Is it just me, or has Kylo Ren’s costume a certain female touch?

Like, probably my very personal bias, but from the first moment, the character kind of reminded me of Lumiya.

In that both his and Rey’s outfit have the “mummy wrap” look down the arms you mean?

That kind of design down the arm does tend to have a more female connotation nowadays.

Yes, indeed I was thinking of the way the arms and legs are cut – but, really, it’s the whole picture. The way all the limbs are fairly slender, the way (s)he moves. Now, this might admittedly be due to the character being either super-slim, or it indeed being an android, or character with robot parts, and I am not quite sure I am right but — just my gut impression, nothing more.

Totally different matter, but – when the movie was first announced, I thought JJA might go for a female villain: If only because this will be the third super-popular masked Sith villain within the franchise. (After Revan and Vader.) The powers that be might do well in varying that theme, at least a bit. 🙂

Or maybe First Order is xenophobic Nazi type group, and the Resistance is loosely affiliated with the New Republic with the goal of resisting the First Order’s spread across the galaxy.

That’s why you see First Order rally on not Coruscant, and heavily fortified.

Here is my insanely wild guess. After the empire lost its leader the Moffs elect a new leader for their galactic empire. This moff’s forces led by Gwendoline Christie are trying to find force users (the Empire was strongest when led by a sith) to defeat the rebellion and solidify their place as the head of the empire and the whole galaxy. This moffs army is called the first order, which is very hitler-esque. (Notice in the trailer the scene in the new trailer with all the stormtroopers, behind them is a giant podium with a central figure and other figures in dark robes. Looks like one of the old films of Hitler addressing his troops)

The search for force users by the first order could also explain Kylo Ren. He is a want to be sith working for them looking for sith goodies all over the galaxy. His lightsaber is very makeshift and old looking so maybe he didn’t build it but found it. Also, he has nobody to train him so he has to look for artifacts to try and become a more powerful sith lord and so he can train a new order a evil sith badies. This search could also explain why Finn is running away! Because Kylo Ren found out he was force sensitive and wanted him to do some nasty stuff.

Just my two cents, Im probably wrong but guessing is so fun

I enjoyed reading that it was fun, and I would not be disappointed if there was some truth in this. I will look out for your posts in the future, I hope you come up with more excellent stuff. That moff army idea just sounds so cool I want it to be true. It just makes sense to have decisive military leaders as opposed to squabbling politicians. With the chrome trooper leading their moff army just ace. Just a shame kylo ren could be at an amateur level. Sounds like kratocracy perhaps.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kratocracy

Can you write another one plz what you think will be the other side ? resistance or new repbulic ?

      • April 17, 2015 at 4:05 am
        Permalink

Well I keep trying to think only based on the films, clone wars show and rebels show sense that’s all that is canon now. I think the there will not be a new republic. If you watch a new hope Grand Moff Tarkin says the senate was dissolved and that regional governors would be leading things now. That means the empower doesn’t have to do much, so his death would not have collapsed the empires system of government. All that to say I think the rebellion is still a rebellionabd I think the rebellion will be in dire straights for sure.

I honestly think we need to look at the title of the movie, the force awakens. All the Jedi except Luke are dead (that we know of) and all the Sith are gone. (again that we know of) In nature things always seek balance, in the same way would a galaxy with the force, devoid of Jedi, in an attempt to achieve ballance bring about the birth of lots of force users?

I think we will see an explosion or an awakening of the force,in other words, lots of people, getting force powers very quickly. I think the rebellion will realize they need to make sure these force users are on the right and good side and that if they are there presence could give them the bump they need to finally end the war. Luke who was really just trained to kill Vader and the Emperor will finally see he was wrong for not training new Jedi and will come out of hiding to lead a new group of force users to finally defeat the empire. (I think Luke seeing how much damage the Jedi and Sith to the galaxy will have not trained anyone until this point out of a fear of force users making things worse)

So that’s my two cents on the rebellion side of things

Ten times better than many rumors out there. I think you might be on to something here.

That would also help to explain Luke’s absence (if he’s indeed missing for most of the film). If the film’s headed in a direction similar to this, it only makes sense that this new imperial order would want to find and kill the last Jedi at all costs.

    • April 18, 2015 at 9:12 pm
      Permalink

Or Kylo could just be Han’s son explaining why they are so interested in him. At this point, it seems evident with all the info out there. Why pick a random force user to be an apprentice simply because he “wants to.” There must be something special about the force user and he has ties to a powerful blood line in the Skywalkers, makes him twice a lethal to lead an army.

      • April 19, 2015 at 5:41 am
        Permalink

I agree with that. Maybe Kylo Ren is Han and Leias son. Still holds with my theory that Luke didn’t want to train anyone because of all the terrible things that happened to the Galaxy as a result of Jedi and Sith. The question is why would he become a Sith? Maybe out of anger and frustration with not being trained he starts down an dark path in the force.

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was “hot-wired car”, and that’s basically what it is, the lightsaber didn’t work, so he “fixed” it. 🙂 good as new.
Can’t figure out why there’s a big honking CRACK on his emitter, it’s like he got attacked by and ewok’s spear or something.

About the Stormtroopers, I’m on the fence, but I’ll give them a shot [pun intended].

Looking at their armor, I think it’s a bit of a step-down originality-wise form it’s predecessor, EXCEPT for one thing that just struck me: That armor is Medieval.
Something about the helmet is VERY similar to some popular medieval helmets,

    http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-91791456840515_2269_19576868

    http://chivalloot.weebly.com/uploads/3/3/6/0/3360864/6263534.gif?280

Basically imagine if the guy in the second picture asked Steve Jobs to make him a replacement suit of armor, and you got the Flametrooper.
The significance of this is that there is an overriding pattern aesthetically, where things are actually starting to be more or less like the Dark Ages, what with morally ambiguous factions fighting while everyone else is stuck in a constant war-depression. It’s like the Empire is both moving forward AND backward, armor is more old-school design, but the technology has gotten better / more white. I think that’s the feeling evoked, Medieval /Wild West / interegnum no-man’s land.

PS: Anyone else think that Kylo Ren’s a loose cannon, hired sword sort of character? I don’t feel like he’s PROPERLY IN with the Empire, he seems more the Darth Maul-style rogue untrustworthy ally of the Empire.

    • April 17, 2015 at 4:35 am
      Permalink

That would go hand in hand with some of Spoilerman’s rumors.

IIRC, he did mention that the tone of the ST was dark, because the Battle of Endor didn’t mean the end for the Empire, but that it just evened the odds. And so now the galaxy would be torn and worn out after 30-40 some years of civil war.

Also, if there’s no central government around anymore (no Republic and no Empire as we knew it in the OT) it makes sense to think that the galaxy’s been thrown into a Dark Ages sort of atmosphere, absolutely.

    • April 17, 2015 at 10:25 am

That could be true. There were no Sith left within the Empire. In fact there was no Sith left at all.

Star Wars was influenced by Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, not The Seven Samurai. The American film influenced by The 7 Samurai was the western classic The Magnificent Seven.

Is that Kylo saber made out of Lukes or Darths? I recognize the shape/model from OT?

And this lightsaber looked very much like Luke’s ANH lightsaber. Concept art for Rey showed her with what seemed to be Han’s blaster. Maybe hints?

I’m feeling that Gwendolin Christie is Kylo it’s the way the character walks, moves and her height it’s very much like her Game of thrones character. Adam Driver is a red herring I think and we did see him in an x-wing flying suit? Just a hunch. 😮

Kilo Ren design is very uninspired and so EU.
The overall character concept seems so EU – FF.

    I am the only one?

If by “so EU” you mean his design looks nearly identical to Darth Revan, then yes, I agree. However I am assuming this was done by design rather than laziness. Time will tell though.

Just feeling so overwhelmed by all this – love everything, the design on this movie is unbelievable…really hope either Gwendoline or Lupita are playing Kylo, would be such a cool plot twist seeing as everyone takes it for granted Driver is KR…brilliant coverage though guys, really appreciate it.

Could they play the “force twins” card with Lupita and John? And perhaps have a good vs. evil twin story lined up? Also, everybody saw Samuel Jackson fall, who saw him dead? Could any of them be his kids or kids’ kids?

I sincerely hope there’s been some swap of sides.. Like, it would feel really lame, after celebrating the defeat of the Empire at the end of ROTJ, just saying: “well, it wasn’t defeated”..
I need the black character above the stormtroopers to be Luke or Leia. It would be cool if they took control of the Empire to make it good, but.. things went bad anyway. I just don’t want it to be so black and white like OT.

Did any of you noticed the antenna of the Millenium Falcon is different then in the original triology? Or was this allready discussed back when photos of the faclon had leaked? Anyway what could have happened with the old one?

Lando was flying through Death star II and knocked the round radar dish off in ROTJ.

The new Stormtrooper designs along with new Star destroyer, and X-wings means only one thing. Merchandising! Disney must recoup $4B it gave Lucas. It is to attract everyone, old and new to Star Wars. Personally, I love the original Stormtroopers over the new G.I. Joe Cobra-ish look.

Regarding the gender of Kylo Ren. From the very first trailer, to me, there is something distinctly feminine. Perhaps it is because I recently binged on Game of Thrones season’s 1-4 to get my wife up to speed but there is something about how Gwendoline Christie moves that really draws a parallel to how Kylo Ren moves. If you are familiar with Game of Thrones, watch the first trailer again at the lightsaber reveal in the forest. As well, notice the shape of the arms from wrist to shoulder of Kylo Ren and compare to Gwendoline in various garb from G.O.T. Keeping in mind that she is also over 6 feet tall so the height seems to work out. I think it is worth considering that she may even play a double role as the Chrome Trooper/Kylo Ren. If some of the theories suggested are true… 1) the Empire being stronger lead by a sith and the search for force sensitives 2)Kylo Ren being obsessed with sith artifacts. 3) A divided Empire. etc… This could be a plot device for a power grab by this character. Gaining power through deception, a very familiar Sith tactic. Just some thoughts.

Wait did they actually use studio models for the ships instead of CGI? I don’t think anyone’s done that since Star Trek back in 96?

So, there’s another desert planet featured in the saga that’s NOT Tatooine? I’m wondering if they’re stretching the truth here…the way they did with the Rey/Kira thing. Jakku is probably just on the other side of Tat.

Kylo’s saber doesn’t need to look ‘refined.’ That’s the point. It’s a rough assemblage. Crude.
