Nice coincidence! Just seen the concert today as I recorded it from TV yesterday night. It aired in french / german channel ARTE. It’s a great one 🙂

‘We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent,’ Patrycja wrote on Facebook.

‘He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road.'”

Assuming that each anthology film will have a (slightly?) different tone, I’m fine with Williams sticking to just the numbered films. I do hope that he can do more scores for the sequel trilogy, but happy that he’s kicking it off, regardless.

Jurassic World’s score was great because they knew when to use John Williams original score at the right time. The Anthology series will probably do the same.

Although it’s a shame that his fantastic music will not be in the Anthology series, it seems that each will be taken in a certain stylistic direction (heist/others) and therefore the music will be more in that style. This is not to say that Williams cannot write in styles other than his normal grand scale type thing. Perhaps they want something very specific that Williams may not be best for.

also he he getting on in age and it’s possible that JJ/Disney want him to focus all his time and energy on the sequel trilogy so they are done to his usual high standard.

In a way, I do find it a bit disappointing John Williams won’t be scoring the Anthology films, but it will be interesting to see what a new composer will do with it. If it was a choice between him working on the sequel trilogy or the Anthology films, I would rather him stick with the sequel trilogy.

Nothing can ever beat the original score and no new composer will ever replace John Williams. However there are sequels to movies in which he scored the originals the he did not return for that have worked out nicely. The harry Potter movies for instance, the three he did have a feel to them, but after he left the series the rest of the scores were just as good, and the themes he created for that series carried over for the rest of them. So while its a shame that he cannot do the anthology series as long as the new composers reuse his themes while making it their own i feel the new composers will do fine.

Watching an orchestra on Blue- Ray? I know people like watching concerts separated from a movie so they can watch the musicians artfully playing their instruments. I, personally, like such additional bonus material; but, I am addicted to some video footage in a background screen window the way the Academy Awards artistically put together film and music. I would be interested if this was put together during the holidays for people to preview for free and it turns out as masterful the way the Academy awards show music pieces intertwining with movie scenes footage.

I think the Anthology films represent an opportunity for some fresh air for the Star Wars universe in terms of style, cast and soundtrack. So Williams sticking with the base movies is like him offering his seat to new potential talents and I’m fine with that.

I think John Williams is a vital part of the Star Wars universe, that said, I can’t wait to see what other composers bring to the table. I think there’s a lot of room for awesome renditions to the musical themes we already love. And I know that the original score will be as revered as it deserves by the one in charge of each Anthology film’s music. I’m venezuelan, and i’m proud of seen this tribute conducted by fellow venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel.

yes and no, but, honestly, no

much like Lucas giving the initial take-off of this franchise, then giving it to a new generation, Williams has paved a beautiful way with his music and should be passed on to new generations to take it and make it their own in the new Star Wars universe. the main themes will always be there, but they should now be led by new hands

Well, as much as I love John Williams’s scores I believe the Anthology films need something different and fresh. Just as the films are about looking at the Star Wars Universe from a different perspective other than the Skywalker family, I think they should be scored by different composers so that each gives his own interpretation to this Universe we love so much.

I think the opportunity for new young composers to, like Mr. Desplat on Rogue One, follow in the footsteps of the great John Williams is a fantastic opportunity, both to honor Mr. Williams and the chosen young composers, and to challenge these new composers to honor and build upon the foundation that the greatest composer of all time has laid down.

I’m perfectly fine with Williams being on the main series because it will have to move on eventually and the anthology films are a chance to experiment with some things and see how “Star Warsy” it feels. Some things will work well and some won’t.

I’m okay with Williams not scoring the Anthology films. This has nothing to do with Williams himself, more to do with the fact that it looks like the Anthology flicks are going to have unique tones to each that are not the same as that of the main saga. His scores are immersive and timeless, they add tremendous depth to the fantasy element of Star Wars; the Anthology flicks will most likely feel more like “modern” cinema, and I’m okay with them being scored as such. Besides, I’d rather he work on the ST for as long as he can than get bogged down by scoring the other movies.

Since I am a huge fan of John Williams, I would love for him to score the Anthology films. I can’t really name a score he has done in the past that isn’t good. And he was hands down the best part of the prequels.

I really hope that John Williams is associated with all of the upcoming Star Wars films. A film series reallly requires a uniform sound throughout; it of course, shouldn’t be the exact same, but it should evoke feelings reminiscient of those you experienced watching earlier films in thr franchise.

I feel that with the spinoffs comes a whole new era and a whole new adaptation of the Star Wars genre. This being said, it needs a different feel from the original trilogy and a different emotional impact. I don’t think John Williams’ score would be ideal for this new branch, therefore is unnecessary. There are hundreds of other composers with excellent work that can fill this role just as well, if not better.

It would be good if Williams only composes the main films. The anthology series is it’s own thing and a different composer helps to separate it from the episodic series.

  • June 23, 2015 at 3:32 pm

I would like for the Anthology movies to remain separate from the trilogies so they can explore different parts of the world & galaxy and have different tone. So, while I hope that Williams does the score for all the Episodes, I think that every Anthology film should have a different composer.

Plus, give man a break, he is 83 and there are six planned films at the moment. We want him to stay around for a long time, not kill himself working.

I love JW’s work. I would like him to do the Anthology movies as well- but for those ones he just would have to do all new work- no little hints of old star wars music or any little samples of the new music he writes. it would have to be its own thing

I don’t prefer John Williams do the standalones. Each one will have its’ own tone and feel. There are a lot of good, talented composers out there that could bring a fresh take on SW music, but still be true to it all.

No, I think whoever scores them should use John Williams themes but take it in a different direction. Give it a different aural tone to the main movies. Saving John Williams for the main movies would make them more special. To much of a good thing makes it less desirable

Star Wars films are going to continue to be made after his death, so I’d rather see the transition take place before his time is up. I’m glad he’s scoring TFA (and hopefully the rest of the Sequel Trilogy), but I think I’d rather have him come alongside and mentor a young, teachable, and capable padawan for the Anthology films, especially since these independent films are supposed to stand alone and be different than the “main” trilogies.

As much as I love Williams work, I agree that they should go in a different direction for the anthology films. I really enjoyed Jeremy Soule and Joel McNeely’s work who imo should have scored Clone Wars/Rebels and would be a great addition to the spinoff films who could offer their own take on Star Wars without straying too far from the style in the films.

As long as John Williams is alive, willing and able, I can’t see how you could say the Anthology scores would be better without him. I think the scores can be good or even great by drawing on Williams’ themes at the right times with the right instrumentation, but hard to argue that another composer could top Williams.
