UPDATE! Star Wars Anthology Rumors: Han Solo/Boba Fett Movie; Anthology 3 Details; Possible Obi-Wan Movie(s).

Han Solo Boba Fett

Although the movie’s a ways away, rumors have just spread that the second Star Wars Anthology (starring Boba Fett, according to Jeff Sneider) might have a familiar face in it: Han Solo, the iconic scoundrel. Read ahead to find out a bit about Han’s role, which two directors are being sighted to take on the project, a little bit of information about what the third Star Wars Anthology is going to be about thematically, and what other character could be scoring their own movie (along with who would play them).

From Schmoes Know:

Let’s classify this as a rumor to start as things are in motion quite a bit. But over and over again, my source is hearing the same thing: Han Solo and Boba Fett will be the focus of the second Star Wars Anthology film set for release in 2018. This is not a new rumor per se, as Latino Review has previously reported the same rumor. What my source is stating is that it looks to be happening with some interesting additions.

The source reports that the conflict between Fett and Solo that was only hinted at in the original trilogy (and seen countless times in the Expanded Universe) will finally be onscreen in a film taking place between Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith. Additionally, it’s been mentioned that characters such as Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Bossk will make appearances throughout the film.

Also, according to the source, Disney really wants to delve into the “hive of scum and villainy” that Star Wars has been known for. As Rouge One definitely seems to be playing off of the influences of War films (the Zero Dark Thirty/Saving Private Ryan of the Star Wars Universe) this Anthology film will explore the influence of Westerns and bounty hunter films. Though no director is attached following Trank’s departure, my source is saying that both Jon Faverau and Matthew Vaughn have been thought to be circling the project.

500px-Han_Solo_(blindly)_fighting_Boba_Fett

It’s sounding a lot like both the Han Solo and Boba Fett spinoffs have been merged into one movie. So, where does that leave the third spinoff? SK’s sources state that while Rogue One is a war movie and that this spinoff (which I’m going to start calling Underworld) is a western/crime film, the third movie will focus on mythology and spirituality – or, in other words, the Force. A few names are being thrown out as potential stars for that movie – Yoda and Mace Windu among them. Personally, I get the feeling that they could be going for an Obi-Wan film. I think it’d be neat if they pulled a rug out under us and did a movie about the Sith, though.

Thanks to Schmoes Know for the scoop!

UPDATE!

Looks like I wasn’t too far off on guessing that there could be something about Obi-Wan in the near future. According to a different source, people at Lucasfilm are apparently interested in making an Obi-Wan film, and Disney is interested in hiring Ewan McGregor for an unknown project. While he was considered to play the title character of 2016’s Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch scored the role) and Disney could be interested in hiring McGregor for something completely different, it’s very likely that they could get him back into the Star Wars saddle with his most famous role.

Kenobi1

This is nothing new as far as rumors are concerned. The mill has been churning in regards to a stand-alone Obi-Wan story for a while now; reported by the likes of our good and trusted friends over at Screen Rant (via a report by Making Star Wars). In fact, many people and colleagues have been hearing rumblings of Obi-Wan not being done in the Star Wars Universe. And now, according to this source, Disney has been courting Ewan McGregor “not to be a force ghost, but for a post-Episode III Kenobi.” They go on to add they’ve heard from multiple people that Disney wants an Obi-Wan Kenobi TRILOGY of films, outside of the Anthology series. This adds some credence to a past story found at Cinelinx who had previously reported the same rumor.

It definitely seems like Disney would capitalize off of the popularity of McGregor’s performance, and the open time period for the characters adventures. Seeing the transformation of the Kenobi character from the end of Episode II to the wise sage of the original film has a lot of potential, and I’d definitely like to see some closure to the Darth Maul storyline that was left open ended at the end of The Clone Wars. After all, Maul’s return and subsequent expansion in The Clone Wars is now ‘canon.’ So it could work.

That’s the big one there; and an idea many fans would most likely get behind. Whether it’s true or not remains to be seen. With Cinelinx and the other mentioned sites commenting, where there’s smoke, there is fire…

Way back when, the possibility of three different Obi-Wan-centered stories told on film were discussed, but it seemed like a whole trilogy may have been too much to ask for. Apparently, the people at Disney disagreed, and there is the potential chance that McGregor could be signing up for three more movies. If any Star Wars actor were deserving of a shot at starring in a trilogy of films, I would have to say that McGregor would rank pretty highly.

As I mentioned earlier, thanks to Schmoes Know for the rumors!

Obi-Wan’s journey is complete. What’s to tell, unless it’s him and Anakin adventures together….prequel to the prequels, AAAWWWWW!!! Obi-Wan kills Darth Maul in Ep1, trains Anakin in Ep2, dismembers Anakin E3, goes to hide on Tatooine in Jundland Wastes, unites with Luke thru message from Leia in R2. gets killed in Ep4, but force ghosts his help to Luke thru rest of Ep4-6. Nothing more to report.

Appropriate that I speak tu a Darth regarding this. I think it would be really cool if they do a tales of the jedi sith story. Like Exarr Kunn vs. Ulic Quel Droma or something like that would be pretty original and cool. We don’t need the Han Bobba thing. It seems played out and boring.

I like the idea of a Solo/Fett movie, but I’m not so enthusiastic about recasting Solo. Harrison Ford IS Solo as far as I’m concerned. I would rather they focus on new characters and move on from the OT. Maybe they could get away with a Solo/Fett mini series- CG based.

I think an obi-strip (sorry wan, I was thinking of my japanese vinyl collection) story would be cool but not with the most boring actor imaginable (Ewan). He played obi-wan like he was an old man throughout the prequels. And that accent…. The Solo/Fett thing sounds a bit tiresome. Don’t mean to ne too negative, I just think there are more interesting characters. Perhaps following the exploits of various bounty hunters would be better.

Obi couldn’t have gotten up to much after hiding. What are we going to see him do, build a mud hut and visit the cantinia now and again for a gin and tonic?

Not sure a trilogy of Kenobi films would work. He either has to be in hiding and keeping a low profile – so what on earth could they fill three films with – or, he is flying around facing Vader, having adventures, which goes against the idea of him being in hiding!

I don’t know how I feel about a Kenobi film if it takes place between III and IV. He went into exile and hid specifically on Tatooine to watch over Luke. I always thought of him as someone who would take the role with patience and at the utmost importance. Leaving Tatooine doesn’t fit with why he went there. I would never see him risking leaving Luke behind unless its something huge and even then I question why he would be in communication with anyone with the fear it could lead to Luke’s discovery.

In ANH, Ben acted like he was very familiar with Mos Eisley spaceport and arranging transport. This could be explored in the standalones.

Maybe Bail would cover his transportation tab. Maybe he’d have to earn his travel by assisting the pilot on an adventure.

Guys, Disney doesn’t care about these characters or anyone’s interpretation of them. They want to make films with built in audiences because they are afraid of risk. It is the same thing they do with Marvel films except there, they have more pre-existing characters to draw from…as long as they have the rights to them. Ha. But they only have 6 SW films to draw on so far, and they are going to milk the characters and backstories of those films for all they are worth. They will simply re-contextualize the original films with a bunch of pointless “anthology” films that take place in between existing films. The bold and smart thing to do would be to focus on advancing the story (as they are doing with episodes 7-9), but that’s a risk. And it takes vision. Throwbacks and winks and references Star Wars minutiae will become very tedious, very quickly.

Their choice of directors so far does not bode well either. We are going to get more reverent, overly referential fanboy nonsense (like the Marvel films) that is wholly derivative and safe, rather than any kid of original vision (like the A New Hope and Empire). They might be amusing initially, but will ultimately be forgettable…just like JJ Abrams’ entire body of work. If you have any hope that you are going to get films (or an experience) that is at all close to your experience of the first two films, you are in for repeated disappointment.

It’s cool if they make anthology films with the original actors. Really cool. BUT: How do they plan making a movie of one of the most iconic movie characters ever, Han Solo, with a different actor? It can only dissapoint. So either use the original actors or just don’t touch their characters, imo.

Ewan McGregor is 44. I would love for his final Ben Kenobi standalone to release about 12-18 years from now, putting him in Alec Guinness’ age range of 62 during ANH.

Ewan’s earlier standalones can be more action-packed, relatively speaking, while the last one takes a more internalized, spiritual and meditative approach while Ewan finalizes his transition to Alec’s Ben Kenobi.

I am very interested in seeing some things that are completely new in the Star Wars films, but for now we have to hunker down in the “passing of the torch -hey, remember the OT?” era. And that’s cool for a while and I am truly excited about these upcoming films. And Disney’s decision to tie-in to plots we know and follow characters we love is wise for this era of Star Wars media. I mean, as good as Guardians of the Galaxy was, it could never have preceded an Avengers film. Guardians was new to most fans. Avengers was familiar. I think SW is taking that same approach…in 10 years, we will be dealing with a very different SW universe…today, we welcome the nostalgia. All that being said, in spite of my desire for something fresh, among all the upcoming anthologies, I am most excited about the possibility of a Kenobi trilogy. I think it could totally work. In the new SW comic issue #4, Jabba, in answering Vader’s question about his knowledge of Kenobi’s time spent on Tatooine – Jabba says that (paraphrasing) “The old wizard gave him a lot of trouble.” So we know that he didn’t just sit around and watch Luke all the time. His time was well spent. I think a first installment set just a few years after ROTS would be cool. It could focus on Obi-Wan communing with Yoda and Qui-Gon and bringing closure to the Kenobi/Maul feud. Maybe he can cleave him from head to groin this time (I’d like to see him come back from that…). A second installment could show a little of that Jabba crime syndicate action that he had a knack for upsetting…and the third could be a Rebels tie-in/ ANH prelude. I’m totally down for this idea.

You honestly believe this. Star Wars fans will show up regardless and the general audience doesn’t care that much on who’s who in the film. Maybe a few die hards will boycott, but in the end even they will see it at some point. People will end up liking it and that will be that. Look at all the Prequel support years after the fact.

The pt sucked Star Wars needs to move forward. If Disney goes with the prequel approach the movies will be an embarrassment again. Like the pt. if they want to tell stories that are chronologically older they should deal with entirely new Heros and villains with new stories and situations. Expand the Star Wars universe dont shrink it by doing movies that are noting more than winks and nods to others more creative work.

Rogue One and a Solo-Fett-Bounty hunters spin-off sounds rather awesome. However, an Obi-Wan stand-alone sounds rather dire. His back story was more than catered for in the dreadful prequels. Would rather the 3rd spin-off went in a totally different direction and possibly introduced new or garnered more airtime to minor characters of movies past.

That’s right! Now you understand. Boba Fett wasn’t just a clonetrooper with a jet pack! He had class. He was a contender. He could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which less face it, went out like a punk down a vaginal abyss!

No one can really match Harrison Ford’s swag and tough-older-brother likability.

However, Han wasn’t born with swag, he learned that as a counter-measure to his cruel surroundings.

If you have a movie that’s Han Solo BEFORE ‘New Hope’, then in my mind, trying to exude Han’s “cool factor” is the WRONG way to go about it.

It might be interesting to get a really good, young, actor [there are some out there],
get Him in, and REALLY dig deep, into who Han Solo the Corellian boy actually is, and go from there.

They need an actor who GETS Han Solo’s soul.

The LAST THING they need is some impersonator who “does a kick-ass version of Han’s shoot first scene”

If you watch A New Hope, you may notice that Han Solo is actually the most emotionally dynamic, carefully nuanced character in the WHOLE FILM. The range of emotion in a single scene is outstanding, Harrison really did turn Lucas’ character in a living breathing thing.
Really whoever the new actor will be, it NEEDS to be someone that goes about it the same way Ford did back in 77′.

Looking “cool” is not enough to make Han Solo believable.

If they can figure this out, hell yes! this sounds like an AWESOME movie!

No more anthology movies please. There is no need to make a Han Solo movie! All we need to know about Han Solo is in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Disney is such a marketing beast they don’t have any sense for storytelling, characters and art. If it’s all about numbers and generating revenue by getting the lisping, slavering, not independent-minded, unable to observe and of critical thinking gaga civic that just screams for more, not knowing why- to go see it: Then PLEASE stop it. IT GETS WATERED-DOWN!

They already have plans for at least three anthology films. “No more.” Please. The future of Star Wars will be mostly anthology films filling in different timelines. Get used to it.

I think these spinoff films should just focus on post Jedi era. We have enough of the old stuff already. If it’s a boba fett story make it about just him not solo. Also Obi wan is done. I want to move forward in the timeline not back. I think a Jedi master Luke film would be way better. Show him starting the new Jedi academy or going into exile. maybe a whole new character story would be cool

So exactly where in the movies is it explicitly stated that Han Solo and Boba Fett were old “friends”?
This is all so dumb. Now they have the biggest sandbox in movie history to play around in and they go for the most iconic roles, and count me in on not wanting to see anyone else play Han Solo because that won’t be Han Solo.
Instead of force-wedging all these stories inbetween episodes, why not make a few STAR WARS movies that take place, say, 200 years before TPM with the Jedi in their prime, or 200 years after Episode IX, when I don’t know?
Or better yet, stay in the timeline of the existing movies but create new characters and stories for people to fall in love with (or not).
I’m definitely not interested in any of these anthology films except for “Rogue One” and that one only because (from the sound of it) it promises new main characters and a new story, instead of rehash only.

Maybe i am alone on this….but i just really have a very hard time with the idea of having someone else playing Han Solo other than Harrison Ford. Han Solo is not just a movie character to me…who you can just replace with other actors, like you would with james Bond etc etc..maybe it is just because I have known Han Solo Literally since i was 3 years old ( i am now 40 ). It actually makes me sad to think of someone else playing him in a movie….he will not seem as real to me anymore..The OT characters should not be tampered with… i would much rather see a computer Animated TV series or an Animated Movie instead of a real live action movie…First of all i think it would be boring as a stand alone movie… The idea of it being a TV series is the best route i think. Boba Fett does not need his own movie. I think this is a huge mistake and hope this Rumor is just that..a rumor. The Obi Wan Trilogy though? BRING IT ON!!

agreed. Just give solo and fett and a story arc in rebels if you so desire.
I don’t mind them re-casting characters if they are significantly younger and cast well (a la Obi-Wan in the prequels or X-Men: First Class). My only problem comes in if they set it too close to ANH. If they are withing 6 or 7 years of the OT, Solo looks like FORD, nobody else. There are excpetions like Ruffalo in the Avengers, but usually re-casting totally takes me out of the film.

If you are going to do anything with a young Han Solo then do it as an animation and use Ford for voice over or a good voice impersonator.

I have had enough of Obi-Wan, but would be interested in any new revelations about the Kenobi family.

As for Boba Fett, as I have said before, I will state again, if it’s not post ROTJ, then it’s a waste.

In an Obi-Wan movie, they could definitely bring in Ahsoka Tano! Finally! In her prime. And this could lead to an Ahsoka Tano spinoff or trilogy. They could even bring Qui-Gon back as a Force Ghost or Force voice, to Obi-Wan. They could even bring in Asaaj Ventress! And Quinlan Vos.

Everyone complaining about Han Solo recasting (and rightly so) remember that Star Wars has always pushed boundaries in terms of technology. What if Harrison Ford mocap acted the role, but then instead of putting an alien/ape over the top, they could put a youthful version of him instead. If anyone could pull it off it would be Serkis & Co. Just some food for thought.

I hope they do this movie. Han Solo, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, and Bossk. Can’t get much cooler than that. I hope they show how Han got the falcon from Lando, since he’s a double-crossing, no-good, swindler. I’d also like to see the “Bounty Hunter who they ran into on Ord Mantell that changed his mind.” Perhaps the Kessel Run and dumping his shipment to avoid imperial entanglements sounds very cool.

The 20 year gap between Episode III and IV could serve as a new set of films for Obi Wan Kenobi. It could be like a Seven Samurai-like trilogy. The story could explore very strong themes of morality, choice, letting go of pain and anger. Give Obi-Wan his own Jedi Trilogy.

I’m cool with all of the spin offs. As for who plays who, I don’t think it matters much provided they embody the character. They’re younger after all, so it’s not going to have as much of an effect. Look at any movie that had two separate actors playing the same role where one was younger and the other older. Granted, I get that it becomes harder when dealing with an iconic figure like Ford. However, a younger character like Solo, in my way of thinking, is easier to stomach because it feels like less of a replacement when removed by fifty or so years.

I think it stands to reason that if the new actor that plays Solo does it well, then he should play the new Indy as well. It makes sense and in a cool sort of way it’s poetic.

In my opinion (provided seven, eight and nine are home-runs) after it’s all said and done, they should just go ahead and remake one, two and three and erase the fact that those atrocities ever existed.

Solo/Fett celebrity deathmatch? I’d love to see that. It’d be fairly easy for them to find someone who could pass for Solo at any age before ANH.

Trilogy of obi-wan movies? I could go for that, but only if the character is going to be played by Ewan McGregor, and we get to see him face off against Ray Park again.
