UPDATE! Details on the Upcoming Star Wars Digital Movie Collection.
For a while, discussions regarding exactly when Disney will distribute the hexology of existing Star Wars movies through the digital format have popped up every now and then. Recently, we’ve found an answer quietly released on Vudu that states that digital releases could happen as soon as this week.
Vudu officially lists April 10 as the release date for the bundle, which includes all six movies and a plethora of bonus features, including deleted scenes from every movie and several “making of” featurettes. Interestingly, all Episodes but A New Hope are labeled as “Disney Movies Anywhere” – almost certainly due to the way that the contract about the rights to original movie are wrapped up with 20th Century Fox. However, the lack of word from Lucasfilm this close to the release of the collection is a bit suspicious. Perhaps we’ll get an official statement shortly before Celebration, or at Celebration in the event that this is delayed.

- The Search For R2-D2 (Deleted Scene)- This footage includes a projected background to make the landspeeder appear to be moving. George Lucas found the finished visual unsatisfactory.
- Cantina Rough Cut (Deleted Scene)- This version of the cantina sequence was assembled with footage from the initial England shoot. After additional photography in California, new aliens were inserted into the final cut. One notable omission is seen here in a cutaway of Han Solo with a local woman.
- Old Woman On Tatooine (Deleted Scene)- As Luke rushes into the town of Anchorhead aboard his landspeeder, an elderly local urges him to drive safely.
- Stormtrooper Search (Deleted Scene)- An alternate version of this scene of stormtroopers searching the Mos Eisley alleyways made it into the final film. Footage from this deleted take found its way into The Star Wars Holiday Special.
- Darth Vader Widens The Search (Deleted Scene)- This footage of Darth Vader and an Imperial officer includes original production audio — so that is Dave Prowse’s voice coming from Darth Vader. This footage was redubbed and used in The Star Wars Holiday Special.
- Alternate Biggs And Luke Reunion (Deleted Scene)- In the 1997 Special Edition of Star Wars, this footage was reinserted into the final cut with one important deletion — Red Leader’s passing reference to Anakin Skywalker remained on the cutting room floor.

- Yoda’s Test (Deleted Scene)- As a test of Luke’s Jedi reflexes, Yoda floats a silver bar before the young apprentice. Luke ignites his blade and cuts the bar into pieces, an effect never completed.
- Hiding In The Asteroid (Deleted Scene)- The Falcon hides inside an asteroid cave, and the lessening thumps of enemy bombardment (realized by simply shaking the camera) lead Han and Leia to believe the Imperials are moving on.
- Alternate Han And Leia Kiss (Deleted Scene)- In this cut of Han and Leia’s first kiss, it’s important to note that their second kiss happens immediately thereafter, and is initiated by Leia, before the scene is interrupted by C-3PO.
- Lobot’s Capture (Deleted Scene)- The fate of Lando’s aide is never revealed in the finished movie, but this footage makes it clear that his role in freeing the Rebel prisoners did not go unnoticed.

- Rebel Raid On The Bunker (Deleted Scene)- In the film, Han and his strike force encounter relatively little resistance in infiltrating the Imperial bunker. This incomplete sequence – without finished visual effects – has a longer gunfight, as well as Han’s reaction to being famously called “Rebel scum.”
- Battle Of Endor: The Lost Rebels (Deleted Scene)- This footage includes Rebel pilots who never made the final cut, plus additional action featuring the Millennium Falcon’s support crew. Footage of General Madine as the Rebel leader was shot in case the puppet of Admiral Ackbar did not look convincing.
- Jerjerrod’s Conflict (Deleted Scene)- Commander Jerjerrod originally had more screen time. He is seen risking the wrath of Vader, and having misgivings about targeting the Endor moon with the Death Star.

What is this “Star Wars” you speak of?
It’s a french movie about tiny bears in space. Their enemies wear clothes and helmets made of white plastic. At the end of the movie the tiny bears kill the plastic people by throwing sticks and stones at them. I enjoyed it very much and the bears are really cute.

for those who believe that the OT is the definition of cinematic perfection, I direct your attention to the end credit song used in ROTJ: the ….. Ewok song???? Talk about an epic letdown to a great franchise. It’s like Lord of the Rings ending with the Loony Toons theme song.
I like the song, I prefer the new John Williams music but still, for every one thing wrong with the OT there are 50 things wrong with the PT
I think there should be 2 releases. One that is perfectly original with yub nub intact, for historical purposes if nothing else.. And one special edition with careful non-distracting updates like Star Wars Revisted, that includes the new end song, which is rather nice. I don’t want George’s special edition (any version of it), but I suppose they’d have to add that to the collection of they were released as one gigantic bundle.

Yes you are correct. That song at the end of Jedi was lame as were the Ewoks. That was when Lucas started to lose it, or when people were scared to tell him his ideas sucked.
Never understood the fuss about Star Wars Movies – There hasn’t been a good one in 35 years – the last 4 have ranged from being a let down to being insultingly bad.
I think most fans when they refer to the cinematic perfection of the OT really mean Star Wars, Empire, and just the good parts of ROTJ. 🙂

I think Ewoks are cute, and realized why everyone hated the prequels when switched language to english and heard anakin’s annoying voice. Watching Star Trek’s reboot I noticed Chris Pine would have suited better anakin’s role, definitely reminds me better of the clone wars animation series, wich I enjoyed, and had even a different tone for anakin’s voice. My suggestion is to learn italian and watch the prequels in italian.
and to remember that star wars is not a tarkovskij drama, therefore there must be room for jokes and humour. I myself like the 80% of star wars, being the 10% anakin’s english voice and the fake-looking tauntauns in empire, and another 10% the new canon books and comics, that I still havent read, so I can’t decide whetever I like them or not. Personally, saying that only two movies and a half are good, seems to me like a 35% maximum, reminding that the franchise is not anymore just six movies. deal with the fact.

Speaking only for myself, I would say that I indeed am not a fan of the PT and will not even bother suffering it in conversation. It is anathema to me. But I did enjoy the Clone Wars and bits of the old EU here and there.
But I like what I like and don’t what I don’t and I could care less if some one else considers me a “fan” or not as if that is some kind of mark of achievement and honor.

The OT is outdated?!! That’s why Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back are the only 4 star films in the series. They have the best characters, dialog, script, and action, without being excessive in any one area. The Directors were excellent and strived for greatness. The acting was spot on and the fans loved the characters and cared if they lived or died. The PT has shown none of these traits. That’s why it is horrible to watch. Give US our OT on Blu-ray…Remastered, but otherwise unaltered!

Totally agree. Jedi and lightsabers or only interesting while they are mysterious, and not the driving force of the plot. I don’t know what they’re cooking up, but I’m dreading there being yet another generic sith threat. If there’s no humanity, who cares? Blast ‘im and be done with it. I don’t want Luke to go darkside, but I gotta admit, it would make things a hellava lot more interesting. I’d be hoping for his redemption the whole time, and even if it’s too close to the OT story, the payoff might be worth it…. meh, just thinking out loud.

I think I will defiantly buy this without a shadow of doubt. But not until about 2027 when the box set appears in a 7th hand bargain store for about £2 battered and covered in coffee stains. However in ten years there will be edit your own Master with add in effects software packages available to stream.

I’ve already got my digital versions thanks to Harmy’s Despecialized SW original trilogy.
We can only hope that with JJ having influence, the original trilogy will somehow be released. Everyone should be happy that JJ is a part of this, since he is a true star wars fan and is the ONLY one to stand up to George Lucas.
I don’t think the villain in the new movies will be from any of the books. They may use those as inspiration, but it will be something different. If there is a good plot or story within one of these star wars books then it might be used to influence the character, but I doubt they pull anything directly from all of the crap I see online about expanded universe and whatever star wars books that are out there.

I’ve checked on the bluray… in an interview he says he wanted dewbacks to appear more real, therefore he added them later on.
They don’t even look remotely real. They look like Sega Dreamcast quality graphics.

The problem with the OT / PT divide is this.
The OT fans include people who are all-out fanatics AND casual movie-goers who can clearly see that they’re better than most the the stuff released at the time.
However, the PT has the uber-fans covered, but casual movie-goers take one look at it and say “Meh”.
The prequels definitely have some merit, but only that type that an uber-fan could appreciate.
Just about any random dude off the street could walk in with no prior knowledge and enjoy A New Hope.
I’ve only recently started enjoying Phantom Menace, but that’s mostly due to me reading various articles pointing out that the whole film is essentially ROTJedi’s negative twin. Lucas really outdid himself with the advanced-film-making story foreshadowing aspect. Unfortunately as a “Film” it’s not that great. I feel that PT is a thesis carefully hidden within a movie, whereas OT is a balls-out blockbuster with some Bhuddist-Liberation messages tacked onto the side for the sake of “having a point”.
PT is definitely impressive in it’s own rite, just not in any way that we stupid movie watchers could understand…
As for me, in terms of having a good time, Speeder-Bike followed by Wicket hitting on Leia just wins out.
The scene where C3PO is worshipped and levitates and R2-D2 chases the one guy with a tazer was just gawdawful. But Wicket himself outside of the one scene is cool, I’d have a beer with him.

I’ve come to acknowledge that Lucas had an ambitious vision of the PT, but just didn’t really have the people around him that were willing or were allowed to help it to see it out. Almost as if he didn’t have complete confidence in it himself. There was everything there, just not done well enough to create any dramatic effect.
OT is heavier on the drama, which is why ROTJ, otherwise a mediocre film, is still loved. The final confrontation is enough. Just like ROTS’s final confrontation was enough because it was what we really wanted to see.
Agreed, I think that the ending of ROTJ with Luke and Anakin vs Vader and Sidious was so dramatic and well executed that no amount of Ewoks or burp-jokes in the 1st/2nd acts can keep me away. Also cough cough Millennium Falcon flying into the heart of the Death Star, like COME ON it just doesn’t get any cooler than that. Not sure if JJ will be able to emulate that with CG and Imax, but we’ll see.
But yeah, Sidious’ argument for why Luke should be evil makes exactly ZERO sense, and Luke actually being swayed by said argument is laughable, EVEN THEN, it’s still just plain-out one of the best movie endings ever in the history of cinema.
In fact I place it in front of TESB’s much-praised ending on the basis that [to quote Joss Whedon] TESB didn’t really HAVE an ending.
For me Revenge o’da Sith just wasn’t awesome enough, it does have pretty good choreography and filming and all so I respect that some people enjoy it, I just didn’t personally. :
As for the PT, mmm, Phantom had a better executed ending, Clones had a decent boss-fight but not much of a conclusion [it really is TESB’s reverse twin], ROTS had a more awesome ending [SPOILER! Yoda’s Spine is Made of Rubber – octo-centarian Jedi master survives two separate eighty-foot falls landed on his back, reports say he suffered minimal injuries],but not as awesome as ROTJ, so, I guess ROTS’ ending was more enjoyable, OH WAIT, except George Lucas opted to make Obiwan a hypocritical a##hole who DITCHES his best friend / future destroyer of a world to possibly the most painful experience out there because Obiwan’s squeamish, If I were Anakin I’d turn to the Dark Side if my bro pulled that on me, seriously, Kill or Save, “Walk Away Crying” is LITERALLY THE WORST THING Obiwan could have POSSIBLY DONE. “You were the CHOSEN ONE! *teardrop_voicebreak*” was way worse than all the NOOOOs Vader said put together.
So on that basis I hate ROTS’ ending on principle, which leaves me with Phantom Menace, which was… so-so.

Too bad there’s not a way to do a hybrid of the old and the updated OT. Didn’t mind some of the changes lucas made to the effects here and there. It’s when he changed what characters actually did and said that irked me the most like. Greedo shooting first. Darth Vader NOOOOOO!!! Idk.

People have made fanedits combining the two. Could always make your own if you wanted, as no one will ever have the exact same preferences as you.
The fan edits are good, also the PT is actually very enjoyable/bearable if you can find the fan edits with strategic cutting of scenes as well as Deleted Scenes slipped back in.
The one that benefits most is Attack of the Clones, C3PO in Geonosis running around on a Battle-Droid body: GONE.

I swore off buying any more versions. I sold like 4 versions on ebay not too long ago. I only need one copy of star wars.
New digital releases are fine, I suppose. The difference in visual quality from previous releases isn’t, to quote Leia, quite enough to get me excited. What I REALLY want is for the Star Wars films to make appearances on the big screen before Episode 7 opens! AT LEAST the original trilogy should be shown! For the sake of The Force, the original trilogy hasn’t been shown in theaters for 18 years!!! Shouldn’t a new generation of fans have an opportunity to see them the way they were meant to be seen before launching into a new trilogy?
That would be amazing seeing as how they got the 4k 16 bit transfers, we could see colors that we would never have been able to see before (& more resolution for 4k capable projectors)
The OT as it is now available has never been seen in theaters as far I know. Certainly not a wide scale release.

If they really just wanted to shut everyone up, they would release it like the alien anthology where you get 2 versions of each movie, the original and the directors cut. The fact that they haven’t done this to me implies it was probably part of the sale that the Blu-ray editions of all 6 movies stay cannon above all else.
I still don’t really get all the hate for the special editions. Was it unnecessary? Most likely, but adding a little rock in front of R2-D2 is not going to affect my enjoyment of the films. Really the only 3 changes I didn’t like were han not shooting first, Vader’s “No” and the younger Anakin spirit at the end…but for every 1 bad change there are at least 2 GOOD changes. To me the emperor scene in Empire was almost unwatchable in hindsight with that weird monkey-eyed hologram that looked nothing like the the emperor in Return. The new version fixes it so we have the same actor in all 6 movies and it ties together nicely. Effects are cleaned up, EU and PT creatures & ships were added to create unity in the saga. It would be one thing if he cut a bunch of good stuff and added 30 minutes of terrible footage…but at the end of the day it is 99% the SAME MOVIE. Just my opinion of course- I can see why it bothered people, but to me it seems like a mountain of hate for a molehill of changes.
Good point, the whole Ride up to Mos Eisley with a [bad] CG droids bumbling around and those weird cow-elephant things annoys the HELL out of me though. Seriously the scene is unwatchable. I’m as offended by this scene as other people are by Jar Jar’s silliness, Binks is all right cause at least he’s his own character, but making Mos Eisley a lame slapstick montage of swinging Jawas and Stuff punching other stuff just ticks me off.
I once saw a bootleg copy of the original Theatrical Release, Mos Eisley was pretty low-key, and the Stormtroopers stuck out as something clearly invading the environment. In the new version the Stormtroopers blend in, it’s pretty bad when the locals are more offensive than the Dictators.
But yeah, other than this one scene, the rest I can take. They finally corrected that blue-screen work with the Rancor so that the Rancor is a comparable brightness to Luke, which is nice. Also I don’t mind the new Ewok Celebration Music. [however I will reject Hayden Christensen’s cameo as not right to the DAY I DIE]
Mm, yeah, Overall it sort of evens out. I still would personally have the Original Theatrical Cut but keep the up-to-date [e.i. consistent] color-grading on the Space-Interior / Star Destroyer – Star Destroyer to match eachother. And Ian McDiarmid, but other than that Star Wars really doesn’t need anything else.
I mean, sure we got 2/3 good things with Special Edition. Lucas PAID EXTRA to give us the bad stuff.
He actually would have saved money by just giving us 2/2 instead of 2/3. Of course that’s it right there. That CG droid hitting the other droid STAYS exactly because they already put in the investment. Damn.

If you remembered, it was postponed on January in favour of an italian movie.
Well, now Star Wars 7 will open in all italian theatres on the 16th of December, two days before the International release.

I will be buying this collection as I have wanted it for sometime…but I have to say that a Blu Ray/DVD/Digital combo pack would have been ideal. They could have even done something amazing like have the Blu Ray (the canonical version) remain intact, while the DVD version contains the Special Editions from the 90’s, and the Digital Version contains the original trilogy as first seen in theaters (re-mastered of course). I would have thoroughly enjoyed a more ambitious product release such as this, but I understand the Blu Ray port to digital for canonical purposes. Part of me wonders if the Digital version will have even more changes on top of the Blu Ray. It’s more than likely a direct port from the Blu Ray content but it would be cool to see some minor changes like the restoration of Bullock as Boba Fett or something like that, which would substantiate rumors that the Fett in the OT is not the original Fett from the PT which may be portrayed in a spin-off film. Just a thought.
