Star Wars Comics: Obi-Wan & Anakin Limited Series & More.

Obi-Wan & Anakin

Marvel has announced a new Star Wars miniseries at the New York Comic Con, one that stars Anakin and Obi-Wan, set between The Phantom Menace and Attack Of The Clones. In addition, some information about the forthcoming comics have come to light.

From USA Today:

Written by Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando) and drawn by Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire), the five-issue miniseries Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin debuts in January and is the first Marvel Comics title to explore the two characters’ relationship in the time frame between the first prequel movies.

“I want people to set their preconceived notions about what an Obi-Wan and Anakin story is aside,” Soule says. “We’ve seen a lot of them but this is something that’s going to feel and look different.”

The miniseries is set three years into Anakin’s training under Obi-Wan — something he promised the dying Qui-Gon he would do — at a peacetime period where the Jedi are at the height of their power and many feel Anakin is destined to do an enormous amount of good for the universe.

He and Obi-Wan are in a spaceship heading back to a diplomatic fleet when they get a distress call from a remote deserted planet. When they land, the Jedi find a mountainous place with deep valleys containing huge roiling clouds of green mist that cover the surface. “It’s a place that’s designed to have many, many secrets,” Soule says, “and it does.”

The story is said to extensively explore the dynamic between the two characters in a new way, with the author describing the story as one about warrior monks that is heavily inspired by Lone Wolf & Cub and the Samurai films of Akira Kurosawa. The story will feature flashbacks that are interspersed throughout the overarching narrative, revealing a personal crisis occurs between the two characters – Anakin is beginning to question the way things are with the Jedi Order and the injustices of the Galaxy, while Obi-Wan is worried about whether or not he really is suited to be Anakin’s teacher.

Darth Vader Down

In other news, Vader Down, the major crossover between the Star Wars and Darth Vader comics, will start this November and conclude in January. The event revolves around Darth Vader being cornered by the Rebel Alliance when he is stranded on a planet, leading to the Alliance to begin massive manhunt to kill or capture the strongest warrior in the Empire. The annuals for Star Wars and Darth Vader, which tell unrelated stories to the Vader Down event, will both arrive by the end of the year.

How did he get Ben? Is that what the “B” in Obi-wan refers to, or did he just choose it for no reason at all? Any explanation for this that anyone knows of? When I was a kid I thought it might be his original name, and than he was given a Jedi name, or he was a clone and that was his clone name or something (0B1). I also thought maybe clones disappear when they die… but I was wrong of course. It was an interesting idea in the mind of a kid though.

Had guess similarly when I was a kid – that during the clone wars, perhaps even Jedi clones existed – the 0-B-1 designation. 🙂

Some say it’s a nickname that Duchess Satine gave to him (of course, that was cut out in the actual TV series due to Filoni believing that might expose him to the Empire a lot sooner on Tatoonie or something like that). He does use it as a codename during a secret undercover mission after faking his own death.

What I do know is that he is known by the residents (and Luke Skywalker) as Old Ben Kenobi.

Yeah exactly. If you listen to what Luke says in Episode IV, when he hears the name Obi-Wan, he says, I have heard of an Old Ben Kenobi. He could have taken on that name to also stay in hiding. Jedi were being hunted and the Empire was actively seeking out those opposed to it. It’s very plausible he used the name to stay under the imperial radar, so to speak.

I’m very glad that Disney is still giving attention to the Expanded Universe from the timeline before the Original Trilogy.

Meh. We’ve had enough Anakin/Obi-Wan stories for two lifetimes. The I-II timeline is also extremely boring with not much going on.

I don’t know, it COULD have stuff going on. We really haven’t explored that time period yet, so who knows?

Nope, Unless they say the films aren’t canon they don’t have much to work with. Aside from that these two characters are long dead by TFA and will have very little influence over the plot. If Disney wanted to be daring and original then the’d explore the ancient Jedi/Sith where they would have more freeedom to work with and the characters they can kill off.

Umm…ANCIENT Jedi/Sith would ALSO be long dead by TFA and will have very little influence over the plot.

Wrong. Ancient Jedi/Sith are no more relevant to TFA than Anakin or Obi-Wan.
Also point of the comics is to explore different parts of Star Wars universe, different time periods and characters.

Not to be relevant to TFA. TFA is just one movie. Star Wars universe is not about TFA.

It’s actually part of a new trilogy. I reiterate Anakin/Obi-Wan have been done in all mediums so are old hat by now. They should focus on a new era that as never been touched before.

For starters we know that they can’t die and Anakin is a mere random apprentice at the start of II while Obi-wan is practically a nameless Jedi Knight. As interesting as Luke’s childhood spent jerking to random Tatooine rocks.

Obi-Wan and Anakin had alot of adventures in that time like all Jedi.

Jedi are guardians of the peace in Galaxy. They were always on different assignments.

Anakin and Obi-Wan actualy mentioned some of these events in AOTC.

The worst episodes of The Clone Wars were a billion times more interesting than anything we got in the films, comics, or books from that time. We know exactly where Anakin and Obi-Wan are at in II, One is a whiney little shit and the other is a naive dumbass. Not very compelling.

Now THIS is one comic that has me very excited! Marco Chechetto’s a phenomenal artist, and Kenobi’s probably my favourite character in the GFFA. And I’m delighted we’re getting more Prequel-era stuff, to me it was one of the most exciting periods in Star Wars history. As much I love the Rebellion Era, in recent years it’s been done to death.

Is it just me or does Vader Down sound very similar to Lords of the Sith, the Vader/Palpatine book that came out a few months ago? Also, if that cover is anything to go by (and it could well be a red herring) I’m getting nervous about too much Pre ESB Luke/Vader interaction again…

I thought the exact same thing about it sounding just like Lords of the Sith. Vader has to be a little more careful about getting stranded on a planet and getting hunted by the Rebels. Seems to happen to him every month. Maybe he is just bored and looking for a challenge.

Lol, I thought that too. Still, it’s a little different, since he doesn’t have Palpatine to bail him out when necessary. Maybe this will reveal some of the mental shifts he is going through on his way to (years later) betraying his master?

Why would the Ewok movies not be canon? They fit in with everything, they expand Endor in a great way, and they bring some great characters and creatures to the Star Wars Universe. Why are they not canon??? I would like to see the character of Cindel make a cameo in one of the new films as a journalist as she is said to have become on). I would also love to see a few Jawas in space. A Jawa would be an exellent co-pilot character There is a great animated short about Jawas flying around which was really good, but can’t recall the name. The Anakin/Obi-wan relationship has never felt the way it seemed it should based on the originals, so I personally have no interest in seeing anything with Jedi Anakin in it every again. They got it wrong.
I also think that new character (General Huxx(?) may be related to Obi-wan. That would be interesting.
