UPDATE 2! Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Toy Catalog Leaks!

Daisy Ridley

The toy leaks continue – in addition to all the toys that have popped up in the past week, a picture of Hasbro’s take on Rey and her speeder have just been found.

Rey's Speeder

Her face is very clearly covered with this particular image and with the action figure itself. I get the feeling that the movie is going to introduce the character in a way that will lead to a “that badass is actually a girl” kind of surprise – something along the lines of “Boushh” being revealed to be Leia in Return Of The Jedi.

UPDATE 1!

Those of you whom have followed our Twitter feed may have noticed that we retweeted a user who found three more figures – two aliens and BB-8.

But that’s not all. Take a look at this collage of all of the LEGO minifigs to come out of the first wave of The Force Awakens sets:

LEGO TFA Cast There’s bound to be more “unofficial announcements” between now and Force Friday (along with – hopefully – an actual official announcement). Stay tuned as we learn more about these toys coming forward.

UPDATE 2!

Apparently, the toy catalog for Force Friday leaked out. There are too many images to post individually, so I’ll instead embed an Imgur gallery of the goods. (Whoever made this – thank you!)

Hasbro Force Friday Catalog

So, what’s to learn from all of this? We now know that toys from all three trilogies – along with Rebels – will be represented in varying capacities, although The Force Awakens is obviously the primary focus of the marketing campaign. The figure pack that includes BB-8 features a character only known as “Unkar’s Thug”, a name which might sound familiar if you looked at the LEGO leaks from earlier. The thug’s underling apparently captures BB-8 at some point – and if the character’s inclusion in Rey’s LEGO set is of any indication, Rey rescues the droid after scuffling with the thug.

LEGO TFA Set 1

As far as the other new figures for The Force Awakens go, Finn gets a desert landspeeder and Poe gets his own X-wing. A “Battle Action” Millennium Falcon set featuring a Nerf dart launcher is also another new surprise. The Micromachines also feature a few glimspses at some new ships.

I highly doubt they are going to do the “badass is actually a girl” thing, taht trope is older than dirt… and she was revealed in teh trailer… and with that outfit there really is no hiding it.

I don’t think it’d stop them from doing it in her introduction. They did the same thing with Quorra in Tron: Legacy, in spite of the character being visibly advertised as a girl in advance.

I think it’ll be Finn who is surprised about her skills when they meet. I’m very stoked for a female lead. If you guys think females can’t be bad ass I’ve got two words for you… Sigourney Weaver. And after Luke trains Rey for episode 8 she’s going to really kick some ass.

Did Leia kick ass? She was a damsel in distress in one movie, a leader who becomes a damnsel in distress in the second and a damsel in distress who takes the back seat to get injured in the third.

I kind of disagree with your opinions of V & VI.

In Empire, sure she was held hostage to lure Luke, but so was Han, Chewie and Threepio … she was not uniquely filling the role of damsel in distress. And in Jedi she was never in distress at all … she choked the frak outta Jabba the first chance she had. Likewise, with the Ewoks, she wasn’t in distress they just thought she was. She had a better grip on the situation than any of the men.

And, yeah, she’s a badass. Even in ANH, she resists torture, lies to the Empire’s collective face regardless of the risk and takes initiative when the rescue begins. “Some rescue.”

She a tough, no-nonsense kinda gal who is not afraid of anyone, even Vader (“Darth Vader, only you could be so bold.”) or Tarkin (“Governor Tarkin, I should have expected to find you holding Vader’s leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board.”)

Or, as someone else once said:

Until Luke got involved, she was the only Skywalker taking on the empire herself, without Jedi training. But she was royalty and had some kind of training.

America includes North, Central and South(To be specific)… “America” is a “melting pot” nation made up of every culture and influence available. Ex. Brittish(Mother culture)French revolution(influenced American Revolution), Mexican “Vaquero” or “Cowboy” , “Western” culture in the southern states etc.

          • August 21, 2015 at 9:21 am

For someone who is such a fan of America and so invested in its influences, your history is a bit wonky. American Revolution: 1765-76, French Revolution: 1789-99 (or thereabouts).

Personally, I don’t think the accents in Star Wars should primarily be American just because American audiences think their country is awesome. Other people think that of their countries and cultures as well, and the melting pot thing is really a global one now (or rather the salad bowl thing). Plus, American audiences have done fine with British actors and accents in the past – see GoT, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit etc. So I’d rather have everyone speaking naturally and focus on their acting instead of on faking an accent.
The only reason someone should speak with an American accent in the new movie is if their characters grew up with parents who speak with an American accent and if they haven’t been away from them for more than a year, because their accent then could have changed in a new environment.

It was the Scientific revolution of France that had an influence: Rene Decartes who in 1620’s revolutionized western philosophy. That in turn with the help of others(british philosophers etc.) planted the seed of philosophical change which eventually resulted in the said political revolutions. So what Anon said was “true from a certain point of view”

I agree that accents don’t matter. But what anon is saying is that “American” accents resemble many parts of the world. It’s not a pro-nation thing but a fact that many people around the world influence what many people regard as “American accents.” That is all. I prefer the “British” over many of these so called “American” accents. Leia’s character spoke with a slitghty british accent during ANH because she was in London school of drama for a while. It was great.

Well tough, that’s what you’re getting thanks to Kathleen Kennedy and those in Disney above her. It’s the mandate. Girl Power. And the same for Rogue One too. It’s in all the adverts, all the sitcoms and drama’s too – Man = Stupid, Woman = Powerful and embarassing Man. Or helping him up from the dirt. If it wasn’t so obvious and mandated I’d accept it. It’d be OK. The fact that it probably wasn’t a major factor in the original Episode 7 idea, and has been STAMPED onto that script from Disney that we must have a powerful girl lead, completely spoils the entire film for me. And I’m not being sexist. My opinion would still stand if Disney said: “We want a packet of Salt and Vinegar crisps to be the powerful lead in this film. Make it so.” Perhaps people would then like to create a new term, and label me Crispist, Saltist or Vinegarist? I think Fisher held her own quite well in the original three films, everyone was kinda equal.

You sound like a child… Is it really that inconceivable that the writers could have thought ‘huh, a female protagonist would really serve this narrative well…’??? TFA has two male leads and a female, just like the original trilogy. Was A New Hope too feminist for you as well?

if the main protaganist had been a young white male ‘skywalker’ then there would have been a comparrison to both luke and anakin from the offset and the series would be dubbed and indeed seem ‘tired and without new ideas’ I think making the main sky walker character female is a good move, there have been six starwars films, none of which have had a decent female in it. people say leia was a good female lead, but all she does is act feisty, she’s definatly a damsel in distress type. and that suits the films fine but I’d like to see something else within the star wars universe, we’ve never even seen a female jedi within the main characters.

          You overlook Leia’s progressiveness.

While she was certainly fashioned in the mold of a damsel in distress, she never shied from using a blaster, fearlessly faced down the likes of Vader and Tarkin, went on dangerous missions from the start of the trilogy, endured torture to keep the Rebellion safe, killed Jabba the Hutt herself with her own strength and a chain, put Han in his place several times and was a leader in the Rebellion.

Feminism done right doesn’t really do most of the things you talk about. Feminism is an important part of our cultural development, but the extreme feminists (aka “feminazis”) give the movement a bad name. It seems like that’s what you’re describing.

If this movie has feminist overtones but does it right, my guess is that most people won’t even notice, and if they do, they won’t be offended.

In early drafts of SW the character that would become Luke was female. A female lead was always in the ether.

As others have said Leia was a very progressive character also.

Also, lets not go down the road of misogyny on top of the vomit-inducing racism around here. You sound like scared little boys when you bash feminism. You clearly dont understand feminism if you think it is about making a female lead in SW. Real feminism is a benefit to all, and if you don’t understand what I mean go do some reading about the effects of patriarchy on females and males alike.

I expect to get railed for this post, but know that this is all I’m saying on the subject.

Wrong. All the early drafts had a male lead. The idea of a female lead comes from the Ralph McQuarrie concept poster. So yeah, at one point Lucas was playing with the idea of a female lead, but it never made it into any of the scripts.

Rey, who may very well be the main star, does not get a 12 inch posable dall? …. And yet Darth vader gets one and he’s not even in the movie except aas a dead helmet?

It almost seems Disney is dissing girls… again.

I’m not happy with the look of any of these new figures, the quality has declined in the last year, moreso since the double packs with limited articulation and detail-it looks like Disney/Hasbro are pushing this cheaper style into the full range now, I hope they aren’t still going to ask the £11 they’ve been charging for the Black series 3.5 inch for this new crap. That said, I’ll probably still buy at least some of it.

The figures were at their peak during the 30th anniversary range, that may have been a few years ago now, but those figures cost half as much as the last series, even the plastic on the last range of figures felt cheaper (more bendy and articulation wasn’t great).

I was just noticing that Rey is very pale considering she lives on, and possibly grew up on, a planet that at least where we find her, is a desert.

I realize that she is British and her skin tone is what it is, but to me, it would be better filmmaking to have at least giver her a bit of a tan. Even if she covers most her body for protection, we see that at least sometimes her lower legs and face are exposed to the sun.

I know, it’s just a film, and a space fantasy ( not sci-if ) at that. I just thought it odd that a light skinned person in a desert environment would look the part. But, I guess Luke and co. weren’t all that dark back in the day either.

I have spent months in the desert. During that time i got very dusty and found that after a shower a lot of what I thought was tan was actually dust which stopped me tanning. Also you will notice that rey is covered up which would obviously block out the sun and prevent any tanning

Which might prove that Rey is not really from there.. As her genes and melanin count in her skin are concerned… storywise.

Leia was pretty bad-ass in the OT, even if she was written to be the damsel-in-distress. It was obviously meant to be ironic and challenge the expectations of the audience- as was the sarcastic banter between Han and Leia.

Although that motif has been overdone in recent years, it would follow a well-established tradition in this franchise to make the lead female character tough as nails. What’s new is that it looks like Rey is our, “Luke”- the lead character and main protagonist.

I look forward to this approach, actually. It could prove to be a refreshing way to view the SW Universe. The new Mad Max (and even the original ‘Alien’ series) proved to me that a female character can be written to be more than a victim or a companion.

I say, bring on the ladies!!!!

Rey a smart street orphan mixed with a bit of the junkyard scavenger Solo from Legacy’s Wanted series.

So is Teedo at the village when it get’s attacked at the start?

The other speeder in the chase scene with the thugs appears to be the same one that comes with a figure of Finn.

These are kids toys! sorry to all the adults with disposable incomes, but the kids playing with these and having seen the movie won’t give a flying f**k and will be busy running around making blaster noises, hiding Finn in a sandbox and zooming Rey around their patio while their friends shoot missiles at them from a TIE fighter.
Maybe nostalgia under glass works for some, but grown men/women griping about a toy they are never going to play with is baffling.

I still have all my original Star Wars toys, granted it’s in storage but my two sons will be the proud owners of old and new Star Wars toys in the coming year or so, they’re still little fellas. I will get more joy out my old toys getting down on the carpet seeing my kids creating new worlds for themselves. That’s what Star Wars is from me, that will bring back so many memories.
