How Many Easter Eggs can you Find in the 360 Video from Star Wars: The Force Awakens?

Unkar Thugs

A few days ago Lucasfilm teamed up with Facebook and released new 360 degree video experiences, riding Rey’s speeder through the desert landscape of Jakku. Our readers and Cantina members spotted multiple Easter Eggs in the video and we decided to make a compilation with them. Have you found any?

Here is what we found so far, thanks to our Cantina members thehiredgun and entourage:

First the folks from the title image. Initially I thought they are Unkar’s thugs:

Thugs

But then I looked at the desert speeder toy that looks identical with this speeder and I am not so sure about that. They look different but are probably from the same group (click the images for bigger versions):

Speeder

The desert scavenger:

Scavenger

He is definitely this guy, shown at SDCC:

SDCC 02

Some people are speculating that this is the character played by Simon Pegg, but it appears that the body of this creature is much bigger than the one Pegg is playing:

Teebo and his Luggabeast:

Luggabeast

You can’t mistake these guys. Probably my favorite design from the movie so far:

Teebo

A crashed TIE.

Downed Tie

Could this be Finn’s TIE?

Crahed TIE

A downed AT-AT:

A Crashed X-Wing:

BB-8 peeking at the end of the video:

There are probably more. Have you found any?

Curiously one of our readers shared the following with us:

Friend who works for Disney told me: no one has cracked the HUGE Easter Egg in Jakku 3D. Keep looking!!!

We will, stay tuned…

If you look on the star destroyer it says “the plot of this movie sucks” in graffiti, don’t know if anyone caught that.

About the 36 Second mark, when you see the crashed TIE Fighter, there appears to be what looks like a Mon Calamari cruiser behind it…anyone else see this?

Yep! Definitely see a Mon Cal cruiser.

so im guessing the battle of jakku took place like right after or during ROTJ.

I believe that the new book “Lost Stars” says that the battle of Jakku happened about a year or so after ROTJ. Just FYI 🙂

At the very beggining another type of speeder zooms past on your left – seems to be letting off some type of smoke and goes off behind the other side of the star destroyer. Anybody know what that is?
Then right after the unkar thugs, there’s two ships flying in th sky. looks like x-wings, and for a second the one behind looks like the Falcon!

Was gonna mention the smoking speeder too! I took a screenshot.

At 16 seconds in the front-view (bottom middle square), you can see 2 ships flying together or maybe it is one chasing the other. Maybe it’s the Millennium Falcon being chased by a TIE Fighter. Or it could be 2 TIE Fighters flying together. Maybe One with Finn and one with Poe. Or some other combination of pilots. Who knows?

When you pass the Star Destroyer near the end . the outcropping of twisted metal resembles part of Han Solos face frozen in carbonite with the pained expression. I may be imagining it, but it’s as good a guess at what the big easter egg is as any I guess? Anyone ? Bueller, bueller?

The Battle of Jakku was a space battle and all those ships crashed onto the planet. Just so ‘ya know.

That doesn’t entirely explain the AT-AT which is a ground unit. There’s just gotta be a story there…

I’m guessing the Battle of Jakku isn’t the only battle that’s taken place on the battle by the time of the movie.

Read Lost Stars. There was a space battle AND land battle going on simultaneously. There were also already inhabitants on Jakku, as mentioned in the book, but not many.

Then I’m guessing they were trying to invade the planet or something. Does it say it in Lost Stars?

The ATs were likely stored inside the ships. Or dropped off

90% of the theories I have seen around MVS have suggested he is Reys mentor.

And by most accounts there doesnt seem to have been inhabitants on the planet prior to the battle.

      • September 26, 2015 at 7:01 am
        Permalink

Then that tells us quite a bit about it’s inhabitants. Either they came from a nearby world [and were wealthy enough to do so] or they make their living scavenging the entire galaxy. Another theory being that they are the survivors/offspring of the original ships [as much as one can survive falling from orbit and crashing into the desert.] if that’s the case, where does old man fit in?

Has anyone noticed that this is a different star destroyer than the one in the second teaser? It’s crashed at a different angle, and all the debris that you pass in this 3d thing isn’t in the shot in the teaser.
This might just have been done just to put a ton of stuff together for a fun video but might also imply something else, Like that there is more than one star destroyer that has crashed on Jakku? Maybe an entire fleet?
Also, it seems like where the video starts, you also come flying out of something that looks like the structure of a smaller star destroyer type ship.

I think this video is proof that CG will be used more than thought in this film [this is neither good nor bad, it is merely a technical difference]. I don’t believe this environment was rendered purely for a facebook video, I at first thought it was for the Battle-feild/front/whatever you call it video-game, but it’s Star Wars company itself doing it. What this means is somewhere along the way, at some point, they saw the need to render an environment in CG [My money’s on the Millennium Falcon chase sequence], and, having the environment handy, threw us a bone. My take on it. 🙂

I’m hoping they just made this for the video, which is also the most likely option in my opinion

      • September 26, 2015 at 8:43 am
        Permalink

I don’t see how that’s simpler or why you hope that. As I pointed out, this was most likely used for the chase-scene, i.e, it’s not going to be shown that closely. Also the amount of detail goes down sharply in covered areas such as underneath the Star Destroyer, suggesting, to me, that this is designed for use in aerial shots.

Maybe, but I really figured that they’d find a way to things like this with practical effects, just because they were making such a big deal about it. I guess. we’ll have to wait until the movie comes out to know for sure.

          • September 27, 2015 at 6:32 am
            Permalink

This will probably be used in the background [probably with motion/lens blur] in crazy scenes. For quiet scenes where people are just walking around normally, I’m sure – no, there ARE sets that exist that have already appeared in official photos. So I’m not worried, they’re focused on getting the best look without breaking the [albeit big] budget. As a fast-paced long distance background, this’ll do nicely.

I think the easter egg is the two ships entering the picturee in the upper left corner at 0:23. Looks lile a TIE chasing another, and just before it exits the frame there is some shooting, seems like?
