SW7N Review: Marvel’s Star Wars #5
Issue five of Marvel’s comic book series Star Wars is out. Check out our review after the jump.
Excerpt from the review:
Well, Boba Fett fans have no doubt waited for this issue. This could definitely be tagged as the bounty hunter’s “comic coming out” issue, as if he were some cherished debutant awaiting the big night to say “I’m here” to his fans.
Luke is back on Tatooine, looking for answers about the Jedi and what his father’s story is. It’s nice to see the journey Luke is taking to track down any knowledge he can about the Jedi. The moment in A New Hope where he abandons his dead end life and embarks on the hero’s journey is being solidified with each of these comics. I’m hoping as the scope Marvel covers widens we get more Luke. Especially what happened between his defeat in The Empire Strikes back and the confident Jedi he became, taking on the Sith.

Artwork has been incredible in this run.
Are you on drugs ‘anonymous’? either that or you are easily pleased and accept anything. The art is absolutely awful, like some late 1970s Star Wars Marvel comic…
Yes, the art isn’t exceptional at all but to compare it to Carmine Infantino is going a little too far.
I was comparing the current artwork to ‘some’ of the atrocious art that took place in Satr Wars comics between the late 1970s – mid 1980s. No names.
Right, in other words you have no idea what you’re talking about, he was referring to the early artist of Star Wars comics, you’re just bullshitting. It’s not the best I’ve ever seen, but the generalized comparison you threw out doesn’t match at all.
Try again.
Mr Anonymous you are on fire! i am not bullshitting my friend, I have been collecting Star Wars comics since 1978, and also since their resurgence in the 1990s. I know good comic art from bad so get off your soap box and keep drinking the Kool Aid.
at least back then it was real hand drawn art…not “helped” with all this computer generated crap.
I enjoyed reading this issue and it might be the best of the short run thus far, but I make it a point as an avid comic book reader that if a comic teases something as much as #5 did it better pay off in the next issue. This unfortunately did not happen and gave the readers yet another cliff hanger. Looking forward to what is next but I would be lying in I said that having to wait another few weeks to find out what Ben left Luke in that box isn’t disappointing.
Remember that this and the last issue are part of a story arcs not stand alone issues, because of this they will always end on a cliff hanger unless the are the last one of the arc.
Would anybody like to see an R2-D2 comic book series, that takes place before “The Phantom Menace”, about his origins?
It sounds unnecessary but I would like to know what exactly made R2 so special than the average droid.
Padme built him
Postal: Fett Edition.
I only read the first 2 issues, but it seems to me these Star Wars comics are a bit too short. Sure quality trumps quantity, but I’ve ended each one thinking, really? Already?
thats exactly why I get a collected edition from 1st issue to 6th
Not been impressed with this series! Thought they have done well on the other ones they have done so far but Something about this one just annoys me for some reason!
I agree. It’s an exercise in check-listing movie characters and walking us through movie locations to evoke nostalgia. The original story itself is elementary join-the-dots plotting, taking the saga forward in obvious directions and then wasting page count stretching these journeys out for as long as possible. I’m enjoying all the other new SW Marvels much more.
I really like this series. The last one was really good and I hope this one is too. I am excited to see how the comics between episode VI and VII turn out.
Back to the art. It might seem a little simplistic at times….but at least I think it looks Like Han Leia and Luke….
Well the thing about that is that Han, Leia, and Luke faces all look really wooden half the time.
The other thing that annoys me is the ships. They seem missized… not the scale, but like the TIEs in this issue the wings seem too extended and differents sizes. It wasn’t the perspective, it was just badly drawn.
Good news is that a new artist takes over after this arc. Can’t think of his name, but I’ve liked other stuff he’s done.
I remember the old marvel ones didn’t look like them at all!
