UPDATE 2! The Full Trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens Coming on October 19th?

Kylo RenDuring this year’s SDCC, J.J. Abrams revealed that the full trailer for The Force Awakens will be released during the fall. Astronomically the fall starts in September and ends in December. There were lot’s of reports and rumors about when we could expect the trailer to hit, with the most common one being around the mid of October, during the premiere of Star Wars: Rebels Season 2. Then new reports emerged that suggested the trailer could be pushed back to November, but now we’re hearing that the trailer could be just around the corner, only 2 weeks away…

October 6th, 2015

For some time now we’ve been trying to uncover the release date for the full trailer. Unfortunately our sources were not allowed to reveal it. Still we managed to get some tiny bits and pieces like, the trailer wouldn’t be released on October 2nd with The Martian or on October 30th, which was the date Disney bought Lucasfilm, and we’ve learned that the trailer won’t hit on any Friday in October.

We’ve also found out that until the trailer is released no new footage from The Force Awakens will be shown, and that the first full trailer will actually be the last one. No more trailers after that, probably just a few TV spots and that’s it.

Watch Out, It's Kylo Ren!

Now one of our readers sent us something very interesting that we have a good reason to believe in. From Dave Olden:

I spoke with friend who manages a chain Multiplex in Victoria, BC. He confirmed that IMAX tickets for Star Wars the Force Awakens will be available for online purchase 12:00 am, Monday October 19. He first confirmed the IMAX ticket availability, which he added would apply to all shows, not just IMAX. (If you can buy for one, you can buy for all).

That’s when he told me, verbally, that The 19th of October is when we get the new trailer. I asked, “Is that for SURE?” And he nodded and said, “Yup.”
He also told me this means for North America (Canada + US), not just here.

As I said we have another reason to believe that October 19th is indeed the date when the trailer will be officially released, but still keep in mind that this is not 100% confirmed. Apart from that reason, the release date also matches with the previous rumors about the advance ticket sales.

It’s very uncommon to release a trailer on Monday, but I think Disney has proven that they don’t care much about these things. Also we still believe that the trailer will be announced a few days before it premieres, and it would make perfect sense if they do that during the Rebels Season 2 premiere on October 14th. I won’t be surprised if we even get a teaser of the trailer on that day.

So there you have it. I have a good reason to believe that the first and only The Force Awakens trailer will debut on October 19th, when the sales of the tickets will begin. Are you ready?

UPDATE!

October 10th, 2015

Our friends at Schmoes Know are backing us up, reporting that according to their sources the trailer will indeed drop on October 19th. They also say that there will be an announcement the day before:

Other sites are reporting that the trailer should be released online on October 16th, but this is not what we’ve heard. We continue to stand behind our report for an October 19th release of the first and last The Force Awakens trailer.

UPDATE 2!

October 15th, 2015

More and more sites are reporting that the trailer will be released on October 19th, as we first told you 10 days ago. Here are some more possible details from io9 about the trailer’s air time:

We’ve heard from multiple sources that here’s what’s happening with Star Wars: The Force Awakens this weekend.

First, we’ll get to see the official one sheet on Sunday morning.

Second, the trailer will debut Monday night, roughly around 8pm EST.

Third, tickets will go on sale very soon after that, likely around 8:30pm EST. They should be available at most, if not all, ticketing sites and theaters.

We’re almost there. Stay tuned for an official announcement about the trailer in the following days.

You would think that the closer we get to a film’s release date, the more rumors and news we would get..

This is one of the longest news-free droughts we’ve had since production started, and the darned thing is only 70 days away.

No they want a trailer. Nobody’s said they want anything else – nothing to do with knowing everything about a movie before watching it – to say they want that is just ridiculous – they just want a trailer. It’s time!

And WHY is that? Why do they want a new trailer? To see new footage, to see what the story is about!! NEW INFORMATION!!! It’s only two months away, be patient and go to the theater NOT KNOWING and be surprised then. You kids this days, you just NEED to know more…

You guys wont be negative about it or give a darn bout any cantina conversation when you’re sitting in the theater on the 18th. 😛 To become more negative about a movie simply because you havent seen any more on it isnt really the movie’s fault itself. i cant picture people in the theater on the 18th saying, well, they didnt show us a trailer soon enough so i dont like this as much. Not bashing you or anyone lol im just as anxious man, believe me, we’re just soooooooo close now. hang in there…

Yeah, you are absolutely right. I personally actually like that they wait quite long to release, and that they don’t release too much. I don’t want to know to much once I’m in the teather.
But I’m extremely exited for it nonetheless! Just hope they don’t reveal to much in it.

The problem is the lack of information is creating a lot of negative hype, countered by unbridled hope/enthusiasm… why is E7 being treated so differently? Is it because it will suck balls, or be so awesome it will blow minds? There seems to be no middle ground. Why can’t E7 be good, E8 be great, and E9 belt it out of the park? Internet generation has no stamina?

I can’t fathom why there are no movie posters let alone a full trailer at this point. If you are not a Star Wars “fan” you likely have no idea this movie exists.

    • October 6, 2015 at 7:31 pm
      Permalink

Its because they are relying on people to see it over an extended period of time, the movie will probably be in theaters for over 30 weeks. There is no need to push everyone to watch it on opening weekend, not that important. The main pre-release campaign will be short and sweet.

      • October 6, 2015 at 7:37 pm
        Permalink

Not even a movie poster in the theater? You know so when you go see whatever movie you’re going to see this weekend, you see a Star Wars The Force Awakens poster. There is a difference of ramping up efforts and nothing. There are so many Star Wars commercials for toys and cartoons that people think Star Wars is just an ongoing 24/7 Disney milking a namesake. Not showing a trailer or movie poster has nothing to do with a movie being in a theater for 30 weeks.

I’m a fan, I run around telling people all the time how I took time off work and plan on seeing at midnight. Most people I mention it to have no idea a movie is coming or that there is even a teaser for it. There are toys, cartoons, books, among many other things that have been year round since at least Episode 3. It is easy for someone to overlook a new movie that has very little promotion. Because most people aren’t “fans” they are just movie goers. Movie goers as a whole see trailers from the movies themselves or commercials. They see posters promoting a movie coming out sometimes even a year in advance. Everyone will have their own unique perspective of what is reasonable. Just as much as some people are freaking out, freaking out over people freaking out, or over the fact that some have no idea the movie is coming out can be because of many reasons. But one would think two months before a movie releases that the general public would be aware, this simply really isn’t the case with The Force Awakens. They are riding that line of genius and pure stupidity too close in my opinion.

I went to Toys R Us the other day to pick up a Lego C-3PO with a red arm, and despite the huge BB8 and Kylo Ren display all round the entrance, there was nobody even browsing around the Star Wars area. There were plenty of parents with their kids, but the kids just kept walking right past without even stopping. It’s like they were oblivious to it all.
Besides a couple of nerds at work, nobody else I know is aware there’s a film coming out – just my wife who’s sick of me going on about it.

I totally understand – I have that problem too. It happened to me during all of the prequels. Recently I was reminded of it while watching The Martian, knowing that certain things would go wrong because I had seen them in the trailer. I’ve decided not to watch the final trailer either – whether I’ll be strong enough to stop myself watching it is another thing though…

Considering their strategy thus far, I don’t think they’d be THAT stupid to make a trailer that ruins the movie. It’s gonna be like Teaser 2 but with more of the characters talking. Doubt they’ll show Luke and if they show Leia it will be for a glimpse. Han might get some time though.

I respect those people that say they don’t want to watch any trailers or anything, but I am certainly not one of them. I think trailers and magazine exclusives and other things like that enhance the experience. For those people that avoided everything the magic of the movie is only going to last for however long the movie is. But for me, I have been riding the anticipation high since last November. I don’t look at spoilers or TV spots, just officially released materials. And I disagree that seeing the trailers spoils the movie. I just watched the Martian and not once did I think that I was losing out on something because I had seen part of the movie in the trailer. If a movie is good it’ll suck you in and you won’t even notice. Just my opinion of course.

        • October 7, 2015 at 12:37 am
          Permalink

I couldn’t agree more- for me, the aniticipation IS part of the movie. Waiting for trailers, standing in line geeking out with friends, etc. is all part of a long chain of fun. Even if the movie sucks (which I really doubt) I have already had hours of fun speculating and watching teasers to make TFA a positive experience. If I skip all that and the movie isn’t as good as I hope, then I’m just left with an OK Star Wars flick to rewatch instead of all these memories. I totally see why people like the pure unspoiled experience, but for me I say bring on the trailers!

That’s what I’m saying! I mean of course one in a million trailers give away the whole movie but that is a risk I am always willing to take. And I mean if the movies biggest secrets and surprises are in the trailers than it probably isn’t even worth seeing anyway.

I personally think that this whole secrecy and the fact that they haven’t showed us much is pretty genius. they are getting the reaction they want out for all of us fans. we are dying to see more and find out more. but I truly believe they really doing this FOR us,in the sense that they don’t want to spoil their own movie and want us fans to really be surprised. in a sense they are thinking about us before they are thinking about non fans…let me explain; I do know a lot of people that don’t know Star Wars TFA is coming out or that there was even one coming out in the first place. I agree only “fans” know…but I think that was part of the strategy…this movie was made for us FANS…damn it Kylo Ren I a fan boy…this is all in the strategy. they want US the fans to go watch this movie opening nigt/day/weekend and not have to eat surrounded by people that only went to see it After they saw a hype for it. what is crazy about all this is that even with this…they will still make a lot of money opening night….and THEN…movie goers that aren’t necessarily fans will help build more money and revenue for the film…but not before the real fans for which this movie was made for

Trailer or not I’m seeing this movie. Just sucks saying to a friend, can’t wait for The Force Awakens and you get a “what the heck is that” response. Fans are going to see it regardless. It is not genius if people other than fans don’t show up to see the movie because they had no idea it was released. To me it’s quite the opposite of your comment. Putting a trailer out will not effect people like me in the slightest, it would on the other hand hopefully make people who are unaware… aware. There needs to be an awakening of the trailer. My next movie may be Hunger Games or Spectre, both of which I’ve seen trailers for… a long time ago. If I wasn’t a fan of Star Wars, the movie might as well not exist.

You’ve nailed it. Put the damn trailer out already so I can actually find somebody that knows that another Star Wars movie is coming out in just over 2 months! I don’t know anyone at work (which is a crew of 60 people) any friends, family, neighbours, ANYONE that has a clue that TFA exists. My 6 year old daughter is a huge Star Wars fan (it’s in her DNA) and she’s dressing as Kylo Ren for Halloween. She’s telling me that everyone at school doesn’t know that a new SW movie is coming out and subsequently have no idea who Kylo Ren is. She’s now started to become less excited about seeing the movie because she can’t share her excitement with anyone else she knows except her 35 yr old fanatic father. She told me she’s dressing as Kylo Ren no matter what though because he’s awesome!

Two short teaser trailers and a bunch of toys is not enough to make the call of forking over the money for a ticket, at least for the average movie-goer. That may fly for members of the actual fandom, especially the more hardcore ones, but the majority of the masses kinda need a bit more to go on for a decision like that.

      • October 9, 2015 at 8:04 pm
        Permalink

The “we” being Star Wars fans who read Star wars websites on a daily basis are barely a percentage point of the people who are expected to buy the vast majority of tickets for these movies. It’s poor marketing strategy to just expect the random, non-obsessed moviegoer to just buy tickets sight unseen to a movie they know next to nothing about beyond “it’s not the prequels.”

  • October 6, 2015 at 9:14 pm
    Permalink

Why would you put the trailer out on the same day as pre-sales AFTER pre-sales go live? You would use the trailer to promote pre-sales, not pre-sales to promote the trailer. This doesn’t make marketing sense.

    Also:

“That’s when he told me, verbally,”
    “And he nodded”

    What?

    • October 6, 2015 at 9:25 pm

The initial days of pre-sales will be targeted at the die-hard SW fans. The loyal fans who don’t need convinced by a full trailer to part with their cash.

This. I think it’s wise to wait for pre-sales to go live before releasing the trailer so that when people DO see the trailer they can immediately go, “TAKE MY MONEY!” and buy tickets. In fact, I expect to see a “tickets now on sale” tagline at the end of the trailer. If you release it early and then do presales the next day some people will inevitably forget.

        • October 7, 2015 at 4:10 am
          Permalink

No… that’s not what any marketer would ever do. You either use the trailer to promote the pre-sales, or you don’t. You don’t do it this way. This makes no sense. Which is why it won’t happen this way.

          • October 10, 2015 at 8:11 pm
            Permalink

Couldn’t disagree with you more. Anybody who is going to buy presale tickets already knows the date, time, and theatre they are going to buy those tickets for. The trailer is to promote the new movie for the average movie goer, not the diehards. It will do absolutely nothing to the amount of tickets that are pre sold. Furthermore, ever think Disney is throwing the loyal, lifelong fans a bone by doing it this way? We know about the movie and the presale, which will equate to an opening weekend of movie goers who LOVE the Star Wars Universe, giving those who are truly dying to see this movie the opportunity to be the first ones in the theatre. This will be followed by the average movie goer who just wants to see a good movie and what will hopefully be massive free marketing by word of mouth .

Just my opinion of course. I thought the movie that started it was watchable but not good. I have seen about 12 episodes of the show over the years and everytime was bored. The only ones I kind of liked were the Ashoka getting accused and vindicated. But she always bothered me because they tried to make her sexy. Why would a Jedi be sexy?

Especially an apparently underage jedi… I’d say about 25% of the episodes are great and actually help redeem the prequels. 25% are absolutely terrible and reinforce everything that was wrong with the prequels. 50% are just okay.

I loved the Clone Wars series. Its what the prequels should have been. Especially who Anakin should have been. It definitely had some ups and downs though. My only major issue with it was it had wildly different tones and storylines quite randomly. One second its great episodes for kids, then the next its better for adults. They were trying to hit 2 different demographics at the same time. I have watched the whole series and have made my own list of episodes that I show my 6 yr old daughter. I edit out the jedi always getting tortured, clones having to decide whether or not to execute eachother etc. The darker stuff I love. The kids have Rebels now. Bring back Clone Wars and the darker stories and themes for the adults.

I showed your comments to my mother, my two sisters, and two friends, and oddly they all said the same thing even though several of them don’t know each other, which was that one of the things they hate most is men who seem to think their bodies are there only for the purpose of turning men on.

Sister #1: Let me guess, he probably also freaks out when a woman breastfeeds in public, right?

Friend #1: If a bare midriff excites him so much, he might be better off in Amish country. Or the Middle East.

Friend #2: God help his daughters.

So let me get this straight. . . my frustration that instead of respecting a strong woman character, they had to dress her like a pop star, and I am the one who think a woman’s body is only there to turn men on? I can’t wait to see the female world leader who flaunts her body. Actually I can, because I have far more respect for a woman who can know she is beautiful and can be recognized for her achievements and still be a stunner without trying to show as much skin as possible. Ashoka just continues the Anime style of female hero, where she can’t be a hero, unless she is sexualized.

How I am implied as a person who was turned on by it when expressing my disgust and dismay at the portrayal now just has me worried about your, and your family’s ability to read with comprehension. Why you are more impressed with a woman walking around in a midriff and daisy dukes than an accomplished woman dressed in an elegant outfit is beyond me, but like what you want.

At least my daughters are raised to think of all they can achieve, not simply using their bodies to get ahead in life. I want them to have worth, and be beautiful inside and out. I have zero issue with the female body, wear what ever the hell you want, at the pool, in public, in the board room. But if you try to achieve accomplishments through eroticism, you haven’t accomplished anything.

Completely baffled by the breastfeeding remark, but again, there is obviously not much comprehension going on. How anyone could infer that breastfeeding is sexual in any way concerns me about your sisters views on sexuality. Breastfeeding is a natural act of child rearing, why would I have any problem with that?

Make sure you write to Ms. Kennedy and let her know you expect Daisy Ridley’s character to wear nothing but a sports bra and under armour panties, taking selfies in the mirror. Christ almighty. Some people.

Diamonds Are Not Rare: Apply The Scarcity Principle To Create Demand

Perhaps the most impressive example of creating an artificial demand for something can be seen in the diamond business. Diamonds are not rare, they are horded in mass quantities by diamond companies like De Beers, and carefully doled out in limited quantities to keep the prices artificially high.

When something appears to be scarce, there is almost always a higher demand for the item, service, or goods. This is known as the Scarcity Principle in marketing and it plays on powerful human instinct to gather for the future.

Not the mystery box approach but there was a great deal of mystery regarding the prequels before the hype machine started. I think a lot of people who weren’t totally turned off by TPM thought things would get better in AOTC and that it would be the Empire of the trilogy when it really wound up being the worst film in the saga thus far which hurt the box office of ROTS even though it was better than both. I think III would have flopped had it not been the “last” film in the series and they didn’t soley rely on selling the film with characters like Chewie and Vader who had minute long cameos.

Going by RT is like citing something from The Daily Mirror or The Sun. III did better than II but these numbers are also not adjusted for inflation hence why Avatar holds the top spot. The original Star Wars would be the highest grossing one if whoever did that had basic math abilities or taken a business 101 class. Can’t really compare a 1 dollar ticket from the 70’s to a 12.50 from today now can you? Great affects the outcome don’t you think?

Rotten Tomatoes is trash. You get too many critics with agendas and it’s a binary system. I find that my tastes in movies align much more closely with IMDB’s rating system.

I completely agree. When movies like Revenge of the Sith get higher scores than movies like ant-Man, you know something is up. However, the fact that RotS even managed to get a higher score than RotJ (despite being much much worse) supports that TFA will only have to be decent to be hailed as one of the three best Star Wars movies.

Yeah, yeah. you keep telling yourself that, you irrational and delusional OT purist fanboy with misguided feelings of nostalgia (who is actually in the loud and vocal minority despite thinking otherwise). You just can’t handle the fact that the fanbase (and public in general) likes and enjoys ROTS better than ROTJ. Did you know that a couple of weeks ago there was a poll on SW.com asking folks to rank the SW movies from their most favorite to least favorite and the result was that ESB had the highest percentage of most favorite FOLLOWED BY ROTS as the one getting the second-highest votes? Well, now you know! Many fans in general list ROTS in their top two favorite SW movies (ESB & ROTS usually), if not, top three (usually ahead of ROTJ). But yeah, whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep well at night I suppose…

Um…okay. There’s absolutely no need to be so mean about it and call me a fanboy. Nor is there any reason to think that I’m driven by nostalgia. All I’m saying is this: RotS is generally regarded as not being better than any of the OT. I really don’t care what you have to say about it, or about weird fan polls, I just mean in general. Despite this, critics gave RotS a higher RT rating than RotJ and other great movies. Therefore, TFA won’t have to be that good to be seen as a critical success by the public and fans alike. Now stop being so salty.

Sorry, I think you replied to my comments before I went back to edit it in adding this comment: “Sorry that ROTJ had 1) spent too much time in Tatooine 2) Rehashed the idea of using another Death Star 3) Luke and Leia being siblings despite the kisses in the previous 2 movies (thus invoking thoughts of incest) and 4) did I mention Ewoks? lol. Also, ROTS ended up making $1,035,000 worldwide (after inflation); hardly qualifying on however you try to justify your opinion.”

Now that that is out of the way:

“RotS is generally regarded as not being better than any of the OT.”

Says who, loud and vocal haters like Simon Pegg? Hah, please! That’s the type of propaganda that the haters on the Internet continue to want people to believe just because it keeps getting parroted by them due to following other haters like sheep (instead of thinking for themselves). I don’t just see what I claim in polls; I see it on Star Wars facebook groups and pages (even outside of SW-related groups and pages) and on Twitter, and not just by hardcore Star Wars fans but the general public as well.

Like I said, whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep well at night…

            1. And the fight scene between Obi-Won and Anakin wasn’t too long and over the top? (Seriously, choreographed fighting on tiny flying droids over lava was only topped by LaBeouf’s fencing in I.J. and the Crystal Skull). 2. The main storyline was Anakin’s fall to the darkside and that whole process is still clear as mud. 3. Anakin and Padme’s interaction was so creepy that movie goers would prefer Luke and Leia’s incest. 4. I’ll take yub nub over “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

For what it’s worth to put my opinion forward… ROTS was only marginally better than AOTC. TPM was actually my favourite of the prequels. The only one that felt like a well rounded film and had a pretty epic lightsabre battle and climactic ending all round. The other two films are monstrosities. Look too clean and digital with way too much plastic CGI in the background and the most awful character development and boring dull characters in Anakin and Obi Wan. They’re pitiful vs the OT which was full of soul and character. That’s my OPINION. I think prequel lovers did simply grow up with the films, its their Star Wars, but those films also are competing with tons of great franchises that frankly have better films attached, say like all the Marvel movies. They’re a generation of people who perhaps just find it too hard to appreciate the look and feel of the OT the same way those of us who grew up with them can.

In my mind being as objective as possible the prequels are f’ing awful movies full stop, Anakins turn to the dark side was the most cack handed and frankly cringe worthy thing I’ve seen from such a big movie like this. To think that compares with the Bespin duel and revelation or Luke’s fight to turn his father back to the good side is comical in my mind. Anyway my opinion. I can’t tell people what they like or don’t like, but I just simply don’t understand how people can like these awful movies with sincerity… Blows my mind people are sitting watching ROTS on a regular basis and enjoying it.

Well said, David. I remember watching TPM in the movie theater and being genuinely impressed with the film until the first scene with Jar Jar. And I actually like Phantom Edit.

I think the Prequels are cult films with a small but intensely loyal following. And that’s ok, I guess. We all have movies we love because they came out at the right time and right moment in our lives for us to love them despite the quality of the movies. For me, it’s Dick Tracy (1990), for others it’s ROTS.

There’s no point arguing with me about Tracy, and there is no point arguing about ROTS. Plus, this original post was about TFA, so I guess we strayed off topic to debate this point.

I actually also believe TPM might be the best film, as an individual work, of the PT. But I also think its a throwaway film for the saga overall – the only really relevant thing that happens is Kenobi is named Anakin’s mentor and Palpatine is elected. Everything else is muddled at best, incoherent at worst. I had to read a 500 page non-canon book to understand the set up (Darth Plageuis).

I think most of us, PT Defenders and original fans alike, agree AOTC is the worst film (other than the Clone Wars). ROTS is the most important film, but also the most disappointing because it has what we were really excited for. If it was edited better, it would probably be on par with ROTJ. But the dialogue and overblown final battle scene just doesn’t let me rank it ahead of Mark Hamill’s performance in ROTJ. He’s fantastic throughout that film and the final space battle was incredible and still holds up. The slapstick humor after the first shot of ROTS dims that first scene a bit, just like the slog of ROTJ post-Tatooine.

The best thing you’ve said so far David is that Star Wars is competing against a ton of great movie franchises with a list of more solid films. So true. We have only gotten 6 films in 38 years so far and we have gotten 2 awesome, 2 good/ok, and 2 bad movies. (or 3 good and 3 bad whichever) That’s a crappy track record for the greatest movie franchise of all time. I am just saying that I am tired of having to always fast forward/skip past sections of (or whole movies) in the saga. We Star Wars fans deserve better than defending or explaining ewoks, incest, and confusing or rehashed plots. Or being subjected to bad acting, horrible characters (I am looking at you Jar Jar) bad scenes plot holes etc, etc (You can fill in way more here PT haters) I hope that Disney/Lucasfilm can give us 6 NEW good to great films that we can rewatch forever more and that introduce and hook a whole new generation of Star Wars fans for years to come.

It’s nice David to finally hear someone simply state their dislike of the Prequels with respect and citing things you disliked rather than screaming ‘Their f**king horrible PERIOD’ like so many others.I can’t believe the insane amount of people who comment on this site and all over the Internet screaming ranting and raving that their opinions are FACT. That other people’s thoughts or ideas are invalid, that you’re an idiot for liking the Prequels. That people who found enjoyment in them are gullible or stupid and shouldn’t be aloud to comment or even aloud to be on the internet etc!
The plastic CGI is as much a sign of the times and the technology level as the way it looked like someone jammed a polar bear arm on the end of a baseball bat and smacked Mark Hamill in the face with it in the Wampa attack on Hoth in TESB. Every year the CGI in movies gets better and better by leaps and bounds, making films from just the year prior already look ‘dated’. You know what doesn’t look dated with age? Not non plastic CGI or muppets or guys in makeup. Footage of real locations! I’m so happy their shooting the new movies at actual locations!! I live in Canada and it’s so insulting to see ‘snow’ scenes in movies using white sand and falling wax chips. As someone who has to live every day in snow and cold for 4-6 months of the year I know EXACTLY what real snow looks like falling or what it looks like when someone is walking in actual snow! It doesn’t leave footprints like a walk along the white sandy beaches of the Dominican Republic. (Sorry. Trust a Canadian to go on a rant about snow!) I traveled to BC 25 yrs ago and took photos of the Rocky Mts. 25 years later guess what? They still look like (faded) photos of actual mountains! Not dated plastic CGI or miniature toy models of them.

I think there is a point to be made about ROTS being the third best film… Though overall I’d agree with you.

Think about it in context, ROTS was comparatively well thought out. It has the best action, special effects, plot, etc, of the prequels by far. It’s the only one of the three with an actual meaningful and clear end-goal.

ROTJ, however, has some amazing scenes (Luke vs. Vader comes to mind), but it’s not as tight or cohesive as ANH or ESB. Too much padding and filler. The whole part with Jabba could have been cut out to no consequence if they just didn’t have Boba get away with Han in ESB. It was essentially just scrapped together to pad the running length, though they created iconic moments along the way.

ROTS is well done for what it is. ROTJ is sloppy for what it is. It’s like having poorly made lobster compared to well-made meatloaf. (None the less, what is good in ROTJ is leagues ahead of ROTS in my opinion)

I know a lot of people who’s favourite SW movie is ROTS. Friends, family, co-workers. They’re 10-15 yrs younger than me and the Prequels are what introduced them to Star Wars. They refer to it as THEIR Star Wars-as in the SW of their generation. They like the OT aswell, but see them as slower moving, at times boring, and the special effects really dated. (Which they are. The movies are old-it can’t be helped) I also know people my own age who grew up with the OT or were adults when they came out, who will still cite ANH and TESB as their favourites, BUT like ROTS better than ROTJ. Like me they enjoyed the first half of ROTJ but thought the second half wasn’t that great. They were let down by the rehashed story of the Death Star, were uncomfortable with (or laughed at) the Luke & Leia sibling/incest storyline, and thought that 3 foot teddy bears with sticks and stones defeating ‘a legion of the Empires best troops’ was rediculous and a terrible way to end an awesome trilogy of films. My parents said that when they and their friends left the theatre in 1983, they all agreed that ROTJ was the worst film of the OT. My Dad in particular disliked the Death Star rehash because he felt it took away something super special and important to his favourite SW film, ANH, and when teddy bears showed up in his SW movie, he suddenly felt like a 27 year old boob sitting in a theatre watching a movie meant for little kids.

As a side note, NONE of the OT generation or PT generation fans I’m refering to above have any idea that a new SW movie is coming out!! They’ve all been surprised that there is a new movie coming out when I’ve asked them if their excited about TFA. Show the damn trailer already!! Put up a poster! Something!! Let the past (non fanatical) fans know that you have a new movie coming out!!!

I’m in no way defending the late release of a full TFA trailer, but I don’t think they will approach Rogue One in the same way. Rogue One will be out only 5 months before Episode VIII that wait I wouldn’t think would be nearly as bad. Pending a major cliffhanger ending. I’m surprised that Disney isn’t attaching the trailer to, “Bridge of Spies”, since they are distributing that movie and it releases on the 16th. Not only would this guarantee that it was out ahead of the 19th when tickets go on sale, but I would think that it would boost sales to, “Bridge of Spies”, opening weekend.

They’re cutting it fine with the marketing on this film. So far only fans will really know it’s even happening with the lack of print and screen media.
For what is such an iconic franchise and the return of it’s original cast I would have expected much more sooner.

Indeed. It feels like Disney’s putting too much faith in the hype for the film. I get their intentions to show as little as possible, and I respect that, but this stubbornness may very well backfire into their faces and hurt the movie’s box office returns. I’d expect more from the company that wrote off Age of Ultron as a financial disappointment.

Yeah, they’re going to market the crap out of this. If they were showing LOTS of trailers (over two months before the film – as we are), I can also see all these people complaining that there is TOO MUCH coverage or that they showed too much of the film. I can hear the whining now about it.

I guess that’s why so many people not already invested heavily in the Star Wars franchise don’t seem to even know about the film’s existence, right? Disney’s far from flawless. They’ve proven they’re capable of screwing up. Remember Tomorrowland’s underperformance? Or how about John Carter’s? Disney can and has made mistakes before.

Canada, eh? (I’m sorry, I had to)
What exactly is a federal election in Canada? Like what government position(s) are being given?

In Canada, federal elections do two main things:

        1) Determine the Members of Parliament (MPs) that vote on things that affect the whole country.
        2) Determine the Prime Minister (Essentially the equivalent of president). Whichever party gets the most MPs elected has its leader become the Prime Minister.

Basically, since most Canadians don’t like the current Prime Minister (whose party has a majority of the seats with only 39% of the votes), everyone is really focused on this election. A lot of don’t care who wins so much as they want anyone new.

Sounds very much like a general election here in the UK when voting for a new parliament (albeit within a federal system). Our current parliament (the Tories) are also a majority party who were elected with only 39% of the national vote. Guessing Canada also has a first-past-the-post electoral system.

‘…They thought the new sets were just part of the Rebels series.’ <<<< And THERE it is right there. THIS I believe is the crux of the so-called "Marketing Strategy" with the movie- and it makes plenty of sense. Disney already knows that it can count on the legions of "aware" long-time fans to turn out (as well as, spread the word). In effect, we're doing a major portion of the marketing for them- for FREE. Some folks might label it as being "happenstance" or "coincidence", while others might call it what it actually is- Smart & Efficient (-not to mention, cost effective).

Obviously it is no coincidence that the Rebels cartoon season is starting back up at the same time as the rumored Theatrical Trailer release for VII and the pre-sale of tickets for it. Adult fans that have kids are gonna take them to see the movie whether or not the kid is aware of it's imminent arrival. Cha-ching. Parents and kids will go see the film multiple times (if it's indeed that entertaining) at either the desire of the adult or the beckoning of the child. Cha-ching. I believe that there hasn't been a hurry to market a full trailer before this time period simply because Disney figured that it wouldn't even have to…and correctly so.

Except in Terminator Genysis, where the timeline was re-written, they could have done anything – ANYTHING they wanted to do. AAANNDD John Connor’s a robot – IN THE TRAILER.
Conversely, there’s Terminator Salvation, which flat-out took place in the future, beyond the loops of time pre-destination.
It’s almost as if they hate the thought of having something surprising in their film.
It’s not that important per se – but that’s money that I would have spent on the movie instead went to Godzilla, because at least that didn’t give it’s spoilers away early – OR SO I THOUGHT. Turns out, nope, “Godzilla is in this movie at some point” IS a spoiler [seriously, don’t buy it. It is a waste of 2 hours of your life for the sake of 5 minutes, it’s rage-tear inducing].

I don’t get people thinking Disney have left it too late or whatever. A fantastic trailer, on or around the same date as tickets go on sale, and 2 months of hype leading up to the film coming out seems like plenty of time to awaken audiences to this film.

The marketing of the film has started to raise flags for me that this entire trilogy may be too invested in “mystery box” surprises and twists (e.g., w/r/t the lineage of certain characters, why Luke has gone into hiding, etc., etc.) as a basis for the story itself. II sincerely hope we aren’t walking into Star Wars: Lost.

The Dissolve had a good point about Star Trek ITD – the big “twist” is that the federation terrorist is actually Khan. Except none of the characters have any clue who Khan is or why that might be relevant. It feels more like fanboy pandering than a main culmination for the story.

A frightening example of an attempt to pay homage to old characters going completely sideways. That film’s script simply wasn’t ready to be shot when the time came. Hopefully JJ and Kasdan had sufficient time to pound out a coherent story where the characters have depth and motivations that are relatable. I am starting to wonder if the lack of reveal of the OT characters is A consequence of the old crew failing to hit the landing.

As with so much TFA speculation, we’ll have to wait and see. One aspect about the OT characters returning which gives me optimism is Kasdan’s involvement. As many know, Kasdan had some interesting ideas for the OT characters in ROTJ. Lucas rejected much of this. I get the feeling that some kernels from Kasdan’s unused ROTJ script will be used in TFA. We’ll have to wait and see!

[ attrib. ] (of a situation or condition) extremely bad, unpleasant, and degrading: “abject poverty.”

    1st teaser, Fri 11/28/14
    2nd teaser, Thu 4/16/15
    BTS SDCC reel, Fri 7/10/15
    Force Friday, Fri 9/4/15
    Jakku 360, Wed 9/23/15

I’d believe a 10/14 release with Rebels and on YouTube after the show, and tickets on sale a day or two later…

I don’t think Disney cares about the trailer in theaters on a Friday at all. The internet views will top many more millions than the few theater ones, AND early in the week is the best time to release content online as it gets passed around all week. Weekends are dead zones for social media/sharing/views. New times we are in.

Pretty staggering that Disney haven’t yet officially confirmed the trailer dropping on the 19th. Instead leaving it until the day before. Why don’t you be a logical critic and wait till you see the damn film to hate bash it and get all the attention you need since you have nothing better to do with your life than troll forums. Wonder what’ll be left for you when this new stint of star wars is up. Is this really something you’re proud of lol. Between getting no more stars wars, and more star wars i’d vote more all the way. Even if this movie is bad, it still furthers the story and interests me. You didnt create this universe. Your opinions do not matter in terms of what happens in the universe of star wars. Be happy successful people have bothered to put billions of dollars into giving people more star wars instead of being the troll that you are. Lower than bantha poodoo.

If you read my earlier posting not once did I mention I disagree with you. I am just annoyed by what you do. An abundance of information to make an educated guess? I’m a physics major. We call that a hypothesis. But guess what? Scientists don’t just come up with hypotheses and then start blabbing. They test it and see if it holds up. Why don’t you tell us how the story is going to go since you’ve made a guess at it. Share it, see what people think, and discuss it. Perhaps someone else (probably a LOT of fans) have come up with other ideas that may be more sound than yours with what we know.

And at the end of it all, say you’re right and this is going to be just crap. Just don’t watch it. Why do you have to be on every new article and tell people who are looking forward to it that it’s going to suck. I don’t have anything against expressing your opinion. But you’ve expressed the same opinion at least 100 times on various articles. We get you think this is going to be crap. Go away or sing a new tune.

When you first sat down in the theater to watch was when you got all the info., not before. As much as I like getting a taste of whats to come, and trailers have become an art form in themselves, I would be happy if Disney went old school and said, fuck it no trailer.

So far there were more trailers for the original trilogy than Force Awakens. Really this will be the first major trailer with the other two being teasers. I still highly doubt they give away much. Abrams hasn’t come this far to tease us for the past year to blow everything in one trailer. Disney has gone old school. I am sure the lack of trailers is not something they like. Almost every Disney movie or big blockbuster would’ve had 3-4 trailers by now, many tv spots, two full trailers with their final released shortly before the opening.

Boyega is British, which means usually he can act. They get classically trained. I was thinking about this the other day watching “The Final Girls” and the horrible performance by somebody Farmiga that you never have British actors with the same last names as their actor parents, it’s extremely rare. Refreshing that there is an industry somewhere where nepotism doesn’t factor in, where merit matters. BTW I liked The Final Girls, check it out.

Why do you let him bother you so much? J.J Abrams didn’t create the SW universe either. Disney bought it. And they didn’t buy it to please us fans. They bought it because they saw an opportunity to make more money.

yes, but they spent billions of dollars on SW, and they know that if they loose the faith of the fans they’ll do less money than they could, so doing a good movie that pleases the fans is for them a way to do more money. they for sure don’t want to screw things up, especially because they already have an exemple of what happens when you screw up with star wars (TPM and AOTC)

If that were true then they would’ve released all the new actions figures, everything all at once. We do not even have much SW product placement like at Burger King or Pepsi like the other films. Coffee Mate has SW designs on their product…and no kid uses that. If they really wanted to rake in the money they would have released products with the original trilogy characters as they appear in Ep 7. Imagine how much money they make when they release new products with Han, Luke and Leia…which likely wont happen until after the film’s release now. How is that making as much money as they can. Look in any store and Finn merchandise is everywhere. Nobody knows who he is. Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma aka the cool looking bad guys make up a ton of their sales much like Darth Maul did pre-Phantom Menace.

Disney DID buy it to please the fans. Disney has been involved with Lucas since the 80s beginning with Captain EO.. I don’t get the whole fear about Disney. Star Tours has been there for like 25 years (and they re-vamped it to please the fans). They also held Star Wars weekends long before they bought out Lucas and they also had various Indiana Jones attractions long before too. Seriously look at how much respect they have given to this franchise so far. They have catered completely to the fans. They are creating an entire SW related section in their theme parks that will heavily be geared to old school fans. They also do not want a bad movie either. They are fully aware of the backlash the prequels got. So is JJ who has poked fun at them, admitted they were not the best and he wouldn’t make the same mistakes. The have done an amazing job promoting this film. Usually Disney loves to over do things with promotion and especially many trailers, which tend to spoil the movie. They know how important this franchise is to fans so they want them to be happy, excited. Disney wants to win back the fans lost with those prequels. Look the respect they have shown to Jim Henson and his creations like The Muppets or how they have treated the Marvel franchise. They have shown the fans nothing but respect when they took over those franchises. People see Disney and think Mickey Mouse, pre-teen programming. Disney owned Miramax released Pulp Fiction. Don’t remember Mickey popping up in that movie.

Poor strategy? The movie will be one of the biggest ever. Guarantee the trailer will set records on YouTube for most views ever. Disney usually goes all out and releases a bunch of trailers. Look at how overdone the promotion was for the recent Avengers movie. They showed the first trailer almost 2 years before it’s release. Abrams has really been smart with this movie in how it was promoted from the lack of trailers to even the merchandise revealing pretty much nothing. We all might finally enter a movie not spoiled before seeing it.

Disney already knows that it can count on the legions of “aware” long-time fans to turn out (as well as, spread the word). In effect, we’re doing a major portion of the marketing for them- for FREE. Some folks might label this as being “happenstance” or “coincidence”, while others might call it what it actually is- Smart & Efficient (-not to mention, cost effective).

Obviously it is no coincidence that the Rebels cartoon season is starting back up at the same time as the pre-sale of tickets for VII and the rumored theatrical trailer for it. Adult fans that have kids are gonna take them to see the movie whether or not the kid is aware of it’s imminent arrival. Cha-ching. Parents and kids will go see the film multiple times (if it’s indeed that entertaining) at either the desire of the adult or the beckoning of the child. Cha-ching. I believe that there hasn’t been a hurry to market a full trailer before this time period simply because Disney figured that it wouldn’t even have to…and correctly so.

Excited isn’t really the word for this. In a way I’ll almost miss the little tidbits we’ve been getting. I mean every little second is so awesome in the trailers. When the full movie is out it’ll be over.
Then again… Rogue One and Episode 8 can keep the BB rolling. =D

So as someone completely out of the loop with regards to how blockbuster movies are released these days (the last premiere I went to was Revenge of the Sith a decade-and-a-half ago), could someone explain something? If this is going to be opening at 7 PM, does that mean there won’t be any midnight showings? Or will it be continual? I work until 9 most nights and had already planned to go to a midnight screening with friends. Will there be one?

Considering how big this movie is going to be, you can pretty much expect it to be playing continually from 7PM. I would expect some midnight showings, but if not, you can probably catch another showing any time afterwards.

Excited to see the trailer except if correct means it will hit at a ridiculous time very early Tuesday morning. Just so happens I have an 8.45am to 10.15pm shift that Tuesday, so while I will get to see the trailer I’m not going to get to enjoy the full hype machine across the Internet 🙁

Worse still if ticket sales in the UK start that Tuesday during the day I’m really gonna potentially miss out on getting my preferred ticket(s) by. Wing stuck in work and in a shop where I’m pretty sure the signal is atrocious. Arghhhhhh! :'(

I just don’t think this makes sense from an international marketing perspective. Western Europe is 6 hours ahead, so that would be the middle of the night for them, and they’re a HUGE market for this film. I’m looking for the trailer and ticket sales to happen mid-day, just like the other trailers. It might make its television premiere during MNF, but it’ll definitely hit the web globally much earlier.

You just gotta know that the trailer is gonna show some splendid kickassery. I’m counting on seeing Rey punking someone with her staff, Finn pulling some clever combat stunt and/or telling someone where they can shove their blaster and Poe making a flight maneuver that only a CW-era Anakin could even think about pulling off. Chewie’s gonna make a loud, animated growl as its only right for him to do so. I won’t speculate on much else but I would love to see a token use of the Force by Leia, maybe the old pull-the-blaster-from-the-enemy trick.

A fan can only hope, right.

I’m American (i am a few hours from Lucas Ranch and the redwoods that were Endor), And i say Star Wars Belong to everyone! lol. True, there were a few shots that were done in Death Valley and stuff, and then Endor, but the majority was London, Africa, and Norway. Hell, most of the cast and crew were British lol.

Being close to Skywalker Ranch and the redwoods doesn’t somehow make your opinion more valid dude. It was produced by an North American film studio, therefore is a North American production that used facilities, studios, and locations worldwide. Almost the entirety of the FX work/shots and post work was all done in the US also. Yes, Star Wars is a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon unlike anything that had come before. Yes, it is beloved by fans worldwide. Yes, it was filmed at Pinewood in the UK along with a multitude of other worldwide locations. It’s still the product of a US Film company, owned and produced by an US production company, which was (at the time) solely owned by a US citizen. That makes it a North American film that utilized production assets and filming locations worldwide. It isn’t that difficult to understand.

Except Arthur was fighting what would become the English and is closer to being proto-Welsh. If he existed it’s doubtful he spoke a word of Anglo-Saxon but would’ve been fluent in Brythonic / early Welsh.
