a slim shady Major Tarkin (who wants to rid the Galaxy of super weapons) revisits the conflict between Elder Tarkin and Leia in A New Hope…only in reverse, sort of, with lots is shades of grey. Again, the shoe fits.

After all a new hope shows you only a few scenes of them together on the death star. Leia could have given him her body in exchange for leniency and less planets being destroyed by Tarkin. At this stage anythings possible. What a twist to the story this would be.

Considering all of the rumors so far, I’m willing to bet that Gleeson is indeed a Tarkin. There are too many hints to not see it.

This might be the flimsiest speculation so far. “They mentioned a Tarkin and look how sunken Gleeson’s cheeks look in this picture!”

    (facepalm)

Anything is possible at this point because we know so little, but at least the son of Luke rumor came with an explanation of how he fits into the plot and a supposed source (even if it could be bogus).

This is just one guy saying, “you know what I think?” Even if it turns out to be true it’s such a shot in the dark this dude should have been playing Powerball the day he came up with this.

Chill out guys. This is just a speculation article. If the rumors are true about the Tarkin name being in TFA then who from all the cast members seems like a possible contender for the role? Exactly, it’s Gleeson. Still it’s only a guess.

He’s Luke’s son. The tomb entrance Luke is guarding is MJ’s. She holds the key the voice over in the trailer is having Rylo retrieve.

Gleeson as a new jedi (son of luke, but we wont know that in that movie, at leat not until the end… or son of leia, rey’s twin) that is in being correupted to the dark side. Serkis as a the emperor’s clone. Lupita as a rebel leader. Adam Driver I really dont know, but maybe still kylo ren… but ren and rey, could they be somehow related? Serkis also as a kind of Yoda. Von Sydow as imperial general or something. Gwen christie as a sith lord, darth something…

“You fools! Don’t you know who I am?! My grandpa, was your grandpas boss on the first Death Star! My grandpa held your mom and dead prisoner in the Death Star! Haha that’s right! My grandpas boss manipulated the midi clorians to create your grandpa, who was later saved by your Jedi master! Haha I am the grand son of Tarkin! Haha you fools!”

I swear, there are two seperate types of Star Wars fans. The intelligent ones who enjoy the magic of the original films….and then the complete fucking morons who love anything Star Wars. I hope to God JJ isn’t stupid enough to make “the grandson or relative of Tarkin” a major character in this movie. It’s beyond idiotic.

this flashback talk is a bummer. i hate flashbacks in movies. the story shouldnt need to be crutched by something that happened in a different time period. anh was so great because it began right in the middle of a saga. there was no flashback to try and explain what happened in the epI-III, they just told stories and let our imaginations do the rest.

    no flashbacks.

my cousin is friends with gleeson. the only info gleeson has given us (my cousin) is that he plays a more significant role than most people are speculating. he said his character is a huge twist and will be a huge surprise when his character is revelaed in the trailer with the avengers. the next trailer will focus on luke, leia, han, chewbacca, gleeson’s character, and driver’s character and will be about 2 minutes long.

“’m afraid if I say anything [about my character], I’ll give away the plot of the whole movie.”

Saying he’s Tarkins Grandson, isn’t a major plot.

But saying he’s the son of Skywalker, would.

      @ thereisanother

Correct. Being Tarkins grandson wouldn’t change the plot dynamics to such an earthshattering degree which Gleeson is implying his characters reveal would.

He’s a Skywalker. Take it to the bank.

Suppose if Ward gets a leaked script as he hints at and the Skywalker son rumor is true it contradicts Mizzlewump. If not, then Mizzlewump once again outlasts another rumor dump.

Going by Mizzlewump and bouncing all the latest rumor shenanigans off his list you want to think whatever’s out there it will still be true. No Skywalker son and Rey is Han and Leia’s child. Kylo Ren could be Han’s son or a secret son from other previous marriage not related to Leia. I don’t think he is the son of Palpatine as some recent rumor suggested. Good god, this speculation is off the wall. Show some restraint!
