EA Talks Star Wars Games – Battlefront & Visceral’s Project.
Video game company Electronic Arts took a moment to talk about the slate of Star Wars games coming out in the coming years. They project that Battlefront will do extremely well, and mention that the Visceral Games project is coming along swimmingly.
From DualShockers:
During the quarterly Electronic Arts earnings conference call, CEO Andrew Wilson and Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen provided more information about the publisher’s upcoming Star Wars titles.
Wilson explained that Electronic Arts “feels really good” about the Star Wars: Battlefront at the moment: it’s made by a “tried and true team” and Frostbite is also a mature engine for this generation of platforms. They feel like they have put in place all the things they need to deliver a great product.
EA had hundreds of people play the game at E3 in the most robust setup they had in recent years for a shooter, and they’re looking forward to having tens of thousands of people play it on over 200 demo stations at Gamescom next week.
Speaking of other titles from the Star Wars IP, Jorgensen clarified that that EA did not mention (as the question he responded to implied) that there is a plan for annual major Star Wars releases, but they know that Disney has plans for many Star Wars movies, and EA is going to try to take advantage of the IP coming out of these movies. There will be multiple Star Wars titles down the line both on consoles/PC and mobile. There’s “lots to come” on Star Wars, and we’ll hear about that in the future.
About the new Star Wars by Visceral Games, Wilson mentioned that as an organization EA is always trying to bring in the best and greatest creative leaders. Jade Raymond and Amy Hennig had a relationship for a really long time and EA has been working with Raymond for some time in order to bring her in.
Raymond isn’t only working on Star Wars, but also on another project, and Electronic Arts is “Very Excited” by what she is gonna be able to do on that front. While they can’s comment on rumors (like the Star Wars game being open world), EA is excited that Raymond is part of the organization and really looking forward to what she and her team will be able to do.
The writer believes that the Visceral Games project – which is rumored to be about Han Solo – is going to be slated for a 2017 release. Speculation aside, Battlefront will be playable at this year’s Gamescom, which runs from August 5-9. We’ll be sure to cover whatever information they reveal there.
Grant has been a fan of Star Wars for as long as he can remember, having seen every movie on the big screen. When he’s not hard at work with his college studies, he keeps himself busy by reporting on all kinds of Star Wars news for SWNN and general movie news on the sister site, Movie News Net. He served as a frequent commentator on SWNN’s The Resistance Broadcast.
I find it extremely unlikely that Visceral’s title will be playable at GamesCon. I believe it’s more likely EA will mention it somehow and provide further details, or in the best case scenario they will show us a teaser.
Sorry, I worded that poorly. I meant to say that Battlefront was going to be playable.
Let me fix that.
I hope EA doesn’t intend to only focus future games on the upcoming films. Movie games very rarely ever turn out good, and there’s so many different ways you can take Star Wars. I’d love to see new, original ideas, as well as canonical continuations of older Star Wars games. Such as x-wing, Jedi knight etc. there’s so much potential with Star Wars, and I don’t want to see any of it go to waste.
They’ve said they aren’t going to take the route of making games that are direct adaptations of the movies. The best you’re probably going to get are the Disney Infinity expansions, Battlefront, and *possibly* a LEGO Star Wars title.
You’re correct, I actually forgot that they had mentioned in the past that they would avoid direct adaptations. Disney infinity will have that covered well enough anyways, like you said. Can’t wait to hear more on visceral’s game though. I’ve been wanting a free roaming smuggler adventure game for quite a while, and if that’s what they’re making, I’ll be a very happy camper!
…oh yeah, wanna buy some DLCs?
You don’t want to sell me DLC.
I don’t want to sell you DLC.
You want to go home and rethink your life.
I want to go home and rethink my life *gets up and leaves*
I actually enjoyed the Revenge Of The Sith Game, it was pretty fun. I remember the phantom menace game a bit but I also remember Jedi Power Battles being more fun. However that might be warped nostalgia at this point lol
I’ve recently played both of those games, its a bit of nostalgia in there but they’re good games. Lol your not crazy
It’s the closest we ever got to Super Phantom Menace. If anyone has any 16 bit skills, I’d gladly pay you to make early 90’s version games of all the PT films complete with midi soundtrack. I’d love to see them for the new trilogy too. Those were what got me back into the saga after Star Wars was dead from 1986-1991.
Ea having exclusive rights to star wars games is a loss for gamers. We’re doomed to be at their DLC fueled mercy. Lack of competition breeds stagnation
Things were better when LucasArts handed out licensing on a game by game basis.
Yeah? Tell that to Battle For Naboo…. Blegh.
Honestly the last years in lucasarts care werent good either.
With the new “Legacy” Update for Knights of the old republic 2 being released over a decade after the game launched. My bet is that was Disney’s way of revamping attention to the series. I bet they are making or gonna make a Kotor3. If that’s the case, I can die happy 🙂
I’d rather see a remmake/reboot, intended to fit the new Canon. It would also give them an opportunity to fix the games and bring them up to date… KotoR 1 doesn’t even have widescreen support..
I doubt very much that we’ll see any Old Republic era games until they’ve started making headway on the timeframe in the movies and TV shows, now that everything that is released is considered canonical. But on the plus side, it does mean that there is most likely going to be a load of movies coming out eventually based in that era, though! 🙂
Need an updated rogue squadron/flight sim. Image that with today’s tech.
And with proper 32 player or more battles…. that would be amazing.
VR is coming, let’s have a rogue squadron for oculus please!!!!!!!!! We could all be flying x wings!
Man, i hate Ea.
Not buying.
No bots (on main maps).
And a host of other reasons.
Out of everything I’ve seen of the new Battlefront so far, Hoth Walker Assault is the only map I would want to play… and that’s still been ruined by jetpacks, bubble shields, and pointless heroes.
I like EA. the battlefield series is their best. I think battlefront is gonna be one of the best games of the year other than fallout 4. I think we need this game to focus on boba get not Han Solo. I loved bounty hunter and if they could do that now with boba then it’s perfect
We are fans, so the formula is:
FAN × HYPE = EXPECTATIONS ÷ E.A. – RESPECT FOR FANS = TODAY’S NEW STAR WARS GAMING ERA (REMAINDER D.L.C.)
You forgot to square root with
ANONYMOUS MORON
That should take you down to zero
You like Dice not Ea.
Yea that’s what I meant. DICE
I like turtles
Visceral’s Battlefield Hardline is a good reason for anyone who values their money at all to stay away from their project.
