Speculation: A “Touch of Evil”? What Exactly is Star Wars Insider Getting at?

Touch of EvilHas Star Wars Insider started trolling their own fan base? The July issue may be skating on that line a bit. In the article the magazine captions some screenshots from the most recent trailer for The Force Awakens. But one caption in particular has stirred up some Buzz.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS

1. A touch of love or a touch of evil? We think we know whose mechanical hand that is… but is there a surprise in store?

SWInsider

So what does this mean exactly? Well, let’s get the obvious and most likely answer out of the way first. The most likely scenario here is that this means nothing. That whoever captioned this picture for SW Insider just wanted to have a little fun and remind us that we know nothing of what the final movie will be for certain. This is most likely Luke, but we don’t know that. SW Insider is reminding us of that fact. Don’t bet the farm on spoilers because we can’t be sure they are all true.
But, what if that isn’t all there is to it? What if Insider is really trying to hint at something underneath the surface here? The widely held belief at this time is that this is either Luke tracking the characters of the new film in the shadows or part of a flashback/force vision scene showing us what Luke was up to after the events of Return of the Jedi. But could it be something else? Let’s look at 3 possibilities based on what the caption seems to be implying.

Theory: This is not Luke – The mechanical hand, the Jedi robes, and R2D2 are all in this shot to make us think we are looking at Luke. But what if it is just misdirection? Perhaps this is another character who either already has, or will find themselves before the running time is up, with a robotic arm and in possession of a familiar astromech droid. Perhaps a defeated Kylo Ren finds himself stranded in the burning wreckage of a battle and R2 was left behind. Perhaps Rey or Finn doesn’t make it out of this film unscathed and finds themselves in possession of a robotic arm. Maybe this isn’t a main character at all and someone else entirely.

KyloRen

The Problem: This shot in the trailer is accompanied by Luke’s narration “I have it”. So unless we are going to either throw out the narration as misdirection or find a second meaning in the words Luke says in the trailer and how they align to the images on screen, it would seem likely that this character is anyone but Luke. Possible, but unlikely.

Theory: Luke the Terrible – Those evil Luke rumors will never die will they? Perhaps we are looking at Luke here. But perhaps it isn’t the Luke we all know and love. Perhaps those embers he is gazing at are the consequences of his own destruction. A loss of control of some sort that has made him fall from the man who threw aside his lightsaber and declared himself a Jedi. Perhaps that touch on R2’s dome is a final show of remorse before succumbing to the dark side of the force. A beaten man looking upon the destruction he has wrought and saying “What have I done?” (This would “rhyme” well with Anakin’s reaction after killing Mace Windu in Revenge of the Sith.) This could also still work with the reported spoilers pointing to Luke’s limited screen time and presence in a flash back with the only change being the cause and circumstances of the rumored destruction and leading towards a far greater role in Episode VIII as the main antagonist to our new heroes.

Luke

The Problem: Evil Luke, although a very gutsy move on the part of the film makers, would anger so many fans I very much doubt they will have the nerve to go this route. The mere mention of Luke falling even temporarily from his state at the end of Return of the Jedi sets off flames in the hearts of many Star Wars fans to the point where they threaten boycott. It would also require a significant shift away from many of the rumored spoilers we have seen so far from the production. Although I’d be interested to see Lucasfilm have the guts to try something this crazy, I’d say the chances of Luke as the evil “man behind the curtain” for the sequel trilogy is slim to none.

Theory: “Touch of Evil” – What if we aren’t looking at this literally enough? What if “touch of evil” is a reference to just that. Orson Welles’ 1958 masterpiece of noir cinema, Touch of Evil is a film about corruption among law enforcement along the Mexican border. Without getting into too many spoilers on movie over 50 years old, the film deals with a couple of ideas that could fit with the rumored state of the Star Wars universe after Return of the Jedi. First, we have a crime that crosses borders resulting in cooperation between law enforcement on both sides. We likely have a border established in The Force Awakens between the Republic and First Order. Could Luke have been drawn out of the Republic to investigate something occurring within the First Order controlled systems? Could this explain a rumored prolonged absence?

The other aspect of Touch of Evil is a strong thematic concentration on the lengths people go to for justice. It investigates the hubris and ego of people who believe they can and should control and manipulate the system. Could Luke be rebelling against a republic for which ends justifying means has become out of alignment with Jedi principles? There have been rumors of Republic superweapons and deeper philosophical debate in the upcoming trilogy. Could Luke the Jedi be on the outs with his own sister and leader of the Republic?

touch of evil

The Problem: This seems a bit complex and deep for the first film of a blockbuster trilogy. I’d love to see Luke and Leia debating over the nature of good and evil and where the line is that you should not cross in the battle against the Imperial remnants and the Sith. But everything about this production from the choice of JJ, to the look of the film so far screams that they want to recapture the simplicity and adventure of A New Hope with this first film. They might go deeper with Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII. But it seems more likely they will keep it lighter the first time out. So, although I think issues like this being explored are a strong possibility, I’d say it’s unlikely this will be the focal point of Luke’s role in Episode VII.

It’s very possible all these theories are completely wrong, and that this was just a meaningless caption. But it is certainly fun to speculate. So, what other possibilities are there? A special shout out to those in The Cantina diving deep into the evil R2D2 theory. Leave no stone unturned! Also special thanks to Cantina member Fizzgig for spotting this caption in SW Insider and sparking the debate. Luke used the force to save the older Anakin and only burned the suit. That’s why you see the spirit of the young Anakin at the end. MVS is Anakin in the movie.

I would hate this if it were true. Once you get into split persons, you’re really reaching for cop-out reasons for a good guy to turn evil.

“Oh it wasn’t Anakin who did all of those evil things. It was Darth Vader!” It screams of “the Devil made me do it,” which is the lamest excuse anyone has ever invented.

The only way Anakin would make sense is if this was a flashback scene from the Clone Wars, which I guess is entirely possible – even though we haven’t heard anything about Hayden C. being in the film. I really doubt that they will have him in this film in any capacity. However, that being said – if it’s not Luke, Anakin is the only other logical character, given the flow of the teaser dialogue with the shot. But even so, Luke still makes the most sense to me given that they show the Vader mask when he says “My father has it…” Granted, the teaser could be complete misdirection. Who knows? I do find it strange that if it is Luke’s hand, it is not covered in synth flesh like in the OT. But I’m still going with the popular consensus that the person with R2 is in fact Luke himself.

In response to the comment about MVS being Anakin – how does this make any sense? Anakin is definitely dead; he’s a force ghost at the end of ROTJ. The canon version is him appearing as he did just prior to his fall to the dark side (Hayden C.), so unless force ghosts age over time, I don’t even see this as a possibility. Even if you consider that 80 some year old Shaw portrayed him originally, an Anakin of MVS age just doesn’t fit with the new continuity Lucas established with the PT. Anakin is like 45 in ROTJ, which I think is why Lucas made the change when the DVD was released to show a younger Anakin. It is this same type issue I have with the suggestion to bring McGregor back to the saga. The last time we saw Obi-Wan he appeared as an older man. I think the only way we get an Anakin appearance is in a Clone Wars flashback or a force ghost appearance portrayed by Hayden C. And does anybody really want that?

Maybe Anakin was cloned during the clone wars. That guy who turned Vader, was his clone. Original Anakin was captured when clone was created. He escaped from jail and lived underground life. Then he found Finn and started to train him. Anakin hoped that Finn finds his original lighsaber, which was taken him before his capture. Anakin was then found by Resistance and Sebastian Shaw was very happy to return play him in the new movie

That sounds like a fun Infinities comic book version of SW, but that would not go over well with the majority of the SW fan base I don’t think. It completely dilutes Vader’s character in the OT. Vader obviously has the memories of the original Anakin and I feel like it would cheapen the story to make Vader a clone. They toyed with this concept already in the sequel to the Force Unleashed game. The original Starkiller died in the first game (spoiler, sorry). You find out in the second game that Vader was using the cloning facilities on Kamino to recreate him. You play as a Starkiller clone in TFU 2 who through the mystery of the force (I guess) somehow possesses the fragmented memories of the original Starkiller. So as feasible as it could be as something that could “work” in the SW universe, I think it would make too many fans mad for them to decide to go that route. And Shaw is dead so I’m not sure what you mean about him returning. And if he was alive, I’m not sure that a 110 year old Anakin makes a lot of sense. Lol.

I really like that “Touch of Evil” idea. It fits in really well with those rumors of Luke being in hiding, Luke still being active, Luke with the Republic, Luke (at least appearing to the Repyblic to be) on the Dark Side, Luke tracking someone or something, and the runor that Leia may have gone mad with revenge or with “the ends justify the means”. Probably my favorite plot speculation so far, out of all of it.

The touch part is misleading. “The touch of evil” is what happens before that scene of Luke consoling R2. In context, Luke will find his academy and padawans dead and burning. Kylo Ren will have been touched by evil as he was apart of it.

I think Luke is evil. First, main voice of narration was Luke’s voice from ROTJ. There were voice on background, and Hamill said it was taken just for trailer. So, I think that image Luke himself, then and now. I think he is not active dark side-user, but something like Joruus C’baoth.

If luke is like C’baoth, it is very easy imagine when Rey come alone to Skellig Michael ask to help Resistance fight against first order. Luke might have some contacts with first order, but he is still only a shadow of former himself. They shall have fight, because scene takes only few minutes, and it is located to the end of film.

In 1977 Lucas wanted Kenobi to be crazy person. Guinness didn’t like it, but now it might be possible that Luke is. His voiceworks are so brilliant. Darth Bane is a good example.

I think in between ROTJ and TFA Luke was training Kylo and Kira (Rey) and Kylo fell to the darkside after learning about his darker roots. He ends up helping to start the first order and Luke feels responsible so he abandons his newly resurrected Jedi Order and then circumstances make him come back out of hiding.

Viral Hide: Since 1995 I have been awaiting a sequel to 1983’s ROJ (also learning about Lucas Arts non-interferrence to story flow in the movies with the 1993 video game Dark Forces)! Another George Lucas inspired great or grand director can move the story further in Episodes VII and beyond! A questionable movie set-up (never explained) of post-Emporor Palpatine Sith Lord addition in 1983’s ROJ of why show advisors to Palpatine with them leaving for the Royal Guards in the Throne Room!? I knew that the “dark side of the force,” I term as “The Dark Widow” of the B’ Omarr the Monk regiment, has not been met by the Jedi, yet! I never thought it was over in 1983 as fools celebrated a possible final rebel victory without clearing obscure ROJ movie footage. The Dark Widow will pass off everything so far as minor web skirmishes until a master Jedi seeks Her out of her Hiding Place! – similar to that earth spider species!

There was a leak last year on Luke’s costume that noone seems to remember (sorry I can’t find the link). Black outer robe, white inner outfit, and that represents the character, when we se him we are afraid he has gone dark, but at the key moment off goes the black cloak and the good old Luke shines through. Now that’s exactly what the “I have it” figure is wearing. If the leaker got that right, I’m sure they got the symbolism right too.
My guess is they’re trying to keep the “Crown Jewels” of the plot secret and while we are getting more and more information, they’re deliberaly sewing confusion on the key plot points.

You’re all wrong. Luke is simply getting up off the floor having fallen over, as old people tend to do, and is using R2 to balance himself as he gets back up.

Wondering whether that hand is from Luke at all. We are tempted to think so because of the trailer. But why would he replace his natural looking robotic hand with this one? Could even be Mace Windu who also had his right hand chopped off. He might have used the force to have himself land safely.

I’m expecting someone to return, someone that we don’t know about yet. Someone who’s kept it a big secret.

Nevermind why he replaced his realistic hand with a metallic hand!

Not that I am buying any of this but from every sinero I’ve heard I would be happy as hell if the mechanical character in the leaked concept art was an evil clone of Luke and we are led to believe it is the one and only Luke turned to the dark side then in the next movie the real luke shows up from exiled obscurity and kicks the shit out of him.

Either of those theories might possibly be true, or not. It’s an obvious trick by their side to mislead our path of understanding what the hell is going on. It seems to me that this is another excruciating benchmark on how not to deal with this matters in the future. All could be. We all want to know what Luke is up to, going crazy, dark side, whatever. We can’t answer that. in a couple weeks we’ll most probably see a goddamn trailer unvealing a couple things, our best shot is just to wait without losing brain cells. For all we know that guy could be some random fucker in the entire galaxy.

I for one think random f#!%ers are TOTALLY UNDERRATED.

      As of the OT,
Boba was an awesome random dude.
Nien Numb was a random dude,
mon mothma was a random chick,
emperor palpatine was a random dude.

Everything was better when they were just random dudes shooting at each other. That’s it! Star Wars! that’s ALL you need to do! Sw ships, lightsabers, the force, genocide, and random dudes. Is that so much to ask?

Then we got PT, Boba’s a clone, yay!
Sidious is Lucifer to Anakin’s (anti?)christ, yay!
      ….

      ….
      so…
      yeah, Boba’s a clone. hm….

      ^^
thanks PT for that sterling info.
Now we know Boba IS NOT some random dude.
instead, his this unbelievably-non-random dude. Except now we know that his childhood would not make a good movie. I feel like so much more of a person now….

The “touch of evil” theory has some amount of merit to it.

30 years ago I was in elementary school. I had purchased a copy of Fangoria – or some other similar magazine, I can’t quite remember anymore, that had an article relating to what would become of look after Jedi. The article stated that George Lucas’ plan was to have Luke fall from grace and turn to the dark side in later years.

Oh how I wish I still had that magazine. Alas, I was so busy staring at it with my classmates during school that it was confiscated from me by my third grade teacher. I never got it back. Ugh.

GL constantly changed his mind on that. I recall an interview where he said there would be no more Star Wars after RotJ because the oppression of the sith was gone and everyone lived happily ever after. I specifically recall EU fans losing their marbles over it. Also there were interviews where he said Luke would be involved in more adventures with a new jedi order and family…basically it’s all still up in the air.

    “My father, HAS it…”

I sense nothing past sense, so there must be a flashback-free Darth Vader sighting in our future because MVS totally looks like Shaw. JJ knows how convincing Dooku looked in combat and he’s desperately trying to capture the essence of the prequels. Star Wars needs old men fighting.

that’s just to resonate the feeling of the classic trilogy. Mark Hamill stated that when recording the voice over he had trouble with saying “had” instead of “has”. If Anakin was in the film…I don’t think he would have had the issue. That line is being taken out of context. Anakin is dead…or how was there a force ghost in RotJ?

This means nothing. Could just be old Luke meeting back with his dear Artoo near a fireplace. This tells nothing about whatever happened with him, aside than having disappeared somewhere in the galaxy.

Luke has a cyborg hand, not a the crude metal hand that we see in the trailer. The only other person in current Canon with a hand like this was Anikan before the Mustafar duel with Kenobi. My guess this is a flashback with Anikan and not Luke. Or someone who is mimicing Anikan out of obsession. Keylo Ren? Either way I would be really surprised JJ decided this is Luke.

Anakin’s first mechno-hand was gold plated, then replaced by one that wasn’t…. so having Luke swap his out for a less snazzy-looking model isn’t out of the question. Perhaps becoming a Jedi Master has caused Luke to let go of his vanity?

      Progress. It happens sometimes.

I have faith in my comment before the script even got written. Leia will turn to the Dark-Side. She will loose Han. Luke will never turn to the Darkside. He is the light mentioned in the trailer. Anakins Hand from ATOC will fall into the wrong hands and Lukes Hand from Empire will fall into the right hand or Vice Versa. Either way there will be a war between Anakin Clones vs Luke Clones. Leia is the Ace in the hole for the Darkside. If you won’t Turn then perhaps she will. Yeah She will. Yes the hands will be used. Plagueis learned you can not clone Force sensitives to achieve the same Midichlorian counts. I think in these films they will figure it out. If it happens I called it back in 2014.

I think a certain Kylo Ren is going to cut off his own hand in an effort to keep up the family tradition. It’s just not a Star Wars movie if somebody doesn’t lose a hand, is it?

People, the person in the shot is Max Von Sydow, this I know for a fact. Max is part cyborg. That IS NOT the same hand as lukes. This shot is on Jakku. MVS has just given Anakins lightsaber to R2. The sword falls in the hands of Maz Kanata, who ends up handing it to leia. There is a lengthy scene at Maz Kanatas castle, which ends up being an homage to Jabba The Hutts lair. This is where our heros find Han and Chewy. I have my sources from lucasfilm.

I have a theory about that scene. In the trailer you see someone sitting in front of something that is burning, now what if that’s luke who gets cremated as Qui-Gon in episode 1 and Vader/Anakin in epidode 6 and the metal hand guy/girl is someone else.
