Rumor: Diego Luna Joins the Rogue One Cast!

diego luna

According to Variety the Mexican star will join Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed in lead role as another rebel fighter, with Ben Mendelsohn set to star as the film’s primary villain…

From Variety:

At a panel with Edwards and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at the recent Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim, Edwards revealed that the plot of “Rogue One” revolves around the heist of the Death Star plans by a group of rebel fighters, with Jones starring as one of the rebel soldiers. Sources say Ahmed and Luna also play rebel fighters.

Diego Luna

The film will take place between Episode III and Episode IV, but closer chronologically to “A New Hope.” It’s set to bow December 16, 2016.

The cast is expected to be a large ensembler similar to “The Dirty Dozen” and “Saving Private Ryan,” but sources add Luna is one of the leads of the film with Jones, Ahmed and Mendelsohn.

Another great casting decision by Lucasfilm. Diego Luna is great and very distinctive actor with some really memorable performances. The Rogue One cast is shaping to be a very good ensemble of talents.

They will most likely take a break from Episodes after IX and focus solely on Anthologies. Then come back to the Episode/Anthology format 5-8 years later.

I think Lucasfilm should do a KOTOR-inspired trilogy that takes place between IX and X (2021, 2023, 2025). The spin offs continue to be made in between them.

Then, we return to the episodic series with X in 2027 – just in time for Star Wars’ 50th anniversary!!!! qxD

maybe it explains why he doesn’t count as a Jedi?
the best way to solve problems is to bring it out into the open and confront it.
Having a guy on the big screen playing Ezra to show the exact nature of Ezra’s relationship with the force might actually be the best way of dealing with the ‘last Jedi’ paradox,
as opposed to waiting 10 years until some @##hole makes a comic where Ezra and Luke team up [I got nothing against Rebels, but I’m pretty sure everyone above the age of 5 would think that lame].

However I don’t see Ezra in Rogue One for the simple reason of timing.
Ezra’s a bit of a main character [allegedly] in Rebels, so having him as an adult presumably after Rebels takes place sort screws over the show Rebels.

That would be like watching Harry Potter 7 BEFORE 6 was even made [which in a way, is exactly what happened to those of us who still use novels], that’s a time-skip plot-giveaway that is NOT going to happen.

I predict that the next 5 official cast memebers will be male, leaving Felicity as the lone female player in the squadron. (Of course, if there are 8 or 9 pilots total, they’ll probably make two of them women. Lucasfilm is following Marvel’s strategy, let’s not forget.)

So basically, they thought they wanted the exact average between Gleeson and Oscar, and found that

As far as Mendelson as Tarkin, hmm, part of me thinks that could actually work, the other part is disappointed in Disney’s creativity, another part of me is disappointed at myself for thinking Mendelson as Tarkin is actually a good idea. The fourth part of me is telling the third part to STFU because Mendelson and Tarkin are awesome and couldn’t possibly go wrong, and a fifth part of me is LIAO at the whole discussion because it’s obviously a fake RUMOR.

Verdict, Mendelson should be Tarkin, but possibly isn’t, but definitely is… i think.

While on this thread I’d like to suggest that Rogue One should have NO Darth Vader in it.
When I watched ANH, the thing that always struck me is that Tarkin is The BOSS, Vader is acting like a new-comer, as if Vader had only been there for a week or so, that’s kind of the vibe I got; so I always wondered, what’s the story behind that? Where was Vader before the events of the movie? What was Vader and Tarkin’s history? What was their collegial dynamic?

I’m thinking Rogue One should essentially explain WHY Darth Vader was sent out to the Death Star, was he sent as an security insurance after the events of this film?
o_O maybe Ezra IS in this film…

In ANH, Vader stated that the data tapes were beamed to the ship (Tantive IV) by Rebel spies. Where did everyone get the idea that they were X-wing fighter pilots? And these data tapes better be beamed to the ship and not delivered in person. There’s no room here for personal interpretation, or point of view. It must be concrete continuance with the original story. Perhaps they are the same Bothan spies that later on (ROTJ)some died to give Rebels information on the new Death Star. Perhaps they are experts in Death Starology.

Of course if you offer an opinion that does not conform with the liberal agenda you will be edited by this and just about any other site in this age of “white males need not apply”.
The only folks bringing up skin color from what I can see on this site are those having continuous orgasms over about how diverse the new Star Wars casts are.
So, Viral Hide, perhaps you should allow your viewers to express their freedom of speech and opinions and perhaps allow an open dialog in lieu of shutting said contributors down.
As a student of history I always wondered how the Nazi Party was able to dupe a modern civilized nation into the things that nation did during the 1930s and 40s. What I have witnessed in the United States and western nations in general over the last decade make it totally clear on how a nation can be taken in the wrong direction.
Banning speech and causing those whom may have different ideas than your’s to be forced to whisper their opinions behind closed doors is a big step in the direction of losing what freedoms we still have left. For the record I thought Diego Luna was incredible in the movie Open Range. This statement has nothing to do with race or racism and everything to do with tolerating the words of those you may disagree with. Remember, no one has the right to be “not offended”.

Yeah, sometimes I’m creeped out by seeing a post removed, but in this case, yeah, Snow had it coming, but bear in mind this guy is sort of [rightfully] banned on principle.
The removed post accused Disney of being anti-white male, as well as suggesting conspiracy theories about the decline of the white male and going down a checklist of other minorities that are present as if that’s a crime,
to which I counter-argued that Disney typecasts and stereotypes EVERYONE.
The reason I got edited is because it was a reply to Tim Snow [it’s a long story] who almost invariably says stuff worth deleting, so naturally his post being deleted also removes any reply-thread attached to it.

I think racism or whatever is more of a done-issue than most people let on.
I think most people are kind of over it and are ready to move on, but alas, one crazy person represents 100 sane if it means getting more clicks.

    @ dude in a hate

“The removed post accused Disney of being anti-white male”

Whites are being phased out of Marvel comics and the exact same things is now happening in Star Wars.

Disney owns both. So of course they’re anti-white male.

What other conclusion can you come to?

    • May 15, 2015 at 5:29 pm
      Permalink

Since day 1, white men have enjoyed the lion’s share of the roles in film, television and comics, among other areas in our culture, to the overall marginalization of women and minorities.

Look how many heroes are white men. Superman. Batman. Wolverine. Harry Potter. Spider-Man. Neo. Indiana Jones. James Bond. Han Solo. John McClane. Star Lord. Rambo. RoboCop. Captain America. Ahem, pretty much everyone from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ saga… 😛
Etc. ETC. I could go on for days. We all know it’s true – white men have ALWAYS ruled Hollywood.

However, now that companies like Disney are being more progressive and inclusive while still involving white men, your ONLY conclusion is they’re anti-white male? Seriously? ^_-

Do you also cry “white genocide” when you see a white person with a minority?

“People creating what they know” is a major reason why white guys have always dominated in Hollywood.

This is precisely why we need more diversity.

From actors to writers to directors, etc., we need a much wider variety of men and women as part of the creative process.

        • May 15, 2015 at 8:30 pm

When you have white guys creating characters in an industry that’s always been white male-dominated and these white guys identify as being white guys and most of them have grown up with lots of other white guys and have seen them ad nauseam in movies, television, comics, video games, etc. AND “there’s no particular reason for this character to be female or a minority”…

…is it any big surprise that the overwhelmingly vast majority of the characters in our media culture are white guys?

  • May 16, 2015 at 2:31 am
    Permalink

“However, now that companies like Disney are being more progressive and inclusive while still involving white men”

To be “inclusive” means to “exclude” someone else. In this case, the core Star Wars paying audience. White males.

Now, you say they’re still “involved with the franchise,” well, where are they?

The only white guys still left are relics and mummies with only minor roles.

    What’s the takeaway?

That Disney’s “vision” for the future is a white female and black male front and center with some barely visible white guy in the background.

This is what Rober Iger and the board of directors want.

Walt Disney – the man who actually created the company from nothing, and had all the vision and artistic talent – is rolling over in his grave.

Who was everyone rooting for at the end of the last trailer? Han facking Solo that’s who and last time I checked he was of the caucasoid lineage. Settle down Tim I’m sure there will be plenty of white people front and center in the new movies and you’ll have plenty of characters to identify with. I honestly think JJ was smart in not having a blue eyed, blonde haired male front and center after the horrors of Hayden and the high standard Luke left..

      @Tim:

“To be “inclusive” means to “exclude” someone else. In this case, the core Star Wars paying audience. White males.”

You don’t get how that word works. For decades, minorities have gotten used to seeing white men rule the galaxy. Now it’s our turn.

“Now, you say they’re still “involved with the franchise,” well, where are they?”

Besides the original cast, there’s Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Max von Sydow, Andy Serkis and the many, MANY white men that make up the rest of TFA’s cast. Have you forgotten about them?

“The only white guys still left are relics and mummies with only minor roles.

      What’s the takeaway?”

First of all, you conveniently ignore the many white men that make up TFA’s cast. Secondly, white men don’t have to be the leads all the time. Star Wars is for everyone, not just white men. Stop acting spoiled.

“That Disney’s “vision” for the future is a white female and black male front and center with some barely visible white guy in the background.”

Now you know how minorities have felt for decades.

With little exception, Hollywood’s numerous visions of the future have been either whites-only or overwhelmingly white with a handful of minorities tops.

“This is what Rober Iger and the board of directors want.”

It looks like they want people from all walks of life to be a part of Star Wars, not just white men. Don’t worry. Sooner or later, you’ll see more Star Wars films with white male leads. They aren’t going anywhere.

“Walt Disney – the man who actually created the company from nothing, and had all the vision and artistic talent – is rolling over in his grave.”

Seems like you’re doing the rolling for him.

Just like it’s not wise to upset a Wookie, it’s not wise to upset your core audience by excluding them.

White males are where the majority of money comes from at the box-office. They can make or break movies.

So by Disney taking an obviously anti-white male stance, they’re exposing themselves to a fan backlash.

It’s possible they may not even recoup that $4 billion they payed Lucas, and the ST could do the unthinkable and lose money.

“It’s possible they may not even recoup that $4 billion they payed Lucas, and the ST could do the unthinkable and lose money.”

      Ha! Dream on, Tim.

The “core audience” doesn’t care that none of the new leads are white men. Hell, despite all your complaining, you’re STILL going to see TFA yourself!

Where’s the huge backlash? Where’s the passionate cries to boycott everything Star Wars because “white men are being ignored”? A handful of people like you complain anonymously across the Internet, but that’s it. Just talk.

Put your money where your mouth is and swear to never watch TFA even once if you really cared enough “about the cause”.

      Move along. Move along.
