Gary Whitta Writing an Episode for Star Wars: Rebels. Could There be Connection with Rogue One?
Gary Whitta, the screenwriter for the first draft of Rogue One, revealed on Twitter that he is in the process of writing an episode for Star Wars: Rebels…
Writing an episode of @StarWars Rebels while my daughter sits in my office in Rebels pajamas, watching Rebels. #StarWarsRebels

As you know Star Wars Rebels is an animated television series that is initially set five years before the events of A New Hope. Rogue One, on which Gary Whitta worked throughout 2014, is also set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. As it was officially revealed the plot revolves around a band of resistance fighters uniting to steal the plans to the Death Star. So could there be connection between the show and the movie? What if the Ghost‘s crew carried out an operation that allowed for Rogue Squadron to steal the plans? Or maybe Whitta’s involvement with both shows in the same timespan is just a coincidence. What do you think?
Also, according to /Film, Whitta is most likely working on season 3 since Simon Kinberg said that he was writing the finale of season two. This would bring the two projects even closer. Rogue One hits theaters on December 16, 2016, probably just a few weeks after season 3 of Rebels finishes its run on Disney XD.
Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels premieres on June 20, 2015, with the airing of the pilot – The Siege of Lothal.

Might be that, an episode including those thatwill be the main characters to rogue one. Or might just be a random episode with no connection.
These two projects will cross paths. These are events of the same time line, and same rebellion. We’ll at least have a mention of Rebels characters if not even a cameo.
Rebels takes place 5 years befor ANH, while this movie takes place right before ANH.
I have said it before and I will again: these two stories will be linked, likely with major characters, and could be the explanation everyone has been looking for as to why none of the Ghost crew are anywhere in the OT.
….it would be epic if the ghost and full crew went down in a flaming ball of molten metal like a bunch of bothans and exploded in a glorious bloom of multicolored sparks, thus ending their storyline….
Maybe that’s why they cast Freddie Prince Jr.
NOOOOO
Hence the phrase “Down the Gary Whitta”
OT was made from 77-83. Rebels was made 2014. It’s not rocket science. This is the 1st of many flaws to come to the new canon. The integration of new characters and ships set in a time before the OT, but written 30+ yrs. after it. This, however, may take a rocket scientist to put this together correctly that is fluid with the OT.
Well, considering that the OT did a terrible job of fluidly meshing with ITSELF, I’m not holding the new guys by too harsh a standard.
Shhhhhhh, don’t speak to loudly or the OT Nazis will have your head on a stick for pointing out a flaw in their religion.
would guys quit with the OT vs everyone else or vs the PT etc. good lord. its all star wars. OT nazis?? sigh. my 5 year old but was in the theater in 77 and i love it ALL.
Let your now 43yo son speak for himself. I was 7 in 77, so I love the OT. I helped pave the way to this sw generation with merchandize bought and total love of the sw saga and the creativity GL showed us thru these great films. I’m entitled to be critical every now and then.
Does anyone believe in the rumor that Star Wars Rebels will only last for 3-4 seasons, to be replaced with another animated series that will take place during the sequel trilogy?
I definitely put stock in that rumor. There is only really a finite amount of story to tell. Plus at some point Star Wars will need to stop living in the past and focus on the present and the future.
Agree Drew. There is a thousand years of history of the Galactic republic and yet everything Disney is doing seems to be orbiting Episode IV.
this all hasnt even started yet. we have many yeeearrs ahead of us now. theyre focusing on that time right now to get all the kiddies and newbies in on the universe, get em familiar with the roots of starwars before we go off into the future. its pretty clever, actually. but i agree, itll be nice to expand outward from this time period, we’ve had a helluva lot of clone war-ish period stuff…
I could see them doing a post-ROTJ series filling in the 30 year gap.
Why can’t he just go away? 😛
Ezra and Sabine would look drastically different in live action. He has blue hair and she has that rainbow shit color thing going on. Is she supposed to be Asian?
Hard to say if mixing Rebels and Rogue One would work well.
Shmi Skywalker has a cool looking bio (Wookiepedia):
Locations: Lars Farm, Tatooine
Height: 5′ 4″ (1.63m)
Married to: Cliegg Lars
Children: Darth Vader
I can not expect major crossover between them. Because it is so unbelievable. Rouge one seems to be rather serious war movie, so the tone is very different.
Still some character could be pop up in the Rebels as a teaser.
The only rebel I’m particularly excited about would be Ashoka (Felicity Jones). In the other hand, I thikn Edwards said something like “missing the jedi is one of the themes for the movie”.
No live action Sabine, please.
yes im pretty sure it will tie things into the movie.
Darth Vader said to Leia (in ANH), ” Several transmissions were beamed to this ship (Tantive IV/ Rebel Blockade Runner) by Rebel spies. I want to know what happened to the plans they sent you?” And, ” We traced the rebel spies to her.” Vader said to a Imperial Officer. I’d like to know how the writer’s of Rogue One decided that the Rebel spies were X-wing pilots? Could an X-wing have the ability to beam a transmission to another ship? (aka…Stolen Imperial Data Tapes, or Technical readouts of that battle station(Death Star), or is this a story of a certain writer’s point of view without going by what was actually scripted in ANH? I think they need to be dead on accurate with this story, so it matches correctly. I heard that the X-Wing pilots board Leia’s ship and hand her the tapes directly.
I wanna think that Rogue One is the end of Rebels, but the issue of tone is a big one.
So far all the marketing suggests Rogue One is a dark, gritty take on a Star Wars- well- WAR film.
Whereas Rebels is decidedly upbeat and romanticized.
Either the marketing is misleading, or these two things are just not crossing over.
Tone is one thing, but this is just a different market demographic.
Rogue doesn’t really come across as a young-kid-friendly sort of project, it’s more like a teenage demographic.
Which leaves the question how WILL Rebels end?
Speaking of tone, I’m very interested to see how Season 2 will feel compared to 1. Maybe it’ll gradually move towards something reasonably compatible with Rogue One.
It has to end with Kanan and Ahsoka dead at the very least. I don’t think Ezra would die but all the Jedi would need to be gone for the OT to have any sort of levity or for it to make any sense. You can’t have all these supposed major players who are having all these interactions with all these main Star Wars characters but are no where to be found when they are all having their moments and major events that define the galaxy.
Nope, Ahsoka does not need to die. She just needs a facelift, after what they done to her.
Who ever said it was about X-Wing pilots???
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some Rogue One characters show up in that Season 3 Whitta episode, particularly Felicity Jones.
Disney will make sure moviegoer can enjoy Rouge one without watching Rebels , like seeing Avengers without watching Agent of Shields.
Why would they betray fans again? They would get in major trouble.
No they won’t. Star Wars movies do well regardless of quality. People are really expecting Rebels characters in the movie are kidding themselves.
Maybe they try something similar as with the MCU. Like when Cap. America: Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron events had repercussions on Agents of SHIELD… I could see Disney doing something like that, the events that will transpire in Rogue One will set in motion events that will have galaxy spanning consequences that will surely be felt by the crew of the Ghost as well…
The tone of Clone Wars was pretty light and child friendly in Season 1 too. Then got much darker and much more interesting the following seasons IMO. Hopefully Rebels does too. I have to believe we will see some if not all of the main crew killed off at some point.
Wait, you guys mean they’re still making Rogue One? From the lack of news (casting, filming star-up date, rumors..) I thought Disney had canceled it. My mistake.
haha, it seems that way! Actually Disney had an agreement with Paramount that, in order to avoid confusing Rogue One with Rogue Nation, Disney is to hold off any news, announcements, or updates regarding Rogue One until MI: Rogue Nation came out. So for all we know . . . filming could have already begun considering that the script is close to being finished. Who knows! 😛
No real news weeks are boring. 🙁
If there is a connection between the film and the series, which is likely, I doubt they would take merely one 22 minute episode to make that connection.
